Onitsha market was not adjudges the biggest because of its size but because of the huge monetary traffic/volumes and items. Ask any banker in Onitsha, the volume of money they are witnessed on daily basis that will give you a clue of huge population that troops into Onitsha to do one transaction or the other. So as you can see this discourse is for bright minds and it has gone scientific, you can't contribute any meaningful thing here for now |
Another small piece of evidence http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/news/article14//indexn3_html?pdate=191209&ptitle=Nigerians In Diaspora Remit $1.7 billion Home Yearly&cpdate=191209 Nigerians In Diaspora Remit $1.7 billion Home Yearly From Simeon Nwakaudu, Makurdi NIGERIANS in the Diaspora remit over $1.7 billion yearly to family members and friends at home, an avenue of finance that can be exploited by the Federal Government for national development. This disclosure was made by Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas, Austin, United States (U.S.), during a public lecture he delivered at the Benue State University, Makurdi on Thursday. Speaking on the topic "Citizens at Home, Citizens Abroad and the Globalisation of Knowledge," Falola declared that Nigerians in the Diaspora make huge remittances that could be translated to the good of the nation annually. Falola, who was invested with the Julius Nyerere Professorial Chair of Modern African History by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Paul Akase Sorkaa, on the same day, disclosed that during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, he suggested the introduction of a Diaspora Tax for Nigerians abroad, especially in the West, as their contribution to national development. However, he stated that such a tax might be impracticable because of the challenges of corruption and the application of resources that may accrue there from. He said: "If the Nigerian Civil War had taken place 20 years after the time it took place, it would have lasted more than three years because the Igbo in United States alone can finance the entire civil war." Falola noted that several countries of the world have taken advantage of their large Diaspora communities to finance development back home, saying that Nigeria should do the same. He stated that the State of Israel came into being and was nurtured into the technological giant it is today through the financial contributions of its Diaspora community in the U.S. Falola also cited the Philippines as a country where highly qualified nurses are trained and sent out to work in other countries and pay Diaspora taxes to their home country for its growth. He regretted that in Africa, the situation is such that highly qualified professionals were trained only for them to migrate to other developed nations, due to harsh economic realities, where they contribute to strengthen the economies of their host countries. The don stated that Africa lost 13 million of its citizens to the developed world through slavery, while the harsh economic realities of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) drove another 15 million to Western countries in the 1980s. Falola said: "I am proposing the practical and academic integration of Africa with its Diaspora citizens in many ways that ideas, goods and people can freely circulate for the upliftment of all so that we can move to the centre of world history." In his remarks, Prof. Sorkaa said the university was moving towards collaborating with the Nigerian intelligentsia in the Diaspora to develop a stronger academic environment that would help the nation.
I will implore you to desist from responding to this yaroba guy who does not seems to comprehend simple english, what figures does he need when all the facts are glaring of decay in the SW. They should start building the middle class just like the SE/SS has done and even the north has since followed the trend. It is only the middle class that can save the SW, if not they will continue sliding until they are no more. Just a look at towns like Ibadan, Akure, Abeokuta will convince anybody that this is a big slum and poverty embedded region. |
nolongTing:You are just arguing blindly, who told you that the Igbos are not trading or investing in the East, where do you have the largest commercial center in entire West Africa, if not Onitsha Anambra state |
But its really a sad one for a governor to rule his state from outside, we all know that infrastructural oshun maybe at the back sit- could be the guys reason for staying away from the state. But he need to live in the state to be able to appreciate the level of decadence and slide in the state. Well thump ACN yaroba party. Dalu nu ndi ofe, |
I understand your plight. I wrote NAPEP to make available the complete data of poverty levels in Nigeria, but typical of Nigerian ALL things, they wont even reply me, even when I used my official email address so they know I am not asking from nowhere. However, of the 10 states listed, SE has 4 (and their are 5 SE states) whiled SW has 3 (and we have 6 SW states), so who is better off on the basis of the available data?
My brother you have finished work, the yarobas are only jabbing. Its quite clear to both goat and cow that SW is merely trailing their northern brothers in poverty line, every available database attests to that fact, while the Igbos -SE has taken over the top rank and middle class positions. |
This yarobas are are gang of myopias in economy discourse. No wonder they have continued to wallow in stark poverty, suffering and keep smiling. When you go to New York, London, Paris even Dubai the mere citing of these cities will tell you how rich and economically vibrant they as against cities as Harare, Lagos, Accra and other 3rd world cities. The same applies to Nigerian states. The view of cities as Onitsha, Enugu, Awka, Owerri, Calabar and even Uyo (SE) as against the yaroba cities of Osogbo, abeokuta, ibadan, akure (SW), you will notices a sharp contrast in these cities, that the SE represents rich and economically vibrant as against the SW states with little or no infrastructure. I remember reading a piece that there is hardly a dual carriage way in the whole of Oshun and Ekeiti states. You also notice that in the entire southern Nigeria it is only in the SW that there are beggars trailing their northern almajriis, you notice that SW state capitals may hardly compete with the local councils head qtrs in the SE and SS. Its still a big question for the SW |
abagoro:Abagworo, you have taken up another username ok. Well I don't blaim you. Owerre and Ibadam has no difference in anything, both are planless without proper environmental organization and coordination. I know that the economic height of Onitsha is always your envy, so keep dying in silence while Onitsha is soaring in strength from Seaport to power plant to sabmiller to many more investors trooping into the town. Owerre for all I care is home to whores/LovePeddlers and otokotos same as Ibadan |
hercules07:You can't possibly say that they are both poor, because even the poorest village in the SE can compete favorably with the type of state capitals you have in the SW. I have been to ondo town, akure, ibadam the story is the same. Its the same mud houses all the way, poor planning. What I saw in the SW is pour linear settlement, where people build houses on the road with proper environmental planning and no good road network. You hardly find one modern building in the whole of akure or ibadan the state capitals. Its not funny |
hercules07:My friend shuttappp. talk about Onitsha the commercial hub of the SE with respect. Onitsha represent New York to Ibadam, akure, abeokuta and other dungeons state capitals in the SW. Even my home town Uga is far more developed and modern that Ibadan not to talk Onitsha. I wonder when you yarobas will start translating your so called education to your environment. You guys pack professors both fake and 'oluwale' all in the name of professorship but yet you guys continue to wallow in deep poverty, you guys continue to live in mud and cranky houses. |
Good moves by our dearie president. GEJ please go further by crippling lagos and SW, they are already poverty ridden I wonder what will happen to the yaroba land in 2015, maybe call tinubu out from the prison to help them. ![]() |
Good war against the yarobas. GEJ swore that lagos must come to its knees before he lives office. |
Its a good move. I think GEJ is moving the right war to the right section. Thump up GEJ |
@ ebere. Its a baseless question bro. Such a facility has the capacity of affecting for good the economic life of the entire south east and south south and even beyond. So in all essence the job creation will be will be inform of chain reaction, alot of job even more than what they projected will be created both skilled and un-skilled of various category. Its a the kind of facilities that seen in US, UK, Dubai etc. Its the first ever facility of such size and magnificence to be built in Nigeria. |

Posted: September 22, 2011 - 20:47 By Citizen Reporter The 20th anniversary for the creation of Delta state may have come and gone which was celebrated on August, 27th, 2011. Deltans both at home and in Diaspora expecting to witness the commissioning of chains of land mark projects which always characterized such celebration were all disappointed this time around; rather they witnessed what will look like a jamboree and show of dramas and comedies in place of commissioning of projects. Oil rich Delta state was created twenty years ago by the administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in August, 27th, 1991 with its capital in Asaba as a way of saying thank you to the people of Asaba where his late wife, Mrs. Mariam Babangida hails from but since Asaba was made the state capital no befitting project whatsoever that can equate it status as in the case of other state capitals across the country where projects that befits a state capital are sited. Since the creation of Delta state it was observed that more attentions have been given to Warri than the state capital, Asaba leaving it in its own shadow of disarray while major roads in the state capital remain death traps and when it rains the entire place will be submerged while residents scamper for lives and property. Briefing the press before the celebration in what looks like a child’s play, the committee chairman, for the 20th Anniversary celebration and commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Richard Mofe Damijo told Journalists at the Press centre, government house, Asaba, that the theme of the anniversary is “DELTA NO DEY CARRY LAST”, this, which was interpreted by so many Deltans as ridiculous, however condemned in strong terms the theme as according to them this also goes to say that in both stealing, killing, bribery, armed robbery, looting, corruption and rituals amongst other social vices, Delta state is always at the fore front. Mr. Damijo flanked by other members of the committee who include, Mr. Christopher Ogeah, (Commissioners of Information), Mrs. Betty Efekodha (Women Affairs), as well as Mr. Ijeoma (Youth and Sports) has this to say “Under the democratic dispensation of the past 12 years, our state has recorded huge leaps forward. The administration of His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has in the past four years further energized the development of the state with his three point agenda.” But very shocking and laughable, as the Information commissioner rolled out the program for the two weeks event, commissioning of projects were deliberately not included because there were non on ground to be commissioned. Apart from thanksgiving/interdenominational services and lecture, the remaining days were billed for dramas and comedies and when the committee chairman was confronted on the amount budgeted for what could be described as Delta at 20 jamboree, he declined comment so also when an SMS was sent to the Information Commissioner, Mr. Ogeah on the amount to be spent on the two weeks event he simply replied “Please the chairman of the committee is the commissioner for Culture and Tourism.” But sources close to the committee however alleged that about N500 million was allegedly earmarked used for the anniversary jamboree. Meanwhile while explaining the elaborate celebration of Delta state at 20 during a recently in a life broadcast at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Asaba, and monitored by this writer, the state commissioner of Information, Mr. Christopher Ogeah maintained that Delta state had made tremendous progress over the years hence the celebration was to showcase the state’s achievements and developmental strides in the last 20 years. He said the state has been putting infrastructure and major projects in place to meet the growing need of the people of the state. According to Ogeah, 10 model schools have been chosen by the state government which would be equipped with state of the art facilities, laboratories and other equipment for modern day learning across the three senatorial districts of the state. Again, the big question is that what has the state government been doing with all the billions accruing the state? It’s a big shame that Delta state at 20 no single project was on ground to commission. For the past four years, the administration of Dr. Uduaghan could not do anything about the roads in the state capital and the flooding problems in Asaba which has remain a nightmare to residents whereby leaving the people to their own fates. In some states created the same day with Delta state such as Anambra and others, celebrated their anniversary with commissioning of projects but as always, in Delta state the reverse was the case. Cross section of Deltans spoken to, noted with dismay that the state has never celebrated its anniversary without commissioning of projects which has been set as a precedent by the Chief James Ibori’s administration. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/delta-state-20-laughable-dramas-comedies-jamboree-place-projects |
Awka: Obi's Job Creation Strategy Sunday, 21 August 2011 12:44 LG WORLD CLASS TECHNICAL ACADEMY AND ELECTRONICS CENTER AWKA - OBI’S JOB CREATION STRATEGY free-hidden-object-games-32Soon great jobs would be offered to Anambra citizens courtesy of Life is Good Electronics (LG Electronics) in partnership with the state government. The duo is establishing a N1.8 Billion ultra modern Life is Good Electronics (LG Electronics) World/ANIDS Technical Academy and Electronics Center . The company would provide direct job offer of over 500 and ancillary jobs of over 3000. The center would have been completed in Awka , Anambra state this June, 2011 but for some hiccups. When the issue of land allocated for the project near Nnamdi Azikiwe University off Government house Awka was to become subject of litigation, the Anambra state government gave them another readymade building known as Limca house opposite SEMA building still along the express way after Tourist Garden Hotels Awka. Work has reached advanced stage for the project take off and commissioning. The Center would not only serve as a world class training center but would house an ultra modern show rooms/ shopping mall for all kinds of electronic products as well as a ware house for distribution when completed. Now, that Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state has reassured that the project is on course and would soon start operations against speculations that the sponsors of the project had deserted Anambra, more jobs hopefully would be created for the unemployed youths. Obi assured that more businesses and investors are coming into Anambra rather like the SABmiller of South-Africa and an Independent Power Plant (IPP). http://enugustatedirect.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=898:awka-obis-job-creation-strategy&catid=1:latest&Itemid=2 |

The Federal Government, yesterday filed additional charges former governor of Lagos state, Bola Ahmed Tinubu for allegedly operating foreign accounts during his eight-year tenure from 1999-2007, in breach of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers. The prosecutor, Alex Izinyon , informed the tribunal that he has motion seeking to amend the earlier one count charges filed against Tinubu on March 22,to be replaced with a fresh three count charge. He said the charge dated March 22 would now be substituted with the motion dated 19 September but filed on 2Oth of Sepember. Wole Olanipekun who led many Senior Advocates of Nigeria and other lawyers, representing Mr. Tinubu, did not object to amendment of the charges, but said he has a preliminary objection as regards the competence of charges and the jurisdiction of the tribunal to try the former governor. He told the tribunal that the court process that was to be served on his client was only dropped somewhere, but that as a law abiding citizen and a respecter of law he had decided to appear before the tribunal when he learnt about the summon. Mr. Izinyon agreed that personal service is necessary in a criminal matter like this pointing out that seeing Tinubu in person is difficult. After, moving motion for the amended charges, Izinyon, said the charges be read to Mr. Tinubu who is in the dock to take his plea. But, Mr. Olanipekun objected to the former governor's taking his plea saying that an accused person cannot take a plea on what he has not seen, stressing that the amended charges was only served on them that day at the Tribunal. Chairman of the tribunal Mohammed Umar, adjourned the matter to October 26 for arraignment of Mr. Tinubu. Good works for Anambra and SE at large |
LG WORLD ANIDS (A Joint Venture Agreement With Anambra State Government) The LG World/ANIDS technical academy and electronics village project is a proposed skill acquisition and electronics trade centre majoring on the LG brand strategically located in the heart of Awka, close to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, it provides answers to the industrial and commercial needs of the eastern part of Nigeria and is set to be the first its kind in the eastern part of Nigeria. Project benefits As part of the efforts of the Government of Anambra State to provide an enabling environment for the growth of enterprise, encourage inflow of foreign investment as well as protect existing ones to stimulate the expansion of the industrial capacity of the economy, the State has developed these investment incentives for investors to the State. The main policy thrust of the Government of Anambra State on investment is to encourage private sector-led industrialization in stimulating the expansion of her domestic production capacity, improve efficient production of goods and services, create employment and promote technology driven development. It is a major policy of government to reduce direct state ownership of enterprises and control over the economy. Arising from this, Government's role will be limited to creating a conducive investment climate for the private sector to flourish. The main attraction in the centre is the LG showroom, it is situated centrally in the core of the facility that you can access it from every corner of the facility and it is an open view that you can see into the showroom from every angle, so while you are using other parts of the facility., the LG display room with the giant screens are beckoning, “come see me”. That is why we described it as a must see. Land and Location The site is located a few Kilometers from the heart of Awka town which is the capital of Anambra State, along the Enugu/Onitsha Express way. It is bounded on two sides by the Enugu Onitsha express road and an access road which is the preferred access into the site as shown on the survey plan. The Academy and electronics centre is a joint venture developer funded facility which will sit in a land space with the total area of the site is approximately 12,000 (twelve thousand square meters) and is irregularly shaped with the longer side along the major express road. The terrain is beautifully landscaped to accommodate a first class development concept for a twenty-first century commercial development. In a development of this nature, the first consideration is always location. The site of this development is, no doubt, one of its most significant strength. Situated in the heart of Awka, and is easily accessible from any part of the city or state. The site terrain is relatively flat and undulating with trees and shrubs scattered around the development provides commercial exposure to every section of the project. The investor and financier will benefit from quick returns on investment as a result of expected high traffic expected from Onitsha, Nnewi, Enugu, Markudi, Aba , Port Harcourt etc. Physical Development The development, which is intended to span a period of eighteen months, is meant to deliver, at completion, the following activity space units. An Ultra modern showroom for display and sale of LG products An LG service centre A Supermarket Lettable Shops A Warehouse facility for LG Products (Large enough to service South Eastern Nigeria) Two banking halls to function independently Two Eateries/Snack bar Games/Kids play area Two Cinema Halls A 200 seater capacity Training Hall Lecture/Meeting Rooms Accommodation Spaces Car park Toilet facility The design concept is such that we have tried to achieve maximum functionality while maintaining a high aesthetic quality without compromising the comfort of all prospective users of the facility. The form of the design is a series of concentric circles, indicative of growth, increase, expansion and dynamism which are key elements to the viability of any business venture. Strategically located are the LG Showroom and the LG service centre which are a ‘must see’ as you get into the facility. The first floor contains facilities for the personal relaxation of the users: Cinema Halls, Games/Kids play area and eateries. The facility is designed such that it is almost completely self sustaining in the sense that the training hall, lecture rooms and accommodation spaces on the second and third floors respectively could be harnessed to bring commercial value to the organisation for the daily running and maintenance of the facility. http://g1international.com/anids.html |
