I know what you meant, but that kind of attitude is childlish to me. There is a time when we say ''We need strong men''
Christianity EtcRe: The Mormon Religion by chrisd(m): 6:02pm On Dec 30, 2005
MY BASIC CHRISTIAN BELIEFS

1* God loves us and would like for us to live eternally with Him in glory.
2* Because of our sin (= willful rebellion), we are separated from God.
3* We cannot overcome sin by our own efforts.
4* Because God loves us, He came to earth in human form (as Jesus) and died on the cross to take the penalty for our sins.
5* Because Christ has died for us, salvation (= forgiveness of sin and reconciliation to God) is available as a free gift to anyone who is willing to receive it.
6* We receive salvation by making a life-changing commitment to Christ, not merely by accepting doctrines or joining an organization.

So in the end does not change much if they both are wrong, or if they create another dogma.

Being Gods.. I don't know about that. Surely I am not a God considering all the Bleep ups I do at work.
Christianity EtcRe: The Mormon Religion by chrisd(m): 5:25pm On Dec 30, 2005
Maybe, but it is not going to change much in the world is it? Better create a longer lasting light bulb or cure some disease in my opinion.

I like it to be planeed too and be proud of having that child. No one liked to be abondoned by their parents and being thought of an inconvience because it messed their parents life.
Christianity EtcRe: The Mormon Religion by chrisd(m): 5:14pm On Dec 30, 2005
In mormorism they have some concept to which one must adhere to, which in my opinion is a bit limited. I call it a philosophy rather than a religion as such.
Christianity EtcRe: The Mormon Religion by chrisd(m): 5:11pm On Dec 30, 2005
Dogma. Ok I understand now. Personally I am bit sceptical if one pushes dogma too much. You can get into fundamentalism very easy. Depends on the preacher I suppose.
Christianity EtcRe: To Tithe or Not to Tithe? by chrisd(m): 5:00pm On Dec 30, 2005
It depends how much money one earns. If one does not have much, christian belief requires that he does not have too little. So it is not expected that he gives 10% of what little he got. He'll die before his time.

Dogman? Know nothing about Dogman
IslamRe: Prophet Muhammad in the Bible by chrisd(m): 3:43pm On Dec 30, 2005
The word and acts and works of God which are most important. Does not change much what one believes about Jesus. Practice is more important than theology.

Main concerns for me are

1.Transgression
Disobedience to God

2.Unrighteousness
Doing what is unjust, immoral and wrong

3.Omission of known duty
A person that knows to do good works, and does not do them

4.Faithlessness
Failing to act on faithful conviction

5.Foolish thinking
Wicked or reckless planning

Much more important than where we put the role of Jesus or not. Let's say we fing also the human aspect in Jesus.

They should keep with his commandments. But remember they are not christians so they do not do exactly as most christians would like.
IslamRe: Prophet Muhammad in the Bible by chrisd(m): 3:06pm On Dec 30, 2005
Muslims recognize Jesus, but I don't think Christians recognize Mohammed though. He was not that bad. That's only my thinking
IslamRe: Prophet Muhammad in the Bible by chrisd(m): 3:04pm On Dec 30, 2005
Muslims think that way. Even Mohammed is considered prophet

Formal, organized religions are forming a substitute for thinking. People don't like to think, especially when they're in a bad situation. A morality born out of experience and philosophy is much harder to attain than just following the rules that one or another Christian sect offers. It's instant, fast-food righteousness., at the small price of some tithes or offerings.

On top of that the peer pressure in a religious society can be overwhelming, especially when the righteous church-goers equate religion with morality and claim/assume that someone that is not religious cannot possibly be a good person.

Also take into account that Christianity is a religion of salvation that promises eternal life in heaven to the faithful. The rules you have to follow as a Christian also have less impact on your everyday life in comparison with e.g. Islam.

All in all a very attractive offer for most people.
You can't be mre right than that. Agree fully.

I see three main problems

a. "Modernism" or "liberal" Christianity: Assume that historic Christianity can’t stand up to modern objections, but Christianity can be reworked into something that does. This is basically a late 19th-century movement but still has plenty of advocates, e.g., Bishop Spong, Why Christianity Must Change or Die, and many popular preachers (esp. in US).

b. Anti-intellectualism: Simply reject modern science and scholarship; "evolution is bunk" (maybe astronomy is bunk too); "all you need is your Bible."
This approach leaves us entirely unable to communicate with the modern world. This also dishonors God by refusing to use the minds and the knowledge He has given us.

c. "Christianity-in-a-bubble": Keep your faith separate from the rest of your intellectual life. This approach is associated with neo-orthodox theologians such as Karl Barth who revolted against modernism by asserting (correctly) that the Gospel does not make sense unless you accept it as the whole package.

Unfortunately, neo-orthodoxy is often just anti-intellectualism with a college degree. You still end up with a compartmentalized mind, assuming that faith is not rationally explainable or justifiable. Thus your faith does not connect with anything outside it. This movement has had a strong effect on evangelical churches.

Remember that the term "leap of faith" comes from an existentialist philosopher (Kierkegaard), not the Bible; and "ya gotta believe" is the motto Peter Pan, not Jesus.

I believe that Truth does not conflict with truth: We should not be afraid of seeking knowledge from any legitimate source (science, archeology, whatever).
Christianity EtcRe: Atheism - Is It A Belief Or A Position? by chrisd(m): 1:49pm On Dec 30, 2005
I agree with that. True. There are others of high intellectual status that are believers too. And it does not seem to contradict what they do either. Perhaps you know that the Director of the Genome Project is a Christian. Many people think that science has no human aspect. What a lot of nonsense. IT is the most human endevour one can get to. The EU is threating UGANDA because it wants it to withdraw the use of DDT. Because of DDT, 9 million lives are saved every year. That will be redused to under one million if it is to be witheld.

Christianity EtcRe: Atheism - Is It A Belief Or A Position? by chrisd(m): 1:34pm On Dec 30, 2005
I seen a lot of people that base their life on ONE AND ONLY ONE musty old book. Is not the best way to start off with. Maturity, I don't know about that, there have been the greatest philosophers and scientists of all time being atheists and that did not make them wrong either.

We are not supposed to zip up, but to take responsibility. Don't know why it should make a difference. It is as though they were married right?
Christianity EtcRe: Atheism - Is It A Belief Or A Position? by chrisd(m): 1:27pm On Dec 30, 2005
I agree. There is no clear cut definition. People has different reasons. I once went to this church and the only thing i heard was Hell Fire this and Hell Fire that, and so on and on. I hated it. How can people live that kind of pressure. Just crazy.
