OPEN LETTER TO PROF. ANGO Abdullahi

Prof. Ango Abdullahi,

OUR attention has been drawn to your statements in Vanguard of Saturday, June 10, 2017. You are alleged to be in support of the call on the Igbo to quit. It is unfortunate, grossly unfortunate, that a scholar of your calibre will be so partisan as to be unable to see the wisdom in retaining Nigeria as a corporate entity. I know you have, in the past, been anti-Igbo.

One would have thought that our education exposes us to a level where we can live even with our enemies. You said in the alleged publication that, “each year up to the time Nigeria gained its independence, none of the two regions East and West was able to produce for its self. I mean none of the Western and Eastern Regions had the money to effectively run the affairs of the region until they got financial support from the Northern Region.” It is this assumption of yours that I want to address.

First of all it is not true that the North had bailed out Eastern Region or the Western Region. But you claim that even before independence none of the regions could live without Northern subvention. Let me draw your attention to the facts before independence. You should read W.M.M Geary’s work titled “ Nigeria under the British Rule” published by the Cass and Company Limited, London (1927).
Subsidizing the North. May I draw your attention especially to pages 124 and 125. You will see published, General Revenue for the Northern and Southern Protectorates before the Amalgamation and the Percentage of Total Revenue originating from the North. You will see that contrary to your argument, it was indeed the South that was subsidizing the North. I am reproducing the tables here for clarity.

I also draw your attention to Abstracts of Revenue, 1809 to 1913 . You will also see that the North could not have survived without the Imperial grant and the support of the South. When you look at the third table, Northern Nigeria revenue paid by the South and the Imperial grant, it will disabuse your mind and show you that without the South and the Imperial grant, the Northern government/states could not have existed.

Indeed, one of the reasons for the amalgamation was the fact that the British colonial government was tired of carrying the burden of the North and they thought that by merging the Southern and Northern protectorates, the country would be stable. Indeed, the circumstances that forced the British government to amalgamate the Northern protectorate and the Southern protectorate on January 1, 1914 were motivated neither by political exigencies nor by a closer cultural understanding among the diverse elements of the conglomeration that was later to be called Nigeria. It is obvious that the primary interest of the British government was economic.
It was also obvious that the Northern protectorate, because of its geographical location and cloudy economic prospects, was not likely to be viable.

In fact, the Lugard administration was finding it rather difficult to maintain the Northern protectorate which was already running into deficit. Testifying to the financial difficulty of the North and the anticipated prosperity that would follow the projected amalgamation of the Northern protectorate with the Southern protectorate, Lord Lugard reported that “the prosperity of the Southern protectorate as evidenced by the liquor trade, had risen by 57 per cent. In fact, the liquor trade alone yielded a revenue of One Million, One Hundred and Thirty-Eight Thousand pounds (£1,138,000) in 1913. This he believed was the result of amalgamation of the Lagos colony with the Southern protectorate.

The Northern administration could not have survived without the imperial grant-in-aid which in the year before the amalgamation stood at One Hundred and Thirty Six thousand Pounds, (£136,000) and had averaged Three Hundred and Fourteen Thousand, Five Hundred Pounds (£314,500) for the eleven years ending in March, 1912. Besides, the burden of financing the North seemed to have been resisted and bitterly criticized by the Southerners. The expenditure of the British tax payer’s money in financing a colonial territory was a contradiction of the British colonial policy enunciated sixty (60) years before by L. Gray which stipulated that “the surest test for the soundness of measures for improvement of an uncivilized people is that they should be self-supporting.”

Economic position

This is by L. Gray in The Colonial Policy of the Administration of Lord Russell, London: Cass and Company Limited, 1853, page 281″ . Further, the Northern protectorate was not only land-locked but bounded by territories that fell under the influence of other European powers. It was, therefore, inconceivable how the economic position would have improved without aid from the South.

The only alternative open to Lord Lugard was to amalgamate the North and the South and thus have a legitimate reason for the expenditure of revenue from the South in developing the North. Details of this manouevre was laid bare in a letter written by Lord Lugard on November 22, 1912 to his wife explaining how he had used the Southern resources to finance the Northern deficit.

Regardless of the merit which Sir F.D Lugard saw in his financial amalgamation of the South and the North, the prevalence of bitter criticism in the South shows the unpopularity of the amalgamation. At that time, the export from the South stood at Five Million, One Hundred and Twenty-Two Thousand Pounds (£5,232,000) while the export from the North stood at Two Hundred Thousand Pounds (£200,000) in 1910. This was very discouraging to the colonial system and called for urgent remedy. On Tuesday, January 31, 1911, there were attacks on the colonial secretary’s suggestion that the South should advance a loan of Two Hundred Thousand Pounds (£200,000) to the North for the completion of the Baro to Kano railway, in addition to the sum of One Million, Two Hundred and Thirty Thousand which was required from the South.

One of the criticisms of the Northern dependence on the South was voiced out by Honourable Sapara Williams who contended that before the loan was to be granted, the Secretary of State should settle the type of relationship that existed between Lagos and Zungeru, the two administrative headquarters for the South and the North respectively.

Existing hostility

He contended that as far as he was concerned, that the Southerners were strangers to anything connected with the railway after it has passed Offa, the last Yoruba town on the line.

He referred to the existing hostility between the North and the South, particularly as regards the issues of extending the Northern boundary of the Southern protectorate to incorporate Yoruba territories now locked up in the Northern protectorate. My dear Professor, the hostility of the Northerners towards the Southerners is not new in the Nigerian history. Even during the time of Sapara Williams, the Northerners did not see anything reasonable in the relationship with the South.

You will recall the massacres of the Igbos in Jos in 1945; you will recall the massacres of the Igbos in Kano in 1953; you will recall the massacres that preceded the civil war. If we cannot live together, Mr. Professor, don’t you think that it is high time we told ourselves the naked truth.

You will also recall that in 1964, after the crisis that followed the elections, that Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe had called on Nigerians to call a round table conference to discuss how we could share our assets if it was impossible for us to live together. We kept on patching this unpatchable relationship. In my honest opinion, this relationship has soured enough that it will take the wisdom of God to make us love one another.

We went to Aburi and there the leaders agreed that the only solution to our problems was to have a confederation but Gowon reneged. You will recall also that the British government, after the crisis of 1951-1952, realized that this country could not be a unitary state and they brought in the 1953 constitution which gave us regional autonomy. If the colonial masters in their wisdom knew that we could not be a unitary government and gave us what we had at independence, we should have respected their wisdom.

You will also recall that after the civil war, the regional autonomy which our independence conferred on us was violated by the military government led by the Northern soldiers. We ended up having this contraption that we are having now; it has not worked. It will not work, unless there is proper restructuring of the nation. We should stop pretending.

I believe in all sincerity that if we cannot accommodate every segment of the federation in one Nigeria, we should call a constitutional conference to decide how this country can be restructured so that every area can take care of itself and we can relate on certain agreed basis.

We have slaughtered ourselves enough. We do not want another civil war in order to justify the existence of “One Nigeria”.

May I humbly call on all Nigerians to examine the last constitutional conference which addressed the issue of restructuring. Let us not leave it to our youths to tell us when we can stay together or when we cannot stay together. The youths in Biafra are crying; the youths in the North are crying; the Niger Delta youths are crying. The middle belt is not happy with what is happening to them.

Added to these, the strategies of the herdsmen to penetrate every nook and corner of Nigeria, is raising some issues for national discourse. The Federal Government has deliberately refused to call the herdsmen to order.

They have killed many people and ravaged many communities. None of them has been arrested. Why? In May 2016, I published two articles and warned that the activities of the herdsmen was a plot which would soon cover the whole country. The heavy silence of the Federal Government tends to support the view that the herdsmen are on an undisclosed mission which only time would tell.
The Government must listen to the call for restructuring in order to have a workable nation.

The military, for partisan reasons, jettisoned the independence constitution and foisted an unworkable constitution on Nigeria. Let us be humble and accept that we made a gross mistake by throwing away our independence constitution. It is now clear that unless we return to a structure that guarantees regional autonomy, there will be no peace in this country. The earlier we returned to regional autonomy the better for us.

Regional autonomy

I want you to look at the tables I have given you to see that your postulation that the North, before independence, had been carrying the burden of the South is a fallacy. The statistics I have given you here were not compiled by me.

They were compiled by the colonial government in 1809 and 1813. They show that the North has always been the Southern burden. Even in this administration, without the resources from the South, the North cannot make it. This is a gospel truth. But if the North believes it can go without the South, what prevents us from restructuring so that the North can be on its own and the South can be on its own.

Let us call on our government to look seriously at this unworkable structure called Nigeria. We must not allow our youths to be slaughtered again defending the indefensible. This federation as it is, is unworkable.

My dear Professor let us come together as scholars and look at our country very objectively.

German police arrest Nigerians who marry for EU residence permits


A ring of fraudsters who allegedly arranged sham marriages between Portuguese women and Nigerian men to obtain EU residence permits was busted on Tuesday, according to German police.

At least 40 residences were searched in Berlin alone during the coordinated mass raids across Germany.

Raids were also conducted in Potsdam, Frankfurt and the eastern town of Goerlitz.

The federal police said there were at least 70 known cases so far with more expected.

In Berlin, police arrested four women between ages of 46 and 64, and one 50-year-old man who was said to be the head of the ring and had contacts in Portugal, helping them to recruit women from there.

The Nigerian men paid up to US$15, 500 for the documents to the ring, which shared some of the money with the Portuguese women.

Portuguese police aided in the investigation by prosecutors in Berlin, which had been ongoing since November 2016.

The repeat of 2015 election pattern is gradually taking shape with this attitude again

Ndigbo, Biafra, and 2019


I saw a post on the wall of one of the older generation diasporan Nigerians who goaded some misguided Igbo Youths into making series of hate speeches. She posited that the Igbos will deal with APC in the 2019 General election; that not one vote will the ruling party get.

I noticed most of the comments on the thread were in agreement with her. These misguided adults also listed the Yorubas as enemies for not supporting the Biafrans in their quest for self-determination or tow their line of reasoning.

The idea that the votes from Southeast can prevent a Hausa man or Yoruba man or any other tribe from becoming President of Nigeria is nothing more than wishful thinking. It is laughable considering the humbling lessons of 2015 elections outcome. The earlier Igbos wake up to the reality on the ground the better.

Elections are not won by mere rhetorics or propaganda. To achieve victory, you will have to build coalitions across other regions. You have to create alliances with individuals, groups, and even religious organisations. You cannot achieve this by intimidating other or isolating your tribe.
Just like you lost the IPOB battle without a strategy, you will lose again if you think you don't need other tribes to achieve your goals.

A master strategist like Asiwaju Bola Tinubu realised the importance of alignment if ever the Southwest is going to be relevant in national politics. Not many saw the possibility of the Southwest playing an active role in the centre. It would take Tinubu several trips from Lagos to Kaduna, Sokoto, Kano, Katsina, Abuja and even Maiduguri at the height of the Boko Haram menace.

I will break it down why the Igbos can NEVER do it alone. Let us play it by the numbers here.
The total number of INEC's registered voters in the entire southeast state is 7,028,560. Anambra having the highest figure of 1,758,280, and Ebonyi state having the lowest figure of 876,249.
SouthSouth region having 8,937,057. Former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan home state of Bayelsa having the lowest number of registered voters in the country with 472,389, Rivers state having the highest number of 2,419,057 and my home state of Delta having 1,900,055. So the total number of registered voters in the whole of Southeast and Southsouth is 15,965,617.
The total number of registered voters in Northwest region is 18,900,543. North Central has 7,675,369. And NorthEast recording 10,038,119. This gives the three Northern regions a combined registered voters figure of 36,614,031. The combined number of registered voters of Southeast and Southsouth is not even up to President Buhari's stronghold of the Northwest region of the country.
The calculation above does not include the Southwest region with 14,298,356. Lagos having the highest registered voters in the country with 6,247,854.

For the Igbos to be more relevant in the political sphere, they will need to jettison the victim mentality of 'everyone hate the Igbos' and build alliances across other regions.
Politics is not just a game of numbers, it's also about strength and goodwill. It's about what you have, what you bring to the negotiation table. Divisiveness and arrogance will not earn you trust among your allies.
Aside the monumental corruption under the Goodluck Jonathan's administration, one of the many reasons he was defeated in the last presidential election as a sitting president was because he could not reign in the Ex Niger-Delta militant's tumultuous noise all over the country during his time. The threat and hate speeches from the likes of Asari Dokubo and his minions culminated in his loss.

This brings me to the big lesson I learnt in season 5 of the series Game Of Thrones. A bastard child, Jon Snow was chosen by Providence to become the Lord Commander of the Night Watch. He realised he had an inadequate number of fighters to defend Castle Black from the White Walkers attack. To strengthen his force, he sailed all the way to form all alliance with his enemies who had just massacred 50 of his men. He knew he would need the strength and capacity of the Wildlings to fight a bigger, common enemy in the White Walkers.

The earlier the Igbos understand the need for an alliance, the better for them. You cannot aim to dine with other people if you continue to threaten them and destroy the bond of trust needed to forge a formidable partnership. To make progress, we need other like minds. We need the goodwill of our neighbours and the trust of our associates.
It is time to build bridges and erect pillars of trust. It is time to embrace love and togetherness and stop acting like a tree can
make a forest.

I will conclude here with a verse from the Holy Book, the book of Ecclesiastes 10:10 which says that “wisdom is profitable to direct.”.

I have said severally that somebody is seriously capitalizing on the clamor for self determination to enrich himself.

Initially he was planning war and even compared Nigeria to Somalia if he was arrested eventually, nothing came out of that. The constitution made everything clear on referendum, if with your crowd you cannot force 5 states Assemblies to push for that then you are just taking advantage of the gullible followers for you gains financially and politically, Sometimes a Biafra Passport was sold at N10,000 each, what came out of that venture? somebody's gain.

We suddenly refer to the constitution as trash? Sorry sir, that you see it as trash doesn't mean it will be trashed! Is marriage by force? Hell no! You want a divorce? There's a process! There are two ways only to achieve this;

1. The people who want out and the states who want to be part of the divorce should get their state houses of assembly to deliberate on it. Referendums done and if there's a majority against the divorce then it's dead on arrival but if the majority wants out, we write our senators and house of reps members. A bill for a split and amendment of the constitution to accommodate the split will be debated on the floor of both the upper and lower houses. If the Ayes have it, a procedure and date is arranged for the exit just like 'BREXIT'. If the 'Nays' have it everybody goes home! Or we opt for the second alternative;

2. Forceful exit (war). If those seeking exit win, fine. They go build their kingdom with streets made of gold and no corruption where every man is equal with no kidnapping, stealing etc. If those against it win, you become conquered folks yet again and the constitution rewritten yet again but this time IN BLOOD! Either way, LIVES will be lost!

Anything asides these two options, NA NOISE WE DEY MAKE as no sitting president will on his own split the country! If any tries it, the military has a duty to defend the country from internal and external enemies. That president will be seen as an enemy for violating the constitution and kicked out of aso rock. The most a president can do is discreetly lobby the National Assembly.

PRESIDENT of Jewish Voice Ministries, Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, yesterday announced that the DNA test result of saliva samples taken in Nnewi, to determine whether Igbo were Jews or not was not positive in the first run.
Saliva samples were collected from Igbo community for Y25, DNA test on February 6 and 7, 2017 in Nnewi Anambra State.
Bernis who read the report from a laboratory based in Houston, Texas, United States of America said the result of the samples taken from Nigeria randomly on some people in Igboland bear no semblance with the ones in the data base of the laboratory.
The Israeli, in company of three of his compatriots said none of the 124 specimens taken from Nigeria matched the samples in the Houston laboratory which is as old as 17 years in DNA business.
He, however, said the result did not rule out the claim of the Igbo to Israeli descent as more research would still be made to prove the claims.
Meanwhile, President of the Redeemed Israel Community of Nazarene Association of Nigeria (RICON), Bishop Ignatius Orizu has assured his members that their expectations as Igbo being descendants of the Jews will still be met.
Bishop Orizu gave the assurance, yesterday, when members of the group gathered at Uruagu-Nnewi to collect for the confirmation of the deoxyribonucleic (DNA) test result on claims that Igbo are descent of Israel. They got to the venue as early as 9.00am for a result that was to reshape the relationship of Igbo and Israel.
While commenting on the DNA result, Bishop Orizu said the result would not deter the organisation from continuing to research into the claimed descent of the Igbo to Israel.
He noted that the tradition, religion and culture of the Igbo long before the arrival of the missionaries had great semblance with that of the Israelis.
National Secretary of RICON, Abraham Ndukwe said there were many books already in circulation that collaborated the claims of Igbo to Israeli descent.
He said Igbo customs and traditions in burial and a lot of other things had semblance with that of the Israelis to prove the relationship between the two nations.
However, he urged the congregation not to lose hope as science is always in the business of discovery and recovery.
He appealed to the Federal Government to recognise the Jews in Nigeria and proclaim Yaweh’s feast of Passover, Trumpets, Atonements, Tabernacles among others as public holidays as approved for Christians and Muslims during Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Fayose became the Governor of Ekiti state in 2014 while Baguda became Governor of Kebbi state in 2015, while Baguda took N4bn to BOI, got counter funding and got 78,000 people cultivating rice (employment), my own governor Fayose took N4.7 to build the first flyover in Ekiti state, while the farmers in Kebbi have sold their rice to Lagos state (LAKE RICE) and have moved on to increasing their farm size, my Governor is still battling with how to complete the humongous project that won't provide a single sustainable job.

While the Kebbi state Governor saw the potentials in processing by partnering with WACOT to provide a N10 billion rice mill that have a production capacity of 100,000 tonnes annually; silos for storing 18,000 tonnes of paddy and a warehouse for storing additional 12,000 tonnes of paddy. When operational, it is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for 3,500 people and its procurement will reach out to 50,000 farmers my own Governor Fayose has approved the construction of another governor's office, another high court, reconstruction of the road to his village (even though its next to mine) for several billions of naira.

Kebbi state is not owing any salary and the state government didn't blame it on PMB whereas Ekiti is owing pensioners as much as 11months while civil servants have 6months unpaid salaries, the difference between these Governors is called good governance with the people at the centre of it.

If you think Fayose is your best Governor because he gives people 1kg of rice plus N500, you need to have your head examined especially if you are from Ekiti state, for those of you that are not from Ekiti state and assume Fayose is the best governor because he insults PMB, you are part of the larger problem, please go to your state and compare your Governor with Kebbi state Governor, after that, come back and make your comment

RRS RE-ARRESTS EX-CONVICTS TERRORISING MILE 2

The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two suspected robbers who specialise in attacking and robbing motorists and commuters in Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

The suspects, Sunday Chukwunweike (26) and Emmanuel Friday (28) were arrested after mid – night on Mile 2 Bridge in Lagos after robbing a breakdown truck’s driver, Yinusa Salami alongside two other accomplices, Silas and Sule, both still at large of a sum of N45,000 and his mobile phone.

In his confession, one of the suspects, Emmanuel, a secondary school dropout who later became a bus conductor in the area said, “I was in the company of my friends when we saw the driver. He was coming from Apapa. He stopped on the bridge to pick somebody.

It was the elderly ones among us that robbed him. I thought they were going to drop some money for us to eat when approached him.

It was Silas and Sule that dipped their hands in his pockets and brough out some money.
They took the money and the phone and we went our way.

They later told us that it was N40,000: 00 they took in his pocket. Because they are stronger than us, they gave my colleague and I N10,000:00 to share.

We were hungry, that was what made us follow them. I took to the street after dropping out of school to fend for myself.

Although, I have participated in so many crimes such as inter-group fight, hemp smoking, pick pocketing and the rest, I have never been involved in robbery or threatening people with gun or dangerous objects”.

Emmanuel added, “I have been to the prison twice, one in 2013 where I spent 7 months and also in 2016 where I bagged 3 months after engaging in street fighting”

He continued: “Silas and Sule forcefully collected a sum of N45,000 from the truck driver and gave both me and Chukwunweike N10,000 as share from the loot. We went back to our usual joint before the truck driver led men of the Rapid Response Squad to arrest us”.

On his part, Chukwunweike, an ex-convict confessed to the crime but blamed his wrong doing to the hard life which he had expose himself to on the street. “I came back from prison after spending 3 months but here I am again in another mess”.

The truck driver, Yinusa Salami stated that he stopped at the bridge to pick up his brother who was waiting for him there. “I was coming from Apapa and heading to Osun. I wanted to assist my brother who was equally going to Osun State. I got to the bridge and I alighted from the truck, that was when I saw four of them.

I was about giving them some money when they seized my arms, before dragging me to the ground and forcefully collected all the money in my pocket totalling N45,000 claiming they control the area and nothing can happen afterwards.

I approached men of RRS stationed at the other side of the bridge to report the incident. They followed me to track the boys. That was when we saw the two of them trying to split their own share of the money. They were arrested there but the other two guys escaped.”

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations and prosecution.
