The Congress of the United States of America, Harvard and Oxford universities have stopped exchange programme for training Nigerian lawmakers over their consistent failure to attend, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, hassaid.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja during an interactive session with chairmen of the House standing committees and the National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS), Ekweremadu said his colleagues were fond of absconding from training abroad after being paid.
“There was an instance I had aprogramme at Oxford with some of our colleagues they never showed up until the last day they came there and wanted to join but they refused. In fact, at the US Senate, it took about six months to resolve the problem because they said each time we send people they don’t come.”
For her part, Director General of the institute, Dr. Ladi Hamalai , berated the legislators for their failures to attend overseas trainings.
Also, a female member from Oyo State, Mrs. Ayo Omidiran, blamed the lack of transparency in the selection process of members for training as being responsible for non-attendance.
Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal appealed to his colleagues to utilise the services of the institute in order to enhance the quality oftheir debates on legislations.

CrimeBREAKING NEWS: Kidnapped German Killed In JTF Raid by chuks49(op): 10:55am On May 31, 2012
A top security source has told Daily Trust that a German, Raufach Edgar, who was kidnapped in Kano on January 26 this year was killed by his captors this morning before he could be rescued by men of the JTF.
The JTF had conducted a raid at Danbare area opposite the new campus of Bayero University Kano this morning after tracing the kidnapped German to the hideout where he was being held but the captors killed him before the JTF could apprehend them.
The raid is still ongoing and sporadic shootings are still being heard by residents who are all trapped within their homes and unable to go to work. A military helicopter is also still hovering overhead, providing aerial support to the forces on the ground.
The JTF is to brief the press soon on the incident.
Raufach Edgar was until his kidnap working with Dantata and Sawoe construction company. He was abducted bytwo gun men around 8 am on January 26 along the Zaria - Kano expressway were his company is located.
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb connection
On March 27, a Mauritanian and four other men were arrested in Kano over the January kidnapping. Four of thesuspects were arrested in a raid on a supermarket owned by the Mauritanian, while the fifth was held in a separate raid.
“Guns and a laptop were recovered in the store and the documents found in the computer, including an AQIM operation manual, showed thatthe suspects are linked to AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) and were involved inthe kidnap of the German engineer in January,” one of the sources said in describing the supermarket raid.
AQIM has also disclosed through a private news agencyin Mauritania a week before the raid that it was holding the German and that it wanted to swap him for a jailed Muslim woman.
A video obtained by the agency, ANI, showed Raupach, his hands tied behind his back, surrounded by masked gunmen. In the video he called on his "parents, friends and German public opinion" to convince Berlin to "bring an end to the torture of our Muslim sister", adding that onlyher liberation will save his life.
AQIM warned that any attempt to rescue Raupach will lead to his death, as happened in the case of Italian engineer FrancoLamolinara and British colleague Chris McManus, killed earlier this month during a failed rescue bid by Nigerian forces.
A source, speaking of the Mauritanian, said “he turned the upper floor of his store intoa hideout where he housed his three Nigerian accomplices.”
Germany responds
A release said to be authorisedby the German Embassy in Abuja and published as an advert in Daily Trust on May 11, 2012 claimed the German woman in question, had been released.
The woman, Filiz Gelowicz, who had converted to Islam and now bears the name Uma Saifullah Al-Ansariya, was released two weeks ago, according to the advert.
The publication announcing therelease of the jailed German woman said, “100 days missing. Your sister Uma Saifullah Al-Ansariya (Filiz Gelowicz) is free since two weeks. When do you release our brother Edgar?? His friendsare waiting for him…”
Edgar’s photo was placed by the side of the text of the advert, which also contained a message in Arabic apparently meant to inform the kidnappers of the release of Gelowicz.

PoliticsArmed Robbers Attack Passenger Bus, Rape Girls by chuks49(op): 11:47am On May 30, 2012
Two females in a bus conveying passengers from Lagos to Abuja were last Tuesday raped by armed robbers who attacked their bus at Sagamu area of Ogun State.

It was gathered that the three-man gang armed robbers were among the passengers that boarded the bus at Jibowu area of Lagos.

But on getting to Sagamu, they brought out their guns, ordered the driver to stop and then diverted the bus.

The Station Manager, Ifesinachi Bus Transit, the operator of the vehicle, who identified himself simply as Nelson, confirmed the incident. He said the victims would be compensated.

He said, “Truly, the bus was robbed, and I immediately left to meet the victims when the report got to us.

“I addressed everybody, including the two girls that were raped. Some were given money to return home while others were advised to report at our Jibowu office for another bus to convey them to Abuja the next day.

“Some of them disagreed with the arrangement. I spoke to the two ladies that were raped in privacy and volunteered to take them to the hospital. One of them refused and the other who said she was 18-year-old accepted.

Nelson admitted that the passengers were not checked before they boarded the vehicle, saying he thought the style used by the robbers was no longer in vogue.

“We are sorry for not checking the passengers but you need to understand that nobody is perfect. There was also security arrangement we put in place but we stopped when we felt things had normalised. This was part of the reasons why we don’t operate night buses,” he said.

On the insinuation that the bus’ driver could have been the mastermind of the robbery, the station manager said all their workers were reliable.

Nelson said, “He parked at Somolu because of the limited space at our office. I could have called him but his phone and other valuables were also taken by the robbers.”

A final year pupil of the Nigeria Military School, Kaduna State, who was one of the victims, Feyisa Ayo-Vaughan, said the robbery took place few hours after they left Lagos.

He said, “We left Lagos around 8am. On getting to Sagamu, one of them brought out a pistol, pointed it at the driver and took over the steering and drove us into the bush. We were searched, robbed, and then the two girls were raped.”

The pupil, who lost his documents and money to the robbers, said the documents might affect his leaving the school in August.

Another victim of the robbery, who is also a pupil of the NMS, Silas Anure, said the attack was like a dream.

“They drove us into the bush and collected our money and even raped two girls. Two of the robbers slept with one girl, while the other two robbers slept with the second girl,” he claimed.

PoliticsLagos Reabsorbs 34 Sacked Doctors by chuks49(op): 6:27am On May 30, 2012
By Damilola Oyedele, Paul Obi
Lagos State Government has reabsorbed 34 medical doctors out of the 788 sacked recently by the state government, THISDAY can report.
It was gathered that the 34 doctors had re-applied to the state Ministry of Health, following which Governor Babatunde Fashola, approved their being reabsorbed into the state ministry.
The state government, it was gathered, also added that by the move, it was not foreclosing further reabsorbing of other doctors, who also haveapplied to be reabsorbed.
Meanwhile, a new twist emerged Monday as the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) issued the Federal Governmenta two-week ultimatum within which it should prevail on the state government to recall the 788 medical doctors or face an indefinite strike.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said Fashola had accepted its offer to intervene in talks between the state government and the medical doctors.
The NARD, in a communiqué jointly signed by its President, Dr. Chiedozie Achonwa and Acting Secretary General, Dr. Usman Galadima, after its ordinary general meeting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, and read to journalists in Abuja, said it had already directed its members nationwide to proceed on a three-day warning strike scheduled for May 31 to June 2,
Achonwa said: “NARD thereforeresolved to perfect its mandateby giving the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum commencing from May 28 (yesterday) to prevail on the Lagos State governmentto recall the Doctors and implement earlier agreements or face an indefinite nationwidestrike in solidarity with our colleagues.”
On its part, NLC’s Head of Information/Publicity, Chris Uyot, said in a statement issued in Abuja, yesterday that contact had already been established between the NLC President, Comrade Abdulwahed Omar and the state Governor.
He stated that the governor had assured the union of his willingness to accept the intervention.
NLC said the crisis could still besolved if all parties in the dispute were willing to embrace dialogue and considerthe interests of the people in Lagos State as well as respect relevant national labour laws and conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
It added that the strike continued to hold dire consequences for the majority of patients who have been denied access to medical services.
In another development, the NLC has joined the Trade UnionCongress (TUC), to kick against the proposed increase in electricity tariff slated for this week, saying such increase should only be contemplated when there is an improvement in electricity supply.
Omar, who disclosed this in a statement, said the move was insensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers and the masses.
According to him, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) which ruled a year ago that meter maintenance fee was illegal has not taken steps to ensure that consumers receive a refund of the monies that were paid as maintenance fee, and has not lived up to its promise to provide pre-paid meters to all Nigerians.
“The position of NERC that the sector requires substantial increase in tariff for investmentto be possible is not tenable; sois the assurance that the working poor and rural poor would not be adversely affected by the increase. Experience has shown that deregulation has never benefited the Nigerian poor. Rather, the corporate class ripsoff the people,” Omar said in the statement.
The NLC chief also disagreed with claims by NERC that it has done a thorough job to sensitize Nigerians about the new tariffs, noting that many still remain confused about the tariff regime and its impact on their lives.
Not even workers and their unions in the PHCN have been consulted, Omar added.
“We reiterate our view that given the sleaze in the sector a few years ago, and the poor services underscored by epileptic power supply as well as capacity deficit of regulators, the rational step should be to improve power supply and distribution capacitybefore a contemplated tariff review,” he said.
Meanwhile, ASUU’s National President, Ukachukwu Awuzie, at a press conference in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, frowned on the state government’s decision to sack the doctors, who were exercising their fundamental human right as enabled by boththe constitution of the land as well as labour law.
According to him, the sack of the doctors was irrational and urged Fashola to come down from the high horse and face the reality by announcing to Lagosians and all Nigerians the commitment of government to implementing CONMESS as earlier agreed with the NMA.
“We do not see the rationality in sacking 788 doctors in any society, especially in Nigeria and Lagos State in particular which has less than 10 per centof the doctors that it needs. The flexing of power is irrational and in this case also detrimental to the well-being ofthe people, government is elected to serve.
“For the sake of God and humanity, the government of Lagos State should come down from its high horse and face thereality that it’s so called ad hocrecruitment of doctors would not solve the problem nor will the government be able to replace these doctors with foreign ones as they cannot pay them,” Awuzie said.
The ASUU chief who noted that the present stance of the LagosState government "falls short ofpremium concern for life”, vowed, “this shall be reversed. It does not portray the government as concerned with the health and well-being of an average Lagosian.”
Describing the press briefing asthe first step in the mediation of the union in the lingering crisis, the ASUU boss explained that it would watch the government for sometime before it takes further action which he said would be based on deliberation by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union at its pre-delegate conference meeting holding in Abuja this weekend.
The ASUU president charged Lagos State government to recall all doctors sacked for participating in the current strike and undertake to refrain from victimizing any doctor for participating in the on-going strike.
He insisted that Nigerian doctors are patriots and should not be treated like villains, saying: “The government should recall the doctors while discussion on any grey area could be handled thereafter. This is the only wise and reasonable thing to do now, wemust put aside our ego and do that which is for the greater good of our people and Lagosians in particular.”

PoliticsRe: Democracy Day Church Service: GEJ Refuse To Say "Amen" To Anti-corruption Prayer by chuks49(m): 8:36am On May 28, 2012
Kudos to Rev. Peter Akinola, his contemporaries wouldn't have hesitated to rain down heavens blessing on President Jonathan.
PoliticsJonathan, Ministers, Decline To Say "Amen" To Prayer Against Corruption by chuks49(op): 8:23am On May 28, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan, governors, ministers and top government officials on Sunday failed to demonstrate a public commitment to the fight against corruption.

At the interdenominational church service held at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2012 National Democracy Day, the guest preacher and immediate past Prelate of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Peter Akinola, in his sermon, challenged the congregation to join him in the fight against corruption in the country by committing perpetrators to God.

But the congregation, including the President, who was accompanied by his wife, Patience, the Governor of Bayelsa, Seriake Dickson and Kaduna, Patrick Yakowa, Deputy Governor of Nasarawa state, Dameshi Luka, as well as some ministers failed to respond to prayers to take corrupt officials “to the court of God.”

Apparently, expecting to hear a thunderous YES or AMEN from the congregation, the Reverend, who instead got a deafening silence, exclaimed: “There you go! Oh, corruption! So, you are not ready to fight it, because you are all beneficiaries of it. Whether you steal in a small or big way, stealing is stealing."

Apparently disappointed with the response he got, the clergyman shot angrily at Mr. Jonathan and his delegation, “See, it is very clear. You are not interested in fighting corruption. If you do, let us take our case to the court of God, if you dare. Who is deceiving who? You are only deceiving yourselves, not God. And you who is stealing government funds, subjecting the poor to untold hardship; you who steal oil subsidy money, making Nigerians pay for fuel through their noses; you who steal funds meant for improving our power supply, deliberately making Nigerians live a life in utter darkness, will you repent today? I doubt it!"

Before throwing the challenge at the president and other officials at the Service, Mr. Akinola had delivered a homily on the destructive impact of corruption on Nigeria.

“This hydra headed monster (of corruption) has literarily taken over the soul and eaten up the fabric of Nigeria,” Reverend Akinola said. “Officials steal our public funds openly by the pen, while others steal by the power of the gun. Successive governments have declared half-hearted war against corruption to no avail. We know only too well that the fight against corruption is largely selective directed at those opposing the government, with no strong political connection.

“Many of those fighting it (corruption) in police and Judiciary have no clean hands. When any National Assembly Committee or any government agency is inviting anybody for questioning it is because those being investigated have not yet given the agency inviting it their due share of the booty.

“Worse still, those who have cleverly made away with public funds and are living above their legitimate incomes are those who are being honoured by traditional rulers, who make them chiefs and high chiefs. Recently, our universities have joined the queue by inviting those people and giving them some baseless honorary doctorate degrees.Sadly, therefore, corruption will continue in full gear, because Nigerians and the government only pay lip service to its eradication. But, I believed as a Christian, as a preacher, as one who reads the Bible, there a way out."

He continued, “Corruption in a narrow sense is another name for stealing. Stealing is a sin God commands us all not to commit. As you know every soul that sins and fails to repent shall die in his sin and end up in hell. So, let us resolve here today to take to the court of God, beginning from this place, all those thieves, who have failed to repent. Will you join me?

“You who steal the money for road construction, leaving our roads in a state of disrepair, causing several accidents and untimely deaths of thousands of our people, their blood is crying to the creator. You who steal the money earmarked for healthcare delivery, thereby running down and turning our hospitals into mortuaries; you who have destroyed our educational system, because the money meant for schools never got to them; you who make laws to inflate costs included in the budget, are you listening to me?

“All of you, whoever you are, greedy, arrogant politicians and officials who are in government only for what you can steal from it and virtually nothing to contribute to national development and has turned Nigeria into a wretch, repent today, and make reparations and God will have mercy on you. Don’t say Amen, only if you repent.

“It is true that ICPC, EFCC, the Police, judiciary may not catch you stealing. But believe me, the all-seeing, all-knowing, all-wise and the almighty God sees you very clearly. But, He is patiently waiting for you to return to the path of sanity and righteousness.”

In his speech, President Jonathan did not react to the issues raised by the preacher, who also proffered a proposal for a new Nigeria.

The president, who identified terrorism as a major challenge the country is currently facing, said with the prayers of Nigerians and commitment of government, “we will overcome”.

“We are working very hard to reposition our security architecture to cope with the modern challenge of terror. We will overcome,” he said. “Even though some people are predicting the disintegration of Nigeria, let me assure Nigerians that Nigeria will never disintegrate. Our forefathers worked hard to bring us together as a nation. Because of the country’s potentials and resources, no one individual or group can create problems that can disintegrate this country.”

What has free and fair election got to do with "Dogs and Baboons soaked in blood". This son of satan is preparing his supporters for another round of blood letting come 2015 because it appears that the blood of innocent corps members killed in the post 2011 general election wasn't enough for them.
PoliticsDog And Baboon Democrat by chuks49(op): 6:54am On May 25, 2012
By Ochereome Nnanna
GENERAL Muhammadu Buhari, long after he is gone, will be remembered by two profound statements he made while alive. The first is this: “The present and future generation of Nigerians have no other country than Nigeria.
We must stay here and salvage it together”. He made this statement in 1984 when he was a military head of statewho overthrew a democratic regime. His austere regime occasioned a massive brain drain when many Nigerians started trooping abroad for greener pasture.
The second was made when a group of Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, loyalists from Niger State paid him a visit in his Kaduna residence recently. He was quoted in the media as saying: “God willing by 2015, something will happen. They either conduct a free and fair election or they go a very disgraceful way.
If what (happened) in 2011 should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood”.
Coming exactly a year after the 2011 general elections when his supporters killed many innocent Nigerians in theNorth, including some members of the National YouthService Corps, NYSC, mainly Christians from Southern Nigeria, this statement must rank as the most irresponsible ever made by a political leaderin this country. Unfortunately, the Action Congress of Nigeria,ACN, has cleared Buhari of wrongdoing, saying it was merely a warning that the nextelections should be free and fair. Surely, there are many more responsible and effectiveways of passing the message? How do Buhari and his supporters in the ACN, CPC andthe Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, expect the parents of the slain NYSC members to feel after reading a statement that effectively says Buhari has no regrets for what his supporters did?
After nearly 10 years of active partisan politics, it is increasingly clearer that Buhariis not psychologically preparedto carry out the necessary adjustments that will make hima successful democrat. He is very experienced, and many people believe he has the capacity to bring about changeneeded in the system. The question is: How does he get into the presidency, since he has shown he cannot win elections and is not prepared to do so?
It is a job you cannot get through appointment or coup. You need votes to get there. How does Buhari get the votes? And why is he not doingthe things he needs to do in order to get the votes? And what are the things he is not doing?
Number one: He is not up to the off-season politicking that will earn him relevance. Immediately after the polls andhis usual legal pursuits he goeshome and is not heard of againuntil the next election. And yet, many opportunities exist during the off-season period for him to show Nigerians he isthe leader they should have in the State House. How many times has he expressed an opinion on the economy? Power generation? Ways out offuel imports? Ways of bringing the Boko Haram insurgency to an end?
Why did he not attend the
Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu burial with a large delegation of his party chieftains and make a nice speech to show his personal reconciliation witha man he battled on the war front 45 years ago? Does he think that the role which President Jonathan played in the state burial of the hero of the Igbo nation will be forgotten in 2015? Does he think his continued exclusion ofthe South East, South-South and North Central from his political calculations is something for which he will be rewarded with votes from these areas in 2015?
Number two: When was the last time Buhari wore an Igbo, South South or Yoruba attire topublic function? Why is he always making his most profound political statements in Hausa? Why are there no interactions between him and prominent politicians, businessmen and leaders from anywhere else apart from the North East and North West? During the previous elections he hardly campaigned outside the North. On the other hand, his opponents, Obasanjo, Yar’ Adua and Jonathan swept the entire landscape over and again campaigning.
We have heard Buhari’s threat about bloody dogs and baboons. It will be a foolish parent who will allow his child to do his/her NYSC in Arewa North in 2015. Those who are forewarned are fore-armed. When Buhari’s al Majiri army hits the streets in 2015, we hope Buhari, his children and relations will be at the forefront. We hope it will no longer be the children of the downtrodden who will kill and die for him. The earlier that Buhari realises that he, not external forces, is responsible for his series of electoral defeats, the better for him and the would-be victims of his dogs and baboons democracy.
