The Nation God chose is of the line of Abraham and Isaac, is it not? Now in order to make it clear that it is Jacob that was chosen and not Esau, from that same exact line, God made it such that Edom could not a successful people become. Do the people of Edom still exist? Probably, but a successful nation of their own, they cannot become - Edom probably remains tucked away within tribes among several nations to this day. All this so they do not in any way overshadow the one God chose for His plan.

Was it Esau's evil that led to Edom being rejected by God? No! God simply chose Jacob, a devious one at that, for His plan and that is simply it.

Before you go envying Israel, you need to first understand that God did not choose Israel for His "inheritance" in the land of men out of love for Israel, the people, nor did God expect the people to somehow obey Him or do as He commands. God chose to use Jacob to build for Himself a Nation from, a people of God to serve God forever and rule over all other Nations with.
God's choosing of Jacob over Esau does not mean God literally hated the man called Esau. Instead, God wanted a Nation of the blood of Abraham and Isaac, but He didn't want it to be of the line of Esau but of Jacob.

There are other nations, asides Israel, that God has less preference for and they were all left to be, why should Edom be any different?
