Men are usually delusional in the way they assess themselves. They habitually ignore what matters most: their true rating in the sight of God. Some reassure themselves that He would not be bothered by their personal weaknesses - the things they consider to be small faults that even society may not necessarily frown at. They forget that before God, every offense, the big and the small, stands condemned.

The remnant of the children of Israel in Jerusalem were expected to learn from the experience of other Israelites that had gone into captivity. Instead, they grew worse in their disobedience to God. Their leaders secretly copied the practices of the heathen, until the Lord utterly abandoned them. The leaders became mischievous and by wicked counsel, misled the people. They convinced the common people that the worse was over for them; that Jerusalem was secure and would not be invaded again by enemies. When you tell the tale of a place you have personally visited, people tend to believe you more, because experience, they say, is the best teacher. If you have experienced it, you can preach it better. No one is more qualified to talk about hell and the life there, than someone who had passed a night at least there. How is the place like? What are they doing there? Who are the people there? Can there be any greater disaster to man's soul than hell, even as the world remembers International Day For National Disaster Reduction?

One thing that is common with the testimonies of those who claim they have visited hell, whether in dream, trance, or real life, is the agony and anguish the people there are subjected to. You wouldn't want to visit such a place, whether in real life or in the dream world. To strengthen your resolve not to visit or end up in hell, listen to the account of the rich man in Luke 16. While we cannot totally believe the claims of those hell visitors that we have around us today, so to say, this account cannot be debunked, because it is from the Master Himself, who alone came down from heaven. His testimony is real and faultless.

This “Jezebel” (vs. 20) represents the spiritual mother of all those within the church who promote antinomian (i.e., acts that are “against the law”) or libertine lifestyles (i.e., indulging freely in immoral pleasures). Such people feel that because of God’s grace (i.e. His unearned and underserved favour and love), they are not bound by any fixed rules or regulations including the moral standards of God’s law, they claim they have the liberty to engage in immoral behaviours without fear of punishment from God.

However, Christ will ultimately judge, condemn and destroy all those who promote such deception and destruction in the church. God was angry with Jezebel because she used three weapons against the children of God. One of such weapons was food. The devil is using this weapon against the children of God today. There are some people who are not serving God the way they should, because of too much food. Food and the stomach will perish one day.

There are many avenues through which demons can possess an individual.

One of them is alcoholism. The consumption of alcohol is a subtle habit that opens the door to various types of sins, all directed by one demon or the other.

These include violence, sexual immorality, pride, evil imaginations, folly and so on.

It is unfortunate that some believers are beginning to consider ‘moderation’ in the consumption of alcohol, quoting today’s memory verse out of context by insisting that the Bible does not caution us against drinking alcohol, but rather against getting drunk.

Sadly, It is this liberal approach to the handling of the issue of alcohol consumption that is increasing demonic operations in the lives that are supposed to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Many believers hold themselves to a standard the Lord has not prescribed for them. As a result, they become insecure in faith and they keep doubting their standing before God. Lacking in confidence and assurance of God’s love, they end up living a mediocre Christian life and fail to achieve their full potential in Christ.

The lady in our text was the well beloved of King Solomon. She correctly described herself as very dark and lovely. Yet, she was conscious of her appearance almost to a fault. She was dark complexioned and therefore, looked different from the women she found in Jerusalem who were all light skinned and are not given to hard work. She was accustomed to hard labour, having been forced by her siblings to care for the vineyard. She worked hard under the scorching sun, and soon became deeply dark.

Many people do not know that God always has replacement for the people He appoints for one task or the other. God cannot be held ransom on any issue or event. This is the reason He always provides alternatives.

When a child of God becomes swollen-headed and he or she begins to disobey Him in matters like soulwinning, tithing, offering, payment of first fruit and so on, such a fellow is on the way to being replaced. Purim is a Jewish festival held in the spring to commemorate the defeat of Haman’s plot to massacre the Jews as recorded in the book of Esther. It is celebrated by exchanging food and drinks and donating charity to the poor.

From our text, Esther was now enjoying her full rights as Queen and Mordecai now the Prime Minister over the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces under Ahasuerus’ kingdom. They wrote with all authority to the Jews of every language and clime confirming the celebration of Purim as days of national holiday. Under Mordecai, there was peace in the nations, and the Jews grew and prospered. The king also gave his full support to Mordecai and supported the Jews in every way he could.

A man of God once said, "A self-made man will be a self-destroyed man." Your walk and ministry in the Lord are not complete until you have a mentor/discipler. The people claim to take instructions from no one, and that they are not bound to obey anyone. They wallow and go down in ignorance, when God has surrounded them with teachers and fathers. They consider themselves as all in all, thinking they know all and know the way, forgetting that only God is the All-In-All.

Jesus never struggled with His identity, neither with self-esteem. The book of John has the highest record of “I am”. A divine assertion of His Godhead: “I am the Light, I am the Good Shepherd, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life, I am the Bread of Life, I am the Resurrection and Life” and so on. He declared that He is from above and that He is one with the Father.

He prayed for believers in John 17 that we should be one as He and His Father are one. This means that our divine original can only be found and defined through Christ. Any attempt to undermine this divine identity creates emptiness in your personality, which is the reason for the unhealthy self-esteem. Wallowing in unhealthy self-esteem will bring a lot of negative things into a Christian’s life.

Both harp and spear are instruments, though they do different works. While the former is a musical instrument, the latter is a weapon of war. David, a devoted and sweet Psalmist, loved playing on the harp right from his childhood. He was so prolific in this art that his service was required in the palace (c.f.Prov.22v29). He praised God and made others happy with his harp. We are all beneficiaries of some of his psalms of praise today.

In the Bible reading of today, we see terrible things that man does on the earth. However, being born of water and of the Spirit brings about a change, that is, divine transformation (John 3:3). John the Beloved said something deeper concerning this spiritual new birth:

“This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth.” “1 John 5:6” The mystery of the new birth cannot be understood except through the Spirit of God.

In the same epistle of John, we read: “He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” “1 John 3:89”

Walking with God requires living holy because He is holy. Amos 3:3 says “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

“And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” Genesis 17:1

Our Bible reading for today shows us some fundamental requirements for an acceptable walk with God. The first is clean hands. If your hands are defiled you cannot walk with God. What is it that defiles a person’s hands? Blood money is one. Money belonging to another person or organization that you took unlawfully is another. Also, your hands could be defiled through an illicit premarital or extramarital association. Proverbs 6:27-29 says:

The devil poses many things before believers in order to make them bow down to him. You should try to maintain your position in God. You cannot be a true child of God without being tested and examined by God Your Father. You should not allow little things of today to take you away from the faith. Many believers are facing different challenges that demand choice-making, whether to proceed or to quit. Do not quit. If you quit, you bow down to the devil and anyone who does that can be likened to the victims of a dog bite as the world commemorates World Rabies Day today. If you remain in faith and continue serving God, you are the first target or the devil.

The gospels recorded the story of Pilate, particularly in relation to the trial of our Lord Jesus Christ and the release of a prisoner, according to the Jewish laws at that point in time. This man knew the truth, was warned by his wife, saw no justifiable reasons for declaring Jesus guilty, yet he yielded to the pressure from the people.

He sought the favour of men against his conscience and the Truth. He was close to being saved, but he missed it. If only he realized that he was writing eternal history, even his own destruction. There are still many Pilates around, even in the church. Christians that get easily manipulated, such that they fall into compromise.

Men-pleasers, fame and popularity seekers, forgetting that it is God that promotes and celebrates a man. Unfortunately, in his ignorance, Pilate washed his hands! An outward show of, “my hands are clean”. He had forgotten or was ignorant of the fact that God does not look at the face of a man,

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse (v. 20).

i. Now is the time (Dan. 12:4) is actually being fulfilled on a large scale. Look at the craze for knowledge everywhere. People run back and forth, comparing text, trying to figure out new things. Some even go as far as peeping into the mystical world of cultism. Terrible! But God's standard remains sure (2 Tim. 2:19).
