PoliticsRe: Diversion of Public Funds Not Corruption Greatest Danger, Okonjo-iweala Laments by ChroniclesNg(m): 8:35pm On Oct 23, 2018
[quote author=Agritech post=72353310]Okonjo-Iweala, who was a Managing Director of the World Bank and currently sits on Twitter's Board of Directors, also said the greatest danger corruption poses for a nation — beyond the diversion of public funds — is that it corrodes its value system.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former Minister of Finance, has identified a very small percentage of Nigeria’s population — the “kleptocratic elites” maintaining a “stranglehold” on the country — as the ones giving Nigeria a very bad name.
She stated this while speaking at a plenary session tagged ‘Promoting Good Governance for Peace and Security’ at the 2018 International Anti-Corruption Conference (IACC) going on in Copenhagen, Denmark.
She noted that this realisation — and for majority of people — made her commit to fight corruption.
Nigeria's two-time Minister for Finance said the fight against corruption should not be left to the government alone but individuals must be involved as well.
“We, Nigerians, have to commit and it’s not just government; each individual has to make commitment to try to fight,” she said.
Okonjo-Iweala, who was a Managing Director of the World Bank and currently sits on Twitter's Board of Directors, also said the greatest danger corruption poses for a nation — beyond the diversion of public funds — is that it corrodes its value system.
She said: “People get passionate about the issue of money diverted that could have been used for education or health. We all talk about it, but let me tell you that the worst thing about corruption is the way it corrodes the value of a society; the way it insidiously undermines integrity, trust, and the very fabric of society.
“What I found in my country now [is that] it is very difficult to get a young person that believes they can actually achieve something on merit. The person wants a job, they look for someone who is going to introduce them to someone and that is because of that.
“We cannot allow a small minority to undermine the majority in a country, so that is the issue and we cannot allow the young people to lose hope because we have got a vibrant, interesting country and we have got a vibrant interesting continent and we have to fight for it.
“When we talk about fight corruption; we focus on punitive... and on getting the people who perpetuated it and not allowing impunity and that is very important; that matters and we must do it. But, it is not all, because if we don’t fix the underlying system that allowed the corruption in the first place, you will just get a new set of people and a new set of corruption.
“The difference between developing and developed countries is not that the developed countries have more integrity or more morals, it is just that over time they have built stronger institutions and we see that even that can be undermined.
“Institutions matter in both developed and developing countries to fight corruption, and the minute a society turns its attention away from safeguarding its institutions and values, it is shooting itself in the foot. So, what I found is that in my country, we had weak, very weak institutions to non-existent institutions.”
She added that while institutions might not solve all the problems, they reduce the likelihood of corruption.
Okonjo-Iweala also said an independent judiciary and strong civil societies are other ways to fight corruption.
Going further, she acknowledged that building a strong institution is not as easy, hence the need for national and international organisations to work together.

CrimeRe: Man Reveals Why He Slept With His 15-year-old Daughter. by ChroniclesNg(m): 5:00pm On Oct 22, 2018
[quote author=Stevensml post=72319872]The Isokoko Police Division, in Agege area of Lagos has arrested a 35-year-old man, identified as Michael Igbaniba, for allegedly sleeping with his 15-year-old daughter for two years.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP confirmed the arrest, adding that suspect was arrested after his teenage daughter, who could no longer bear the sexual abuse, reported the matter to the police on Sunday.

The unnamed victim, according to Vanguard, told the police that her father had her when he was 20 years old and out of wedlock.

She said, “He went to pick me from my mother after getting married to another woman without any child.

“My father started sleeping with me immediately I moved into the house, initially, he said he would stop paying my school fees if I refused to sleep with him or if I told anyone.

“I reluctantly allowed him because of my love for education until I could not bear it anymore and also because I was ashamed to reveal it to anybody because he is my father.”

The Police stated that during investigations, it was discovered that the 15-year-old was pregnant, but the pregnancy aborted with the assistance of her father.

According to the police, “She reported the issue of the abortion to her church Pastor but was stopped from going to church by her father.”

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to have been sleeping with his daughter.

He said, “I did it because I wanted more children. I was advised by friends to bring her to live with me and my wife, because of our inability to have a child since we got married.

“By the time she came to live with us, my wife did not get pregnant.

“The same friends advised I slept with my daughter that my wife would get pregnant in the process.”

The PPRO added that suspect was being interrogated at the Family Unit of Isokoko Division.

He said, “The Commissioner of Police has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.

“The suspect would be prosecuted if found culpable at the end of investigation, the teenager has been taken into protective custody."

As every Nigerian keep asking " how did Nnamdi Kanu get to Israel". Why did he finally surface after the Igbos have agreed to participate in next year General election.

Here is my view, Sentiment aside, given all that President Buhari have faced, does anyone in his party (APC) have the courage to say Buhari will win next year General Election.

I can boldly tell you "NO", I am suspecting the Presidency is now a co-conspirator in kidnapping fraud: I believe he is playing his wild cards. I mean I know buhari have teeth but I never knew he had claws.

The Nigerian Military kidnapped Nnamdi Kanu under the disguise of Python dance, then just weeks after PDP Presidential primary election, the Nigerian military decided to dump Nnamdi Kanu in Israel . What the presidency is trying to do is to set confusion into the minds of the Igbos and the PDP camp.

Those in power are trying to change the future of Igbo's and we must resist this temptation. Thank you.

CrimeRe: Pastor, his Junior Pastor & Church Member Murdered By Unknown Assailants In Abia by ChroniclesNg(m): 2:21pm On Oct 21, 2018
zoba88:
A Nigerian pastor, his junior pastor and a member of his church were murdered in cold blood at his residence by unknown assailants in Umuobia,Abia State.A johtwho visited the scene said...

'We arrived at the scene at the Umuobia Housing Estate, Olokoro to meet other colleague journalists and a team of police officers led by the DCP in charge of the state CID.

The gate of the compound where the incident had taken place was ajar with the atmosphere reeking of this heart stopping stench.

Moving into the compound was only a necessity. If not, no one ought to. This is because the corpses had been there since last Saturday, October 13 and were only discovered yesterday's evening when the police were alerted after a long search for the victims by their families and friends. So, the police only moved in today.

Entering the house, we saw three corpses of two males and a female. One of the male corpses, we were told by a pastor close to one of the deceaseds, was that of the owner of the house and senior pastor of 'Winds of Glory Church', Ohokobe Ndume, Pastor Blessed Kelechukwu Iwuanyanwu who was about 27 years of age.

The other was that of the junior pastor whose name was given as Ambassador Kalu Ikeagwu and was aged 25. The female, Ruth Andrew, we were told was a former women leader of the church and was about 40 years of age and had divorced her husband.

This is contrary to a Facebook update which suggested that the senior pastor had disappeared after the corpse of "his married girlfriend and two others were found in his house".

The three corpses lay separately with Ruth's body lying in the last room which seemingly was the 'Master's bedroom' with noticeable machete-like cuts on the body and severed fingers. That of the junior pastor lay on the passage with the entrails already out in the open. The senior pastor lay in a room adjoining the passage with deep cuts.

The rooms were in disarray with traces of blood flow and splash on both the floors and on the walls - suggesting a thorough struggle for life by the victims which unfortunately did not yield fruit. This also points to a possibility that the murder may not have been carried out by one individual.

We also found out that the man's SUV and that of the woman who we learnt owned a school, were missing alongside the power generator, television, fan and some other appliances. They were apparently loaded in the vehicles and moved away by the assailants.

Some of the residents of the neighbourhood who reluctantly spoke off camera said they could not dictate the crime due to the high level of noise that was emanating from the compound.

Meanwhile, a youngman who identified himself as Pastor Joseph Smart, a friend of the junior pastor said they started looking for his friend when his family could not find him after he and his boss were unprecedentedly absent from church service on Sunday.

On the part of the junior pastor's girlfriend (that how she was addressed), she saw her friend for the last time on Saturday evening when he told her he wanted to go pass the night at the senior pastor's house from where he intended to attend church service the next day being Sunday. She said she tried to dissuade him from going but to no avail and that was the last time she saw him.

An account from his sister however said that upon sensing danger, they called the main pastor's number and a voice answered and assured them that her brother was safe and that there was a poor network service where they had gone for a crusade in a remote village hence he could not be reached. Apparently, the mastermind was making use of the deceased's phone and was impersonating the owner.

Though the police have begun investigation, the death of the three remains a mystery'

CrimeRe: Huddersfield Rape Gang Jailed For 221 Years For Abusing 15 Girls. (photos) by ChroniclesNg(m): 11:34am On Oct 21, 2018
nairafame:
A gang of men who embarked on a ‘campaign of rape and other sexual abuse’ against vulnerable teenage girls in Huddersfield has been given lengthy jail sentences, it can now be reported.

Ringleader Amere Singh Dhaliwal, 35, was jailed for life earlier this year and told he must serve a minimum of 18 years in prison by a judge who said: ‘Your treatment of these girls was inhuman.’

Dhaliwal is one of 20 men who have been found guilty of scores of offences in a series of trials at Leeds Crown Court.

Fifteen women told juries what happened to them between 2004 and 2011 when they were aged between 11 and 17.

Those already sentenced have received prison terms totalling 221 years.

The series of three trials has been subject to a blanket reporting ban which was partially lifted on Friday.

It was towards the end of the second of these trials, in May, that English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson was arrested as he reported about the case live on Facebook from outside the court.

Robinson was jailed for contempt of court but his conviction was later quashed and the case is due to be heard again at the Old Bailey next week.

Dhaliwal, who has children of his own, was convicted of 54 separate counts, including 22 rapes, involving 11 girls.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told him earlier this year: ‘You treated them as commodities to be passed around for your own sexual gratification and the gratification of others.

‘The extent and gravity of your offending far exceeds anything which I have previously encountered.

‘It was a very significant campaign of rape and other sexual abuse.

‘Children’s lives have been ruined and families profoundly affected by seeing their children, over months and years, out of control, having been groomed by you and other members of your gang.’

The girls, who are now all adults, told the juries how they believed they were being shown genuine affection and attention as they were groomed in Huddersfield.

But Judge Marson told the men this was ‘deliberately created to enable predatory men such as you to perpetrate gross sexual abuse for your own perverted gratification’.

According to the judge, one of the girls said: ‘They got your trust and then stuff would start happening to you and it’s just one of those things that you couldn’t get out of, it just happened.

‘My mum and dad’s houses got trashed, their cars got trashed. I was constantly getting raped, beaten up.’

The judge noted that at least one girl attempted suicide.

One of the girls was seen being thrown out of a moving car outside her home. She had bruises all over her face and was under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Judge Marson said at the end of the first trial: ‘The way you treated these girls defies understanding; this abuse was vile and wicked.

‘As cases of sexual abuse with which the courts have to deal, this case comes at the top of the scale. None of you has expressed any remorse for what you did.’

He added: ‘The sentences I pass on you are severe and are intended to be so. They are intended to deter others from behaving in this way.’

Dhaliwal, of Holly Road, Huddersfield, was jailed in June along with seven other men, who received jail sentences of between eight and 18 years.

After the second trial, which also ended in June, eight more men were given jail sentences of between five and 18 years.

Four more men were found guilty of a range of offences earlier this month following the third trial and will be sentenced on November 1.

The men referred to each other using a series of nicknames which were also used as their monikers during the trials.

They included ‘Beastie’, ‘Dracula’ and ‘Nurse’.

The pattern of large-scale exploitation of mainly white girls by groups of men of mainly Pakistani heritage uncovered by West Yorkshire Police in Huddersfield mirrors what has happened in a number of other towns including Rotherham, Rochdale and Telford.

The restriction which banned reporting of the Huddersfield trials was lifted by the Recorder of Leeds Judge Guy Kearl QC following representations by a number of media organisations, including the Press Association.
