onegentleguy: I think Mr meffy and co might be relying on that belief as a last resort given how what should've been the "traditional way" of curbing inflation appears to have failed.
In reality, the clearly contractionary posture by the apex body virtually all through 2022 should've at the very least, birthed a decelerating trend in inflation given how it gives the CBN power to control money supply. However, just approx 15.48% (ref: N0.5T out of N3.23) of the total money in circulation was within the banking system as at Q3, 2022. The implication? There was only very little the monetary tightening (rate hikes, QT...) of the CBN could do to to rein in on inflation given how near 85% of MS was outside the boundaries of it's control. Things have now changed though... with that figure now squeezed to just above 25%, as near 75% finds it's way back to within the banking system.
In meffy (and co's) thought, if we redesign the currency, we can then "force" people to bring these funds back to our "circle of control"... that way, we can influence it and quite possibly, curb down on the wave of inflationary pressure. Guess this explains the thinking that redesigning the currency might help reduce inflation.
That said, I also think there are other reasons for the policy at this time. Aside the expectant increase in the flow of liquidity/MS back into banking system, the move isn't unconnected to the push to fight illicit transaction/money laundering and perhaps terrorism financing and of course, vote buying ahead of the 2023 general election. Might be why the policy was immediately followed with a cash withdrawal restriction/QT.
Do I think the policy can help curb inflation. Yes... but the impact may not be far-reaching. Nigeria's problems are structural in nature... and untill the fiscal end of "the stick" connects appropriately, many of these monetary policies will only be short-lived.
In times past, I had highlighted why in several post here including the one from this link; https://www.nairaland.com/1131485/nigerian-stock-exchange-market-pick/6796#117896129
For me, our concern/goal should be how we can benefit from these policies. (when made) As I always say; until things get better (we should have a clear direction when that time comes) Nigeria remains a portfolio country. Just make your money and clean mouth.
These policy will benefit the banks. Some of them could be big winners in 2023! Will highlight why in a jiffy. thanks for the detailed explanation...Its making sense now |

Just an advice for the future, you should place a stop loss on stocks you buy. It saves you from losing so much. I lost about 30 % too, early this year and wished I had learned to use that feature. That feature is not on basic Passfolio application...... |

yok: IF YOU BUY US STOCKS FROM CHAKA, TROVE ETC WILL YOUR NAME BE ON THAT COMPANY'S SHAREHOLDER Register?
The answer is yes. You are a full shareholder with your name in the shareholders register and you will receive all communication that goes to any shareholder.
This clarication became necessary as there was a mis information by someone at NSEMPA (Nigeria Stock Market forum, Nairaland) sometimes ago. This is wrong information. I have been receiving meeting notices and I even got a mail sent to my house address for the SHLX shares I bought (and have sold) , telling me that no tax was removed from my dividend then.
So please let us get it right. If you buy US stocks through any of the platforms, you are a shareholder registered in the books of the company, your share will never be in the name of the Stockbrokers, even if you buy options it will still be in your name!!!
We are dimistifying investing in the US stock market. There is plenty money in investing in US stocks!!! .
I am always looking forward to each trading day with joy as there are bountiful opportunities. But, we need to follow someone that can show us the way. One of the ingredients that enhance our success is that we flow along the market on performing sectors at every point in time.

emmasoft: Alternatives to PHCN as proof of address or utility bill:
1. If it's not NIN slip you used for means of identification you can use NIN slip and in that case the address on the NIN slip will now be your residential address.
2. You can use the first page of your signed bank account statement. Like the first option the address on your bank statement will also be indicated as your residential address. If you have account with GTBank and do internet banking you can generate a signed bank statement without going to the bank hall
3. You can use the current receipt or agreement of your tenancy
4. If you are in Lagos, LAWMA receipt can also be used.
If you need any further clarification. Call/chat with the number on my signature Thank u, I dey Gombe... I will use the NIN slip Also, the account number I am using was opened since 2005 , cannot remember the exact date.....But there is a space for that |

RabbiDoracle: Warning: LONG POST
I have noticed lots of newbies asking questions on : what to buy, how to navigate the NSE, dividends, regulatory agencies (like SEC) and custodians (CSCS).
My simple advice is to read up all you can as fast as possible and arm yourself with knowledge of stock investing. We were once like you. You may not get everything by asking questions. You need to do you own research and be confident you did the hardwork.
Pick books on fundamental analysis (FA) and consume as fast as you can. Then learn Technical analysis (TA). A quick slice of both subjects : FA deals with understanding the company financial reports, management, news pertaining to the company. TA on the other hand deals with understanding how price moved in the past and how it is currently moving using several indicators. When you have quickly and fully grasped these, then you can understand where you want to put your money.
Many people will not tell you the truth, stock market can wipe you out very fast. If you are in doubt, ask those on the US stock market thread Many people may only tell you that stock market gives lots of gains, there can be losses as well. So when you see a market rising with rage, bullish on euphoria, remember that oneday things can turn sour. I was once as young as you were and had the belief that it can only rise. However the market showed that it can rise and it can fall at will.
"With every investment, one can become richer or wiser but never both" ~Unknown
Arm yourself with knowledge, when you fall pick up your pieces and stand. And keep moving! It is only with knowledge that you can survive in any investment product.
There is a global decline in all asset classes and many portfolios are hurting. My portfolio isn't having a dent because many of us foresaw this event and warned especially the US traders. When people say a bullish move will last forever, don't always listen to them. Always remember that there are seasons for everything. A season to plant and a season to harvest. However people prefer to listen to what makes them feel good and truly a bullish rage makes one feel good. But you should always trade those investment with caution especially when you entered in the late stage of the bull. Always have a balanced view(bull and bear scenario) of the market so that you will never be disappointed.
On a positive note, some tech stocks are about to bottom. Few Emerging markets have bottomed (won't name them). Some will have more pain. Some commodities will have more pain. However arming yourself with knowledge (in this case TA) will help you know when it is time to start entering into the market.
The next bullish phase in emerging markets, once it bottoms, will be an aggressive phase. As in very very aggressive. During that time, many people will start the bullish rant and lofty projections. Use your tongue to count your teeth when everyone on your street, church, school, market start investing.
"The two most powerful warriors are patience and time" ~Leo Tolstoy thank u,... Pls give us a recommendation of books sir |

Lazyyouth4u: My Oga, most people in the country are struggling to survive. Some are lucky if they can save money for tomorrow. How can they have what you call solid assets?
Sometimes, one has to be a bit sympathetic to the plights of the common man when giving out financial advice. In my opinion, most of these tips are tailored to the less than 1% of the population that earn good salaries or run successful businesses and can afford to save or invest some disposable income. This does not apply to the average Nigerian that reads NL (though most of them go dey form billionaire dorobucci but that na story for another day ).
It may be helpful to give financial advice and tips that the common man can relate to U dey mind my Oga Emma abi...?Na generational wealth o, Someone whose grandma has multiple rental apartments....He isn't starting from the scratch. zoputa: Resuming next year is no problem if notification is given this year....There are no good reasons for the delay. If they were looking for 400 E.H, what stops them from reducing it to 150 with your own name on it.... We never said they should employ everyone or the number agreed upon. They should employ you amongst the few they want so that the E.H stuff can end.... Ending this recruitment will make those who didn't make it have deep focus on their agenda, and enjoy were they work. But with this wait, even if someone is earning very good salary where he or she works, he or she will still be tempted to rely on NNPC... Forget these grammar of oil price issues, etc...NNPC can release it by reducing the intake and giving you your APL in Jesus name. Amen. You will get in there in Jesus name. Amen Amen!!!!!!!! |
