Politics / Tribunal Rules Against Delta Speaker by chisomdoris: 10:43am On Jun 29, 2019
The Panel 2 Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Asaba has granted a motion by Mr. Harrison Akpojaro candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) Okpe constituency in the 2019 General Election, Delta State House of Assembly.

The petitioner contested against Mr. Sherriff Oborevwori, (PDP), (1st Respondent) current member and speaker in the Delta State House of Assembly.

Charles Umweni, lead counsel to the petitioner had moved a motion urging the tribunal to allow the petitioner effect minor amendment to his petition.

He urged the Tribunal to grant his motion to make a minor amendment to his petition which he claimed was a clerical error.

He maintained that by provisions of 14(2)(a) and (b) of the 1st schedule of the Electoral  Act 2010 as amended, the provisions of the Electoral Act do not forbid amendment in so far such amendment are not substantial.

He urged the tribunal to grant his motion to delete the word Warri North, and replace it with Okpe saying it is a clerical error that the Act does not forbid.

The petitioner through his council submitted that minor amendments cannot in anyway charge the substance of the petition and urged the tribunal to grant the motion for minor amendment.

Counsel to the speaker, Hon. Sherriff Oborevwori, (PDP), (1st Respondent), Ekeme Owhovioriole (SAN), urged the tribunal to refuse the motion for minor amendment to the petition as prayed by the petitioner, saying if such is granted it will amount to entire petition being amended.

The tribunal chair, Hon. Justice C.O. Onyeabo agreed with the submissions of counsels to the petitioner, granted the motion for minor amendment to the petition.

Politics / Nigerians Must Hold Public Officers Accountable – Osun Lawmaker by chisomdoris: 10:37am On Jun 29, 2019
The Chief Whip of the Osun State House of Assembly, Tunde Olatunji, has charged Nigerians to hold public office holders accountable in order to break the nation’s yoke of under development.

Speaking at a News Point programme of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Osun State Council, Olatunji, representing Ife North state constituency, insisted that accountability in government is not negotiable.

According to him: “It is high time we held our government accountable for Nigeria to grow.”

The lawmaker called on Nigerians to see the fight against insurgents as collective, stressing that, “every Nigerian must join hands with the government to build this nation.”

The lawmaker, who acknowledged efforts of the state governor, Gboyega Oyetola, to end the menace of kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities, said far-reaching solutions must be sought to overcome the challenges facing Nigeria.

He said: “Special attention must be to paid family units, where children are trained about values and social norms. Family restructuring is a strong factor to consider and that can be a panacea to ending insecurity and economic predicament.

”A large percentage of youths involved in crimes are from broken homes and their bad attitude and characters are substantially linked to poor parenting. The real restructuring towards socio-economic challenges of Nigeria must start from the families.

”I make bold to say that over 80 per cent of young people in crime are either from broken homes or fragmented families. That is a serious factor that has continued to aggravate our national security challenges.”

Olatunji, an ex-banker, advised the Federal Government to control population explosion, which he said was not commensurate with growth in productivity.

According to him, the recent figure that puts Nigeria’s population at over 200 million should be a thing of great concern to all Nigerians, in the absence of advancement in the country’s level of productivity.

Foreign Affairs / Trump, Putin To Meet At G20 Summit by chisomdoris: 11:20am On Jun 28, 2019
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Friday for the first time since special counsel Robert Mueller released his report detailing Russia’s “sweeping and systematic” campaign to disrupt the 2016 election in Trump’s favor.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to talk for about an hour to discuss a series of national security issues, including Iran’s recent aggression, the civil war in Syria, where the United States and Russia are backing opposing sides, and a new arms control treaty with China.

But it’s unclear whether Trump will press Putin on Mueller’s findings. Before he left Washington, Trump declined to tell reporters at the White House what, if anything, he would say to Putin about election interference. Putin denies any Russian role in the election, and Trump has previously sparked controversy by appearing to accept the Russian president’s word on the issue.

“I’ll have a very good conversation with him,” he said. “What I say to him is none of your business.”

A senior administration official described the meeting as a “normal event” focused on improving the bilateral relationship.

“With regard to the message for Putin, I think the president’s message on election interference is well known and he will be repeating it,” the official said.

Trump’s approach to Putin on the subject has been under heavy scrutiny since a 2018 meeting between the two in Helsinki. At a news conference, Trump seemingly sided with Putin’s denials over the conclusions of U.S. intelligence agencies, which have blamed the Kremlin for orchestrating the systematic election meddling campaign. And just two weeks ago, Trump said in an interview that he might not report to the FBI any election help offered by a foreign source in the 2020 election cycle. He later tried to walk the statement back.

While in Japan, Trump is holding a series of bilateral meetings at the annual meeting of the world’s largest economies with autocratic leaders the president often praises for their strength and ability to act unilaterally. In addition to Putin, Trump will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Democrats and Republicans have blasted Trump for what appears to be a reluctance to criticize Putin, even as his administration has repeatedly hit Russia with sanctions over issues like election interference and criticized Moscow for its aggression in Ukraine.

But Trump himself has called Putin to congratulate him on an election that was marred with allegations of fraud, invited the Russian leader to the White House and suggested the Crimea region in Ukraine that Russia annexed in 2014 should remain part of Russia.

Politics / Johnson, Presidential Aide Lauds NAFDAC For Suspending Msmes Tariff Hike by chisomdoris: 11:07am On Jun 28, 2019
Mr Tola Johnson, a Presidential Aide, has commended the National Agency for Food and Drug Control (NAFDAC) for suspending its recent hike of tariffs of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

He gave the commendation on Thursday in Abuja at the 2019 “World MSMEs Day’’ celebration organised by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

Johnson, a Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on MSMEs, recalled that the recent increase of MSMEs tariff to 60 per cent by NAFDAC made pressure groups and MSMEs across the country to agitate and expressed dissatisfaction because it was not favourable.

“I commend NAFDAC for giving listening ears to the MSMEs; an increase from N10, 000 to N84, 000 in MSMEs tariff would have caused a lot of burden to the MSMEs in the country.’’

He expressed satisfaction with the suspension and advised the agency to always engage all stakeholders and spell out its reasons before increasing any tariff.

Johnson also commended the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) for extending its bonanza period for registration of small businesses to August 2019.

He advised the MSMEs to seize the opportunity to register their businesses with appropriate and meaningful names to boost their businesses and financial transactions.

According to him, the MSMEs have major challenges which differ in various places, ranging from finance issues, power generation and training, among others.

He identified the broadest challenge facing the MSMEs as access to finance and reiterated commitment of the Federal Government to continue to introduce laudable schemes which MSMEs could access easily with low interest rates.

In a keynote address, Mrs Ekaette Umoh, a Former Chairperson of Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) Network of Entrepreneurial Women (NNEW), Abuja Chapter, said that there were 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be attained by 2030.

Umoh said that Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) of the SDGs related to SMEDAN.

“Goals number eight and nine are our concern as entrepreneurs and development partners. SMEDAN has played a commendable role in the attainment of those goals.

“MSMEs are the key to creating the 600 million jobs needed by 2030 to keep pace with the growth of the world’s working age population’’.

She urged SMEDAN to use the opportunity of the 2019 World MSMEs Day to mobilise the political will and resources to address global problems, celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

Politics / AFCFTA: What President Buhari Said As He Formerly Accepts Committee Report by chisomdoris: 8:29pm On Jun 27, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has formerly accepted the report of the committee to assess impact and readiness for the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, AFCFTA.

Buhari said that for AfCFTA to succeed, Afican nations must develop policies that promote African production, among other benefits.

He formerly accepted the report from the committee at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

According to him, “It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to this occasion to receive the report on the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Nigeria’s readiness for it.

“It has been over a year now since the African Union Heads of States adopted the Phase I Agreement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) at its 10th Extraordinary Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, on 21st of March 2018.

“Since then, a lot has been said about Nigeria’s decision to conduct a detailed study on how this agreement will impact us as a country.

“Let me state unequivocally that trade is important for us as a nation and to all nations. Economic progress is what makes the world go around.

“Our position is very simple, we support free trade as long as it is fair and conducted on an equitable basis.

“The AfCFTA will have both positive and negative effects on us as a nation and on our region.

“As Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, we cannot afford to rush into such agreements without full and proper consultation with all stakeholders.

“As you mentioned in your report, intra-African trade is only 14% of Africa’s total trade. Our consumption is mostly of goods imported from outside the continent.

“For AfCFTA to succeed, we must develop policies that promote African production, among other benefits.

“Africa, therefore, needs not only a trade policy but also a continental manufacturing agenda. Our vision for intra-African trade is for the free movement of ‘made in Africa goods.’ That is, goods and services made locally with dominant African content in terms of raw materials and value addition.

“If we allow unbridled imports to continue, it will dominate our trade. The implication of this, is that coastal importing nations will prosper while landlocked nations will continue to suffer and depend on aid.

“As I stated during the inauguration of this Committee, many of the challenges we face today, whether security, economic or corruption are rooted in our inability, over the years, to domesticate the production of the most basic requirements and create jobs for our very vibrant, young and dynamic population.

“Henceforth, we shall ensure that our negotiated agreements create business opportunities for Africa’s manufacturers, service providers and innovators.

“The AfCFTA we aspire to have should therefore not only create wealth for investors but also jobs and prosperity for our vibrant and hardworking citizens. The benefits of economic growth must be prosperity for the masses.

“I am very delighted to receive your report today and with the time spent, skills applied and energy invested, I am confident that the Committee has been thorough and diligent.

Sports / AFCON 2019: Algeria Beats Senegal To Qualify For Round Of Sixteen by chisomdoris: 8:05pm On Jun 27, 2019
Youcef Belaili scored the solitary goal against Senegal that has sealed Algeria’s place in the Round of sixteen of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

The Desert Foxes become the third African team to make it to the knockout rounds. They join Nigeria and Egypt, after securing their first back-to-back AFCON victory since 1990.

Mane was unfortunate not to win a penalty when he was sandwiched by Adlene Guedioura and Ramy Bensebaini with 20 minutes to go. This raised questions about the use of the video assistant referee (VAR) that will not be in use until the quarter-final stage.

The game did not live up to the hype, with Senegal not having a shot on target until the 78th minute when Youssouf Sabaly’s 20-yard shot was parried by Rais M’Bolhi and Mbaye Diagne put the rebound wide from close range.

Stoke City midfielder Badou Ndiaye blazed a shot over for Senegal just after the hour-mark and Mahrez, in a rare moment of magic, lashed an effort just wide from long range.

Politics / Rising Rate Of Fake News In Enugu Worries Gov. Ugwuanyi by chisomdoris: 7:52am On Jun 27, 2019
Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has expressed dismay at the increasing rate of negative and fake news being peddled against the state government especially in the social media.

Ugwuanyi made this known in Enugu on Wednesday when he received the management of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) led by its Acting Managing Director, Mr Idris Abdulrahman at the Government House.

The governor cited recent misinformation peddled in the social media about a military helicopter that dropped weapon for herdsmen to attack the state and the entire South East zone.

Ugwuanyi said that such fake news was capable of causing havoc not only in the state but the zone at large.

According to him, the south east is a very important geopolitical zone in the country and Enugu State is one of the fastest growing economies in the country.

The governor urged NAN to use its platform to fight against fake news that caused damage to the country’s image.

“We need a platform like NAN that has a very wide reach to diffuse fake news in the country,’’ he said.

While congratulating NAN on its 40 years anniversary, the governor pledged to partner with the agency in its activities especially the multimedia and other products.

Ugwuanyi also urged the agency to embark in development journalism by reaching out to rural dwellers and give them voice and sense of belonging.

Earlier, the Ag Managing Director of NAN, Mr Abdulrahman congratulated the governor on his re-election for a second term and expressed its willingness to support his administration.

Education / Jamb 2019: JAMB Withdraws UTME Results Of Four Candidates by chisomdoris: 8:17pm On Jun 26, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has withdrawn the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results of four candidates.

The candidates include: Adah Eche with Registration Number 97512230IB, Taiwo Abisola Omowumi with Registration Number 97049254GG, Vincent Onyinyechi Prisca with Registration Number 96531098BC and Sofodun Afolasade Zainab with Registration Number 96634599GA.

JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the four candidates were found by the board to have been involved in an attempt to fake JAMB result.

“The Board therefore withdraws and invalidates the results of the four candidates found to have been involved in the illicit attempt to fake JAMB result.

“No effort would be spared in identifying and sanctioning any candidate who attempts to falsify results of JAMB-organised examinations (UTME and others) and whoever collaborates or patronizes such candidates would also face similar consequence,” the statement said.

Eche was apprehended on Monday by the board for being in possession of a fake UTME result.

He had attempted to upgrade his original UTME score of 153 to 290 with the help of a professional examination fraudster.

According to JAMB, apart from being in possession of a fake UTME result, he was also working with the above name candidates to have their scores inflated as well.

Meanwhile, the board said it has released the results of 3, 736 who have been cleared of any infraction.

According to Benjamin, the candidates whose results have been released are those who were invited and appeared at eight centres listed by the board.

He said that after an interaction with the board’s Intelligence Committee to ascertain their culpability or otherwise in some discovered examination infraction, their results were released.

Politics / List Of Senate Principal Officers Tear PDP Apart by chisomdoris: 5:23pm On Jun 26, 2019
The plot by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), to tinker with the list of selected principal officers of the party in the Senate is brewing bad blood.

There were unconfirmed reports on Tuesday that the NWC of the PDP had concluded arrangements to alter the list of selected minority leadership in the upper chamber.

It was reliably learnt that the party planned to drop the Senator representing Edo Central, Clifford Ordia, from the list slated to be announced on Tuesday next week.

The PDP NWC named Ordia as its Deputy Minority Whip in the Senate at a meeting held in the house of the party’s national chairman, Uche Secondus last week.

If the plot succeeds, Ordia is likely to be replaced by Senator Sahabi Yau from Zamfara State.

At the same meeting, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, (Abia South), was named the party’s Senate minority leader.

Senators Emmanuel Bwacha, (Taraba South), was selected as deputy minority leader while Senator Philip Aduda, (Federal Capital Territory) was chosen as the minority whip.

Some PDP senators from the South-South have vowed to resist any move to drop Ordia.

The Senators are insisting that the party must not impose any principal officer on them without due consultation.

One of the aggrieved senators who spoke to reporters in Abuja, said an election was conducted at a meeting held at the Abuja residence of the national chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus on the 14th of June.

He noted that nominations were made in the presence of party leaders and PDP senators and winners emerged.

He said that those who emerged were unanimously backed by the various organs of the party.

He added that the plan to alter the list and drop some names, does not have the backing of the caucus of the party.

He insisted that no one has been consulted or any meeting held with PDP senators to agree on the need to alter the list.

The Senator who does not want to be named accused some governors of mounting pressure on the leadership of the PDP to ensure that their interest is represented in the Senate.

He said, “Under the rules of the Senate, it is not the responsibility of the National Working Committee to select principal officials.

Foreign Affairs / Zimbabwe Bans Use Of U.S. Dollars, Others by chisomdoris: 10:26am On Jun 25, 2019
In a bid to defend its fledgeling new currency against black market speculation, Zimbabwe‘s Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has outlawed the use of the US dollar and a host of other foreign currencies in local transactions.

In 2009, Zimbabwe allowed the US dollar and other foreign currencies to be used as legal tender in the country after hyperinflation decimated the value of the Zimbabwean dollar.

Earlier this year, to pave the way towards ending so-called “dollarisation”, the country laid the foundations for a new Zimbabwean dollar by introducing an interim currency, the Real Time Gross Settlement dollar (RTGS) or “zollar”.

But since its launch in February, the RTGS has struggled amid black market speculation that has seen its value slide sharply against the US dollar.

Monday’s government decree values the RTGS at par with the Zimbabwe dollar and mandates it be used as the country’s sole legal tender for local transactions with immediate effect.

“The British pound, United States dollar, South African rand, Botswana pula and any other foreign currency whatsoever shall no longer be legal tender alongside the Zimbabwe dollar in any transactions in Zimbabwe,” read the decree.

But some believe the measure will not arrest the decline of the RTGS.

“I think its ridiculous measure,” said Eddie Cross, an economist and founding member of the Movement for Democratic Change, the main opposition party in Zimbabwe.

“The exchange rate will run and this is completely out of sync. For heaven’s sake, this is economic sabotage. I hope people will not go on the street tomorrow. This is just catastrophic,” Cross told Al Jazeera.

Independent economist Victor Bhoroma said businesses with debts denominated in foreign currencies could see the cost of servicing those obligations soar.

“It means that all debts contracted in USD are now payable in the local currency,” Bhoromoa told Al Jazeera.” All products and services that were being indexed in USD (ie, insurance and property) since it was legal tender will now be indexed in local Zimbabwean dollar.”

Politics / Kogi Guber: Why We Can’t Endorse Gov. Yahaya Bello For Second Term – APC by chisomdoris: 9:37am On Jun 25, 2019
Ahead of the November governorship election, the All Progressives Congress, APC, State Executive Committee, says the state Governor, Yahaya Bello has not been endorsed for the a second term.
APC Secretary in the state, Salam Tom Adejoh, explained that Bello’s poor performance should not be rewarded with a second term.
Addressing journalists in Abuja yesterday, Adejoh said the party’s executive committee members were not in any position to endorse any aspirant.
According to Adejoh, the party’s governorship ticket was open to every qualified party member.
He disclosed that during the state executive committee, the endorsement of Bello was not discussed.
Adejoh said: “We did not endorse anyone and we are not planning to. The party’s ticket is open to everyone in the party.
“Our discussion ended at the need for peace so that the party can move forward. He (governor) said he needed a sincere peace and we agreed on terms. There was nothing like endorsement.
“The terms we agreed on were that our allowances and other packages that we are entitled to would be given to us and we all agreed on these terms.
“The governor requested for the case in court to be withdrawn. We told him there are some processes to be followed.”

Politics / Kogi Governorship: PDP Aspirants Express Frustration At N24m Nomination Fee by chisomdoris: 8:28am On Jun 25, 2019
Some gubernatorial aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State have expressed frustration over the nomination fee for the state’s gubernatorial election slated for November 16.
Some of the aspirants, who spoke with Us in Abuja at the Forum of Aspirants meeting with the State Working Committee, described the fee as outrageous.

Mr. Sam Uhuotu, Kogi State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, at the meeting told the aspirants that the fee was the decision of NEC of the party at the national leadership and not that of the state.

“The aspirants were informed that they would pay up N24m basically for the form and expression of interest form.”

The session turned rowdy as many of the aspirants could no longer hold back their frustration saying the recently-concluded general election was not different from the state election billed for November 16th, 2019.
However, normalcy was returned as the party leadership led by Sam Uhuotu took time to explain that it was not the decision of the State Working committee but that of the National Working committee adding that “there is nothing that can be done.”

One of the aspirants, Dr. Idris Omede, who spoke with DAILY POST after the meeting confirmed: “The form stands at N20m and the expression of interest N1m while the commitment to the party is N3m.

“Basically, the amount for each aspirant that is interested in this contest is N24m.”

He said one of the major points is the fact that the party promised to create a level playing ground for all the aspirants as it equally appealed to the aspirants to work together to bring victory to the PDP.

“On fact that some of the aspirants kicked against the exorbitant amount he said was at the point of discussion but when explanation was given everyone agreed, because it was a NEC decision not that of the State Working Committee.”

He said, “Initially it was rumoured to be N51m but that has been shelved.
“Basically, the point is, yes people argued that this election should be seen as the general election, which just held recently and that there is no reason for the difference in the amount for the form having been an issue that passed through the NEC it cannot be reversed now.

Litutenant-General Tukur Buratai, Chief of Army Staff, COAS, has charged commanders of the various units and formations of the Nigerian Army, NA, to flush out lazy officers and soldiers.
He said that the army would no longer tolerate a situation where the attitude of those he described as “quite a few bad eggs” with waning commitment to national and military cause that has resulted in setbacks to the army operations.

“Transformational leaders should not wait for them to get out of the way, you must kick them out of your way.
“In my opening remarks, I observed the attitude of quite a few bad eggs among us, whose commitment to our national/military cause has waned and led to setbacks in our operations.
“I am glad that this workshop has clearly shown to everyone that we have great reason to be proud of our nation.
“The long standing culture of service, sacrifice and honour in the NA has been reaffirmed in the various life lessons and examples of our colleagues – serving, retired or late – whose stories were highlighted during the workshop. This culture should reinvigorate and motivate you as transformational leaders for selfless service to the nation.
“The NA is already working to evolve and institutionalize formal mentoring frameworks to compliment the informal system that we currently practice. I have ensured that we take advantage of technology as force multiplier in our operations.
“Yet I am glad that your discussions on emerging technologies and innovations made it clear that our human capacity and willingness to work is vital for success.
“Lastly, the presentation on insights into the NA Strategic Plan 2019-2029 has given us hope that surely tomorrow will be better for the NA.”

Politics / Buhari Vs Atiku: Omokri Reacts As Tribunal Rejects Ex-vp, Pdp’s Application by chisomdoris: 2:19pm On Jun 24, 2019
Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, spoke on the Nigerian justice system, wondering if getting justice was still possible in the country.

Omokri was reacting to the rejection of the application by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its 2019 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar to inspect the server used by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in the last election.

The Presidential election petition tribunal had on Monday dismissed the application which was filed by Atiku and the PDP.

Justice Mohammed Garba, Chairman of the panel, had ruled that granting such application at this interlocutory stage would preempt the substantive petition.

Reacting in a tweet, Omokri wrote: “BREAKING NEWS: The Election Petition Tribunal dismisses

@Atiku’s plea to inspect @INECNigeria’s server and then approves @MBuhari’s plea to amend his response to HE Atiku. With all the evidence provided? Can there still be justice in Nigeria?
