Politics / Central Bank Of Nigeria Finally Signed The Currency_swap_deal With China✍️ by chronology(f): 3:32pm On Sep 01, 2021
BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!....

CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA FINALLY SIGNED THE CURRENCY_SWAP_DEAL WITH CHINA✍️.

The CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (CBN) have finally signed the currency swap deal we have been expecting for the past 2 years into existence with the Chinese Government.

The importance of this is that since almost 70% of the goods we import come from #China and #Asia and 12% #America why must we use Dollars to transact with China? from now instead of using dollars at N500 to 1dollar to import those goods, we can now buy #Yuan at 47 naira to 1 Yuan and import those stuffs directly.

INSTEAD OF BUYING THESE GOODS IN DOLLARS IN CHINA, WE WILL NOW BUY THEM IN YUAN WHICH IS 5TIMES CHEAPER DOLLARS.....

As usual, another giant stride which Print Media, Electronic Media and Nigerian looters will not report or allow you to understand this victory over supremacy of dollars in our daily lives and economic activities.

Up coming reality is that from tomorrow, try to monitor exchange rate. Some of those guys who hoarded foreign currencies to make gains will off load them in order not to have heart attack over their huge loss arising from the currency swap deal with china.
Dollars and pounds will flood everywhere with no buyers, as the buyers will draw naira from their accounts in banks with presence in China.

MANY NIGERIAN BANKS WILL BE SEEKING TO HAVE THEIR REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE IN CHINA LIKE FIRST BANK SAW TO THE FUTURE AND ALREADY HAVE OFFICE IN CHINA...
INFLATION WILL GO DOWN DRASTICALLY BECAUSE OF THE PRICE OF COMMODITIES

Politics / Press Statement On Icpc Recruitment by chronology(f): 4:47pm On Aug 27, 2021
The general public will recall that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) commenced a recruitment process early 2020. For a recruitment approval for less than 200 officers, the Commission received almost 400,000 applications from Nigerians. Subsequent to COVID-19 pandemic, government suspended the process.

In mid 2021, the Commission obtained approval to complete the process. In order to give every applicant a fair chance and at the same time get the best, ICPC decided to apply online tests to prune down the number of applicants, using international best practices.

Through the service of a recruitment consultant, the Commission has so far conducted a number of rounds of on-line tests, including some repeat tests to accommodate numerous complaints of non-receipt of notification of tests emails, spam of notification emails, complaints of timing-out of test portal, non-submission of fully completed or half completed tests, loss of access to registered email address of applicants, forgotten passwords, and so on. Applicants with further complaints are advised to forward them to complaints@dcsl.com.ng

The Commission at extra cost decided to notify applicants by SMS of the dates of tests and advisory that they should check their mails and spam folders for the test email.

Following this step, only successful applicants - including those with specialized skills that are shortlisted will be further invited for follow up tests, which may be virtual or physical with effect from September, 2021.

The pruning down process will continue until the Commission arrives at a manageable number of qualified applicants that may be further processed by one on one interviews, certificate verification, health certification, character profiling and other assessments befitting of a law enforcement agency.

Applicants and the general public are therefore advised to bear with the Commission in this process.

Please note that the entire process is at no cost to applicants and the general public. Kindly report all requests for money or promises of facilitation to the Commission through info@icpc.gov.ng or call ICPC on toll free line number 0800 2255 4272 or 0803-123-0280, 0803-123-0281, 0705-699-0190 and 0705-699-0191.

Politics / FG Raises N1.92trn Bonds In 7 Months by chronology(f): 9:28pm On Aug 25, 2021
The federal government through the Debt Management Office (DMO) has raised N1.923 trillion from bond auctions since the beginning of the year. The funds was raised through the FGN bonds and the FGN Savings Bonds meant for retail investors.

The debt office had raised N1.917 trillion from the FGN bond auctions and another N6.66 billion through the FGN Savings Bond in the eight-month period.

Investors had staked the highest in June with a total subscription of N417.48 billion to the 10, 20 and 30-year FGN bonds. The DMO allotted N325.8 billion through the 16.2884 per cent 10-year bond, 12.50 per cent 20-year paper and 12.98 per cent 30-year paper. It had also raised N4.5 billion through non-competitive allotment.

Subscription dropped in July to N286.11 billion as investors bid at higher rates, while N138.07 billion had been allocated. Another N103.9 billion was also raised through the non-competitive allotment. In August, subscriptions had risen to N414.07 billion of which only N260.09 billion was allocated for the 13.98 per cent 10 year paper, 12.4 per cent 20-year paper and 12.98 per cent 30-year paper.

Last week, trading in the Treasury bonds secondary market also closed on a bullish note, as investors sought to fill lost bids from previous bond auction. Specifically, the average yield declined by 17bps to 11.4 per cent. Across the benchmark curve, the average yield declined at the short (-5bps), mid (-41bps) and long (-7bps) ends following demand for the MAR-2024 (-39bps), MAR-2027 (-77bps) and MAR-2036 (-21bps) bonds, respectively.

At the bond auction, the DMO offered instruments worth N150 billion to investors through re-openings of the 13.9800 per cent FGN FEB 2028 (Bid-to-offer: 1.55x; Stop rate: 11.60 per cent, previously: 12.35 per cent), 12.4000 per cent MAR 2036 (Bid-to-offer: 2.10x; Stop rate: 12.75 per cent, previously: 13.15 per cent) and 12.9800 per cent FGN MAR 2050 (Bid-to-offer: 3.55x; Stop rate: 12.80 per cent, previously: 13.25 per cent) bonds.

As expected, demand was higher (subscription: N360.02 billion; bid-to-offer: 2.4x) than July’s auction (Subscription: N286.11 billion; Bid-to-offer: 1.9x). The DMO eventually over-allotted instruments worth N260.09 billion, resulting in a bid-to-cover ratio of 1.4x.

Analysts say they lower yields given expectations of limited supply and deliberate efforts by the DMO to reduce domestic borrowing costs for the government.

Meanwhile, at the Treasury Bills Market, analysts say they expect quiet trading as the Central Bank of Nigeria is set to roll over N157.20 billion worth of maturities to market participants at its bi-weekly PMA.

“Afterwards, we envisage the trend of lower yields on T-bills to continue as market participants take positions due to expectations of further decline in auction stop rates amidst the CBN’s continued absence from the OMO primary market,” analysts at Cordros Research stated in an emailed note.

Foreign Affairs / Zambia President Hakainde Hichilema: No-one Should Go To Bed Hungry by chronology(f): 7:38am On Aug 25, 2021
Zambia's new President Hakainde Hichilema has said in his inauguration speech that his government will ensure that citizens can have three decent meals a day.

"No Zambian should go to bed hungry," Hakainde Hichilema told a packed stadium in the capital, Lusaka.

He also said his government would focus on reviving the economy and creating jobs for the unemployed youth.

Mr Hichilema beat incumbent Edgar Lungu in a landslide victory 12 days ago.

It was the sixth time the former businessman had run for president.

The 59-year-old's victory has raised the hopes of his former opposition counterparts in other African states that they too can overcome state repression and one day rise to power.

'Zero tolerance to corruption'

He added that the country was facing a lot of challenges but his government would work to revive the economy, which he said had been "overwhelmed by debt servicing, emoluments and consumption" leaving little room for investment for growth.

"We will pay special attention to lowering the fiscal deficit, reducing public debt and restoring social and market confidence," he said.

"To the jobless youths, a new dawn is here where you will be skilled and find opportunity to work or do business in an economy that we will revive," he said.

Mr Hichilema said that there would be "zero tolerance for corruption", vowing to fight "the scourge" professionally and not be vindictive.

He added that his government would work to deal with the high cost of living to ensure food is available and affordable.

Hinting at the mistreatment meted against him by the outgoing president, he said "it was a new dawn", adding "time has come for all Zambians to be truly free".

He said the media should work freely without fear, and that his cabinet would be inclusive because he believes "diversity is a strength".

Afterwards, President Hichilema released hundreds of balloons into the sky over Heroes Stadium - a change from last inauguration when doves were used and proved problematic when they refused to fly off.

Foreign Affairs / US House Approves Biden's $3.5tn Domestic Budget Blueprint by chronology(f): 7:27am On Aug 25, 2021
The US Congress has approved a $3.5tn (£2.54tn) budget blueprint, setting the stage for Democrats to enact President Joe Biden's ambitious economic agenda.

The rule that passed on Tuesday allows Democrats, who narrowly control both chambers, to move ahead with key policy proposals.

Mr Biden's party hopes to devote significant resources to family support, health and climate schemes.

It passed the House of Representatives 220-212, with no Republican support.

The resolution's fate was unclear as late as Tuesday morning, amid a standoff between progressive and centrist House Democrats.

The Democrats are enacting a process called budget reconciliation to approve Mr Biden's larger spending package - and passage of the budget blueprint Tuesday is the first step.

A group of 10 moderate Democratic lawmakers had threatened to withhold votes on the blueprint unless the House first approved a $1tn bipartisan infrastructure bill. That package includes funding for roads, bridges, the power grid, public transport and internet.

To win a compromise after over 24 hours of debate, top House Democrats have assured moderates that the infrastructure bill will be discussed on 27 September, when the House is back in session.

"Passing this rule paves the way for the Building Back Better plan, which will forge legislative progress unseen in 50 years," Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said ahead of the vote.

The top Democrat added that delays only threaten the economic plan and other bills.

Mr Biden's Build Back Better domestic plan is aimed at creating jobs and lowering costs for working families. It is largely financed with tax increases on the rich and large corporations.

Since June, Mrs Pelosi had said that that far-reaching $3.5tn infrastructure plan must move forward before the infrastructure deal.

More liberal party members said they would not support the infrastructure bill unless it was coupled with the larger economic package, which contains their key legislative priorities, like childcare programmes and taxes on the wealthy.

But the centrists demanded a vote on infrastructure first, and accused other Democrats of attempting to hold the infrastructure bill hostage.

On Monday night, the internal party debate reportedly led to a tense meeting among the Democrats. Politico reported that Mrs Pelosi told lawmakers they shouldn't "squander" the opportunity to pass the bills while Democrats hold a narrow majority in the House.

Mrs Pelosi has set a goal of passing both pieces of legislation by 1 Oct.

Foreign Affairs / Afghanistan: Taliban Tell Working Women To Stay At Home by chronology(f): 6:23pm On Aug 24, 2021
Working women in Afghanistan must stay at home until proper systems are in place to ensure their safety, a Taliban spokesman has told reporters.

"It's a very temporary procedure," spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

The Taliban, which enforced a strict version of Islamic law when they ran Afghanistan before 2001, retook full control of the country nine days ago.

The UN has highlighted "credible" reports of abuses by the Taliban, notably restrictions on women.

UN Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet said on Tuesday that women's rights were a "fundamental red line".

In his news conference in Kabul on Tuesday, the Taliban spokesman also addressed the US-led evacuation from the capital, Kabul.

Afghans should not try to go to the airport, Mr Mujahid said, citing the chaotic situation there
The US should stop "encouraging" them to leave as Afghanistan needs their talents, he added
The UK, France and Germany have called for an extension to the 31 August deadline set by the US to leave Afghanistan
However UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has admitted that President Joe Biden is unlikely to extend the deadline.
US troops control Kabul airport from where some 58,700 people have been evacuated so far. Mr Mujahid reaffirmed the Taliban's position that the operation should end by 31 August.

On the situation of Afghan women, he said that any restrictions would be short-lived.

"Our security forces are not trained (in) how to deal with women - how to speak to women (for) some of them," Mr Mujahid said. "Until we have full security in place... we ask women to stay home."

As well as expressing concern over women's rights, Ms Bachelet also said she had received reports of the recruitment of child soldiers and summary executions by the Taliban.

She was speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Afterwards, the council endorsed a resolution affirming its "unwavering commitment" to the rights of women and girls.

But the resolution fell short of what many human rights groups had called for - in particular, it did not recommend the appointment of a special UN investigator for Afghanistan.

Since their return to power, the militants have tried to convey a more restrained image, promising rights for women and girls and some freedom of speech.

President Biden is holding talks with leaders of the other G7 leading industrial countries on Tuesday.

Thousands of people including British citizens, other foreign nationals and Afghans eligible for resettlement abroad are still waiting to get out.

Khalid, an Afghan who worked as an interpreter for the British Army, told the BBC about his relief - tinged with sadness - at leaving the country. He and his family are now in the north of England.

"When you leave your country, your people, especially your sister, your brothers, your mother, your everyone… because of those things I was sad, but now I am happy in the UK," he said.

Even before the Taliban retook control, more than 550,000 people had been forced to flee their homes this year due to fighting, according to the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.

If confirmed, it would be the highest-level meeting so far between the US and the Taliban since the fall of Kabul and the removal of the US-backed government.

Business / Airbnb Offers Free Accommodation For 20,000 Afghan Refugees by chronology(f): 5:51pm On Aug 24, 2021
Online accommodation platform Airbnb has said it will house 20,000 Afghan refugees at no charge to help them resettle across the world.

The company's boss said the move was in response to "one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time".

He said the firm felt a responsibility to step up.

Chief executive Brian Chesky added: "I hope this inspires other business leaders to do the same. There's no time to waste."

"As tens of thousands of Afghan refugees resettle around the world, where they stay will be the first chapter in their new lives. For these 20,000 refugees, my hope is that the Airbnb community will provide them with not only a safe place to rest and start over, but also a warm welcome home." he said.

The offer starts immediately and the company said it was working with non-governmental organisations "on the ground" to help with the most pressing needs.

It said it would collaborate with resettlement agencies and partners "to go where the need goes" and evolve the initiative and its support as necessary.

He said: "The displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the US and elsewhere is one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time."

Airbnb said it would release more details soon about how people might help.

The company said: "We know that Airbnb hosts and guests around the world will be eager to stand up and assist this massive effort - and in the coming days, Airbnb and Airbnb.org plan to share details on how hosts and the broader community can support this initiative."

People in crisis
Property owners who host Airbnb locations have long been encouraged to donate stays at their homes for "people in crisis".

The scheme began in response to Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when more than 1,000 people needed emergency accommodation after New York city was hit.

Since then, it claims to have helped more than 75,000 people.

The company launched its Open Homes initiative in 2017 to allow its host community to offer their homes for free to people hit by disasters or fleeing conflict.

The initiative has since offered free stays to people affected by the Mexico City earthquake, Californian wildfires, Australian bushfires and other disasters.

It also led to the company setting up its own independent non-profit, Airbnb.org, to focus on helping people share housing and resources with each other in times of crisis.

Last week, it gave emergency funding and support to the International Rescue Committee, HIAS and Church World Service to provide temporary stays for up to 1,000 arriving Afghan refugees.

During the last weekend, it placed 165 refugees in safe housing shortly after touching down in the US.

"Accessible housing is urgently needed and essential," said David Miliband, president of the International Rescue Committee.

As long as the business continued to boom despite the economy challenges, we shareholders expected them to continue to pay interim and final dividend every year.”
Programming / Facebook Includes Nigeria, Others In Its Undersea Cable. by chronology(f): 8:10am On Aug 19, 2021
Locial media giant, Facebook Inc. and some of the world’s largest telecoms carriers, China Mobile Limited and MTN Group Limited, are set to build a wider-than-earlier planned giant sub-sea cable in Nigeria and other parts of Africa

On inauguration, the subsea cable will join five other international submarine cables, with over 40 terabyte per seconds (Tbps) of capacity, including SAT3 cable, MainOne cable, Glo1 cable, ACE cable and WACS cable, landed by Natcom, MainOne, Globacom, Dolphin Telecom and MTN.

Already, capacities of these submarine cables are under utilised as about 30 per cent of total capacity is currently in use. A group, Association of Cable operators of Nigeria (ASCON) two years ago, said less than 10 per cent of the five cables is in use.

The companies plan to add the Indian Ocean island countries of Seychelles and Comoros, as well as Angola and a new connection to Nigeria, the company said yesterday.

This is in addition to a recently announced link to the Canary Islands and would bring connection-landings to 35 in 26 countries.

“The significant investment by Facebook in 2Africa builds on several other investments we have made in the continent, including infrastructure investments in South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” a Facebook spokesperson said via email.

The undersea cable sector is experiencing a resurgence, with Facebook and Alphabet Inc.’s Google behind about 80 per cent of recent investments in transatlantic links. The tech giants are seeking to tap growing demand for fast-data transfers used for everything from streaming movies to social messaging and telemedicine. During the 1990s dot-com boom, phone companies spent more than $20 billion laying fiber-optic lines under the oceans.

The project is part of Facebook’s long-held plans to lead the race to provide more reliable and faster internet in Africa, a continent of more than 1.2 billion people with an increasing up take of smartphones. The U.S. social-media giant first announced plans for a new undersea cable in May 2020. That followed attempts to launch a satellite in 2016 to beam signal around the continent — but the SpaceX rocket carrying the technology blew up.

2Africa, set to be one of the largest subsea cable project in the world, will cost just under $1 billion, Bloomberg reported last May, citing people familiar with the matter. Manufacturing of the first segments of the infrastructure has started in the U.S., according to the statement. Nokia Oyj’ Alcatel Submarine Networks was picked to build the cable.

The marine surveys for the new sections of the cable will probably be completed by the end of the year, according to the companies. The 37,000-kilometer (23,000 miles) long cable will connect Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

2Africa is expected to come into operation by 2024 and will deliver more than the combined capacity of all sub-sea cables that are currently serving Africa, according to the statement. Other project partners include Telecom Egypt Co, the U.K.’s Vodafone Group Plc and Paris-based Orange SA.

Oraka-Onojeje, he said, has the requisite experience for her new role after graduating from United States Naval War College in 2020.

On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I congratulate a fine military officer and pride of Delta, Cdr. Hetty Oraka-Onojeje, on her promotion as a commander in the US Navy.

“Over the years, Oraka-Onojeje has, by dint of hard work and discipline, established herself as a team player, which has endeared her to various shipmates in the US Navy.

“As you assume your new role as commander in the United States Navy, your family and indeed, your colleagues in the military and admirers, have cause to be grateful to God for having granted you a life of great accomplishments.

We are proud of you and we know that you will continue to be a great ambassador of our great state and nation, and like your people, we will continue to pray for you for good health and greater attainments,” Okowa said.

The church will soon be empty if it fails in its duty – Pastor Tunde Bakare

The Serving Overseer, The Citadel Global Community Church (formerly The Latter Rain Assembly), and one-time presidential candidate in Nigeria, Pastor Tunde Bakare, brought fire to the hour-long conversation on The Future of Faith with Chude Jideonwo, founder of Joy, Inc., discussing governance, and the responsibility of the church during these times.

Speaking about his presidential ambitions, Pastor Tunde Bakare mentioned that in the 2011 elections he was “pressured to run with Atiku.” Nonetheless, God’s counsel to him has remained the same – his political career is not over, he will be called upon for more responsibilities and he is obligated to show up.

Pastor Bakare extolled the virtue of rising up to one’s responsibilities, referencing the church as a body that is required in these trying times to show up for its members.

“The church, which is you and I and the millions of Christians in this country, has one duty; to nourish the body of Christ, honor and serve it. That is you and I.”

"If the church does not do its duty, it will soon be empty and cockroaches and spiders will take over,” Bakare said.

The conversation also touched on gender, the state of violence against women, and the increase in questions about the role of religion in the continued subjugation of women, which is inarguably related to how women continue to meet violence at the hands of men.

Education / LASU Lecturer Booted For Manipulating Students’ Results by chronology(f): 7:06am On Aug 18, 2021
The National Industrial Court (NIC) in Lagos, presided by Justice Nelson Ogbuanya has dismissed the suit filed by a former lecturer of the Lagos State University (LASU), Dr. Scholastica Ebarefimia Udegbe.

Udegbe had filed a suit to challenge her dismissal from the institution.

Udegbe, a one-time acting head of marketing department, was dismissed by the LASU Governing Council of the University in 2017, for gross misconduct, bordering on the alteration of students’ results.

The claimant, prior to her dismissal, was appointed in 2001 as lecturer 1 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2012.

Guardian reports that her promotion was reversed in 2016 on grounds of alleged non-compliance with the advertised requirement.
Following the demotion, she sued LASU in the suit marked NICN/LA/685/16, challenging the action.

While the case for her demotion was still in court, she was queried for allegedly altering results of students and subsequently faced a disciplinary panel, which indicted her and recommended that she should be suspended for three months without pay, as well as barred from holding any administrative post in the University for three years.

However, the LASU governing council in its consideration of the panel report instead dismissed her from the University for gross misconduct bordering on alteration of results.

Angered by the dismal, which she said, was not part of the recommendations of the disciplinary panel and did not follow due process, she approached the NIC, praying the court to declare that the purported dismissal was illegal, null and void.

She sued LASU as the 1st defendant, while the governing council was named the 2nd defendant in the suit filed and argued on her behalf by her counsel J. Kadiri.

The former lecturer asked the court to declare that her appointment with the 1st defendant subsists, same having not been properly determined.

She also prayed the court to make an order, mandating the defendants to reinstate her employment with all her salaries and entitlements from September 2017 when she was “dismissed unlawfully” till judgment is delivered with interest at 21 per cent yearly.

She also asked for the sum of N50 million as general damages for unlawful dismissal, among others.

However, counsel to the defendants, Mr. Norrison Quakers (SAN), argued that the 2nd defendant, as the final authority of the 1st defendant’s University can take decision to dismiss the claimant as the appropriate disciplinary measure, having established the alleged infraction against the claimant, which is tantamount to gross misconduct and attracts punishment of dismissal.

He urged the court to dismiss the suit and uphold the claimant’s dismissal from the service of LASU.

But in his considered decision on July 29, 2021, Justice Ogbuanya dismissed the suit and held that the dismissal was valid.

He said: “The said recommendation of suspension and administrative sanctions is perverse, and is hereby set aside. I so hold. On final analysis, I have come to an irresistible view, that the 2nd defendant, (the Governing Council), acting as the final authority, rightly and validly took the decision to enter a dismissal as against suspension and other administrative sanctions recommended by the Joint Senate/Council Disciplinary (Academic) Committee in respect of the claimant’s infraction bordering on alteration of students’ results, which amounts to gross misconduct, punishable by dismissal, in line with extant law and condition of service guiding their employment relationship.

“The said dismissal of the claimant is hereby upheld. In this circumstance, I find no merit in this suit. Same is hereby dismissed in its entirety along with the reliefs thereto, since success of the reliefs sought depends on the favourable outcome of the legal issues underpinning the dispute. I so hold.”

The judge, who berated the University for not reversing the manipulated scores unlawfully awarded to the benefitted students as recommended by the Council, ordered the University to do so.

“The Results/Certificates of the affected students should be re-called for re-computation and re-issue to reflect the correct Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and Class of Degree.

“Compliance shall be published in a National Newspaper within two months of this Judgment, and the defendants’ counsel shall file evidence of such compliance in the case file. I so hold and order. Judgment is entered accordingly and I make no order as to cost,” he held.

Education / Story Of Yoruba Woman Who Led A Revolution In 1844 To Free Slaves In Cuba by chronology(f): 2:14pm On Dec 22, 2020
The 1800s was an exciting and busy period in the Americas and Europe, packed with valiant rebellion and revolts by black men and women all over the country. Slavery had been abolished at that stage of history but was nevertheless practiced in many parts of America and Europe. In their need for liberation from the cruel treatments on the Caribbean farm, black men and women who were descendants of Africans brought into captivity and slavery were getting bolder. The Caribbean and America were where at the hands of slave masters and plantation supervisors, Africans struggled most. Yet no matter how hard the white slaves wanted to destroy the will of the Black people, they struck back with the resilient Black spirit. "And it shocked the white enslavers every time there was a revolt, reminding them that the heart of the Africans was as hard as the back of a thousand-year-old Iroko tree.

More and more Africans continued to rebel as the years went on. While in some instances their leaders were captured and executed, in general, the captive Africans were violently awakened. It was in that unflinching call for liberty that Carlota Lucumi's legend and accomplishments were born. Carlota was still a slave as of 1843 and was still working and enslaved at sugar plantations in Mantazas, Cuba, renamed Triunvirato, in memory of Carlota's revolt. Her rank had improved among the enslaved Africans at that point, and so she had some influence in the slave society. Thus, she and five other slaves had intended to rebel against their owners for months.

Her counterparts were Firmina (a woman), Eduardo, Narciso, Filipe Lucumi, and Manuel Ganga. They stroke on November 5, 1843, setting many houses on fire on their farm, including the house used to execute slaves. The Mayor and Julian Luis Alfonso, who was the plantation's primary owner, were targeted. Carlota's story of courage and rebellion spread like flames all over Cuba. And in its aftermath, over five plantations had their slaves rising and murdering as many as they could locate white enslavers. They were starving for democracy, and through coercion they took it. In the fighting, Carlota was so fierce that she celebrated her revolution's victory by striking down an overseer's daughter with her machete. The daughter of the overseer was named María de Regla.

The war raged on and white troops arrested her and tortured her. They bound her horses to her body causing them to pull her until she died. On the morning of November 6, 1943, when her supporters found her body on the Triunvirato farm, they were angry and violently rioted, stormed the estate, and killed as many whites as they saw. The revolt will come to an end, with their overwhelming firepower, when the White troops defeated the Blacks.

After Carlota's death, the rebellion ended, but its legacy continued and was the key inspiration for the Cuban struggle for independence. Her uprising brought a harsh shock to the heart of Cuba's white society. To this day for her role in leading one of the greatest revolts during slavery, Carlota is a major factor in Cuban history. At the age of 10, she was abducted from the Kingdom of Benin, where she was born and sold into slavery. One would think that the cruel reality of slavery would have shattered a 10-year-old girl's resilient African heart, but it didn't. She wanted liberation from that tender period. And she ended up as a formidable liberator and warrior.Lucumi's last name derives from her ethnic group, the Lucumi people, who are Afro-Brazilians, descending from the present-day Yoruba of Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. Like the Maroons, their tribe was greatly hated in Cuba. They became famous for leading revolts and setting up their own colonies.

Crime / Borno Massacre: Army Reveals How Boko Haram Deceived Farmers by chronology(f): 3:12pm On Nov 30, 2020
According to dailyPost

Nigerian Army on Tuesday, disclosed that the 43 farmers killed on Saturday at Zambamari were in close contacts with the Boko Haram terrorists without informing the Nigerian authorities.

The Defence Spokesperson, Major General John Eneche on Monday while speaking on Sunrise Daily on Channels TV said the insurgents deceived the farmers that they will be preaching to them.

Eneche also disclosed that Boko Haram informants are informing the insurgents about the movement of the army, while other citizens in the area are refusing to give information to the army.

One of the presenters stated during the programme, “One of the survivals said they have been in contact with these terrorists, in fact, they will tell them to help them carry load, and they will do that, apparently these terrorist were among them.”

The General responded, “We cannot force people to bring out statement. Even this one, they deceived them that they are preaching to them, and that has been the main problem. We are going to overcome this.

“It’s like cornering the people. First, they said we are going to preach to them, deceived them. Like the person that commented on the issue, they did not even hear gunshot, it’s like cornering them.

“That has been our worries, it is a concern for us. For instance, just like it has been said, we believe strongly that you need a guide, you need a lead. Would they tell us? That is the question we have to ask. Yes sometimes, and most times no. That is the issue we are trying to confirm.

Look at another situation, our patrol will pass through a place, by the time you are going, some people will be looking at you, when you are coming back, you will meet an IED planted on the road, and people saw them, they won’t tell us.”

He also disputed the figure by the United Nations on the number of persons that died. Noting that contrary to the report by the UN that over 100 people reportedly died, the Army has so far counted 43.

“The military assisted in the counting. Some people ran to the bush, and are trickling back into the villages. They are still counting,” Eneche said.

Culture / Unforgettable Wars In Yoruba Land 2 by chronology(f): 10:28pm On Nov 27, 2020
War in yoruba land can't be easily forgotten because of the tactics the warlords deployed in the war.The Unforgettable wars include battle between ijaiye and ibadan, osogbo war, kiriji war and many more. I have published articles on osogbo and kiriji wars and the next is ijaiye-ibadan war and british-ijebu war

THE IBADAN-IJAYE WAR (1861-1862)
Ijaye was founded about the same time as Ibadan, by refugees from the Ikoyi area, led by Kurunmi, greatest soldier of his age’. It became an important communications centre, and under strong leadership it prospered. By this time, Ijaye probably had a population of 40,000 or more. Initially, relations with Ibadan were good, but rivalry between the two gradually developed. An issue for a final confrontation was provided by the death of Alafin Atiba in 1859. He was succeeded by the Aremo Adelu, and Kurunmi refused to recognise the succession because as at then, there was no Oba, and chiefships were not hereditary. The chiefs were organised into four lines: the civil chiefs, led by the Bale; the military chiefs in two lines, headed by the Balogun and the Seriki; and the women chiefs led by the Iyalode. Within each of these lines the titles were ranked, and each chief moved up a rank as those above him died or were killed in battle. The bottom ranks were filled by magaji, the elected leaders of the Ibadan descent groups. The most senior title, that of Bale, was usually filled by a Balogun who had proved himself in war. Ijaye and Oyo were already at loggerheads over the control of the Upper Ogun towns around Saki. In any case, Ibadan sided with the new Alafin and war broke out.

The war was fought in the forest between Ibadan and Ijaye. The Egbas joined the war on the side of Ijaye in order to prevent Ibadan form becoming a colossus in Yorubaland. The Ijebus also joined the Ijaye side in order to foil Ibadan’s attempt of creating enmity between them and Remo in order to secure a route to the coast. Later on, the Fulanis also joined the Ijaye to punish Ibadan from preventing them to spread Islam in Yorubaland.

The Ibadan army camped at Ilora, 13 miles north of Ijaye while the Ijaye forces, led by Ogunbonna of Abeokuta, camped at Olokemeji on the River Ogun. The Ijaye, Egba, Fulani and Ijebu forces set a blockade to cut Ibadan off from the supplies from the British in Lagos. Ibadan retaliated by blockading Ijaye from food supplies. The British merchants in Lagos lobbied the Remos of Sagamu and the Ikorodus to smuggle ammunition from Lagos to Ibadan. The support Ibadan received from the British made her brought the Ijayes on their knees in 1862 following Kurunmi’s death in 1851. The cause of his death is still unknown, but however, it is believed he committed suicide. Other towns supporting Ijaye retreated immediately. The Egbas were displeased with the actions of the Remos and Ikorodus and sought to punish them, but the British army prevented this by defeating the Egba army. The Egbas avenged this in 1867 by expelling all British missionaries in Egbaland and burned the printing house of Iwe Irohin, the first newspaper in Nigeria by Rev. Henry Townsend. The Ijebus also punished the British by not allowing any British nationals to enter Ijebuland. This was the foundation of the Battle of Imagbon (1892) also known as the 1892 Ijebu expedition.

Battle of Imagbon

In 1891, the Ijebu people, dwelling between 50 and 60 miles north-east of Lagos on the Magbon river, set a blockade on the trade route to Lagos which was then a crown colony, and charged customs dues as a source of revenue.

The Awujale (traditional ruler of Ijebu) closed down Ejirin market, cutting off Lagos from a source of up-country trade. The British government persuaded the Awujale several times to open the blockaded route but the Ijebu ruler remained adamant. However, in May 1891, a British acting governor together with some Hausa troops (mostly slaves who fled the North to South and were recruited by the British army) went to Ijebu kingdom to make an agreement with the Awujale and convince him to open the blockaded route and allowing the free passage of goods into Lagos.

The Awujale refused at first but after much persuasion and pressure, he agreed in January 1892 on the terms of receiving £500 annually as compensation for the loss of custom revenue.

However, the agreement didn’t last long. A white missionary was denied access to pass through the kingdom and was sent back. The British government were provoked by the action of the Ijebus and authorized the use of force on the kingdom. Britain gathered troops from Gold Coast (Ghana), Sierra Leone, Ibadan, and Lagos (the Hausa troops nearly 150).

On the 12th of May, 1892, the captain and his men, including some carriers, sailed up the Lagos Lagoon and landed at Ekpe. When they got to Leckie, another set of carriers (about 186 in numbers) were recruited.

On the Ijebu side, 8000 men with old rifles would be fighting the British. The British underestimated the fighting prowess of the Ijebus thus giving them some hard times in penetrating into the interiors of their kingdom.

The first day, the British army razed down four villages with some of their men sustaining fatal injuries. The next day, they proceeded to Atumba and gunned down the Ijebus with machine guns. Britain lost 12 men, a Briton and 12 Africans. Every Ijebu villages they came across was burnt to the ground. The Ijebus were really losing the battle but determined to prevent the British army from crossing the Yemoyi river.

The goddess of the Yemoyi river was said to have taken human sacrifice in order to prevent the intruders (British) from crossing. The river was dug deeper to make it impenetrable by all means for the British army. However, the British army managed to cross the sacred Yemoyi river and unleashed havoc on the Ijebus. They proceeded to the village of Imagbon.

The Ijebus had lost over 900 men while Britain lost only 56 men and have more than 30 wounded. The Ijebus were still determined to fight on but shortly afterwards, the Awujale surrendered and admitted losing the war.

Travel / Nigerian Travellers To The US Will Now Pay $15,000 Visa Bond According To Trump’ by chronology(f): 4:51pm On Nov 24, 2020
Nigerian visitors to the United States will have to pay up to $15,000 in bonds according to a new temporary policy issued to discourage nationals of some countries with higher visa overstay rate.

The President Donald Trump administration introduced the visa bond pilot programme on Monday for B-1 visas (for business travellers) and B-2 visas (for tourists) and it is expected to run for six months — December 24 to June 24, 2021.

The rule will see US consular officials ask travellers from affected countries to pay a refundable bond of $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000. About 15 African countries are said to be on the list.

The visa bond pilot programme by the US Department of State is said to target mostly African countries with high visa overstay — the visitors are believed to have entered the country legally on student, tourist, work visas and then stay past their visa expiration date.

The purpose of the pilot program is to assess the operational feasibility of posting, processing and discharging visa bonds, in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), to help assess the burden on government agencies and identify any practical challenges related to visa bonds,” the policy document read.

“The pilot program is designed to apply to nationals of specified countries with high overstay rates to serve as a diplomatic tool to encourage foreign governments to take all appropriate actions to ensure their nationals timely depart the United States after making temporary visits.

“The Pilot Program will run for six months. During that period, consular officers may require nonimmigrant visa applicants falling within the scope of the Pilot Program to post a bond in the amount of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000 as a condition of visa issuance.

“The amount of the bond, should a bond be appropriate, will be determined by the consular officer based on the circumstances of the visa applicant.”

According to data from the DHS, almost 30,000 Nigerians overstayed their B1/B2 visas in 2018, ranking as the 5th country with the most visa overstays in the US. This makes Nigeria the African country with the most visa overstays.

"Love is like a rock, easy to come by,hard to crack"
Love binds two souls together, today I came across a picture of a beautiful couple on social media, the picture was a wedding photo of two young couples alongside the picture they took together while in secondary school.

The picture drew a lot of attention from media users,as they could not help but congratulate the couple. But amidst all congratulatory messages, I drew a very important moral lesson from that picture, the lesson is not far from the test of time in relationships. Yes,gold and silver are tested in fire to make them look as attractive as they look,so too a good relationship should stand the test of time.

The couple above kept faithful to each other right from their secondary school days up to the moment they got married, but the question in today's relationships is can they stand the test of time? Can they still keep faithful and wait?

But anyways, the best thing to do is to always put our future spouses in prayers, that God in His infinite mercy would grant them the ability to wait for us as well as grant us that same grace to able to wait for ours, this is because, very few people are lucky to find their better halves early in life, and the above couple are a wonderful example.

To make sure that merchandise that go out to the marketplace are human safe, animals are regularly used to "test" the goods on.

Animal experiments are painful and merciless, and due to the chemical substances that a few products have, many animals even die a gradual and painful death.

Animal experiments take vicinity everywhere, each moment, each second.

But one organization is attempting to change all that, and does so in a arguable way. Some may say even disturbing.

Lush is a non-cruel beauty agency that checks its products on humans, just as different organizations do with animal experiments.

The experimental procedure was documented. And the lady who volunteered to be the experimental "human guinea pig" is 24-year-old Jacqueline Traide.

Jacqueline desired to show people what animals normally undergo. And the experiments on Jacqueline were not performed in a secret laboratory - they were carried out in the front of people on a busy road in London.

Jacqueline wore a body fit and was forcefully fed, got her head shaved, and she volunteered to do it all!

They opened her mouth tightly with two iron hooks and connected it to a strap that encircled her whole head

t's one issue to volunteer for it - however what type of man or woman could do this to another. For 10 hours, she was really tortured in the front of a live audience.

She was given injections, smeared with lotions and ointments, and got scratched and injured throughout her skin.

The lady said she hopes the torture she underwent will enhance people's attention of the torture that animals undergo in experimental labs and that she hopes people will think two times about the products they buy.
