It was gathered that the suspected assassins, who were armed with AK-47 rifles, gained access into the compound located in the Kpansia area of the state capital at about 2 a.m. But Mr. Ikiogha, a close friend and ally of former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Chief of Staff to Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, was not in the house when the gunmen struck. Mr. Ikiogha parted ways with Mr. Dickson and pitched his political tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he made an unsuccessful attempt to secure the APC ticket in the Bayelsa State gubernatorial race. The hoodlums reportedly scaled the high fence of the building and found a policeman guarding the house fast asleep with his rifle. They were said to have seized the policeman's rifle and tied him up before breaking into one of the rooms in the building. Speaking in confidence, a source from the house described the incident as scary, adding that God saved the chief for not being home when the gunmen came into the apartment. He said the hoodlums operated for an hour between 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. before leaving the house. “After tying up the policeman, the gunmen cut the iron protective device in one of the windows and entered the room. They held one of the domestic servants at gunpoint and ordered him to lead them to the chief's room,” the source said. “When they got to the room, the only saw the wife. They asked the wife to produce her husband. But the woman insisted he traveled. “They told her they came for the chief but that since he was not around she should give them all the money in the house. The woman was able to give them some money. They left promising to come back for him again.” The source said before the attack, the chief complained that his life was being threatened by some unknown persons. "He was once complaining that people were after his life. He said it could be in connection with his recent statement on issues affecting the state,” the source said. When contacted, Mr. Ikiogha declined to give details of the incident, claiming that divulging such details could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

Suspected Boko Haram fighters have killed at least nine people and abducted as many as 40 others in south-east Niger , according to local officials. The gunmen late on Sunday attacked a village in Kablewa town near the southeastern Niger city of Diffa, close to the border with Nigeria , authorities said on Monday. They killed eight young people and an elderly man, Kablewa Mayor Abari Elh Daouda told the DPA news agency by telephone. In a separate interview with the AFP news agency, Daouda said between 30 to 40 people, including women and young men, were also abducted. He said Niger authorities were headed to the area to investigate. Abba Gata Issa, another mayor from the Diffa area, confirmed to Reuters that nine people had died, and around 40 women and children had been kidnapped. The attackers rode camels into the village and carried out the killings, according to Maman Nour, the director of a community radio station in Kablewa. The attack was the second such incident in the village in a week. There are more than 300,000 refugees and displaced people sheltered in the Diffa area, but authorities said they were planning to transfer thousands of refugees and displaced people to camps further from the border with Nigeria, where Boko Haram operates. Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from the Nigerian capital, Abuja, said no group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack. "For incidents like this, it takes Boko Haram days to come up with a statement," he said. "But over the last two months in particular, we've seen heightened activities on the part of the Boko Haram, who have stepped up their suicide bombings, especially on the Nigerian side. "This is an escalation at a time when security services are saying that they have gotten a grip of the situation," our correspondent said. Since 2015, the armed group's members have been staging regular attacks in the Diffa region, where Niger has declared a state of emergency. On Wednesday, two female bombers blew themselves up in a refugee camp in the town, killing two other people and wounding 11, in an attack also blamed on Boko Haram. More than 20,000 people have been killed and more than two million have fled their homes since Boko Haram launched an armed campaign in 2009 to create an Islamic state in northeast Nigeria. *Group Asks EFCC To Freeze Zamfara Governor's Bank Accounts* A pro-democracy and transparency-focused group, Concerned Nigerians, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Mr. Abdul'aziz Yari, governor of Zamfara State, and freeze all of his bank accounts. Concerned Nigerians noted that Mr. Yari was alleged, in May, to have diverted $3 million from the Paris Club Refund to build a 100-room Hotel in Lekki, Lagos and another N500million from the special account of the Nigeria Governors' Forum and deposited the said sum into a mortgage bank account to pay off a loan. The group referred to an exclusive report by SaharaReporters stating that Mr. Yari, who is the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum used the money to pay back a loan he obtained from a mortgage institution to purchase two properties in 2013. "It is pertinent to note that the Zamfara State Governor is the Chairman of Nigeria Governors' Forum and he is a high ranking member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and very close to President Muhammadu Buhari. The EFCC must not just investigate Mr Yari, but freeze all accounts associated with him where government funds must have been diverted just like they did in the case of Mr.Fayose," the group demanded. |
*Lagos State Launches Environmental Sanitation Corps* According to the government, the Kick Against Indiscipline Brigade has been transformed into the newly employed LAGESC corps members, which will ensure that environmental laws in the state are strictly adhered to. While recalling the signing of the Environmental Management Protection Law which he performed in March 2017, Ambode said deliberate reforms to revolutionise the solid waste management sector in line with international best practice have been put in place through the CLI, and urged the people to support the government in its bid to transform the sector. He said, "To roll back sanitation shortcomings and accelerate seamless cleaning of our environment, the Lagos mega city was in dire need of an enduring solution that would match the needed technology with the massive investment required for its attainment. "It is this void that the CLI has come to fill by creating an environment for the private sector to harness international best practice in the vital area of solid waste management and consequently free public funds for other beneficial uses. "As a result, residential waste collection and processing which is concessioned to a reputable and competent multinational waste services company is being given a new lease of life with 600 brand new compactors and 900,000 electronically tracked bins, while wastes generated by the commercial sector would be handled by licensed waste management operators (PSP)." |

Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal says
Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez will not
commit their futures to Arsenal until
Arsene Wenger signs a new contract at
the club.
Sanchez and Ozil are Arsenal's two
highest earners and most important
players but their contracts expire in the
summer of 2018 which means they could
move to other clubs for minimal fees.
Monreal, a left-back at the club, says the
current uncertainty around the trio "does
not help" and results continue to suffer.
Wenger's contract expires this summer
but the Frenchman already has a two-
year-extension availiable to him.
"But today these are the circumstances:
the coach finishes his contract and has not
yet communicated whether he continues
or not, then there are two important
players like Alexis and Mesut who finish
their contracts next season and they are
waiting for the coach to follow.
"It is a situation of uncertainty, and that
does not help. But it is not in our hands
either."
Wenger and Sanchez were recently
involved in a training ground bust-up
which led to the attacker benched for the
3 - 1 loss at Liverpool.
The Chilean how however been ever-
present for the Gunners since the defeat.
The #WengerOut Brigade is gaining
momentum at this moment and if signs a
new deal at the club, it would increase
the discontent among the fan base. |
