Politics / Doctors Call Off Two-month Strike In Imo After Meeting Gov. Ihedioha by chisomdoris: 6:42am On Jun 06, 2019
The striking members of the Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) have called off their two-month-long industrial action after meeting with the state Governor, Emeka Ihedioha.

The doctors who are in the employment of the state government had embarked on industrial action in April following the non-implementation of the agreement reached with the immediate past administration headed by Owelle Rocha Okorocha on increased funding for the health sector, full payment of their salaries, as well as the payment of their three-months arrears.

However, State Chairman of the NMA, Dr Duruewuru Kyrian said in a press briefing on Wednesday that they decided to call off their strike after meeting Governor Ihedioha at the Government House.

According to him, “we have decided to call off our industrial strike following a meeting with Governor Emeka Ihedioha today (Wednesday) at the Government House.

“At the meeting, we had tabled our grievances which include rehabilitation of the access road to the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Umuna Orlu, payment of 100 per cent salaries of medical doctors in the employment of the state and the payment of our three-months of arrears.

“He also agreed to provide more funding and re-equipping of the state General Hospitals.”

Politics / Oyegun Vs Oshiomhole: APC Spokesman, Nabena Seeks Buhari’s Intervention by chisomdoris: 3:02pm On Jun 05, 2019
Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Yekini Nabena has called on the leader of the party, President Muhammadu Buhari, to intervene in the current face-off between the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and his predecessor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Nabena, who addressed journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, said that Buhari as the leader of the party must lead fence-mending efforts and address obvious grievances among stakeholders.

Nabena described as worrisome the string of electoral losses by the APC in some states, and most recently Zamfara state.

He said, “The losses the APC suffered during the 2019 General Elections in some states which we previously controlled is indeed worrisome.

“However, we are still the governing party which produced the President; control majority states and have an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly.

“Compared to the failed Peoples Democratic PDP, the APC remains the political party of choice for both Nigerians and politicians.

“I urge our aggrieved members to remain in the APC fold and settle their differences. In fact, in a few months, we expect a huge influx from members of the rudderless PDP and other political parties into the APC.

“Elections have been won and lost. High-level meetings such as National Caucus and the National Executive Committee NEC are there to address party matters.

“I call on our respected leaders, particularly the current and immediate-past National Chairmen to end their public hostilities, particularly in the media for the sake of the party and focus on the important task of forming government at the state and federal levels to deliver on our Next Level mandate.

“We need a united house to ensure the growth and strength of our party.

“In the immediate, I call on President Muhammadu Buhari as the leader of our party to lead fence-mending efforts and address obvious grievances in many states and among stakeholders in the party.

“The ongoing war of words between some top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly the current National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and immediate-past National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is unnecessary, a distraction and is weakening the governing party.”

Politics / 260 Aggrieved APC Members Beg Osinbajo To Accommodate Them by chisomdoris: 8:53pm On Jun 04, 2019
No fewer than 260 aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State have urged Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) to accommodate them in the ruling party.

The APC members said they obtained nomination forms to contest for the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly primary but the party did not give them opportunity.

They had late last year approached the Federal High Court in Akure challenging the party for failure to conduct the party primary elections of 2018 /19 election year.

The crisis was almost consuming the party as key leaders spread across the state felt disenchanted with the non-conduct of the primary elections in the state.

However, early this year, a reconciliatory committee was set up by the national body of APC comprising the then governors of Borno, Lagos, Kaduna and DG-NIMASA, former Deputy Governor of Ekiti Prof. Mrs Adelabu, and the Secretary (woman) from Kano State.

They reportedly met with the Ondo APC aggrieved Aspirants at the Ekiti State Governor’s office where recommendations were made.

But the group in a letter on Tuesday sent to the Vice President and signed by the former Speaker of the Ondo State Assembly, Kenneth Olawale, said up till now, the recommendation had not seen the light of the day.

The letter added, “Subsequently, a meeting was held in Akure chaired by His Excellency, the vice – president of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo (SAN) and attended by other National leaders of the Party with the aggrieved aspirants that went to court, where it was agreed upon, that the pre-election suit pending in the Federal High Court be withdrawn.

“The VP then urged the aggrieved aspirants to work for the party’s victory with a promise to compensate them. Consequently the case was withdrawn and the aggrieved aspirants worked assiduously for the party in the State.

“We were expecting the team led by the vice president to fulfill its part of the agreement which included but not limited to compensations in lieu of costs incurred by these aspirants in the buildup to the primary elections that was never allowed to take place in the State.

Politics / ‘INEC, APC Frustrating My Petition Before Tribunal’ – Abba Yusuf Cries Out by chisomdoris: 8:37am On Jun 04, 2019
Kano State gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kabir Abba-Yusuf, has expressed dismay over the alleged slow pace at which the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is handling the party’s request of election documents.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Kano, Yusuf accused the electoral umpire of conniving with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in order to delay the process so as to deny him access to the election materials.

He spoke after he visited the INEC headquarters in Kano, where he went to find out reasons for the ‘sluggish nature’ with which INEC was handling the exercise, but met no official on seat to attend to his request.

“If you will recall, since the court case came up, we have petitioned the tribunal and requested them to mandate INEC to give us the photocopies of all the necessary election documents, but unfortunately, things have been going very sluggishly,” he said.

He further explained that there was an ex parte order compelling INEC to issue all the electoral documents needed to be presented before the tribunal, but that nothing much had been achieved.

“At the expiration of the ex parte order, INEC asked us to vacate their premises; that they could not give any other document. That necessitated us to go back to court to seek for an extension of time, which was granted,” he said.

Yusuf said, unfortunately, INEC was still reluctant to issue the documents as only a voters’ register from one out of the 44 local government areas was made available.

“We are confused, we don’t know whether INEC is conniving with the powers that be to deny us this right so that they could buy time to amend all the defects and flaws that they did during the election,” he said.

He appealed to INEC not to be partisan and do what was right and be fair to all parties.

Politics / Okorocha Vs INEC: Court States When Case Will Be Decided by chisomdoris: 12:58pm On Jun 03, 2019
A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed Friday June 7, 2019, for judgment in the suit by former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, against the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Okorocha is seeking a court order to compel INEC to issue him a certificate of return.

The presiding judge, Justice Okon Abang, chose the date for judgment, after entertain final arguments from lawyers representing parties in the case.

The immediate past Imo State Governor, by the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/296/2019, is asking the court to, among others, compel the electoral umpire to issue him a certificate of return as the senator-elect for Imo West Senatorial District.

Okorcha maintained that INEC lacked the statutory powers to withhold his certificate of return, because he was validly elected to occupy the senatorial seat.

The former Governor equally wants the court to declare that INEC acted in error when it refused to recognise him as the winner of the senatorial election in Imo West district.

Okorocha argued that the Returning Officer had declared that he won the election.

Politics / Wike Sacks Rivers Road Agency Management by chisomdoris: 11:59am On Jun 03, 2019
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, asked the management of the Rivers State Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Agency to leave office.

A statement by Simeon Nwakaudu, his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, said the directive was with immediate effect.

“The members of the Agency have been directed by the Rivers State Governor to hand over all documents and property of the Agency to the Director of Administration,” it said.

The statement added that the governor will meet with the Chairman and members of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board by 3pm on Monday at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House, Port Harcourt.

The meeting is expected to discuss the recent incident at a secondary school in the state.

A video of students in disarray as a result of a panic caused when a chemical substance was detonated Friday, in Community Secondary School, Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt trended on Social media.

Initial reports said secondary school students brought in weapons ahead of a planned cult clash between SS2 and SS3 pupils.

Rivers State Police Command, in a statement by the spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, spoke on the incident.

“On receipt of the complaints, the Police arrested 18year old Nicodemus Nkaparu and 17year of Darlington Sylvanus”, it said.

“The Principal made statement in relation to her complaints and the two suspects were equally cautioned and made statements where they admitted detonating the substance but however denied knowing the substance was a Chemical substance capable of causing panic and tension.

“In his statement, Nicodamus Nkaparu confirmed to have brought the canister from their House which is part of the belongings of his deceased brother who was also a Police Officer.

“But unknown to him, his friend, Darlington Sylvanus detonated the substance which threw the whole school into confusion as people scampared for safety while some sustained injuries.

“That at the end of the investigation, the suspects were given administrative bail and released unconditionally and asked to return on Monday, May 27th.

“That the incident in Community Secondary School, Oroworukwo was not a terrorist attack not an attempt to kidnap any student. That is was not a semblance of a cult clash.

“Investigation is still ongoing with a view to unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing the culprits to justice,” Omoni stated.

Politics / ‘withdraw Itse Sagay’s SAN Title’ – Lagos PDP Tells LPPC, Others by chisomdoris: 8:27am On Jun 03, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State has charged the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) and the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association and the courts to withdraw all the privileges that Prof Itse Sagay enjoys as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
https://thickmatch.com/speakership-race-gbajabiamila-not-tinubus-candidate-orji-kalu/

The party, in a statement yesterday by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately replace Sagay as the Chairman of the committee.

According to the Lagos PDP, the security agencies must arrest, interrogate and prosecute Sagay for his comments allegedly capable of provoking civil unrests in the country.

Sagay had faulted Supreme Court’s rulings, which upheld the PDP as the winner of the 2019 general elections in Rivers and Zamfara states, and barred the All Progressives Congress from contesting offices.

But Gani said, “Prof Sagay exposed his hatred for the PDP when he described the Supreme Court judgment by positing that ‘in the next four years, Zamfara State will be governed by a party and politicians rejected by the electorate.’

“To the PDP, these words and stance are inciting and unbecoming of a senior lawyer and must be taken seriously as professional misconduct within the contemplation of Section 24(1)(a) and (b) of the rules of professional conduct.

“To us as a party in Lagos State and from where most of these false activists speak, Prof Sagay is no more a fit and proper personality to head a presidential advisory committee against corruption. We charge the LPPC, the LPDC, the NBA and the courts to withdraw all privileges Prof Itse Sagay enjoys as a SAN.”

Gani said Sagay had showed enough obvious partisanship and support for the APC, adding that one needed not wonder why all the APC chieftains were “saints” before the Sagay-led PACAC.

He said, “With Sagay as an adviser, the advised is at his own risk. It is very laughable that Sagay attempts to be an appellate court to the Supreme Court.”

Earlier, the PDP had accused the PACAC chairman of instigating anarchy and rebellion against constitutional democratic order and reule of law.

Politics / Speakership Race: Gbajabiamila Not Tinubu’s Candidate – Orji Kalu by chisomdoris: 8:16am On Jun 03, 2019
Former Abia State Governor and Senator-Elect, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has said Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the position of speaker in the 9th assembly.

Kalu said this on Sunday in Abuja when Gbajabiamila led a delegation from his campaign Organisation on visit to his house to solicit for support.

The senator-elect, representing Abia Central, pledged to offer necessary support to ensure his victory as speaker.

He said that Gbajabiamila was not a candidate of Sen. Ahmed Tinubu, the APC National Leader as being speculated by some sections of the society.

“There is no doubt that people have been blackmailing you that you are a candidate of Tinubu, but the president have told us collectively and individually that you are a candidate of the APC.

“In my private section with Mr. President recently, he said his two candidates for the leadership of the 9th National Assembly are Lawan, for the Senate President and Femi for Speaker, House of Representatives.

“His choice of the two candidates is because the president believes that they can defend the interest of the party. Since he has said so, you are not Tinubu’s candidate,” he said.

Kalu said that Gbajabiamila was a bipartisan candidate for every political party represented in the 9th National Assembly, NAN reports.

According to him, constitutional democracy requires that the majority party produces leaders of the assembly.

“The era of a minority party leading the National Assembly had gone since Nigeria was operating constitutional democracy.

“The thinking that the precedent of the 8th assembly would continue, people should know that it would not be possible.

“We have concluded the issues on senate leadership and I can assure you that between now and four days, we will conclude that of the House of Representatives.

“We have no alternative as legislators than to come together as one big family and support the President to realise his next level agenda.

“We need to support the president in rebuilding the economy because we need to concentrate in giving Nigerians economic prosperity,” he added.

Gbajabiamila, on his part said the visit was to solicit support, encouragement and blessings from the former governor and senator-elect, adding that his campaign team had gone round the country soliciting for support.

He said that his 30 years cumulative legislative experience would give him an edge, adding that he had achieved, even when he was in the minority.

According to him, the 9th assembly is going to be an assembly like no other because things are going to be done differently.

“The Office of the Speaker is going to be an office of all Nigerians irrespective of ethnic group, religion and political party affiliation.

“We intend to run an inclusive 9th assembly because the theme of our campaign is ‘Nation Building’, and a Joint Task is our logo.

“We embedded mini logos of every single party represented in the National Assembly.

“It is going to be a joint task for all of us, we don’t believe one single political party can do it alone,” he said.

Politics / Governor Ihedioha: Okorocha Failed To Handover Financial Documents by chisomdoris: 8:09am On Jun 03, 2019
The Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, has decried the failure of his immediate predecessor, Rochas Okorocha to handover documents containing the financial stance of the state to him.

Ihedioha lamented that he has no documents showing the financial status of the state, hence the difficulty of his administration to hit the ground running.

Against this backdrop, the governor said he asked all financial institution to stop transacting with his predecessor.

The governor also decried the condition of the state’s Government House, saying he can’t work from office.

He maintained that the Government House was an eye sore.

Vanguard quoted Ihedioha as saying yesterday: “We have difficulties operating from Imo Government House now. But I told Imo people that we will start work and give no excuses.

“We will give dividends of democracy irrespective of the state of facilities I inherited from the outgone administration.

“The government that ended was not prepared to handover or ready to receive us. I thank Imo people for receiving us and we shall serve the state with the fear of God.
“All financial institutions that have a relationship with Imo State Government should not honour any withdrawal instruction by cheques, transfers or in any form.

“No financial mandates, ISPOs or any form of financial instruction should be treated. All outstanding financial instructions already with banks and financial institutions should be put on hold.

“This directive covers all the accounts of ministries, departments, parastatals, local government councils, quasi-government agencies and all revenue generating organs of government.

“Banks and non-bank financial institutions are to take note and ensure compliance, as the state government will not be responsible for any disbursement, effected contrary to this directive.”
