Here is a scoop for you: There was never any such thing as "Ika" until after the war
Their name was Ika-Igbo
They dropped the Igbo part so as not to be marginalised in Nigeria but they can't drop their Igbo names or language or cultures
Ika-Igbos made up the bulk of Biafran field commanders
The bolded is a decision taken by a people. I think its good that their decision is respected.

The word 'igbo' was definitely coined out one day too. Today its respected as a tribe in general. So if the Ika say they are Ika people and not igbo people, I feel its best they are left alone as ika people.

There was a time Urhobo, Isoko, itsekiri, Etsako as different tribes never existed, they were all just clans in the benin kingdom with diFferent ways of speaning. Today they are identified for what they say they are.

Goodmorning bro.

bayooooooo:
Well, the real issue is not what Sunday Oliseh calls himself(I think he is in a best position to know who he is ) but what others perceive him to be. I think most non-Ika-speaking people would, on first instinct, call him Igbo. I have always thought He's Igbo but I can now see I was clearly wrong. I guess most Nigerians from the North, on first instinct, would categorize such names as Omatseye, Omatsola, Omawunmi, Omajuwa, Omagbemi, Oritsemeyiwa, Oritsemodupe, Oritsejafor, etc as Yoruba. It's only people from part of the South who understand the nuances that can actually differentiate and thus properly categorize the names as Itsekiri.

It's a bit difficult for me to call someone who bears Ogochukwu, something other than Igbo. Based on this stereotype, he would have benefited from being perceived to be Igbo but also suffered from similar perception in some circumstances. That may explain while some, who are not as bold as Sunday oliseh, present different faces to different people. When they thought their perceived Igboness would be helpful, they claimed Igbo. Otherwise, they claimed something different.

The real problem lies with people who treat them based on what they perceived them to be without giving them a chance to define themselves. Thus a man could be favored or punished for who he is not. That's the problem of double identity and part of Nigeria's complexities.

In this Small-Big intra-linguistic identity schism, the more successful the larger group becomes, the less the likelihood it claims the smaller one but paradoxically, the more the smaller one craves to be identified with the bigger group. The identity crisis is thus, in a way, a product of brand management. Since they can choose to be either A or B, it comes down to just one question: Do I gain or lose more by being seen as A or B?
As simple and clearly explained as you have done here, some will still want to attack you for stating the obvious.

Nice analysis btw.

Nobody is a minority in his own land! angry
The ikas are a tribe in the matrix of the Igbo nation.. They're not minorities.. just like the enuani or ukwuani or even the aros or ukwas.they're are on the same pedestal, none is higher or lower than the other.
Minorities exist outside Igboland which means that every Igbo or Igbolike tribe is no minority angry
Judging from the post, an Ika man has denied being called an igbo man so he can't be placed in the igbo nation is his people share his views. Best he will have his own nation called the IKA nation.
Just as the Urhobo nation is independent of the Benin nation even though they both share the same ancestral history.

Tell an Anambra man that an ika or Ukwani, or even a man from ebonyi is not minority to him.

Let's speak the truth here please...the real facts on ground are way deeper than what we can say online....Even among core igbo speaking states, there is discrimination, talk less of an igboid from Delta state.

Very churlish thing to say "drop our names" The reality is that many groups that call themselves Igbo today never did so before Nigeria was created to the question of ownership of language or names is silly. What about names like Peter and Paul and Marinus that Ibos use everywhere. We speak English and use it on this website does that make us English? This desire to bully and intimidate minorities should be eschewed. He said he is NOT IBO and that is the end of it

The thing is, the statement is loaded with history, especially history of especially Ika people not only partly denying they are Igbo, as well as benefiting from the trajectory of the wider Igbo people under the guise of Anioma, but there's also anti-Igbo sentiment in his tone, it was completely unnecessary for him to say he was not Igbo, he could just say his name and say where he was from. He just sounded insecure, as if he didn't want any Igbo person associating with him, and that's fine, but don't try and insult anybody, and that's why he's being scolded.
Oh that was very wrong of him (the anti igbo tone).
I thought someone asked him if he is igbo.

The Jekri people have no territorial contiguity with Igboland so where did the Igbo names come fromhuh
They're surrounded by Ofei,Bini,Sobo & Izon tribes so its natural they answer names from those places.
Stop peddling lies to buttress a weak point.. angry moreover the Ikas are Igbos that migrated from owere in the 11th century so it's wrong for them to deny their heritage angry
In Biafra, they'd ve their own cultural area which would also be a province with autonomous powers to develop at their pace but that's it.in history, they served as the westernmost fortress of Igboland and would continue to do so. smiley
Like I said, if they say they are not igbos, that they are ika, you MUST respect them for who they say they are...you wouldn't force your tribe on them.

You can't cry of oppression and bondage in Nigeria yet you don't want minorities like these ones to be free...... I believe there is an english word starting with H for such character.

A clan is different from a tribe
An Ika man is to Igboland what an Egba man is to yorubaland
True.
But in some situations, especially with minorities, a clan is the tribe. In ika land, do u know there are subclans?

By Igboland and Yorubaland you mean? Would you classify the yorubalike speaking itsekiris under yoruba land? Or the Yorubalike speaking akoko edos under yorubaland?
Do you know there are yorubalike tribes in togo, Benin even as far as serria-leone? These people refuse to be called yorubas explicitly...you hear names like esan, akokoedo, afemai, itsekiri, fon, ewe etc...that's their tribe, not yoruba.

As regards the ika people, I am not ika so I can't speak for them, but if Sunday Oliseh's view is carried by many of his kinsmen, then they are Ika, their language might sound igbotic but its IKA language as they have called it, not igbo.

If they can't call your anambra pure igbo as Ika or ukwanni, then you shouldn't be at liberty to call their own Ika language as igbo.

I understand your point tho.
Me I just wish we should learn to live and let live.

He didn't actually say he's an Ika man, he just blurted out he's not Igbo as if there was something wrong with that, if he simply said my name is actually Ika it would have made sense, he didn't mention Ika once, he simply referred to Abavo as a small village.
Oh, if he sounded arrogant and insultive then its understandable.
But if he just said he is not igbo, in a cool tone then there's nothing wrong in saying you are not what you are not.

Seriously, I don't blame them. All this things you have said can best be understood by people that come from Edo and Delta state. Even yorubas find it difficult to understand. I have met severally yorubas calling benis yurubas and using the world Oba has a prove. Most people find it difficult to understand why benin is small while the benin empire was vast. If you see it from their perspective, you would understand them.
The Benin empire had respect for others, keep your tribe and your traditions but work with us in a system of government that would ensure our collective security and government....that was the Benin empire logic and it worked quite well while it lasted.
These days Yorubas respect every other tribe as what they are....I've not seen a yoruba these days trying to claim ownership of another tribe. Even extremely close tribes like the egun people are called EGUN PEOPLE by core yorubas... I wish the igbos will also start respecting other people and what they choose to be identified as instead of cursing and trying to force their tribe on others.

Anyway, time will tell, I just pray this Biafra dream comes through for them....very very very very few SS people will want to join them......

Because Ika is not a tribe.
And igbo is a tribe right? That's the problem, you guys just keep ridiculing people, where they are from and what they choose to call themselves.
I am from urhobo, I font go to edo state to call my etsako sister an urhobo woman because our language look alike, or call the isoko man an urhobo even though we speak almost same language.
The yorubas have not come to delta to Lord over the itsekiris cos their language is like yoruba...the Benin have not come to lord over the urhobos cos we bear names that look alike....

Just learn to respect other people and what/where they are from and people will learn to live in peace with u.

If he says he is Ika, who are you to tell him that Ika is not a tribe?....there are pockets of yorubalike speaking tribes in Edo and Delta, the yorubas respect these tribes as akoko edo and itsekiris respectively. If someone comes and tells you that he is Ika and not igbo, respect him as an ika man just as he respects u as an igbo man. You don't have to insult and curse him for telling you that he is Ika and not igbo.

Was about to ask the same. I don't pay attention to ignorant people. Anyone who says some Itsekiri people have Igbo names should never be listened to. Never.
Next time try to make comments without insults.

You made the below statement in 2012 on this thread https://www.nairaland.com/1074601/relationship-between-itsekiri-igbo

Afam4eva:
Abagworo is looking at spelling rather than the pronunciation of these names.

Ani is an Igbo name too. never knew it was an Itsekiri name.

Oyibo
is also an Igbo name

Oritsejafor sounds like Afor or Ejiofor

......
Ignorance is a big word you know.

Hi, yes there are many pure undiluted itsekiri friends with igbolike names.
To.ju Chib.uzor O.ge.le you can add this guy up on fb and ask him questions.
There are many others that I've seen in the past. My brother's wife is Itsekiri and her name is Ifean.yi or Wunmi, her brother too has one long igbolike name and also a long yorubaish name.

Infact all itsekiri's I've seen have both igbolike and yorubalike names but many tend to keep the igbolike name on a low key for obvious reasons.

I'm surprised NL Igbos have not accused him of being Yoruba. After all anyone not in support of biafra or any SS that does not accept to be Igbo is Yoruba.
Anuofia!
I love you my akwaibom wife...muuuuuuuaaaaaah!!!
If Oliseh say's he is not igbo, that he is ika....why don't u respect him as an Ika man?

Ika can be part of Biafra if they choose to but if they decide to be called ika people rather than igbo people I feel its best they are respected and identified as who they are.

The itsekiris for example answer both igbo and yoruba names,....does that make them yoruba or igbo?...NO, they are itsekiris....
The Ika people cant come out tomorrow to say all other igbos are Ika and not igbo...I'm sure igbos from imo, abia, anambra, enugu and ebonyi won't accept such pronouncement from the Ika people.

My view, just respect people for who they choose to be....don't call them something else....

They are all flawed as I just checked.
Don't just read one verse of the bible...read the entire chapter and get what they are talking about. With a study bible you can also link chapters talking about the same thing.

I just had to check all u posted up here and all are flawed. Please if you are a christian, read the bible like a christian and not like someone reading a novel.
The Holy bible doesn't contradict itself, people and their translation/understanding are what contradict themselves...Gods word remain true, perfect, and not contradictory from time indefinite to time indefinite.
