Sports / Gernot Rohr Invites New Defender For Brazil Friendly by chisomdoris: 11:36am On Oct 05, 2019
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has made a slight adjustment to his team for the October 13 friendly against the national team of Brazil.

The Franco-German tactician has extended an invitation to Tryonee Ebuehi who has been asked to replace Kenneth Omeruo who is understood to be injured.

Before now, Rohr had picked in-form Granada of Spain midfielder Ramon Azeez and Czech –based forward Peter Olayinka in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the prestige friendly with five-time world champions Brazil in Singapore on Sunday, 13th October.

Azeez scored against Barcelona last weekend as Granada beat the Spanish champions 2-0 in La Liga while Olayinka became the first Nigerian to score on his Champions League debut in 15 years when he scored for Slavia Prague in a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan last week.

The Returnees

With Omeruo now out, the defenders that would be doing the hard work against the skillful Brazilians would be Abdullahi Shehu and Chidozie Awaziem back from injury, otherwise, the squad is largely unchanged from the side that was forced to a 2-2 draw by Ukraine in Dnipro on 10th September.

Goalkeepers Francis Uzoho, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and Maduka Okoye are also retained, England –based midfielder Wilfred Ndidi also returns after missing the Ukraine encounter with an injury.

Alex Iwobi, Oghenekaro Etebo, and Scotland –based Joseph Ayodele-Aribo, who scored on his debut against Ukraine, are all back in midfield, with Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu, Paul Onuachu and Emmanuel Dennis all back in the frontline.

23 EAGLES TO BATTLE BRAZIL

Goalkeepers: Francis Uzoho (Omonia FC, Cyprus); Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Heartland FC); Emil Maduka Okoye (Fortuna Dusseldorf, Germany)

Defenders: Olaoluwa Aina (Torino FC, Italy); Abdullahi Shehu (Bursaspor FC, Turkey); Chidozie Awaziem (CD Leganes, Spain); William Ekong (Udinese FC, Italy); Tyronne Ebuehi; Jamilu Collins (SC Padeborn 07, Germany); Oluwasemilogo Ajayi (West Bromwich Albion, England)

Midfielders: Alexander Iwobi (Everton FC, England); Anderson Esiti (PAOK Salonica, Greece); Oghenekaro Etebo (Stoke City FC, England); Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City, England); Joseph Ayodele-Aribo (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland); Ramon Azeez (Granada FC, Spain)

Politics / El-Rufai: My Child Will Remain In Public School Despite Kidnapping Threat by chisomdoris: 10:39am On Oct 05, 2019
Gov. Nasiru el-Rufa’i of Kaduna State says his child will remain in public school in spite the reported invasion of the state by kidnappers and Boko Haram elements.

El-Rufa’i stated this while reacting to the abduction of six students and two teachers at the Engrave’s College in Kakau Daji area of Kaduna State on Wednesday.

The governor, who spoke to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday, said his child should not be safer or more protected than any other child in the state.

“My child should not be safer or more protected than any other child in Kaduna State. I took an oath of office to protect everyone and my child is just only one of the two million children we have in Kaduna state primary schools and I have no intention of reviewing that.

“For me taking my child to a government school was not only a commitment I made but a clear expression that I have enough confidence in the quality of our public schools for my child to attend.

“We have already given directives that all the staff of our Ministry of Education who are in charge of managing our education system must have their own children in government schools,’’ he said

On the abducted persons, the governor said the state government, parents and guardians of the victims as well as security agencies were doing everything possible to secure their release.

El-Rufa’I dismissed the insinuation that parents were withdrawing their wards from schools following the reported abduction of the students and teachers at the Engrave’s College in Kakau Daji.

The governor disclosed that the kidnappers had made contact with the parents of the students, demanding for ransom.

According to him, the state government has assembled the affected parents and the relations of the teachers in one place.

He said this was to ensure one line of communication with the kidnappers to facilitate speedy release of the victims, adding that the state government had no intention of paying ransom to the kidnappers.

“We got intelligent report of the likelihood of this danger three months ago. Like I said, we put in place measures that I don’t want to go into details.

“But any bandit that comes to Kaduna to try to do this has a very high chance of getting killed, that is all I can say; very high chance of getting killed,’’ he warned.

Politics / Like Sowore, Buhari Called For Revolution In 2011: Falana by chisomdoris: 4:35pm On Oct 04, 2019
Femi Falana, counsel to the convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore has defended his client for choosing the word “revolution” in the August 5 protest that held across the country.

Falana, said even the Supreme Court does not regard a revolution as a lawful offence and cited previous authorities by the Supreme Court to support his claim.

“Even a coup that sustains the statuesque has been said not to be a revolution by the Supreme Court.”

He stated also that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President, Muhammadu Buhari staged protests after they lost elections in 2003.

He said Buhari also called for a protest like that of Egypt.

“Buhari called for a revolution in 2011 like that of Egypt which was evidently violent.

“Only in 1948 was someone charged for staging a protest. And the charge was sedition,” he said.

Sowore’s counsel also mentioned prominent cases of people who were charged with treasonable felony, including APC leader Ahmed Tinubu, who were granted bail on self recognizance.

He argued also that the late Moshood Abiola was granted bail after he was charged with the same treasonable felony and asked the court to grant Sowore bail on self recognizance.

Politics / EFCC Arraigns Buhari’s Ex-adviser For Diverting N974m by chisomdoris: 8:36pm On Oct 03, 2019
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned a former Special Adviser on Niger Delta Matters to President Muhammadu Buhari for alleged fraud to the tune of N974 million and diversion of $1.9 million.

The defendant, Brig. Gen Paul Boroh (rtd.), was arraigned alongside Hanafi Moriki before Justice O. O. Goodluck of the FCT High Court on nine counts.

The EFCC said in a statement by its spokesman, Mr.Wilson Uwujaren, that the defendants on different occasions, dishonestly converted the sums of N8,601,571; N106,288,445; N12,078,450; N382,800,000; N456,000,000; N9,000,000 and more, while they were public officers.

Boroh, who was the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, was in March last year sacked by Buhari and replaced with Prof. Charles Dokubo.

It was reported that the EFCC and other security agencies were investigating him as millions of dollars were traced to him.

One of the charges preferred against them read in part, “That you, Paul Boroh and Hanafi, Moriki between the 1st of December 2016 and 30th July, 2017 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this honourable court whilst being public servants entrusted with property to wit funds of the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, dishonestly converted the sum of One Million, Seven Hundred and Fourteen Thousand United States Dollars to your own use and thereby committed an offense contrary to and punishable under section 315 of the Penal Code Law”.

They pleaded not guilty to all the counts brought against them by the EFCC.

In view of their plea, counsel for Boroh, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), prayed the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms, stating that his client willingly brought himself to court despite his failing health.

Counsel to the second defendant, OA Dada, also prayed the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms.

However, the prosecuting counsel, Aisha A.T Habib opposed the bail applications, stating that a counter affidavit had been filed against the applications and prayed the court to grant the case accelerated hearing.

The Judge granted Boroh and Moriki N2m and N20m bail respectively.

They were also asked to provide two sureties, not below the rank of assistant director in the federal public service, who must be resident in Abuja. The defendants are also to deposit their passports with the court registry.

Justice Goodluck thereafter adjourned the case till November 26, 27 and December 3 and 4, 2019 for trial.

Business / Facebook Launches ‘threads’ App Woven Into Instagram by chisomdoris: 8:22pm On Oct 03, 2019
Facebook on Thursday launched Threads, an image-centric messaging app designed to weave tight circles of Instagram friends together while ramping up its challenge to rival Snapchat.

‘Threads’ is its own separate smartphone app, but ties into lists of “close friends” that Instagram began letting users create late last year, according to director of product Robby Stein.

“Threads is the fastest way to share a photo or video with your close friends on Instagram,” Stein said.

“Messages from your close friends’ list will appear in both Threads and Direct, so you have full control over how and with whom you want to interact.”

The Threads app opens directly in smartphone cameras, making it easy to share photos or video in a visual messaging style that has been a hit with young users who have flocked to Snapchat and Instagram.

Letting people shift from broadcasting images publicly to sharing more privately is also in keeping with an emphasis by Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on creating “digital living rooms” rather than online “town halls.”

“For your smaller circle of friends, we saw the need to stay more connected throughout the day, so you can communicate what you’re doing and how you’re feeling through photos and videos,” Stein said.

“That’s why we built Threads, a new way to message with close friends in a dedicated, private space.”

‘Thread’ gives users the option of automatically sharing status updates including where they are, say at a cafe or on the go, without sharing exact locations.

The feature promises to raise privacy concerns, given the criticism that has pounded Facebook regarding how well it safeguards people’s data.

“You can choose from a suggested status, create your own or turn on Auto Status, which automatically shares little bits of context on where you are without giving away your coordinates,” Stein said.

“Only your close friends will see your status, and it’s completely opt-in.”

Threads began rolling out globally for smartphones powered by Apple or Google-backed Android software.

Politics / Oshiomhole Attacks Gov. Dickson, Tells Governorship Candidate What To Do by chisomdoris: 8:09pm On Oct 03, 2019
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, has urged the party’s Bayelsa governorship candidate, Mr David Lyon, to pass messages of change to the people rather than engage in hate speech.

Oshiomhole gave the advice in Abuja on Thursday at a reconciliation meeting with the party’s stakeholders and aggrieved governorship aspirants from the state, NAN reports.

“I also want to appeal to Lyon not to join political opponents to engage in hate speech. They will provoke you to divert from your path to distract your attention and you will be busy attacking them.

“What you need is to pass your message of change to the people of Bayelsa.

“When they concentrate on abusing you, you concentrate in mobilising the people, amplifying what they would have gotten by now which they have lost because of the leadership qualities they are lacking,” he said.

Oshiomhole also condemned what he described as gutter language used by Gov.
Seriake Dickson to describe the APC governorship candidate, over political difference.

“APC rejects and condemn in strong term the raw language unbecoming of the office of a governor, the way he has described our candidate.

“We will not go to his own level. on this occasion, we will invoke a popular statement made by Michelle Obama at the peak of the last presidential election in US when she said when they go low, we fly high.

“So when Dickson goes low, we will fly high. We will not join him in using gutter language to describe neither his office or his person, or even their candidate who is about to be defeated,” Oshiomhole said.

He said that the meeting was to build and make peace as well as working towards unity of members in order to have a united party.

Oshiomhole, who said that the party’s National Working Committee and Bayelsa APC stakeholders had a peaceful meeting, said that two aggrieved aspirants who went to court, challenging the election of Lyon had been addressed

Politics / Corruption Is Nigeria’s War, Says Salisu Shehu by chisomdoris: 6:09am On Sep 29, 2019
Deputy Secretary-General of Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Salisu Shehu, has identified unbridled corruption as the major factor militating against the country’s socio-economic and political development.

Prof. Shehu, who chaired the 2019 Annual Symposium with Religious Leaders in the Northeast zone, organised by Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies (Mambayya House), Bayero University, Kano (BUK), in conjunction with MacArthur Foundation, lamented that the unbridled corruption in the country has deprived the common man the needed social amenities such as good roads, hospitals, schools, job creation and good governance.

According to him, while countries like Iran and Iraq are ravaged by physical war, but enjoy adequate infrastructural amenities, Nigeria has been ravaged by systematic corruption which has permeated even into the circles of religious leaders.

According to him, “Corruption is our own war. Corruption is the very war Nigeria is facing; because of corruption, there is no electricity, our hospitals are not functioning, our education system is in shambles. Iran and Iraq are ravaged by war, Nigeria is ravaged by corruption.”

He also fingered corruption as the major reason why the war against insurgency in the Northeast has not yielded the desired results, pointing out that, “corruption has made the fight against insurgency almost impossible. So, we should do our best as religious leaders to stamp out corruption in the society.” He regretted the fact that corruption has become endemic in mosque and churches, noting that, “we should do something very quickly to fight corruption because religious leaders are the last resort and the light in the society.

In his welcome address, the Director of Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Prof. Ismaila M. Zango, urged participants to engage their congregations and communities around them on the need to eradicate corruption for a better society. “In the nearest future, the fight against corruption will shift from government agencies to the people within the communities because through consistent awareness, people are getting to know the danger posed by corruption against the growth and development of the nation.”

Sports / Gary Lineker Twitter Exchange Over Messi Ronaldo For FIFA Best Player Goes Viral by chisomdoris: 5:22am On Sep 29, 2019
Leo has won the award on Monday. Morgan, who recently interviewed Cristiano, has taken to social media to slam the final outcome of the vote. Lineker has hit out at Piers to claim that the ‘fact he interviewed Ronaldo doesn’t make him better’.

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan was certainly disappointed with Lionel Messi winning the FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year award for 2019 on Monday. Morgan made a huge interview with Cristiano Ronaldo last week where the Portuguese revealed he ‘deserves more Ballon d’Ors than Messi’. Piers was among the first to take to social media and lament the Juventus star’s 3rd place finish behind Leo and Liverpool’s Van Dijk.

“In 2019.. One footballer won 2 domestic & 1 national titles, & became 1st to 100 wins & 125 goals in Champions League, 1st current player to 700 official goals & 1st to win Premier League, Série A & La Liga. Clue: it wasn’t Lionel Messi who just won FIFA Best Player,” he tweeted.

BBC Match of the Day presenter and former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker, in his turn, has shut Morgan down with a brilliant response.

Crime / Killing Of Python Caused Cows’ Death On Ondo Sacred Hill - Indigenes by chisomdoris: 6:15am On Sep 25, 2019
MORE facts emerged on Tuesday concerning the mysterious death of 36 cows on Okeowa hill in Ijare, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

It was learnt from indigenes of the town that the herders killed a big python on the Okeowa hill.

The killing of the snake, according to them, is a taboo and against the tradition of the community.

Thirty-Six cows owned by some herders died mysteriously in the community after they were said to have been struck by lightning on Saturday.
The traditional ruler and people of the community confirmed that the cows died after they desecrated the Okeowa hill, where sacrifice is made every year by their monarch.

But a source in the town said the cows died because the people abandoned the annual ritual at Okeowa hills.

“When you get to the palace, ask them when last they worshipped on Okeowa,” he said.

The Miyetti Attah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria in the state described the death of the 36 cows as an act of God.

Its Chairman, Bello Garba, said members of the association had visited the area to ascertain what was responsible for the death of the cows.

He noted that their findings showed that the cows were not poisoned, as being insinuated in some quarters.

Garba said his members would always live in peace with the host communities.

He added that the association would continue to sensitise its members on the need to avoid sacred areas when grazing animals, to prevent a recurrence.

Politics / Re: Buhari To Governors: Don’t Fix Fed Roads If You Will Ask For Refund by chisomdoris: 5:51am On Sep 25, 2019
Lalasticlala mynd44
chisomdoris:
DUE to the huge amount requested by state governors after repairing Federal roads in their domains, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked them to stop fixing such roads.

Works and Housing Minister Babatunde Fashola stated this at a two-day interactive session with the Francis Uduyok-headed Ad Hoc Committee on Abandoned Federal Government Projects (Works) from 1999 till date.

Fashola said: “What has happened to states; that’s another thing. The states submitted a bill of almost N1 Trillion when President Buhari was elected. He asked us to work out what was their entitlement and all of that.

“Ultimately, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) certified about N454 billion. I don’t remember the exact amount now, except for two states. I think Cross River… There’s another state that didn’t have the documents at the time…

“But the decision to pay those inherited debts, including the ones I contracted as governor of Lagos, was with the caveat that I should tell the governors to leave Federal roads alone. Those were the directives. I was not the one that took the decision.

“He said, ‘Tell them not to fix my roads again if they’re going to claim compensation. If you want to fix it and not ask for compensation, send me what you want to do. But if you want compensation, go and mind your business while I mind my business. This is because I have inherited enough debts.'”

Giving a breakdown of the roads, the minister said Federal roads constituted about 18 per cent of the national road network, covering about 200,000 kilometres.

He said the remaining 16 per cent belonged to the states and 64 per cent to the 774 local government areas.

Fashola explained that the amount of inherited debts was more than the budget of the ministry. “So, that’s the reality,” he said.

On the complaint by the National Assembly that the ministry was overstretching itself thin by handling 472 road projects at once, the minister said the incessant demands by lawmakers was partly responsible for the high number of projects in the ministry and conversely, continuous budget cuts was responsible for the abandoned projects.

The minister said there must be a stop to new projects to allow for the completion of old projects.

He said consensus and sacrifice were necessary for development “because our money is not enough for what we want to build”.

To solve the cash flow problem, Fashola said the ministry was looking towards raising capital from the organised private sector (OPS), such as SUKUK and Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.

According to him, the SUKUK fund was targeted at about 28 roads out of 472 federal road projects.

This, he said, was initiated by the Buhari administration to target some important projects, including the Second Niger Bridge, East-West road, Lagos-Ibadan-Abuja-Kano rail projects and the Mambilla Power project.

Politics / Falana To FG: Propose Money Bill Before Implementing Increase In VAT by chisomdoris: 2:18pm On Sep 21, 2019
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Federal Government to propose a Money Bill to the National Assembly before the implementation of the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT).

Falana told the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Abuja, said that the National Assembly (NASS) erred by inviting the Minister of Finance and the Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to clarify issues of VAT increment.

According to him, provisions of the constitution states that the President ought to have presented a money bill to be passed by the NASS before the increment.

“It’s illegal, under a democratic dispensation you cannot impose tax or increase tax without a law made by the National Assembly or the State Assembly as the case may be.

“In this case, it has to be realised that we are not under a military dictatorship.

“By virtue of section 59 of the Nigerian Constitution, any increase, levy or tax will have to be presented to the National Assembly by way of money Bill by the President, it has to be passed into law.

“The Senate erred in law by inviting them to come and clarify, the National Assembly has invited the Minister of Finance and the Federal Inland Revenue Services to come and clarify.

” No, the National Assembly must insist on its powers under Section 59 to pass a law to increase VAT or any tax, there can be no taxation without a legislation.

“The Federal Executive Council has no power under the Constitution to increase VAT or any tax in the country,” Falana said.

NAN recalls that the Federal Executive Council had last Wednesday approved the increment of VAT from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, had explained that the increase would only begin after the VAT Act was amended by the National Assembly and after consultations with the state and local government areas as well as the Nigerian populace.

According to her, our projection is to finish consultations early enough so that it takes effect in 2020.

She further disclosed that the FEC approved the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategic Paper, MTEF/FSP for 2020 to 2022, which will guide the 2020 Budget.

The Minister also said the next step was to present the document to the National Assembly for consideration.
