HealthShould There Be Deaf Doctors? by chuks87(op): 8:13am On Jun 27, 2015
i asked dis question back on facebook and i was astonished on the kind of criticisms i received which fortunately, wasn't posted directly on my facebook wall, but in all honesty should there really be a deaf doctor? pls dnt get infuriated by it, it is a normal question anyone with you inclusive could ask and not based on self pity or otherwise...if you can query any of our friends close to us, they will tell u that we (the deaf) enjoy watching movies, playing music, sing, make n receive phone calls! (i knw u ll ask how is that possible?,)
now, back to the matter should there really be a deaf doctor? pls, take time to ready my comprehension and "answer d question that follows"....
i checked in at an ENT (Ear, Nose, and throat) clinic for a doctor appointment... i ran into an old friend who is deaf n dumb. been ASL deficient, i had quickly recount d few basic ASL (American Sign language) i learnt from watching the movie "Switched @ Birth" and manage to muster the few basic ASl like "how u" "hope all good "nice to met ya" .... he smiled (though in my mind i guess he was only mocking me) @ d end of every single gestures i made and i was lucky not to step on his toes, thinking i am gay, wen i signed "i love you" in place of "been a while, missed you"...to cut short d epistle, he left and i made way for my doctor's office...
Along the way, a lady who we noticed earlier that have been rushed in on emergency and now on drip gesticulated @ me to come. with her other free hand, she started mesmerizing me with her ASL grammar like Hon Patrick obiagbon murdering english , moving her hands up, down, left and right like a sunday school choirmaster and i was like waoh ...easy...hold on...i quickly grabbed a nearby pencil on the desk and use the back of my printed report to make her write as i feel i gotta need a human subtitle machine to enable me decipher what she tryna say via her hands....
why trying to write with her non-dominant left hand the tip of the person broke and we were stuck wt no where.
from d look of her face, i understand that she wanna tell me something and it is an emergency and neither of her siblings could help matters either...
left wt no choice, i had to made her go through additional stress by making her to sign every sentence letter by letter! and from there i was able to deduce that though she was admitted on epileptic grounds, she is also pregnant and so d nurse should know d kind of drugs to administer so as not to harm and her unborn baby and as well complicate her health issue. while, i was still compiling d hand speaking language, d nurse has already ready her syringe for injection but after telling her (the Nurse), she had to terminate operation and an alternative medical care was provided...
after i left i began to wonder... why no deaf doctors? Doctors who can speak their "language, communicate and understand them effectively rather than rely on basic symptoms and deductions.
so should der b deaf doctors?

PoliticsBuhari Expected To Keep Oil Portfolio For Himself In New Nigeria Cabinet by chuks87(op): 10:50am On Jun 03, 2015
By Julia Payne

ABUJA (Reuters) - President Muhammadu Buhari is likely to keep the oil portfolio for himself in the new Nigerian cabinet, rather than trust anyone else with the source of most of Nigeria's revenue and traditional fount of corruption, associates say.

Nigeria’s oil sector is so dirty that nobody’s hands are clean enough to do the “surgical changes” needed, one long-standing associate told Reuters on condition of anonymity because the cabinet decision is still under wraps.

Another political associate said: “He will do it. It would be stupid to give that position to anyone else.”

The first source said Buhari has still not settled on his cabinet and has laughed off media speculation about figures he will appoint, joking with friends as he read out a newspaper article that mentioned possible names: "They have picked my ministers for me! Have I even told you who I want?"

A former general who ruled Nigeria 30 years ago, Buhari has extensive knowledge of the oil sector, having been head of the Petroleum Trust Fund under military ruler Sani Abacha in the 1990s and oil minister in the 1970s under Olusegun Obasanjo.

He was voted in by Nigerians on an anti-corruption platform after years in which graft appeared to worsen under the leadership of his predecessor Goodluck Jonathan.

Buhari sent a list of 15 special advisors to the outgoing national assembly for approval on Tuesday, but the cabinet is unlikely to be publicly revealed until the end of July or early August.

The senate, which must confirm the cabinet, will convene only briefly on June 9 before its members are expected to go on recess for up to six weeks.

“It’s going to be a lean government, I doubt he’ll have 42 ministries like Jonathan but he must have at least 36 (for the number of states) as prescribed by the constitution, though it does not specify whether they have to be senior or junior,” an advisor in the ruling APC party told Reuters.

The new administration had not yet gone through reports on Jonathan's handover notes on policy, the advisor said.

"There is a huge body of proposals being bandied around the place," the advisor said, adding that nothing beyond broad strokes had been outlined.

TASK AHEAD IN THE OIL SECTOR

Jonathan has left Buhari with a cash-strapped government, with a rainy-day fund so depleted that it must borrow just to cover salaries.

The government relies on oil sales for the bulk of its revenues but there has been little oversight on how these are handled. Former central bank governor Lamido Sanusi was sacked under Jonathan after he declared that some $20 billion in oil revenues were missing between 2012 and 2013.

The dealings inside the state owned company NNPC are so opaque that PriceWaterhouseCoopers, commissioned to do a forensic audit over the missing funds, said it was unable to obtain enough account documentation.

Not only is oil money stolen through accounting gymnastics and oversight gaps, but oil itself goes missing at unmetered oilfield well heads, pipeline taps and export terminals.

Pipeline protection and coastal inspection contracts have been given to ex-militants of the oil-producing delta who kidnapped foreign oil workers and blew up key infrastructure until a 2009 amnesty. Buhari plans to let the 60 billion naira-a-year amnesty programme end in December as scheduled to save money and it is unclear what he will fund in its place.

The new leader has also made clear that he wants to revamp Nigeria’s refining sector, which declined while the country became dependent on imports for fuel.

“He’s emotionally attached to the refineries because he built some of them. He wants them to start functioning again,” the APC source said

BusinessNigeria Fuel Crisis Could Shut Down Mobile Phones, Operator Warns by chuks87(op): 11:22am On May 25, 2015
Nigeria's biggest mobile phone operator MTN has warned that its network faces shutdown due to fuel shortages that have crippled the nation.

The company, the biggest subsidiary of the South Africa-based MTN Group, said it needed a "significant quantity of diesel in the very near future to prevent a shutdown of services across Nigeria".

"If diesel supplies are not received within the next 24 hours the network will be seriously degraded and customers will feel the impact," it added on its Twitter account @MTNNG on Saturday evening.

Nigeria -- Africa's biggest economy and most populous nation -- has been increasingly hit by fuel shortages in recent weeks because of a long-running row over controversial subsidy payments.

Despite being Africa's biggest oil producer, Nigeria lacks domestic refineries, forcing crude to be exported and products such as petrol and diesel to be imported.

To keep costs to consumers low, the government sets prices below the market rate and pays the difference to importers.

But the global slump in oil prices has hit Nigeria's economy hard, squeezing government revenues and devaluing the local naira currency against the US dollar, and oil marketers claim they have not been paid in full.

Fuel depots have closed pending payment of the arrears, with the situation worsening after oil and gas union workers walked out over the sale of two oil blocks.

The crisis comes just days before President Goodluck Jonathan leaves office, handing over power to Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

Many petrol stations have now run out of fuel, both for vehicles and the generators on which most people and businesses rely because of the woeful public electricity supply.

On Friday, the Ministry of Power said electricity production was at an all-time low of 1,327 megawatts, according to local media reports.

Diesel generators power most of MTN's base stations and switches across the country but fuel supplies are running low, said the company's corporate services executive Akinwale Goodluck.

- Businesses hit -

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry earlier this week warned the crisis could force firms to lay off staff.

The warning from MTN, which has more than 55 million subscribers, is a sign that businesses are now being hit.

Some domestic flights have been cancelled while international airlines have re-routed services in and out of Nigeria to pick up aviation fuel.

Virgin Atlantic flights from Lagos to London Heathrow have diverted to Ghana's capital Accra and Majorca off southern Spain, while Air France services from Paris have stopped in Dakar, passengers said.

At least three Nigerian radio stations announced on Twitter they would be going off the air to ration fuel that powers its generators.

On Twitter, one user said on Sunday his local church had merged its Yoruba-language and English services because of the fuel shortage.

"Don't bother to bring your charger to church, we have disconnected all the plugs," read the note, which was signed: "Yours in Christ."

Elsewhere Nigerians were facing up to the shortages with customary good humour.

"Boko haram attacked Nigerian Army Base but instead of fleeing in their vans, they surrendered peacefully cos #AintNobodyGotFuelForThat," one Twitter user wrote.

But many blamed Jonathan for doing nothing to alleviate the crisis, which began before the March 28 election that Buhari won.

Oil importers and marketers claim they were owed 200 billion naira ($1 billion, 910 million euros) in outstanding subsidies.

Last month, outgoing Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who has said the subsidy scheme is open to corruption, said fuel importers were paid 156 billion naira.

She accused them of engineering the crisis to make money out of blackmarket fuel sales.

CrimeSenator-elect Wanted For US Drug Deal Arrested by chuks87(op): 11:09am On May 25, 2015
LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian drug agents on Saturday arrested a senator-elect wanted by the United States in a nearly 20-year-old heroin deal that was allegedly the basis for the TV hit "Orange Is The New Black."

Buruji Kashamu is under house arrest at his Lagos home, spokesman Ofoyeju Mitchell of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency told The Associated Press. He said Kashamu, 56, will appear in court Monday to start extradition proceedings to the United States.

Kashamu had already been suing a Nigerian court to prevent attempts to extradite him.

Kashamu had become a powerful politician and financier of President Goodluck Jonathan's party. Jonathan and his party both lost in the March election but Kashamu was elected a senator in balloting opponents said was rigged.

Kashamu has said the 1998 indictment by a grand jury in Chicago for conspiracy to import and distribute heroin in the U.S. is a case of mistaken identity. He said prosecutors really want the dead brother he closely resembles.

His lawyers called Saturday's house arrest a political conspiracy.

"This latest onslaught is a confirmation of the alleged plot to illegally abduct him in spite of the pending suit against this illegality," Kashamu spokesman Austin Oniyokor said.

At the time of his lawsuit, the United States had not filed an extradition request. It was not clear when one was filed, but Mitchell said that was the reason for Saturday's action.

The move comes days before Jonathan is to step down and President-elect Muhammadu Buhari takes office on Friday.

A previous request to extradite Kashamu from Britain failed in 2003. Kashamu spent five years in a British jail before he was freed over uncertainty about his identity. He was carrying $230,000 when he was arrested there.

A dozen people long ago pleaded guilty in the case, including American Piper Kerman, whose memoir was adapted for the Netflix hit "Orange Is The New Black." Kerman's book never identified Kashamu by name, only citing a West African drug kingpin.

SportsReal Madrid And Arsenal Drop Into Pot Two Of Champions League Seedings by chuks87(op): 10:58am On May 18, 2015
Barcelona's La Liga title victory means Carlo
Ancelotti's side will fall out of pot one for the first
time in five years, while Arsenal and Manchester
United will join them.
Real Madrid will be in pot two of the Champions
League group stage draw for the first time since
2010-11 thanks to their failure to win the
competition or La Liga this term, and will be joined
by Arsenal and Manchester United.
Carlo Ancelotti's side failed to defend their European
crown, with Juventus eliminating them 3-2 on
aggregate at the semi-final stage in midweek, and
have subsequently dropped down a pot, joining the
Gunners and Louis van Gaal's side.
Both Premier League sides have confirmed their
places in the top-four this season but, on current
league positions, are set to finish below Chelsea
and Manchester City, with Jose Mourinho's side
listed in pot one, while United are set to face a
play-off to qualify for the group stages.
In previous years, the pots were decided by each
team's coefficient ranking but the governing body
has ruled that winners of the top seven leagues and
the European champions will now fill pot one.
As Juventus and Barcelona, the two Champions
League finalists, have already won their domestic
titles, one spot will be granted to the Eredivisie - the
eighth-ranked league in 2013-14.
The drop means Madrid could end up facing the
likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus or Paris
Saint-Germain in the group stages next season.
Other pot one regulars who will have to make do
with a place in pot two include Atletico Madrid and
Porto.
The final for the 2015-16 Champions League takes
place at San Siro in Milan on May 28.
Pot one (confirmed): Barcelona, Bayern Munich,
Chelsea, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica,
Zenit, PSV. Pot two (on current league positions): Real Madrid, Atletico, Manchester United*, Porto, Arsenal, Valencia*, Bayer Leverkusen*, Man City (*must play qualifying round)

SportsNigerian Billionaire Aliko Dangote Still Keen On Arsenal Takeover by chuks87(op): 9:06am On May 05, 2015
The 58-year-old, Africa's richest man, failed in a
bid to buy the Gunners in 2010 and says that he will
concentrate on his own business before submitting
a new offer.
African billionaire Aliko Dangote admits that he
remains keen on buying Arsenal.
The 58-year-old Nigerian, who is worth an
estimated £10.3 billion - which makes him Africa's
richest man - explored the possibility of purchasing
the club in 2010 but his approach was rejected.
"I still hope, one day at the right price, that I'll buy
the team," Dangote told Bloomberg Business . "I
might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that
the owners won't want to resist. I know my
strategy."
Dangote, who has made his fortune through various
operations including cement manufacturing, sugar
supply and oil investments, says that he will
concentrate on expanding his own business before
launching a new offer for Arsenal.
“We have $16bn-worth [£10.5bn] of investments in
the next few years. Right now I want to take my
own business to a certain level. Once I finish on that trajectory, then maybe [an offer will follow]," he continued. Dangote is an Arsenal fan but has criticised Arsene Wenger, claiming that the 65-year-old "needs to change his style a bit" and warning that the club "need new direction".
