Facts emerged yesterday how some soldiers allegedly connived with Boko Haram members to bomb the Church of Christ in Nigeria, COCIN, headquarters in Jos on Sunday in which eight persons were killed, 39 others injured and several vehicles destroyed. COCIN President, Rev. Soja Bewarang, who addressed journalists in Jos yesterday, narrated how the bombers together with the soldiers deceived the security men on guard to carry out the attack. But the Special Task Force on Jos crisis STF denied that its members were involved in the bombing but instead alleged that the suicide bomber, who was killed by angry youths inside the church premises, was actually a member of the church. STF Media Officer, Capt. Mdahelya Markus, said that the dead man, Adam Joseph Ashaba, actually came to the church with his family members. Bewarang said: “A navy blue colour Volkswagen Vento Sedan accompanied by two military personnel dressed in desert camouflage was escorted through the church security network deployed at strategic location from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, axis to the Hill Station Roundabout by a Special Military Task Force Hilux van. “On getting to the church gate, the military Hilux van drove on towards the Hill Station junction, while the Vento car made right turn to enter COCIN headquarters where there was a military personnel readily waiting at the gate of the church. He asked the church security to open the gate for the two to drive in. “They told the security personnel at the gate that they have brought assistance for the church while the church security refused to oblige to their request, the vehicle rammed into the gate and made straight to the church auditorium.” He added that the driver sped toward the auditorium and on reaching the entrance the bomb went off, stressing that the car was shattered into pieces and the engine landed just about five metres before the pulpit and the shrapnel scattered all over. The driver’s body was also dismembered into several pieces. “The soldiers who work very hard to clear the way for the bombers was disarmed and arrested by the mobile police and military personnel who came to the scene of the incident and was taken to the military hospital, Rukuba barracks in Jos,” Bewarang said. Bewarang said that members of the church lost 28 vehicles valued at over N100m during the attack. Meanwhile, the bombed COCIN headquarters church has become a Mecca of sort as thousands of people have been trouping into the premises to see the extent of destruction caused by the explosion. As early as 7a.m. yesterday, the church compound was packed full with sympathisers who expressed outrage over the bomb attack. They include Senator Joshua Dariye, Senator John Dantong, representing Plateau North in the National Assembly, Sen. Victor Lar, Sen. John Shagaya, and Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Zone Four, Haruna John. Speaking with the church leadership after inspecting the premises on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, John said the police and other security agencies “are working round the clock to unravel those behind the act.” The DIG, who led other security chiefs on a condolence visit, expressed shock at the destruction and appeal to the public to take solace in God. The police boss said that security personnel would soon unravel the perpetrators. In another development, the northern apex socio-cultural organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, yesterday said that Nigerians should join forces against the perennial bombing and killings of people by the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram. ACF also appealed to members of the sect to address their grievances in the court of law rather than unleashing pains on innocent Nigerians. The forum in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani in Kaduna, frowned at reprisal attack in Plateau State with the bombing of COCIN. ACF said such attacks were not within the tenets of any religion and appealed to perpetrators to stop the mindless killing of innocent people The group said: “Arewa Consultative Forum seriously frowns at the spate of bomb explosions directed at innocent Nigerians, including worshippers, as symbolised by those in mosque in Kano, COCIN Church in Jos and those of prisons in Gombe, that have been credited to Boko Haram. “The forum is also not happy with the reported reprisal attacks, precisely because the attacks by both Boko Haram and reprisals are directed at innocent people who are not party to any perceived grievances of the feuding parties.” In Adamawa State, three policemen were on Sunday night killed by suspected members of the sect at the Shuwa Divisional Police Station in Madagali Local Government Area of the state. National Mirror gathered that there was a gun battle between the police and the armed men who used locally- made improvised explosive device. The incident, which occurred at about 8p.m. led to the death of the three police officers. Madagali Local Government shares border with Borno State, where the activities of the militants started some few years ago. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adenrele Shinaba, who spoke through the Police Public Relations Officer, Altine Daniel (ASP), stated that details of the attack were still sketchy as the command was yet to get full report of the incident from the area. www.nationalmirroronline.net/news/32426.html |

For the third time in three months, Ghana experienced another electric power failure on Sunday plunging the whole nation into darkness for about three hours. The system failure at the National Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) occurred at the power transmitter at about 7.45 pm but was restored in some parts of the country at about 9.30 pm same day. Officials of the Electricity Commission of Ghana (ECG) ascribed the fault to a technical failure. The Public Relations Officer of ECG, Gloria Dua Saky on Sunday night could only confirm that there was power failure in Greater Accra region, Tema, Winneba (Central region), and the Ashanti region. However reports coming in from the interior indicate that all 10 regions in the country were affected by the blackout, which spanned over two hours. The Public Relations Officer of GRIDCO Mr. Albert Quainoo said the whole nation was affected and attributed it to technical problems emanating from the Akosombo, Tema and Takoradi power plants interconnectivity. Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Volta Region Authority Mr. Kweku Awotwi has attributed current energy challenges in the country to the short-fall in the supply of gas from the West African Gas Pipeline Company. He said that WAGPCO presently supplies VRA about 90,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) of Liquefied petroleum gas daily. The Chief Executive Officer, who said the problem was temporary, explained that Ghana currently needs a daily supply of 1,600 megawatts power for both domestic and industrial purpose. He hinted that plans were underway to shore up daily supply by 960 megawatts by 2013. http://dailytrust.com.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=155705:ghana-records-third-power-failure-in-3-months&catid=1:news&Itemid=2 |

Pastors in Nigeria have lambasted the founder, Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome over his comment that masturbation is not a sin against God but a mere habit that God is not angry about. Since the controversial pastor made the comment recently, angry reactions have been pouring in from Christendom over what they called heresy, being preached by the pastor, which negates the words of God. Oyakhilome was asked by one of his pastors how one could overcome masturbation and he replied that “the reason you are thinking of stopping it (masturbation) is because you think it has become a habit for you… masturbation is not more than a habit than any other habit. “So once you make up your mind that you want to break a particular habit, you just do it, you make up your mind… in fact the best way to break a habit is to replace it with another habit. “There is one thing I would like to bring to your mind that may be of help to you because the reason you are thinking of stopping this is because of what you think it is.” He added that “no matter how wrong you think this is in your mind, get this straight, in itself, it is not a sin against God,” emphasising that as a result of this belief that it is a sin, Satan used it to oppress people of God “making them feel ineffective an inefficient in the things of God.” Reacting to Oyakhilome’s comment, the Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Ola Makinde said there was only one way of having sex permitted by God in the Bible, which is only through marriage. “There is only one way of having sex in the Bible which is natural. Masturbation is unnatural and unethical. Whatever is unnatural and unethical is abomination. I leave him to his own opinion,” he said. According to Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, every believer must be able to subject his body to control because it could lead to something else. Popular Evangelist, Pastor Akin Fasawe said Masturbation is a sin as stipulated in the Bible, saying that death was even recommended in the Bible for those who practiced such things. “Masturbation is a sin because when you masturbate, you will release. If the minister of God said masturbation is not a sin, he can easily tell his church that fornication is not a sin. The Bible recommends death in the Old Testament,” he stated. According to Primate Elijah Ayodele of the INRI Evangelical Church, it is stated clearly in the Bible that masturbation is a sin against God. “That is his own view. Where did he see it in the Bible that masturbation is not a sin? Maybe he has his own Bible. It is a bad thing. Maybe it is in his Bible,” he laughed. Pastor Akin Akande of the Men of Purpose Ministry stated that masturbation is a sin. “It is like abusing the gift of God. It is heresy. The Bible says it is a sin to derive pleasure outside the content of marriage,” he added. Pastor Leke Akinola of the Upper Room Baptist, said self induced masturbation is a sin against God and that it is heresy for any minister of God to say it is not a sin. According to Rev. Sam Ogedengbe, “masturbation is a sin and it is unbiblical. It is demonic and anyone engaging in it should know that it has spiritual connection.” http://news2.onlinenigeria.com/headlines/142899-nigerian-pastors-blast-oyakhilome-on-masturbation-controversy.html |

A gang of armed robbers operating in Delta State overpowered a military patrol team in a gun battle at the weekend, and fled with a Toyota Hilux vehicle attached to the squad after raiding a bank at Umunede. One of the soldiers was wounded by the bandits who also shot an onlooker while escaping with their booty at Agbor. Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Charles Muka, who confirmed the robbery, told Sunday Vanguard that a staff of the bank has been arrested in connection with the incident. It was gathered that the bandits, who might have operated with the knowledge of an insider at the bank, successfully completed their mission but shot dead a passerby and injured a driver for allegedly blocking their escape route. The hoodlums, reportedly heading towards Warri after the Umunede operation via the Agbor-Obiaruku-Abraka road, were confronted by the military patrol team. An eye witness said: “It was a fierce gun duel. The robbers overpowered the soldiers. One of the soldiers sustained bullet wounds and they (robbers) took the soldiers Hilux van and fled with it”. The police spokesman confirmed that the bank staff, arrested, fled from the police station some hours after he was nabbed, but he was tracked down and investigation into the matter was being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police command. Sunday Vanguard learnt that the suspect was fingered in a similar robbery incident in the bank in the past as the person that gave information to robbers. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/02/robbers-raid-bank-in-delta-kill-onlooker-shoot-soldier-hijack-army-van/ |

Ijebu-Ode (Ogun) – An Ijebu-Ode Customary Court in Ogun on Wednesday dissolved a 10-year-old marriage between of one Alhaji Ibrahim Oduwole and his wife, Shade, on the ground of childlessness and provocation. Oduwole had earlier in February taken his wife before the court seeking the dissolution of the 10-year-old marriage accusing her of childlessness, provocation and uncaring attitude towards him. Oduwole, 70, told the court that Shade, 35, could not bear him children in the last 10 years of their marriage, adding that she was fond of fighting him on a regular basis. “In spite of the fact that my wife could not bear me children since we got married 10 years ago, she is also fond of fighting me and does not care about my well-being. “I want immediate dissolution of the marriage, and I also want the court to order her to return all my property back to me,” he said. The wife, in her response, told the court that her childlessness was not her fault, adding that she had several miscarriages. “My childlessness is not my fault. I try many times to conceive but, all resulted in miscarriages. “I don’t fight him as he claimed but rather he is the one that use to fight me,” she said. She, however, agreed that, the marriage be dissolved. In his ruling, the President of the court, Mr T.O. Kanimodo, said that considering the clear evidence given by the plaintiff, the court had no choice but to dissolve the marriage. “Having considered the evidence presented by the plaintiff, the 10-year-old marriage is hereby dissolved with immediate effect.” The court also ordered the respondent to park her belongings from the plaintiff’s house with immediate effect. Like any observant parent, Mrs. Kehinde Oduntan became concerned when she wanted to wash the clothes of her children and noticed what looked like semen in her 12-year-old daughter’s underwear. She quickly summoned her husband, Peter, and informed him of her discovery. Peter confirmed that what she saw was actually semen. The parents questioned their daughter (name withheld) and after much threat, she told them their 47-year-old neighbour, Mr. Lateef Amuda, was the one that had sex with her. “We asked her how many times he had had sex with her and she refused to tell us,” the mother told PUNCH Metro. It was learnt that the girl later told nurses at a hospital that Amuda had had sex with her four different times. When our correspondent visited the family at their home in Meiran area of Lagos, the girl maintained that the man actually raped her four times. Her mother said, “We were angry; we could not fathom why Amuda, whom we have always seen as a family friend, could do such a thing to a young girl. My daughter said Amuda would come to our apartment and ask her to follow him. She said those times he slept with her, my husband and I were not around. “She told us the last time he slept with her, she was sleeping on the bed and Amuda entered our apartment, woke her up and asked her to follow him. “We then reported at the Oke-Odo Police Station and the police arrested him. While Amuda was locked up, his relatives came to beg us to get him released. “They apologised to us to forget about the matter, that what had been done could not be undone. We were furious. I told them I was not a fool that the police would decide what to do with him.” It was learnt that Amuda was arrested on February 2 and was released five days after. Since his release, the suspect had not returned home. When our correspondent visited Amuda’s apartment, his wife and 15-year-old daughter refused to grant him audience when he identified himself and stated his mission. The victim’s mother told PUNCH Metro that she took her daughter to the hospital for tests, including HIV and pregnancy tests. She said although the results were negative, there was need to repeat the tests based on medical advice. “The hospital said we might have to come back for more tests in the near future because some things might not manifest in her body for now,” she said. Amuda reportedly insisted on his innocence throughout the time he was locked up at the police cell. However, he purportedly wrote a letter to the victim’s parents, in which he promised to pay the sum of N15,000 for the girl’s treatment. The letter, shown to our correspondent was written in Yoruba and purportedly signed by two of Amuda’s relatives; Bose Adesan and Taju Amuda. “I, Lateef Amuda, promise as a result of the incident at my residence, where I was accused of raping a girl, that I would pay the sum of N15, 000 to the family of Peter Oduntan for her treatment by the end of February,” the letter stated. “We are angry that he has been released. The police said there was not much they could do on the case,” the girl’s mother said. When our correspondent called Amuda on the telephone, he denied raping the girl. Amuda said, “That girl is too young for me to do something like that to. I don’t know why she kept mentioning my name. “I decided to pay the money on the orders of the police and my relatives. The IPO said I should go and apologise to the family and my relatives followed me to apologise. “When we got there, the girl’s family told me that if I admitted that I raped her, they would drop the case. So, I said I did it because I did not want to prolong the matter. More so, my relatives told me not to argue with them and agreed.” When asked why he had not been home since he was released from police custody, he said, “I have been feeling ashamed. You know when something like this happens, the whole neighbourhood would be making jest of the person accused.” However, a source at the police station denied that the police advised Amuda to apologise to the girl’s family. The source said, “God would judge him if he actually went to tell such a lie. I was infuriated when the mother of the girl informed me that Amuda had written an undertaken to pay the family some money. “When I asked him, he said it was his family that told him to write the undertaking and apologise to the family. Nobody here (police station) is related to the family in any way. Which policeman would do such an unprofessional thing?” The source said investigation was still ongoing on the case and that the medical report had not been delivered. http://www.punchng.com/metro/man-accused-of-raping-12-year-old-girl-four-times/ |
A woman in Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Philomena Olawunmi, who had been in coma for three days after she was hit with the butt of a gun by a policeman, has regained consciousness. PUNCH Metro learnt that Philomena, who owns a shop at 10, Bassey Akpan Street, Etoi, Uyo, was in coma for three days after she was attacked by a policeman. It was gathered that a team of policemen attached to the Petroleum Taskforce at Osong Omah Estate in Uyo was invited by a driver with the Niger Delta Development Commission, who allegedly rammed into the woman’s shop on February 12. Our correspondent learnt that some customers who were in the woman’s shop were furious and challenged the driver for driving recklessly. The bus driver, who was suspected to be drunk, allegedly slapped one of the customers, Mr. Emmanuel Lawal, for challenging him. Lawal, it was learnt, retaliated and that resulted in a fight between the two men. The NDDC’s driver was said to have invited the policemen to the scene. Philomena said, “I heard a bang and quickly rushed out to see through a narrow entrance whether the men who were drinking outside the shop were affected by the accident or not. But I could only see the bus that rammed into the shop. I did not see anybody. But some of the customers, shouted to tell me that they were alive and that had only sustained minor injuries. “When my husband, Mr. Ajibola Olawunmi, came, I told him that it was an accident. He asked if anybody had been killed or injured. I told him ‘no’ and that two of the men who were drinking only sustained minor injuries. Then, my husband asked the driver to go so that people would not continue to gather around the shop to incite unnecessary tension. “As I was explaining the matter to my husband, one of the customers asked the driver to accept his fault; the driver then walked up to the customer and slapped him. When Lawal told him that he is an elderly man and would not like to engage in a brawl with him, the driver slapped him again. “At this point, my husband asked the man to stop beating his brother. But before he knew it, the driver also slapped my husband twice. My husband and the driver began to struggle. When the driver freed himself, he brought out his telephone and called the three riot policemen. “When the policemen arrived, they did not find out what happened. Rather, they descended on my husband and me. One of them used the butt of the gun to hit me on my head. That was the last thing I could remember.” Ajibola said after his wife collapsed, the policemen further brutalised him, adding that some residents of the area later rushed them to a hospital. Ajibola said, “They first moved my wife to a private hospital, Dominic Private Hospital, Ekpri Nsukara, Nwaniba, Uyo. But when they could not revive her, she was taken to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. She was revived after three days – that was on Wednesday. “None of the policemen could wait and see what they had done. Instead, they cocked their guns and threatened to shoot everybody, jumped into their van and sped off.” An eyewitness, Mr. Albert Bassey, said the action of the policemen showed that they were heartless and uncivilised. “This is something we should not condone in this country. This is gross abuse of human rights; we must not continue to live with it. It is bad,” he said. The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onyekaozuru Orji, said any case of police brutality should be reported to the authorities. He said, “If any policeman brutalises anybody, it is the duty of that person to report such a policeman to the authorities. We do not condone indiscipline; we have an internal cleansing system that takes care of act of indiscipline among erring members of the force. “If the policeman involved is found to be culpable, then a departmental disciplinary measure will be applied against such a person. We don’t condone it. They are supposed to protect members of the public. It is not their duty to intimidate and inflict injury on any member of the public.” http://www.punchng.com/metro/woman-in-coma-after-she-was-brutalised-by-policemen/
