Politics / ASUU Insists On Continuing Strike In S/east Universities by chyz1: 4:28pm On Nov 03, 2010
ASUU insists on continuing strike in S/East universities

Written by Sam Nwaoko, Awka Wednesday, 03 November 2010

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that it will not back down on the strike by its members in the South-East state universities except the respective state governments implement the agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU in 2009.

National President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, who briefed journalists in Awka, Anambra State, on Tuesday, said this had become imperative as the respective state governments had adopted tricks on the issue.

Professor Awuzie, who addressed newsmen in company with leaders of ASUU from the zone, said the union had also rejected the 50 per cent pay rise and the additional N31 million monthly subvention offered by the Anambra State government to workers in the Anambra State University (ANSU).

According to the ASUU president, the offer by the government of Mr. Peter Obi failed to address the demands of the striking lecturers, pointing out that, “the strike was not to ask for pay rise but to address the critical shortfall of infrastructure and funding of the university."

He said, “this struggle can only escalate in the coming weeks given their present disposition and our members are ready and willing to make whatever sacrifices that are needed to protect the interest of the youth and people of the South-East and the university culture.”

@High Chief

Dede you are entitled to your opinions, all I am saying is it is time to stop playing victim and change the perception of we deserve to lead because we are Igbos. The same people you mentioned in Nafdac or CBN will not win elections in Anambra and that is the problem. Since 1999, every election year all we hear is Ndigbo will strategies for next election, , why not now?

Aba is not the best place to live so is Onitsha and Owerri and I have lived in (not visited) this parts of the country so I know (they are not the worst however). These are places with great potentials in both human and natural resources ore than most places and what have the governors done? As a people, Igbos can do better than this.

Anyone can aspire to be president but we need leaders for this country. Whether Igbo or Gwari, I don't care.

Strategizing is key.All in all, we gotta give the nigerian people want they want.He has to be the best.

Politics / Don’t Sell Oil Fields In Isokoland, Okpozo Warns Shell by chyz1: 2:00am On Nov 03, 2010
Don’t sell oil fields in Isokoland, Okpozo warns Shell

News Nov 3, 2010

By Simon Ebegbulem

BENIN—NIGER Delta leader and Second Republic Senator, Senator Francis Okpozo, yesterday, warned Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, operating in Isokoland, not to sell the marginal field in the area  to avoid crisis between the communities in Isoko in Delta State and the company.

He explained that Shell could only leave the area with its “movable” items and not sell oil fields, which according to him, belong to the communities, adding that it was the agreement reached between the company and the communities in Isokoland in 1959.

Vanguard learnt that  SPDC had perfected plans to sell unproductive fields in Ogini, Deep One, Isoko Deep two and other fields in that category in Isoko, to yet to be identified. Speaking to Vanguard, in Benin City, Senator Okpozo, explained that the agreement Shell entered with Isoko people was on lease hold, adding that it would be unacceptable for Shell to sell the fields, which belonged to the people of the area.

According to him, “we learnt that Shell wants to sell the fields to unknown companies made up of dubious characters, who have worked in Shell in the past with a view to duping the communities and depriving them of their rights.

We are calling on the authorities of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and the Ministry of Petroleum to guard against such fraudulent practices. Shell has only movable objects in our land and if they wish to leave, they should remove only the movable assets on the land and leave the land for the owners.

“It came to our knowledge that because they were troubled in the onshore, where people live, they said they want to dispose of their assets in these areas. Shell has oppressed people who live in the onshore for many years now,” he added.

People there were totally neglected by Shell and not only that, they went as far as to steal the assets of the people, that is the areas of their operation where totally neglected.

“You cannot fish in the rivers, all their products where taken away by Shell. And when there was crisis in the riverine areas, their means of sustenance was the oil and gas production from the on shore because the militants did not extend their actions there.

When they operated in these areas, they refused to do any thing for the owners of the land. If their main cause for leaving the area is because the people said you refuse to do any thing for us, you can pack and go away, then Shell company is callous”

@ Chyz1:
I agree with you on that. But the problem is that the rest of the country still see it as a taboo to have an Igbo man in the helms of affairs.

Imagine: even President Jonathan can't support an Igbo Presidency in 2015! Yet to get the support of Ndigbo he is floating names he have not identified with in decades!

They either support Ndigbo or Nothing and yes Igbos should sound that very loud.

Yea but him and his wife( who is now magically and originally from "Umuahia"wink are lame for those fake Igbo claims tho. You are right for them to support us as fellow countrymen but giving the an all or nothing ultimatum and being loud throwing it in their faces is not the way and will get us nowhere but sink us deeper. What we should be doing now is planning for the worst and MAKING SURE we get the BEST( there will be no more hoping for the best in 2015).

Did your fathers plant oil? Yes or No?

I guess you have now admitted that you know nothing about oil.

Dumb Zap. where in the world is mere stones of no value to anyone listed as a resource to any country or anybody anywhere in the world.

Go arround the world where there is sanity, such resources as crude oil, uranium, gold etc are all treated as a Natural resource belonging to the State no matter on whose soil it is found.

Did his forefather say that your people can drill his land? Yes or No?

Did his forefathers agree to be in this country called nigeria? Yes or No?

And watch you mouth, remember you are the one who attacked first so don't catch feelings when you're insulted back.

It still isn't, and I have little reason to believe that it will be anytime soon, but I guess I'll just have to watch how the next few years turns out. Change happens at a moment's notice, and maybe, in the case of the Igbo, it can be change for the better; maybe.

True and that is the sad thing. I guess something really drastic has to happen first. However, im hoping that's not the case and they can now start becoming pro-active instead the usual. It should not really be about 2015(for the Igbo) but more of what we should be doing internally from now up until then.

shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked wtf. i always thought he was igbo. where is he from and what igbo candidates do we have

Nope. He is Ibibio from Cross River State. As of this moment, for me I would go for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala but she is in U.S. working for World Bank. The others I would choose are Pat Utomi(but he needs to get a little edge to him) or Chibuike Amaechi.

am sorry, but igbos are now claiming t be together with the ss. therefore, i think nigeria might not allow an igbo man to be president. i will still campaign for ndigbo 2015. we need an igbo president. but the question is why do ndigbo not produce a candidate now

The game is too deep as of now so it wouldn't be an appropriate time.

abagworo is right. In the south-south the Ibibios( efik, annang, ekio, Oron and Iben included) are the largest ethnic group.

what ezeuche was trying to say is the SS and SE are together>>> sought off.

and i was telling him that igbos in SS (BAYLESA, RIVERS ETC) are "settlers" in a sense.

understood. however, are you aware of when the south-south region was created? and also, be for state creation how was Igboland determined? Also, was every Igbo area included the 5 SE state? These are questions you musgt ask yourself.

CHYZ1, i think you are wrong. you cannot annex ondo, edo and delta to ND. its not possible. same as abia, it is considered as part of the SE geo-political zone

I did not annex any state into the Niger Delta.Niger Delta is NOT a political region nor a state, it is an area and by definition whether any one agrees or not Ondo, Edo, Delta, Imo,Abia are also in the Niger Delta. It's not my map, it is the nigerian government's.
