NEWSAbia youths set police patrol van, building ablaze over killing of resident, Friday Arunsi

Published 1 min ago on April 18, 2020By Chijindu Emeruwa

Youths of Ebem Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday morning, took to the streets and major roads in the community to protest the wanton killing of their son, a middle-aged man identified as Friday Arunsi by a trigger- happy security personnel.

This is coming barely 24hrs after a policeman on escort duty from one of the neighboring states killed a resident of Aba on the Uratta axis of the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.

While reports have it that the protesting members of the community set ablaze a Police Patrol Van belonging to the Ohafia Division, an unconfirmed report has it that another set of protesters also set ablaze the Ohafia Police Division building and released all the detained suspects in the police cell.

Sources at the community who spoke to reporters on the incident attributed the display of anger by the community to the unjust killing of Arunsi whom they identified as a hardworking man that sells provision at Eni Njoku road, Ebem Ohafia.

The sources including one Chima Ibem who couldn’t hold his emotions told our reporter that the policeman in the company of other policemen killed Arunsi and left him in the pool of his blood.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) of Abia State Police Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna could not be reached for his response over the alleged killing of Friday Arunsi by the police officer.

In a related development, the Abia State Government has expressed shock over the extrajudicial killing of yet another citizen by security agents stationed in Ohafia local government area of the State.

This was contained in a press statement by the State Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu and made available to newsmen on Saturday.

The Governor appealed to those involved to remain calm and allow a proper investigation to be carried out, so as to bring those involved to justice.

The statement reads partly, “Abia State Government is shocked to receive the news of yet another alleged extra-judicial killing of a citizen by security agents, this time in Ohafia. We are also receiving reports of ongoing skirmishes involving community youth and security agents.

“The Governor appeals to all parties to ensure immediate restoration of calm to allow a proper investigation to be conducted with a view to bringing those who are culpable to justice.

“The Transition Council Chairman of Ohafia LGA, Prince Fred Idika, has been directed to immediately meet with the family of the bereaved and others affected by the unfortunate skirmish to express the sincere condolences of the Government of Abia State and reassure them that everything possible will be done to ensure that justice is served.

“We wish to reiterate that we will not accept the unwarranted killing of any citizen or resident of the state and demand once more that security agents enforcing the COVID-19 necessitated lockdown in the state do so within the operating guidelines for maintenance of internal security as issued to all arm bearing forces in Nigeria. The reckless killing of unarmed civilians will not be tolerated by this administration and we call for an end to it forthwith.

“Once again, we urge the youths in Ohafia in particular and the State, in general, to be calm as we shall leave no stone unturned in unraveling the circumstances that led to this latest unfortunate incident and ensure justice is served”.

Politics / Buhari Accepts Abba Kyari’s Death As Will Of God – Garba Shehu by Cirilla(f): 1:46pm On Apr 18, 2020
Buhari accepts Kyari’s death as will of God – Shehu

President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the death of his Chief of Staff, Mallam Abba Kyari, as an inevitable will of God.

The President’s thoughts on the demise of his right-hand-man was disclosed in a media chat by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

Mallam Shehu, who spoke at the graveside of Kyari, said President Buhari, being a religious person, had accepted the development as the will of God.

“These are not things that we have a choice in, it’s providence, it’s God who says who goes and who stays. The President, obviously a deeply religious person, takes it that it cannot be helped, at the end of the day, all of us will also go that way,” he said.

Speaking about the relationship between the President and his late Chief of Staff, Shehu said Kyari had been a close associate of the President for more than 40 years, describing him as the rallying point of the Muhammadu Buhari Administration.

He went on to note that Kyari offered 100% loyalty to the President and was about the only one person who understood President Buhari’s view on virtually every issue.

“It’s a deeply shocking incident because Abba Kyari is like a pillar there in the Presidency, he’s a rallying point of the entire workforce working the President.

“He has had a long working relationship with the President; more than 40 years of being together. He has a full understanding of the President, he knew exactly where the President stood on every issue and so therefore, he was there to fix it for the President and get them done as the President wants.

“He offered 100% loyalty to the President and all of these things that Abba Kyari brought focus to bear on, long delayed infrastructure; whether they are road, railway, power and so on, all of them have the imprints of the President on them because this is where the President lived and believed and Abba Kyari was there to ensure that President Buhari, at the end of his two terms, leaves behind legacies that will last and for which he will be remembered and these are the things that Abba Kyari cared for”, he said.

Meanwhile, to lay anxieties about a possible breach of public health protocols, especially as the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) had warned against conducting private burials for victims of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease, to rest, Shehu noted that the usual ceremonies that would have followed the burial had been put off.

“The burial and the funeral are strictly private. After the burial all those who have come will go home. There will be no ceremonies such as paying of condolence visits.

“We want Nigerians to observe the regulations as put in place by the NCDC and the Federal Ministry of Health, so that we can all stay healthy and and live to be there tomorrow”, he clarified.

Iranian teen shocks chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen to win $14,000 prize
By Ben Morse, CNN
Updated 7:35 AM EDT, Fri April 17, 2020

(CNN)A 16-year-old Iranian chess prodigy has upended the chess world by beating World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in the final of the Banter Blitz Cup.

Alireza Firouzja defeated the Norwegian 8.5-7.5 in the final of the online quickfire knockout contest -- where players must comment verbally on their moves, and their opponents, during the game -- to claim the $14,000 prize.

The Iranian is the second-youngest player to reach the 2700 Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) rating -- the rankings that govern international chess competition.

After 7 months and 131 matches, the series of three-minute games involving 128 contestants ended in a final between the world champion since 2013 and the rising superstar.

Before the clash, the world no.1 player didn't underestimate Firouzja, calling him "by far my biggest challenge."

Firouzja initially rose to fame when he came in second to Carlsen in the Moscow World Blitz in December.

And after losing the 90-minute contest, Carlsen paid his respects to the teenager, calling him "amazingly strong."

"Good game, Alireza! That was really horrible, I just was way out of shape, but he deserves full credit," the 29-year-old said on the livestream.

"I've just got to be better, but yeah, he's amazingly strong! Full credit."

Firouzja was gracious in victory.

"I think the match was 50:50," said the teen, who is ranked the world's no.21 player. "I don't think I was favorite or he was favorite ... you should be a little lucky."

Chess fans won't have to wait long to see a rematch between the pair, as they face off once again on April 20 in the $250,000 Magnus Carlsen Invitational.

The competition, hosted by Carlsen, will pit eight of the world's best players against each other for the record prize.

Earlier this year, Carlsen made history as he extended his unbeaten run to 111 successive classical games, breaking the 110-game streak set by Sergei Tiviakov in 2005.

Playing under a different flag
Firouzja plays under the flag of FIDE, the global chess organization, after leaving his native Iran to avoid government restrictions. Iran strongly discourages its citizens from competing against Israelis, as a sign of protest against the country and a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The teenage grandmaster moved to France at the end of 2019 with his father so he could compete against Israeli opponents.

Like chess, the sport of judo has seen fighters go against Iranian authorities' orders to avoid Israeli competition.

Judoka Saeid Mollaei said he was ordered to withdraw from the World Judo Championships in 2019 to avoid the possibility of meeting Israeli Sagi Muki in the final.

The 27-year-old ignored those warnings and after losing in the semifinals of the competition -- a result he says that emerged from the emotional stress caused by the Iran officials' request -- he traveled to Germany to begin the process of applying for asylum.

The Iran Judo Federation was suspended from international competition as a result.

Health / Quarantined Ugandans Have Sex With Each Other – Uganda Health by Cirilla(f): 1:24pm On Apr 15, 2020
NEWSCOVID-19: Quarantined Ugandans have sex with each other – Uganda Health MinistryPublished 3 mins ago on April 15, 2020By David Abakpa
Permanent Secretary Diana Atwine

Uganda’s Permanent Secretary of the country’s Ministry of Health, Diana Atwine, has disclosed that those living in the country’s institutional quarantine have started having sex with each other.

According to the country’s Ministry of Health, it is a worrying development since social distancing is one measure that can curb the spread of the disease, especially among this already-risky group.

Speaking on Uganda’s Radio One, Diana Atwine, said they mainly worried that this will thwart the government’s efforts to curb the spread of the disease because these people leave their rooms to have sex with other people who they only met in quarantine centres.

“Ugandans are not serious. Some who are in quarantine have even begun having (sexual) affairs. They move to rooms of others in the hotels where we have placed them. Others like in Mulago move from their rooms to visit their colleagues who are in other rooms, this is too dangerous and it will distract our efforts,” said Atwiine.

She explained that this was a major reason why some people in quarantine have not been released even though they were to be there for 14 days.

She added that they have deployed security officers to the quarantine centres to stop or limit movements.

In March, the Ministry of Health gazetted 17 places to be used as isolation centres for those undergoing mandatory quarantine in a bid to stop the escalating coronavirus cases.

The Ministry said these places are located around Kampala city and Entebbe Municipality and were identified after an assessment to guarantee everyone’s safety regardless of their social status.

These areas include Hotels, Hospitals, lodges, and Universities. There are currently over 232 people under quarantine.

Uganda has, so far, recorded 54 cases with 7 recoveries.

Politics / FG Sacks 2 Contractors Over Delay In Disbursement Of Cash Transfer by Cirilla(f): 1:07pm On Apr 14, 2020
The federal government has terminated the contract of two Payment Service Providers (PSPs) “for their total failure to meet the contractual agreement to commence Conditional Cash Transfer” to beneficiaries in four states of the federation assigned to them.

The two payment providers are Data Mining Company and Innovative NIPOST. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement signed by her media aide, Salisu Na’inna Dambatta.

She said the affected states are Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom in the South South; Abia in the South East and Zamfara, in the North West. The minister said the termination was with immediate effect.

Daily Trust reports that President Muhammadu Buhari had during his first national broadcast announced the payment as a measure to cushion the effect of the coronavirus lockdowns in the country on poor and vulnerable households.

But the minister stated that “The immediate termination of the contract would be with the guidance of the World Bank, and a new procurement process launched using World Bank procurement guidelines to ensure that payments commence in the affected states on or before April 28, 2020.”

The Minister said that the Federal Government cannot accept delays in the current payment round of N20,000 stipends to beneficiaries in poor and vulnerable households under any excuses in the four states or any other states of the federation.

“The failure of any payment service providers to meet their contractual agreement is unacceptable. The Federal Government through the Ministry cannot allow contractors to derail the immediate Conditional cash transfers to the poor and the vulnerable,” the Minister added. Daily Trust reports that Hajiya Farouq, had on March 30, said the Federal Government had identified over 11 million poor Nigerians to benefit from the palliatives to cushion the harsh effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking in Abuja at the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, she said the ministry had “11,045,537 individuals, 35 states, 453 local governments, 4,946 wards, 47,698 communities and 2,644,495 households on the national social register of poor and vulnerable households.”
