http://m.cnet.com/news/megaupload-redo-is-shut-down-even-before-debut/57546132:
We won't find the MegaUpload-replacement service anytime soon at Me.ga.
Kim DotCom, founder of MegaUpload, the cloud storage service accused in an indictment by the United States of being a pirate site and criminal enterprise, said last week that he would launch a new cloud-storage service in January designed to protect it from U.S. law enforcement. DotCom and MegaUpload have denied any wrongdoing.
As part of its defenses, the new site would use the Gabon-based domain .ga instead of the .com domain, DotCom announced. Not so fast, said Blaise Louembe, Gabon's communications minister.
According to the New Zealand publication, Stuff.co.nz , Louembe has instructed that www.me.ga be suspended and said the small West African nation "cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights, nor be used by unscrupulous people."
Ira Rothken, the Silicon Valley attorney who oversees MegaUpload's worldwide defense, confirmed in an interview with CNET that MegaUpload's successor site will not be available at Me.ga. But Rothken added that the new service is still on its way.
"The [new] site is not even functional yet," Rothken said. "MegaUpload and Kim are innocent and presumed innocent. It sounds like a lack of net neutrality in Gabon...We're just going to use a different domain."
There's a cat-and-mouse game going on between the United States and MegaUpload. MegaUpload was once one of the largest video destinations in the world before U.S. officials shut the site down in January and requested that New Zealand law enforcement arrest DotCom.
The United States is trying to extradite DotCom, but while that process plays out in the courts, the MegaUpload founder readies a new storage service.

PhonesApple Walloped With $368M In Damages In Virnetx Patent Suit by ciphoenix(op): 7:35am On Nov 07, 2012
http://m.cnet.com/news/apple-walloped-with-$368m-in-damages-in-virnetx-patent-suit/57546137:
A Texas court ordered Apple to pay $368.2 million in damages to the patent holding and security software company VirnetX today. According to Bloomberg , which broadcast the news on Twitter, Apple is being fined over infringement of VirnetX's network patents.

In the suit, VirnetX claimed that Apple integrated these network patents into its products like FaceTime, according to 9to5Mac . Originally VirnetX was asking for $900 million, but apparently the jury decided $368 million was enough.

VirnetX is well known for going after major tech companies for patent infringement . In its early days, the company aggressively patented technology that created virtual private networks over the Internet. It wasn't long before nearly every big tech company was doing the same. VirnetX eventually sued Microsoft and won a settlement for $200 million. Now it's suing Cisco, Avaya, and other big companies.
The U.S. International Trade Commission announced last month that its members voted to begin another investigation into Apple on behalf of VirnetX. The complaint filed against Apple said the tech giant infringed on VirnetX's patent that covers a secure connection between two computers over a network. In this suit, VirnetX aims to halt the importation of Apple products into the U.S., though the two companies are likely to reach a settlement or licensing deal instead.

solbil: i can feel an anti man sentiment going on in here. Op, are you trying to deny that mothers are the ones who spend more time with the kids? I know the fathers should be visible. But i am sure that you are not going to deny, despite you strong anti man feeling, that no matter the case, on the average, children are more drawn to their mothers than their fathers?

As for those who are quick to say "typical nigerian mentality" well, i think you all are just a bunch of xenocentric people who by chance have found yourselves abroad and now think anything nigeria is inferior! You have become so blinded by your xenocentrism that your intellectual development have been seriously affected! How else can we explain your inability to suspect the simple obvious? That by nature , children are more attached to their mothers than they are to their fathers. And the one who is closer, has more influence.

No! The "patriachal society" did not shape it this way. We have this, becos nature has made children to be drawn more to their mothers. So if you are angry, direct your anger against nature. Not men.
when it comes to teenagers, the pattern changes. Its no longer "children are more attached to their mothers". True, mothers spend more time with "children", that doesn't justify blaming them when the children turn out badly
Science/TechnologyWill Apple's Silicon Be Good Enough For A Mac? by ciphoenix(op): 4:56pm On Nov 06, 2012
http://m.cnet.com/news/will-apples-silicon-be-good-enough-for-a-mac/57545525:
Apple is starting to release some scary-good silicon. But can it muscle out Intel?
Last decade, the question was, will Apple go Intel? After years of speculation, that finally happened in 2006 , when Apple dropped the PowerPC for its Mac line.
So are we now on a similar trajectory, as a Bloomberg story speculates , with Apple eventually evicting Intel from its Macs and using its own internally developed processors?
A quick look at the latest Apple silicon shows the company is on the right track. The A6X is a serious piece of silicon that makes the newest gen 4 iPad a powerful gaming tablet. Just check out the benchmarks at Anandtech

If Apple maintains this pace, there's no reason it couldn't put, let's say, a future A7 or A8 in a MacBook-like device.
The problem is Apple is competing with the world's premier chipmaker -- that wasn't the case when it dumped IBM's PowerPC processor.
So, there's no assurance that when, for example, a future Apple chip appears it will offer the performance-per-watt (i.e., being fast while not too power-hungry) that would allow Apple to remain competitive with Intel-based mobile computers.
And here are some more considerations via chip analysts Nathan Brookwood of Insight 64 and Anand Shimpi of Anandtech, who offered their insights to CNET:
*. 64-bit ARM: Before Apple can move the ARM chip architecture to the MacBook (or Mac) line, it needs to have 64-bit processors. Those chips will start to emerge in late 2013 or early 2014 from ARM, and Apple will likely follow suit with its own 64-bit designs. --Brookwood
*. Apple's native chip tech: The A6 and A6X (inside the iPhone 5 and gen 4 iPad, respectively), use, for the first time, Apple's own processor designs rather than standard ARM designs. And, as a result, offer performance advantages over standard ARM chips."They're doing some good stuff." --Brookwood
*. Cost incentive: Intel's chips are very expensive, and Apple needs to maintain good margins to keep Wall Street happy. If it can provide a home-brewed solution that is good enough, it would make life a lot easier in the long run. --Anand
*. Design incentive: Intel's current chip road map is lagging behind where Apple wants to be in ultra-mobile. If Intel doesn't rectify this, Apple will look inward. --Anand

And let's throw in a point brought up by a semiconductor industry source, who wished to remain anonymous. Recent management changes at Apple may be behind a renewed push toward chip independence -- that is, getting all of Apple's devices running on one operating system on top of one Apple chip architecture.
So, is there any hope for Intel? Anand believes if Intel can offer next-generation chips -- code-named "Haswell" and "Broadwell" -- that knock Apple's socks off, it has a chance.
"Intel's goal is to basically bring [its] Core [architecture] into tablets, which, if they can pull it off, is going to be very difficult to compete with," Anand said.
But "Apple needs a backup plan, and that's what we're seeing here," Anand continued. "If [Apple CEO] Tim Cook is rational, he will pick whichever option makes the most sense in terms of performance, experience, and cost."

PhonesIos Apps Still Make More Money, But Android Apps Are Closing In by ciphoenix(op): 4:35pm On Nov 06, 2012
http://mblog.gsmarena.com/ios-apps-still-make-more-money-but-android-apps-are-closing-in/:
Android’s app store has a reputation of having more free apps and games than the iOS store, which is good for consumers, but the iOS store is better known for bringing in more revenue, which is good for developers. According to App Annie that is still true, but the gap is closing.
The analysts at App Annie have taken the two types of paid apps into account – premium apps (you pay for the app) and freemium apps (the app is free, but you can pay for in-game purchases). Freemium apps are the primary revenue generators on both platforms, showing incredible growth.
Worldwide, iOS revenues from freemium apps have quadrupled since the beginning of 2011. Revenues from premium apps have actually shrunk. China is a relatively new market for iOS and revenues are soaring, while the US market experienced a decline.
Meanwhile, revenues from such apps on Android have more than quadrupled worldwide since the beginning of this year, while premium app revenues have barely increased. Japan is showing big growths while the US seems to have stabilized, with focus shifting to freemium apps.
Those charts show indexed revenues with 100% set at the freemium app revenues for the first month that App Annie has data for on the given platform, which means they are not directly comparable.
However, an older infographic by them (humorously titled “Game of Phones”) shows that iOS is getting 71% of the combined revenues from apps compared to 29% for Android. This is calculated with data from April and the current combined iOS revenues are virtually identical to their April values, while combined Android revenues have nearly doubled.
You can check out Tech-thoughts , who have taken the time to go over reports from different analysts and estimate app revenues for both platforms.
