The British Government on Friday deported no fewer than 120 Nigerians from the U.K. for various immigration offences, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. The deportees arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja in Lagos in the early hours of today. The deportees were airlifted back home aboard a chartered cargo aircraft that landed at the cargo section of the international airport. A reliable source told newsmen that the deportees were brought home in the early hours, so as not to draw undue attention from the public. The deportees, comprising mainly young men and women, narrated their unsavoury experiences, saying that they were brought back home unprepared by the British authorities. Many of them were said to have kept themselves busy, making telephone calls to their friends and relations on how to pick them at the airport. The source said that the deportees also made frantic efforts to move their luggage which were packed in `Ghana Must Go’ bags from the cargo wing of the airport to the airport's main gate, preparatory to finding their ways out of the airport. Some of the deportees were said to have expressed reservations over the way and manner they were brought home in a cargo aircraft. Scores of airport workers stopped by to interact with the deportees, as some of them narrated their ugly experiences and not knowing what exactly to fall back on, now that they had returned to a country they left many years ago. One of the deportees, a young lady, who declined to give her name said: "I am not interested in discussing why we were brought back home but my problem now is how to get out of this airport without drawing unusual attention. "I must, however, add that it is not a pleasant experience,’’ she added. Another deportee, a young man, lamented that they were sent home unprepared and wondered how he would be able to cope. A plot by the militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to extend its operations to the southern part of the country has been uncovered by security agencies. The sect had chosen some southern cities such as Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Onitsha and Warri for attacks. It was learnt that following sustained attacks on the sect’s strongholds in Borno and Yobe states by security agencies, its members had dispersed to other parts of the country. Security sources said that the group, which had carried out several devastating bombings and gun attacks in Kano that claim over 185 lives, was looking beyond the North in its future terror campaign. One of the reasons for spreading its operation to the South, it was learnt, was in order not to limit its campaign to an ethnic agenda. A top security source told PUNCH that there was likelihood that the Boko Haram might have some of their backers resident in the South. The source said that the mastermind of the Christmas Day bomb attack on St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto, was sighted in Lagos after the incident. It was learnt that security agencies were leaving no stone unturned in checking the moves of the arrested terror suspects and drawing probable inferences from them. SOKOTO The source said, “It was not a coincidence that Sokoto, who had been on the wanted list of the police before December 25, was sighted in Lagos. “His presence in Lagos was not for fun. This is one of the angles security agencies are working on. “I think the group has noticed that security is not tight in the South and there have not been bombings. They are out to cash in on the laxity.” The Senate Committee on Police, which probed the escape of Sokoto from custody, had last February said that the suspect was seen in Lagos on December 13. The committee chairman, Senator Paulinus Nwagu, had, while presenting the report of the probe said, “Police intelligence revealed that prior to his arrest on January 14, 2011, Kabiru Sokoto had been on the wanted list of security agencies. “Sokoto was reported to have been noticed within the vicinity of Snake Island, Lagos, and left Lagos sometime on December 13, 2011 and disappeared from surveillance monitoring until January 11, 2012. “He was later traced to Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory. “Police detectives traced him from Abaji to Abuja on the same date and further traced him to Asokoro-Abuja, where he was finally apprehended at about 0240 hours (2.40 am) on January 14, 2012, at the Borno State Governor’s Lodge at Iro Dan Musa Street, Asokoro, Abuja.” Intelligence report had revealed that Boko Haram sympathisers had moved to the South, from where they coordinated operations of the sect in the North. It was learnt that the sect decided to shift to the South in order to divert the attention of security agencies, who are on the trail of its members in the North. A security source stated, “Since the heat has been turned on them, they have been moving to Lagos and other cities, where they mix with unsuspecting northerners residing in those cities.” He said that the sect’s plot to attack the South was aimed at further creating the impression that there was instability in the country. The source said, “You will observe that activities of the sect are ebbing due to unrelenting efforts of security agencies. “But Boko Haram is also devising another method. This time around, it is looking at ways of attacking the South.” He, however, lamented that security agencies would have recorded more successes, if not for pro-Boko Haram elements in the Presidency. According to him, some people, who are sympathetic to the Boko Haram cause, are frustrating security agencies’ plans to “deal a final blow on the sect.” President Goodluck Jonathan on January 8 had said that the sect had infiltrated his government. He had said, “Some of them are in the executive arm of government, some of them are in the parliamentary/legislative arm of government while some of them are even in the judiciary. “Some are also in the armed forces, the police and other security agencies. Some continue to dip their hands and eat with you and you won’t even know the person who will point a gun at you or plant a bomb behind your house.” When contacted, the police on Friday denied knowledge of any moves by the Islamic sect to spread its mayhem to the South. The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olusola Amore, said he was not aware of such a move and did not say anything further. But a top security source said that there was a security alert all over the country and not just the South-West. The source said that security agents were not expecting the sect to disclose its next move before steps were taken to stop it. According to the source, the leadership of the Muslim community in the South-West has commenced an awareness campaign through the imams against acts of terror being perpetrated under the cloak of religion. The source recalled that the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Raji Fashola, had pulled down three places of worship near the seat of government at Alausa because of incriminating security reports against the sect. “There is security alert all over the country, not only in the South-West; the so-called plan is something we don’t expect them to execute before we take proactive steps. “Security agents are aware of their advanced plans and are nipping them in the bud. “The southern Muslims have value for human lives; they know that nobody can fight for God. They are not inconsiderate. The Muslim leadership in the South are putting their members on the alert; imams are already doing that,” a leader of the Muslim community said. In Port Harcourt, a leader of the Muslim community, Alhaji Sarki Gabas, denied that Muslims were using their mosques as armoury for the sect in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday. Gabas reportedly denied the reports linking Muslims in the Rivers State capital with perpetrators of terror acts in the society. Gabas had said, “It is not true that Victoria Street (in Port Harcourt) Mosque is being used for training Islamic militants and it is not true also that the Islamic school in Mile 3 houses militants and that Elelenwa Mosque is used as armoury. “All these are lies. We do not believe in violence.” http://www.nigerianeye.com/2012/03/security-agencies-uncover-boko-haram.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Nigerianeye+%28NigerianEye%29 |

The most celebrated and successful musical marriage in the history of Nigeria’s entertainment ended on a sour note during the week with the separation of multi-awards winning musician, D’Banj and his producer/partner Don Jazzy. Although details of the love gone sour affair between the two who were also co-owners of Mo’Hit Records remained hazy, indication that all was not well with the duo, was dropped by their close associates The record label’s manager and promoter, Mr. Sunday Are, who claimed ignorance of the development, said: “ I have just arrived from Ghana where I took one of my artistes, Omawunmi, on playing tour. I will get back to you as soon as I settle down and I am in touch with the duo.” A source close to Mo’Hits records told Vanguard, that not only was the story true but its also unfortunate. “It is unfortunate that this kind of thing should happen when success is knocking on the door for these two guys. How can one explain this? Its simply unexplainable”, our source lamented. *Dbanj & Don Jazzy But an obviously sad rap artiste, M.I., who also spoke to our reporter said: “I hope its not true. It will be very sad if it happens. These two are very generous people who have helped many up coming musicians (like me for instance) to find their feet. They have also helped to reposition the entertainment industry. One cannot over look the contribution these two have made to the Nigerian entertainment industry. It will be too sad if what you are saying is true.” What ever it is worth, the development may grossly affect the Nigerian entertainment industry which peaked when the duo got signed by Kanye West’s GOOD music in an all-time recording breaking deal worth $3million. The news of the separation is not only shocking but totally unexpected. The topic has become the most discussed on the internet. In fact, close friends of the duo told Vanguard: “It’s gone so bad that Don jazzy, who had remained largely in the background leaving the lime light to D’Banj, may have moved out of their Lekki mansion for undisclosed reasons. What could have led to bad blood between these two friends who had weathered storms to come this far? One of the reasons advanced for the separation, according to Mo’Hit sources, may be the Kanye West deal which observers believe favoured Jazzy more than D’Banj, a move that didn’t go down well with the Koko master. Another reason may not be unconnected with Don Jazzy’s negative reaction on the internet over D’Banj’s relationship with President Goodluck Jonathan. Don Jazzy had tweeted on on Twitter, the internet social network blasting President Jonathan for his insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian with his removal of fuel subsidy. This our source said may have infuriated D’Banj who was also lampooned by a cross section of the music industry practitioners for selling out to the presidency. “D’Banj believes that Don Jazzy ought to have been there for him, but was dis appointed that his friend should join his foes to castigate him ” a concerned friend revealed. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/03/dbanj-and-don-jazzy-may-break-business-ties/

The United States has urged Nigeria to tackle Boko Haram insurgency in the North by bringing jobs and development to the deprived region, and pledged to support President Goolduck Jonathan in the task. U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Wendy Sherman said yesterday that the United States was looking to establish a consulate in Kano, Nigeria’s biggest northern city and a recent target of attacks, as well as a number of other ways to help it fight Boko Haram. The group, which styles itself on the Taliban, has been blamed for almost daily shootings and bombings that have killed hundreds of people in the past two years. “Regarding the security concern, we agree with President Jonathan that this must be holistic approach. That it is about security, it is about development, it is about jobs,” Sherman said during the first stop of an African tour that also takes in Zambia and Kenya. “Together we will do whatever we can, from intelligence sharing, to assistance, to development, to security training.” Some have accused Jonathan of an over-reliance on security measures to defeat Boko Haram rather than addressing northerners’ underlying grievances, such as unemployment, which provide the group with a well of eager recruits. The recent Boko Haram onslaught on schools in Borno State is a reprisal against the continued attacks on Tsangaya (Islamiyya) schools and the arrest of clerics by security agents, the group’s spokesperson, Abul-Qaqa, has said. Qaqa, in an E-mailed response to questions from newsmen in Maiduguri, said, “We warned that security agents must stop attacking and arresting clerics in Tsangaya (Islamiyya) schools but nobody took our warning seriously. “They continued arresting Islamic teachers and that is why we resolve to continue attacking public schools. Certainly, if Qur’anic education will not be allowed to continue, then secular and western education will not continue also,” he said, noting that Islamic scholars were arrested at Bulabulin and Jajeri in Maiduguri metropolis. And when told that thousands of children were now missing classes because of the assault, Qaqa said, “We are not worried because what goes around comes around. Governments at all levels were not concerned with the fact that thousands of Muslim children have been forced to stop learning Qur’anic education in Tsangaya schools. On the attacks on places of worship especially churches, he said that the recent arrest of Christians while attempting to bomb a church in Bauchi State was a clear indication of the plot by security operatives to instigate violence. He alleged that the church would-be-bombers were planted by security operatives in order to create false alarm. “There is grand conspiracy in respect of the Christians that have been arrested while trying to detonate bombs in some churches. This is a script crafted by the state security service (SSS) in other to confuse people and convince other Muslims not to believe in what we are doing. “Agents of the SSS have been doing this for a very long time. They want the world to believe that we are attacking everybody but they would not succeed, by the grace of Allah,” he said. “We are attacking churches on retaliatory mission because Christians have burnt countless mosques in this country,” Qaqa said. Qaqa also debunked claims that his group was not waging a Jihad, but working for some individuals that wanted to dismember Nigeria. Asked when the group will seize fire, Qaqa said, “We have warned severally that we would continue launching attacks until our members are released. Unfortunately however, the trend of the arrest has been extended to our wives and children. We would soon start kidnapping the wives and children of all the people that have hands in the arrest of our wives and children.” http://dailytrust.com.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=156311:why-we-attacked-schools-boko-haram-&catid=1:news&Itemid=2 |

NIGERIA hit back at South Africa last night. Twenty-eight South Africans were denied entry into Lagos – a tit for tat that has deepened the row between the two countries. South Africa last Friday deported 125 Nigerians from the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johanesburg after denying them entry into the country for allegedly possessing fake yellow fever certificates. The Federal Government frowned at the action. The 28 passengers flew into the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard a South African Airways flight at about 9.30pm. They were expected to be deported last night or this morning. A source said: "The Federal Government decided to deny these 28 South Africans entry because of invalid documents and relevant health certificate clearance. "We are also deporting them back to South Africa. The Presidency has been notified of this action. "We will no longer overlook certain procedures which we have condoned in the spirit of African brotherhood." Earlier yesterday, Nigeria had threatened to retaliate South Africa’s maltreatment of Nigerians. Interior Minister Albo Moro said: "I want to assure you on one thing. The Federal Government has the capacity to reciprocate appropriately if it is found that (the deportation) was not done in good faith." He added: "At the moment, Nigeria maintains a very cordial diplomatic relations with South Africa and I can assure you that we will react appropriately if it is found that South Africa has taken unfriendly action against Nigeria. Moro spoke to reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Also yesterday, the Federal Government summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Kingsley Mambolo. Besides, the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olugbenga Ashiru, to appear before it today to clarify Nigeria’s relationship with other African countries. The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, asked the Federal Government to apply the principle of reciprocity in dealing with South Africa. Mambolo was at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain why South Africa maltreated Nigerian travellers last Friday. According to sources, when he got to the Ministry at about 3pm, Mambolo was asked to see the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi, instead of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. A source, who spoke in confidence, said: "When the South African High Commissioner got to the Ministry, the Permanent Secretary was directed to ask him to explain why 125 Nigerians were deported without diplomatic courtesy. "He spent about an hour interacting with the Permanent Secretary, but Nigeria was not convinced about the explanation given by South Africa. "We are demanding unreserved apology from South Africa for this ill-treatment of Nigerian travellers or else, we will take more drastic actions." Ashiru confirmed the invitation of the High Commissioner but he declined further comments. The Minister is to appear before the House Committee today to clarify Nigeria’ relationship with its African countries. The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, said it was disturbed by the series of negative attacks on Nigerians and its embassies, especially in the sub region. Elendu-Ukeje recalled the recent lock-up of some Nigerians in Togo without any explanation to the Nigerian government. She said: "We are indeed worried about all these indignation and scorn Nigerians are subjected to all over the world, especially by sister African nations. This calls for a review of our relationship with these countries. "So, we have invited the Minister of Foreign Affairs to a meeting on Tuesday to come and explain to us, our relationship with these countries and why Nigerians are being subjected to ridicule all over the world," she said. To Mrs Dabiri-Erewa, the illegal deportation of 125 Nigerians by the South African government is "inhuman". In a statement in Abuja, she faulted the "continuous unwarranted hostilities against Nigerians by the South Africa government". She said: "It is pathetic that 125 Nigerians, the highest so far, which include women and children, were delayed for 24 hours without water and food in an inhuman condition before being bundled back to Nigeria". "Do Nigeria ask South Africans to fill Yellow card when coming to Nigeria? Even then, passengers must have passed through this process while applying for visa in the Embassy. Why treat Nigerians with scorn and indignation. This is really appalling. "Is this the way to pay Nigeria back with their kind gesture? This is unfair and un-African." Mrs Dabiri-Erewa also recalled how South African businesses, such as MTN and Multi-Choice – owner of DSTV - among others, are thriving in Nigeria better than any part of Africa without any form of molestation from Nigerian government. The lawmaker recalled how the South African government stopped charging Nigerians deportation fees when Nigeria Embassy in South Africa under the High Commissioner Mohammed Marwa introduced it. She said: "I call on the Federal Government to protect her citizens by applying the law of reciprocity to South Africans coming to Nigeria by introducing the same stringent treatment meted to Nigerians going to South Africa." Speaking on Nigeria’s Porous border, Moro said: "It is unfair to say that we don’t know the category of persons that enter Nigeria. Nigeria, like any other big country, has this problem of border porousity. I agree with you that Nigeria’s border as vast as it is, is porous to some extent but that is not to say that we don’t know the category of people that enter Nigeria." http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/38881-nigeria-deports-28-south-africans-as-row-deepens.html |

Fifteen years after he was sentenced to death by hanging, Edet Obeten Mbang yesterday walked home a free man. In a short Judgment delivered by Justice Mahmud Mohammed, the Supreme Court discharged and acquitted him of complicity in the October 7, 1989 murder of one Baba Okoi. The panel agreed with the appellant’s counsel, Adekunle Oyesanya that Mbang was not guilty of the offence as charged even though he participated in the eating of the human meat of the deceased. Mbang and three others were convicted by a Cross-River State High Court, Ugep Division, on June 19, 1997. The other convicts are Obeten Leko Essien, Mbang Efoli Mbang and Fidelis Onen Obeten. Murder is covered by Sections 306 to 316 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 and punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code. The Prosecutor said Okoi was killed on October 7, 1989 and his “human meat” was “butchered” and “shared” by the appellant and his Co- Accused persons”. He described the appellant and his co-accused as members of Enyim Society, whose purpose is to kill human beings, share and eat their meat. According to the prosecution, all the accused and the deceased attended a funeral ceremony on the day of the murder where the Enyim War Dance, otherwise called “Kojo” dance was performed. He said the appellant witnessed and participated in the killing of their victim. During the trial, the prosecution called six witnesses and tendered 17 exhibits. At the close of the prosecution’s case, the appellant made a no case submission which was overruled by the trial High Court on January 15, 1997. The appellant and his co- accused were called upon to open their defence but they relied on the case of the prosecution. Upon hearing the Final Addresses of counsel for the appellant and respondent, the trial court, in a considered judgment delivered on June 19, convicted them for the said murder. Dissatisfied, the appellant appealed to the Court of Appeal, Calabar in Cross-River. Before the appeal could be heard, the appellant’s counsel applied to withdraw the appeal for want of merit. Although his application was granted, the appeal was dismissed. But the Supreme Court remitted the case back to the Court of Appeal, to be heard on its merit. Upon hearing the appeal on its merit, the Appeal Court on March 16, 2006, unanimously dismissed the appeal and affirmed the Judgment of the trial court. Unhappy with the Judgment, the appellant returned to the apex court through a Notice of Appeal of June 12, 2006. In his brief, the appellant’s counsel, Adekunle Oyesanya argued that Okoi died before hic client had any contact with his body. He cited a confessional statement of the appellant where he stated that he was invited by one of the accused; Onowa Enang Onen to his home that he had a meat to share only to discover that the meat was the body of a man without the head. “There is no doubt from the foregoing that the unambiguous evidence before the court was that the deceased, Baba Okoi, had been killed before the appellant came into the scene. It was therefore no more possible to kill an already dead man. The fact of the death shows that someone else different from the appellant killed the deceased. There was no act or omission on the part of the appellant directly causing the death of the deceased. There was no evidence of any intent, whether common or not by the appellant to kill or to do a grievous bodily harm or to do an act or make an omission likely to endanger the life of the deceased while pursuing an unlawful purpose”. He cited Supreme Court decisions in Aighoreghian & Anor V The state (2004), JSC (Part 1) 65 at Page 93-94; 98-99 per Niki Tobi JSC; State V Ogbubunjo (2001) JSC (Part 1) 90 at PP 95-96 per Onu JSC; Aigbadion v State (2000) 4SC (part 1) at 75, Durowode v The State (2000) 12 SC (Part 1) at 16 and Ahmed V The State (2001) 12 SC (Part 1) 135 at 148 lines 25-40 per Kutigi JSC, to support his argument. “In the peculiar, though unfortunate circumstances of this case, the death of the victim was not caused in any way by the appellant and neither was there any evidence of a common intent by the appellant and the other accused to kill the victim, , with the intention of eating his flesh”, Oyesanya added. www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/mobile/news/38483-15-years-after-supreme-court-frees-cannibal.html |
Student of the Ondo State School of Nursing in Akure, yesterday said they would not resume lectures until Governor Olusegun Mimiko rehabilitates their hostels. Our correspondent who visited the hostels said, the students refused to come out from their rooms, alleging that the state government has neglected their institution. They lamented that they have been living in congested rooms for the past six years. The school principal, Mrs. Oyekanbi Fatile refused to speak to the press on the matter, saying there was peace in the school. But the students who took newsmen around their hostels, complained about their poor state. A 200 level student (name withheld) said due to the terrible state of the hostels, some students sometimes pass the night in their classrooms. “The hostels are dilapidated and this forced us to contribute money to re-paint them. It is sad that we are suffering despite the huge money we pay. For instance, fresh students pay N123, 000 while old students pay N24, 000.” Our governor cannot be spending over N2billion on mega schools for primary pupils, when our hostels are in this condition,” the student said. www.dailytrust.com.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=156087:students-shun-lectures-over-poor-condition-of-hostels&catid=1:news&Itemid=2 |

This could pass for one of the wonders of the world. It is a strange but true life story of a 22-year lady, Chinyere Alegu, who dragged her cousin’s daughter, Chioma Edukwu, 5, to a nearby bush, inserted her fingers in her mouth and pulled out her tongue . The victim died as a result of the wicked act. The incident took place at Ndi Duma Ekpaomaka village, in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. According to a source, the suspect allegedly committed the crime under the influence of some unseen forces. He narrated how the suspect behaved strangely, each time the spirit came upon her. But despite that, Chinyere was said to have taken her Christian life seriously and even became a ‘prayer warrior.’ Crimewatch was also told that the suspect, who was described by many as a very quiet person, usually saw vision and received revelations ‘anytime she was in spirit’. One day, she told her relatives how she dreamt and the spirit directed her to pull out an object from an elderly woman’s mouth. However, when she woke up from sleep, she traveled to her cousin’s village, Ishiekke Igbubuikwo and told him she wanted to train his daughter, Chioma. Monday Edukwu was said to have granted her request and asked Chioma to go with her. Chinyere was said to have taken the little girl to her elder sister’s house at Ekpaomaka where they slept in the same room. At about 1.30a.m., Chinyere claimed she was directed to go and pray for an elderly woman and to pull out an object from her mouth but she decided to go along with the victim. But instead of going to the woman’s house as she claimed, she dragged the little girl to a bush, which was a kilometre away from her sister’s house, allegedly pushed her to the ground and started praying for her. As the prayer was going on, she allegedly inserted her fingers in the girl’s mouth and pulled out her tongue. And when the suspect came back to her senses, she realised that it was Chioma, and not the elderly woman from whose mout.hhe ‘removed the object’ . Realising the implication of what she did, she raised the alarm and beckoned on a hunter, that was passing by for assistance. Crimewatch gathered that the girl died before help could come her way. The news of the incident spread like wildfire and attracted the villagers to the scene. They reported the matter at Ikwo Police Station while policemen went to the bush where they arrested Chinyere and recovered a copy of Holy Bible. The suspect, who spoke to Crimewatch, said: “ I am a hair dresser by profession. I love to evangelise and attend churches and where they hold rallies and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. I was sleeping when the Holy Spirit instructed me to go and pull out an object from an elderly woman’s mouth. I dreamt again before I took Chioma to the bush for prayer and while there, I used my hands to remove her tongue. “Having realised what I did, I raised the alarm and appealed to people to come and help me revive her. I used my right hand to remove her tongue. Sometimes, Holy Spirit visit me. I can pray in the house for three to four hours. I don’t know what to say but to beg my cousin to forgive me,” she lamented. The deceased’s father told the reporter that he was surprised that Chinyere killed his daughter. “She came to me to request that my daughter stayed with her. Two days later, information got to us that Chioma, my first daughter, was found dead in the bush. I saw my daughter’s tongue on the ground and was later told that Chinyere removed it. I want law to take its course, I want justice to be done. I don’t know what came over her. I know her to be a Christian, a prayer warrior,” the grieving father said. The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeola Adeniji, said the suspect had been arrested and would be tried for murder. He said: “We didn’t see any object on her apart from the Bible.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/mar/01/national-03-01-2012-000.html |

› Home View web version THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2012 CuteNaija at 3/01/2012 02:43:00 AM Russian scientists aim at making human beings live forever in the next 10 years Human minds could be downloaded into robots within 10 years, allowing human beings to 'live forever', says the Russian entrepreneur who heads a hi-tech research project called 'Avatar'. Itskov, a media entrepreneur, claims to have hired 100 scientists to reach this goal - and is now looking for other scientists to help with the project. 'This project is leading down the road to immortality,' says Itskov. 'A person with a perfect Avatar will be able to remain part of society. People don’t want to die.' Itskov, a 31-year-old media entrepreneur, says that he aims to transplant a human brain into a robot body within 10 years. He says his technology will be of interest at first to the 'disabled and close to dying' ‘I understand these are some very big challenges for scientists,’ Itskov says. ‘But I believe in something you call ‘The American Dream.’ If you put all your energy and time into something, you can make it a reality. Itskov envisages surgically 'transplanting' a human consciousness into a robot body within 10 years. He hopes to then 'upload' minds without surgery, leaving human bodies as empty husks as their owners 'live on' inside robots. The project is called Avatar after the James Cameron movie, set far in the future, where human soldiers use mind control to inhabit the bodies of human alien hybrids as they carry out a war against the inhabitants of a distant world. 'The next effort of science will be to create a new body for the human being,' says Itskov, speaking at the Global Future 2045 conference. 'It will have a perfect brain-machine interface to allow control and a human brain life support system so the brain can survive outside the body.' Itskov says that the system will at first be of interest to, 'Disabled people and people at the edge of dying.' 'The third phase will be to create an artificial human brain,' he says - a computer environment into which human minds can be uploaded. The Daleks' cyborg leader 'Davros': The first stage of Itskov's project will be to transplant a human brain into a robot. Itskov says that the system will at first be of interest to, 'People at the edge of dying.' Measuring brain waves with EEG machine: Recent breakthroughs have allowed scientists to 'see' what is inside people's heads for the first time - but could the technology really be used to create robot Avatars? His final goal, he says, is to upload human minds into holographic bodies. Holograms give plenty of advantages. You can walk through walls, move at the speed of light, he says. ‘Remember in Star Wars, Obi- Wan’s hologram? That was pretty amazing.’ Itskov says he wants to work with DARPA - the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency in the U.S military. DARPA is already researching ways for its troops to use their minds to remotely control androids who will take human soldiers' place on the battlefield. The Pentagon's hi-tech research arm, has earmarked $7million for research into the project, also nicknamed Avatar. According to the Darpa's 2013 budget: 'The Avatar program will develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine and allow it to act as the soldier’s surrogate.' www.nigerianeye.com/2012/03/russian-scientists-aim-at-making-human.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Nigerianeye+%28NigerianEye%29&m=1 |
Former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, who is facing a 10-count charge of stealing, money laundering and corruption at a London court, yesterday, denied pleading guilty to corruption charges. Ibori, in a statement signed by his media assistant, Mr Tony Eluemunor, also explained why he pleaded guilty to money laundering charges, saying: “Ibori did not want a long‑drawn trial where Nigeria’s name would be bandied about in a foreign court.” According to Eluemunor, “the world was made to believe that Ibori’s guilty plea was a sudden turn around and not a well‑deliberated act that was part of a plea bargain deal. But it is on record that several Nigerian newspapers of last Sunday published different versions of that self same story; that Ibori would plead guilty as part of a plea bargain arrangement. “Of course, that plea bargain deal would only kick in with Ibori’s pleading guilty, which he did on Monday. After that plea, which had been successfully foretold by Nigerian newspapers, both the prosecution and the defence counsel were to return on April 16 and 17 to make their needed statements. Unfortunately, while Ibori’s lead counsel stayed true to this time‑tested legal procedure, the prosecution counsel went rogue and began to make wild and unfounded statements aimed at nothing but self‑glorification and Ibori’s demonisation. “What was not clear to Nigerians was that the prosecution lawyers were labouring at damage control as the publication in several Nigerian newspapers of last Sunday had leaked out the secret that the seven‑year investigation against Ibori had not only cost the British taxpayer £14 million but was funded by the DfID —the Department of Foreign Development. The visit of London Metropolitan Police “The prosecution then laboured hard to justify the money spent and stave off another official inquiry into the much investigated London Metropolitan Police, that have been accused often of grave misdeeds. Consequently, the London Metropolitan Police invited droves of media agencies and several statements to justify their jamborees in the sun, whereby agents visited the far‑flung corners of the earth with little to show for their efforts. “They even visited Nigeria three times, and lowly policemen who had never shaken hands with their British superiors had dinner with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in the deep recesses of Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. Some of the statements were contradictory; some totally wild and even insane. “Worst of all, several foreign media quoted the London Police list of landed properties they claimed belonged to Ibori, that they promised to confiscate. But anyone who has followed the cases concerning Ibori’s sister and Udoamaka Okoronkwo would have noticed that some of the same buildings featured prominently there. The truth is that what is at stake in London for now is just about three average buildings, finish. What matters “What matters to Ibori is that all corruption charges were dropped by the London Police for lack of evidence. Any claim that any corruption charge is facing him is pure propaganda. He did not plead guilty to any corruption charge. With the corruption charges removed because they could not be proved beyond any reasonable doubt, the Police stayed with money laundering charges, to be proved by nothing but inference — the convincing of a jury of white persons. No proof, no evidence would be needed then, no documentary truths would be established. “The British and the Nigerian establishments have been driving this case to a pre‑determined end, and a battle weary Ibori was advised to plead guilty, end what had promised to be a long‑drawn trial, and begin to rebuild his life which had been tossed about in an ocean of legal controversy and trials because of politics— since 2003, that is nine long years ago. Also, Ibori did not want a long‑drawn trial where Nigeria’s name would be bandied about in a forign court.” www.vanguardngr.com/2012/03/i-didnt-plead-guilty-to-corruption-charges-ibori/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
A worker in a church, Romanus Oparaugo, shocked the congregation of Christian Pentecostal Mission, CPM , at Ajao Estate, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, when he pretended he was praying during a vigil and went to the altar and stole church offering. Oparaugo, who lives at 14, Wahab Street, Ajao Estate, confessed that he has been doing it since 2005 after he joined and became a worker in the church because he does not receive any allowance from the church as a worker. The father of two kids was unlucky this time because he was caught, handed over to the police and charged before Isolo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for stealing. He was yesterday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment without an option of fine after he pleaded guilty. The 35-year old Oparaugo, who hails from Mbaise in Imo state, pretended to be praying and went to the altar and stole N45, 000 in the offering box and hid it in the pocket. He was, however, apprehended by security men who searched him and recovered the money before handing him over to the police at Ajao station where he confessed to stealing the money. After he was charged to court, he stunned the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O. M. Ajayi, by confessing that it was not the first time he was stealing offering money. Oparaugo now in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa, said he joined the church in 2005 and since then he has been stealing from the offering box as a means of livelihood. He also revealed that some church workers also do it. He pleaded guilty to the two-count charge and pleaded for leniency. The court found him guilty as charged and sentenced him accordingly. The court ruled that the sentence will run concurrently. While going to prison, he told P.M.NEWS that he took God’s money and not church’s own. http://pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/02/28/church-worker-jailed-for-stealing-offering-since-2005/ |
Members of the Boko Haram on Monday set fire to Maiduguri Experimental School, a private school in Ruwan Zafi area of the metropolis. The incident brings to four the number of schools set ablaze by the terror group within a week. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group had earlier burnt down public primary schools in Budum, Abba Ganaram and Kulo Gomna, all in the Borno capital. The group, who’s driving principle was to stop western education, has already denied hundreds of school children access to their classes for lessons. Residents told newsmen in Maiduguri, that the Experimental School was set ablaze in the early hours of the day by unidentified persons. “We heard an explosion around 3am around the school but everybody was afraid. Later in the morning we noticed heavy smoke coming out of the school. “By the time we checked about two classes were on fire, so we mobilised and stopped the fire from spreading,” a resident said. He expressed shock at the development since the school was owned by a private citizen and not the government. “We were surprised at the fire because this is the first time a private school has been attacked since the terror attack began a few days back,” he said. Mr Samuel Tizhe, the Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident, saying the police had opened investigation to uncover the perpetrators, but added that no arrest had been made. “It is true that two more schools have been destroyed by fire. Just like the previous ones, we are making efforts to track the perpetrators.” Meanwhile, pandemonium broke out on Monday at the Seme Border, in Badagry, Lagos State, after an item suspected to be a bomb was discovered in a motor park near the checkpoint of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). Briefing the press in Lagos, the Lagos State Police Command spokesman, SP Jaiyeoba Joseph, said that following an alarm raised on the discovery at about 4 a.m., a police officer immediately alerted officials of the Police Bomb Disposal Unit at the border. Joseph said that a preliminary examination of the bag revealed that it contained a wall clock, two batteries and wires, as well as a well-wrapped iron suspected to be a fuel pump. He said that officials of the Police Bomb Disposal Unit explained that the contents of the bag could not explode like a bomb, and should ordinarily not cause any alarm. The spokesman said that officials of the Police Anti-Bomb Disposal Unit planned to meet soon with all the security agencies operating at the border on the issue. Joseph advised Lagos residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious items in their neighbourhoods to the police. www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2012/02/28/boko-haram-burns-4-schools/ |
