Politics / Aminu Iya Abbas Elected Speaker, Adamawa Assembly by chisomdoris: 1:22pm On Jun 13, 2019
The member representing Uba/Gaya state constituency in Adamawa State, Aminu Iya Abbas, has been elected speaker of the State House of Assembly.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lawmaker was elected Thursday during the inauguration of the 7th Assembly at the Assembly complex in the state capital, Yola.

The emergence of Abbas is considered by his party to be a major turn of event given earlier anxiety within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which had been high up till Wednesday evening as four candidates had been contending for the position, with the possibility of splitting PDP votes.

The PDP has a slight majority in the 7th Assembly with 13 members as against the 11 by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) which was able to narrow its contenders for the office of speaker to just one.

But onn Thursday, Abbas of the PDP finally emerged Speaker unopposed first following the intervention of the party which made his fellow PDP contenders to step down and support him, and then the decision by the immediate past Speaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa of the APC, to quit the race for the position.

Politics / Atiku, PDP Seek Tribunal’s Permission To Inspect Inec’s Server by chisomdoris: 7:17am On Jun 12, 2019
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) yesterday fixed tomorrow for hearing of an application by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar for permission to inspect the server with which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) allegedly transmit the election results electronically.

In their petition before the tribunal, the PDP and Atiku are claiming that they won the February 23 presidential election as per the results fed into INEC’s server, a claim the electoral umpire has consistently faulted.

Tribunal’s Chairman, Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, said the PEPT will also, tomorrow, hear the petitioners’ other application for extension of time to regularise one of their processes.

At yesterdays sitting, the tribunal heard about 11 applications filed by the respondents; four by the 1st respondent (INEC), three by the second respondent (President Muhammadu Buhari) and three by the third respondent – the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The first INEC’s application moved by its lawyer, Yunus Usman (SAN), was that seeking the dismissal of the petition for being defective, the petitioners have failed to include the Vice President, Yemi Osinbjo as a party.

Usman argued that since the ticket is a joint one, with Osinbajo not immune to whatever the outcome of the petitions would be, it was wrong for the petitioners not to have included him as a party.

The second application prayed the court to strike out some portions of the petition for being defective.

Politics / Senate Presidency: Five Reasons Why Lawan Defeated Ndume by chisomdoris: 4:06pm On Jun 11, 2019
Senator Ahmed Lawan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday emerged President of the 9th Senate.

Lawan defeated Senator Ali Ndume with total votes of 79 to 28. Here is a look at five reasons why Lawan defeated Ndume:

· APC’s endorsement

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC met with governors and members of the National Assembly elected on the platform of the party on Monday in Abuja to endorse candidates for positions of the Senate President, Speaker and their deputies.
The forum endorsed Senator Ahmed Lawan as Senate President. It is safe to say that the endorsement of Lawan could have influenced his victory.

Unlike 2015, the endorsement worked because the party didn’t stop at that. It mobilised all forces to make sure the endorsement worked.

· Buhari’s intervention

On Thursday 6th June, President Muhammadu Buhari met with Senators Danjuma Goje and Ahmed Lawan. After the closed-door meeting with the President, Goje withdrew from the race making, the road clearer for Lawan’s victory.

As against 2015, the President took the bull by the horn, ensuring he neutralised almost all the oppositions, cementing his status as a father figure in the party.

· Wide consultation

The same Lawan was endorsed in 2015 by APC but didn’t do much. He, more or less, trusted the party to ensure his victory. But this time around, he didn’t bank on the endorsement alone. He went round the nation, speaking to stakeholders and lobbying senators to support him.

He was able to rally round key forces to make his ambition a reality.

· Disaffections with Ndume

Most People’s Democratic Party (PDP) senators, somehow couldn’t trust Ndume with their votes. The 28 votes he garnered clearly indicate all PDP members didn’t vote for him despite his endorsement by the NWC of the party.

Ndume, to many of them, is never a good alternative to Lawan. He was in the PDP some years ago and they believe he may just be a sell-out.

Fans have mocked Cristiano Ronaldo after they claimed he looked unhappy when his Portugal team-mate Bernardo Silva was named the Nations League Player of the Tournament.
The award was presented after Fernando Santos' side defeated Holland in the Nations League final on Sunday.

Silva's team-mates congratulated the Manchester City star but Ronaldo looked quite distant towards Silva.

People on social media thought Ronaldo looked a bit sad when it was announced that it was not the Juventus star.
One person said: 'Look how happy 'the leader' was when Bernardo got announced as the Player of the Tournament.'

Another added with two laughing emojis: 'Tears in his eyes.'
Someone else said: 'He doesn't even hide it anymore lol.'
Another person said: 'Me me me all about me.'

Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Swizterland in the previous round to reach the final.

But it was Goncalo Guedes who scored the decisive winner against Ronald Koeman's men to lift the trophy.

City star Silva, set up two of Ronaldo's goals in the semi-final and also assisted Guedes for his strike in the final.

Politics / How I’ll avoid being ‘stoned’ by Kwara people – Gov. Abdulrazaq by chisomdoris: 11:17am On Jun 10, 2019
The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has assured people of the state that he would deliver on his campaign promises to avoid being “stoned”.

He gave the assurance during a meeting with top officials of the Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency in Ilorin, the state capital, over the weekend.

AbdulRazaq said he was aware of the high expectations of the people and has resolved to meet their yearning, especially in road construction and provision of other social infrastructure.

He said: “The state of our roads in Kwara is disappointing. This is particularly true of Kwara North.
“There is no road, for instance, to Gwanara especially now that it is raining and yet the contractor handling it is collecting money. That was why the previous administration was stoned (in Gwanara).

“We don’t want to be stoned.

“Kwara people have woken up and if I don’t fix the road, they will protest. So, we will sit with the contractors. We are not sacking or removing them. We want to be proactive so they can do their job.”

Politics / What Dino Melaye must do to defeat me in election –Bello Boasts by chisomdoris: 10:33am On Jun 10, 2019
The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello has addressed threat surrounding his return as Governor of Kogi State following Dino Melaye’s emergence in the 2019 governorship race.
Bello, who spoke with newsmen at the Kebbi Governor’s lodge in the Asokoro area of Abuja, shortly after the Progressive Governors’ Forum on Sunday night, dismissed the threat by Senator Dino Melaye to unseat him as a none issue.
He expressed confidence of emerging as winner of the forthcoming governorship election in the state on Sunday, stating that to prevail over him at the governorship election, Dino Melaye must be prepared to pass through the eye of the needle.

The Governor said: “In Kogi state, we know the election is coming up and of course, a lot of people will come out for the challenge. But the reality is that we are on ground. From within the party to the General election, we are not just talking of victory, we ‘re talking of the margin of the victory of APC over any other party that will come next because of what we have been able to do in the stage delivering on all our promises.
“You are going to see election like never before. Kogi election is going to be as smooth as anything and we are very confident of victory.”
On Senator Melaye posing threat to his re-election, Bello said, “anytime you talk, we should talk of somebody that is good. Apart from that person you are talking of, let him justify the mandate given to him by showing his people what he has done. For him to come and challenge me means that he is ready to pass through the eye of the needle.”

Politics / Imo: Okorocha Mocks Ihedioha, Says Governor Behaving Like Reps Member by chisomdoris: 10:05am On Jun 10, 2019
Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo State, has challenged his successor, Emeka Ihedioha, to stop behaving like a lawmaker.
He said rather than settle down to his responsibility of governance, Ihedioha had been setting up committees as if he was still a member of the House of Representatives on oversight functions.
The governor stated this in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, yesterday.

The statement read, “The new governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, has not started to govern the state; looking at his activities and utterances so far.
“He has been embarking on oversight functions as if he is still at the National Assembly where he was, uninterruptedly, for 12 years.
“He has also been busy setting up series of committees with at least three committees a day, and has never done any serious thing or taken any serious step or said any serious thing to show that he has actually taken the seat as the governor of the state. He also seems not to have cared about asking questions.
“In the course of doing oversight functions even as governor, he would go to one bad dredging site which he won’t mention where it is, he would send out the photograph just to blackmail his predecessor or he would send out the photograph of one bad toilet they got from somewhere and said it was in the Government House. So petty and unserious all these days.

Politics / 9th Assembly: Ndume Predicts Danger, Apologizes To Dino Melaye by chisomdoris: 6:05pm On Jun 06, 2019
An aspirant for the President of the Senate, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has warned that the independence of the Ninth National Assembly may be under threat.

He called on lawmakers to work to protect its independence to avoid turbulent sessions.

Ndume also singled out Senator Dino Melaye and apologised to him “if I offended you during my stay in the Eight Senate.”

Ndume, representing Borno South in the upper legislative chamber, noted that the only thing every parliament has going for it is its independence which it must guard zealously.

The lawmaker said this while contributing to the valedictory session to mark the end of legislative business for the Eight Senate on Thursday.

The Borno born politician said that the difference between democracy and military government is the independence of parliament.

Ndume said, “We had loads of disagreements. I respect your resilience and your ability to stand for what you believe in. We started together and we were doing fine. What happened was part of the learning process.

“My concern is the independence of this arm of government. That is not to say we must not work with the other side (Presidency).

“I see a dangerous thing coming. The only thing that makes democracy different from military rule is the Parliament. We need to ensure the independence of the Parliament.

“If we take away the Parliament, what we have is not democracy. I am one of those that were controversial in the last four years. Within the process, we may have offended one another. I take nothing personal.

“This institution is very important. Let us protect the sanctity of the parliament. This is the Nigerian Senate. There is no APC or PDP Senate. This is the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We will continue to support the other side but we must work at all times to protect the sanctity of the institution of the parliament. We must continue to enhance the sanctity of the Senate at all times.”
