I'm having the same issues as you are. I want to dual boot my HP650 with Windows 8.1 already installed on one partition.

When I tried installing Linux Mint the installation process couldn't recognize the other disk space.
(See attached photos)

I've also tried using GParted, yet same thing.

Has anybody successfully dual booted HP650 please give me tips on how to go about this.

Create unallocated space while on Windows then use the partition manager during installation to create your partitions.

A dual boot is possible. You'll probably need to run bootrec after you install Ubuntu to access your windows partition without hiccups

Can someone tell me what the path to their data folder looks like? I'm not sure where to put mine and it doesn't seem to be the same location as with fm15.

If when I install and problems persist will switch to debian

Google63:

Thanks. I think doing a fresh install will be fine
remember to back up your home partition or if you created a separate one you could format the rest and leave it out during install.

purplekayc:
ok,but this isn't the latest version?
No it isn't but it's the latest LTS version

Hi guys. I heard that installing ubuntu via wubi leads to slight performance issues like slower disk performance and no hibernation (which i don't find really important). What if one creates a separate partition on windows and install ubuntu via wubi into that partition, any difference?

wubi won't work with windows 8, no matter how you choose to partition it. if you can partition, i don't see why you sould be using wubi anyway. install it directly.

Personally I discovered I can't shrink my drive beyond 70GB of free space. You could find out what yours is. If you have an unallocated space, you can't extend unless you free up from the other side

gat a big probs dualbooting my windows 7 wiv linux, i just cant shrink my c disk

Happens when files are in areas to be shrunk. Try defrag and if it doesn't work you might need to free up more space

please my system runs on windows 8.1, and it is partitioned already but the other partition is not empty, i used it to back up most of my important files. now i want to install Ubuntu 14.10 in that partition cos am scared to install it on my windows 8.1(don't want to mess it up), so my question is will the Ubuntu wipe my files in the other partition? cos i intend installing it in the other partition.
new to Ubuntu by the way(want to try it out)

No it won't, unless you tick the format box in the partition wizard

No you can't. Why do you need it anyway, there are a lot of legal (and better) alternatives

the power +vol up +home button displays nufin, it gets stuck on dis particular page. And it keeps blinking, someone said it lost its os

No, it didn't lose any OS. it's just a case of damaged recovery partition. You have to install a new one via Odin/Download mode

ok, pls. Must I use a recovery to flash the fone cos actually I just got the phone yesterday so I was trying to wipe the phone before the issue occurred. I don't want to backup anything meanwhile I have downloaded samsung usb driver, odin 3.09 and am presently downloading liquid smooth rom 3.1..so pls do I still need a recovery before I could flash it!

You do need a recovery. You could check what kind of recovery you have by booting up with power + Vol up + home button.

If it's the stock recovery, you'll need to download CWM, TWRP, or any other CWM based recoveries. Or cannibal open touch recovery (a new one based on the CyanogenMod recovery)

Edit: remember - flash recovery with Odin. flash rom with recovery

Thanks man, the wubi install was a bust and I guess I am going to have to do a BIOS workaround which is what I was trying to avoid in the first place.

Turn off fast boot(from power options before shutting down) , secure boot and enable legacy support.

Choose boot media on startup using F9 (that's the key on my laptop)

Ensure the boot media has a EFI tag (in case you see 2)

Install

After installation, restore secure boot and turn off legacy support (if your install was a UEFI install it should work).

It might still boot up Windows by default, just use f9 for when you want to boot into something else

can you do it for me or are you aware of any1 else that can..pls.. I will pm you my number shortly for whatsapp

Get a tar version of your favourite recovery (CWM or TWRP)

flash via Odin/Download mode

Use the recovery to flash any custom rom (stock or AOSP) of your choice (the note 2 has too many available and they're easier to download than stock)

i still don't grin grin

I only installed something else because my 14.04 install crashed. and remember the KDE i'm using is not vanilla. the Pinguy guy already installed and tweaked so many things so its not bad....... i doubt if it was vanilla kubuntu i'd still be using it.

yeah, i'm lazy too these days. no time to mess around too much.

ultimately its not so bad sha, now that i don't poke round my installs much. i just know i'm never downloading Pinguy OS ever again. too much crap and customizations. duplication of app, updating is a major data waste each time.....

BTW i'm thinking of migrating one old PC at work to a distro. PC came with XP and its a pain to allow XP on the network.... always attacked.
problem is i can't think of an appropriate distro.
Guy that uses the PC uses only* firefox and MS word. total noob, even in windows.

challenge is, something that does not deviate too far from windows look (and will not end up with me holding his hand all the time) AND will not be heavy on the download.

FFS even Xubuntu .iso is 915MB shocked shocked shocked thought of mint xfce, its 1.2gb

whatever happened to light distros?

Elementary OS is the closest to Windows look that I know
