SOLDIER ON THE RUN (Ottava rima)

A soldier, a patriot, a clarion call
Heeded from the barrack of bravery
To the fanatical fray that may doom them all
Wielding AK-47 and other accouterments; wizardry,
Marching through the morasses of a desert-forest; the gall
Of those broken plants of mingled weeds clung his boots,-weary,
Snakes, insects and toads all begged him to stop, but he protested
As the badge of honour shrouds his fears - the ones he once jested

Boom!!! The earth he stood danced in terror's craze
His platoon plunged into plangent plaints
As more ballistic balls drops, smokes leaped into streaming haze,
His gun coughed far into the chaotic carnival to taint
The enemy with death's pellet or completely raze... -
His bullets suddenly jammed and a reciprocal sends him faint
And they came in their kerosene numbers and took him away
Chanting in semitic language, the greatness of thee throughout the day

He woke up behind an Arabized insignia and
A cameraman finding delight with his sight
As numbingly the tinges of fear gagged his lip and hands,
A chewing stick man rumpled by bloated zealotry shared his plight
Spitting aspersions while wielding a machine gun like a magic wand
And another sprouts out with a rocket for hunting kites
Extends a dagger in a friendly handshake to the other
And swaggered off, making mockery of other's weapon at the corner

A gently push sends him to the ground
Amidst his murderer's face he froze him with a stare
He refused to flinch by swallowing all painful sounds
His last bubble of thought burst in flares;
Life's juice gushes out like a leaked water pipe on the ground
Yet the soldier's gaze clung to the other in hazy stares
Till the neck gave up its patriotic head
And an eulogistic song was sang around the dead.
Can I get an autograph please?
So I would capably release
My enthusiasm and seize
This moment that I wish would freeze.

I've tried so hard to summon courage when certain challenges surface, it just doesn't work. I hate physical brawls, maybe because I am not all muscled and stuff. Had a recent near fight encounter, couldn't follow through; thus this poem...

My friend, great nemesis
Why don't fools feel its vibe?
The brave ones are warriors
Feeble hearts, empty caskets

It flees at the sight of the brave
Joy it has at the sight of me
Like jungle apes our romance is fierce
Peacefully fierce, our sojourn ends not

The thuds of my tiptoe
Heard across the continent
Light feet brains of light
Fearlessly fearful, my heart jumps

The adrenaline rush comes
Easily to me, negatively to me
My shell is large enough
I reside within, not without

Though reasons be in millions
My anger scuttles away in fear
Chained, held by un-seen hands
Voices within declare I am a coward

Well written poem. I love it!
In verse 2, try changing to, "In your firm grip I am a puppet" ..... "your kisses are sweet sour strawberry/that kneel my feeble feet before your dominating heart"

I think this brings out better imagery and the use of some words like 'puppet' shows that your addiction controls you and you have no power over its 'dominating heart'. Heart signifies love between you and your addiction as you portray the poem.
Also the oxymoron used, 'sweet sour' shows that you enjoy what you despise, but you can't help it. You will also notice the alliteration employed, 'sweet sour strawberry' it aids the flow. (Timparker knows this better).

Do some more revisions. I love your poems!

God bless you, sir

This tries to depict my fight with my addiction, quite a few actually. Today, I have dumped them. It wasn't easy, but nothing worth much is. I purposely left out the title. If you get this poem's message, you can give it a title. Thanks much.

The world is filled with people who are addicted to one thing or the other. I could remember years ago, while I struggled to quit sucking my navel. It was war, I say. Some of us are still struggling with something, that thing we don't do in public but in secret. We hate it, but we can't help it. To you this poem is dedicated.

My love and dear friend
I will follow you, it's the trend
In secret we interwine
In view of opticals, we disband

Momentarily, though my joy
In your grip I am like a toy
Your kisses like ripe strawberry
My feet are feeble when I stand before you

My love for you is strong
Our romance would last long
My eyes are misty
Your hands should be around me

Why doesn't my gain endure?
I am devoted to you for sure
Momentarily my joy I say
Hours I spend to gain that little

You cheat on me with impunity
I cling to your supposed purity
Brain spins, heart sparks
I can now see effects of loving you

Resolved I am to quit
Yet I achieve not this feat
My legs are chained
Blame them, they walked into you

Bang the adverse hits me harder
Misty eyes I would not go further
Determind I am, though I fail
One day I would be free

Free to roam the streets of life
Sure not to be your wife
Relieve resides always in me now
Cos with fierceness I fight

I fight to keep my sanity
Yeah, to prevent insanity
One day I would win the fight
Today, I have won

True? This is probably the reason why few students were admitted on the merit list. This does not in any way affect the supplementary application, does it? That is, would pre degree students be considered for even the left over courses?

great piece I must say. Like tex said, just focus on making a good poem. Poetry forms does not. However, it might interest you to know that what you have there is a form known as Dramatic Monologue, cuz you're using a character in fiction or in solo mode (pardon me, I'm too lazy to spell sololoqui, you know that moment when you just talk and lament on your ownhuh)
to deliver a lengthy speech explaining a feeling, action, or motive. grin. Great job!
Okay, dramatic monologue. That has been written down cheesy

Touching story. I don't review poetry but this is good. And since you're writing from her point of view shouldn't "her voice" in the third stanza be "my voice"?

Out cast free verse

Eyes tight, shut tight
Pain runs through my veins
Anger dances in my heart
Fear numbs my fingers
I mix them all

The verdict came on his own
My family gone I am all alone
Solitarily I walk now
No one to talk to or share my pain
Joy has left me

Leave I must or
Die I would but
My innocence speaks not
Her voice drowned by a thousand
voices screaming in unity, leave

Go, go, go, it echoes over again
My greetings hit the wall
Splash it sounds on my face
Spits I take, insults I embrace.
Fabrics torn out by once comrades

My well of tears has dried up
My stream of pain has overflowed
Fruits from my bowels fail to cheer me up
They are not innocent
They would suffer same fate

Worse it gets, wet head rest
God- unto you do I cry
My fore bears knew thee not
But I do, I do
Lovin' you I did, did not I?
Why the curse on me
The curse of an outcast

Few years ago, a woman was married into our family. She was a lovely jovial woman, fun to be with and all of that. But then it was discovered that her fore bears were "osu". In Igboland an osu is someone who was dedicated to the gods, after this dedication, usually done if the person involved committed a terrible crime beyond normal forgiveness by the gods. This person and his family are sent out. They live close to the shrine. They and their descendants cease to have any sort of communication with the other free people. Not minding the advent of christianity- this believe though severely reduced still holds sway. As an igbo man or woman. You would not be allowed to marry an osu. Though you may interact with them. I am personally against this believe. As it sounds totally hypocritic that someone who claims to be a christian would tag a fellow human with such a despicable name.

Now this woman I talked about had children, but she had to leave with them. They were not allowed to come back and they held no grounds in their father's compound. She cried and begged, but they didn't heed. I remembered this incident yesterday so I wrote a poem about it.
