Foreign Affairs / George W. Bush Addresses ‘unjustified Invasion Of Iraq’ by ClipHog: 7:36am On May 19, 2022
Former US President George W. Bush inadvertently condemned the “invasion of Iraq” while blasting Russia’s attack on Ukraine, a slip-up which he blamed on his old age.

Speaking in Dallas on Wednesday for an event hosted by the eponymous George W. Bush Institute, the ex-commander-in-chief railed against the Russian government under President Vladimir Putin and his decision to send troops into Ukraine in late February.

“The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia, and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq – I mean of Ukraine,” he said, drawing laughs from the audience as he again murmured “Iraq” under his breath. He attributed the mistake to his age, saying “I’m 75” before continuing the address.Bush went on to praise Ukraine’s leadership as the fighting in the country continues into its third month, at one point dubbing President Volodymyr Zelensky a “cool little guy” and “the [Winston] Churchill of the 21st century,” comparing him to the famous British wartime leader.

As president, Bush launched the 2003 invasion of Iraq which quickly toppled the government in Baghdad and transformed into a lengthy military occupation. Up to 209,000 civilians were killed in the resulting fighting, according to the Iraq Body Count project, along with nearly 4,500 American soldiers and thousands of additional casualties indirectly linked to the war.

Before ousting Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the Bush administration repeatedly claimed to have intelligence showing that Baghdad had not abandoned efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction following the 1991 Gulf War. Those claims were later proven inaccurate, however, as US forces failed to uncover any ongoing WMD projects despite intensive inspections.

More than 19 years later, around 2,500 US soldiers remain in the country, though they now serve in non-combat roles with the permission of the local authorities. In March, General Frank McKenzie – then the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM) – suggested the American military presence would not end anytime soon, citing the alleged threat posed by militia groups supported by Iran.https://www.rt.com/news/555722-george-bush-ukraine-gaffe/

Politics / Fate Of Hundreds Of Ukrainian Fighters Uncertain After Surrender by ClipHog: 11:50am On May 18, 2022
The fate of Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant remained uncertain on Tuesday after hundreds surrendered and were transported to Russian-controlled territory.

Russia said on Tuesday 265 Ukrainian fighters had surrendered from a besieged final stronghold in the steel plant, hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the mission to defend the facility was over and several fighters had been moved to Russian territory.

KEEP READINGRussia’s defence minister said that of those who surrendered, 51 were seriously wounded and taken to a hospital in Novoazovsk in the Russian-backed breakaway Donetsk region. Their fate remained uncertain.

While Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar said “an exchange procedure will take place for their return home”, Zelenskyy cautioned that “the work of bringing the boys home … needs delicacy and time.”

The speaker of Russia’s parliament said it will consider banning the exchange of Russian prisoners of war for captured members of Ukraine’s Azov regiment.

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the State Duma, said its members were “Nazi criminals” who should not be included in prisoner exchanges.

“They are war criminals and we must do everything to bring them to justice,” he said.

The Duma website said he had asked the defence and security committees to prepare an instruction to that effect.

Legislator Leonid Slutsky, one of Russia’s negotiators in stalled peace talks with Ukraine, called the evacuated combatants “animals in human form” and said they should receive the death penalty.LIVE

Legislator Leonid Slutsky, one of Russia’s negotiators in stalled peace talks with Ukraine, called the evacuated combatants “animals in human form” and said they should receive the death penalty.

“They do not deserve to live after the monstrous crimes against humanity that they have committed and that are committed continuously against our prisoners he said"
For his part, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said only that President Vladimir Putin had guaranteed that the fighters who surrendered would be treated “in accordance with international standards”.

Siege draws to a close
The surrender came as the most devastating siege of Russia’s war in Ukraine drew to a close, capping weeks of fierce urban warfare that left much of Mariupol, a key port city between Russia and Russia-annexed Crimea, in ruins.

As Russia took control of the city, Ukrainian civilians and hundreds of Ukrainian fighters, many of them from the Azov regiment, sought refuge in the Azovstal works, a vast Soviet-era plant founded under Josef Stalin and designed with a maze of bunkers and tunnels to withstand a nuclear attack.

Most civilians in the plant had been rescued in recent weeks after the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross brokered a deal with Russia and Ukraine.

Moscow has depicted the Azov Regiment as one of the main perpetrators of the alleged radical anti-Russian nationalism and alleged “Nazism” from which it said it needs to protect Ukraine’s Russian speakers.Ukraine has maintained that the Azov regiment, which was created in 2014 to fight Russian-backed separatists who had taken control of parts of the Donbas, had reformed away from its radical nationalist origins to be integrated into the country’s National Guard.

Ukraine’s military command has cast all the defenders of the Azovstal plant as “heroes of our time”.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak hailed the defenders of Mariupol, who held out against the Russian advance for 82 days, saying the fighting held up Russian plans to seize the south and east of Ukraine and “changed the course of the war”.

It remained unclear on Tuesday how many, if any, fighters remained at the plant.

While the complete capture of Mariupol would represent Russia’s biggest victory of the war, its invasion has faltered elsewhere.

Most recently, Russian troops around Ukraine’s second-largest city of Kharkiv began retreating at the fastest pace since Russian forces were driven out of the north and the suburbs of the capital Kyiv at the end of March.

Foreign Affairs / Elon Musk Names ‘real’ US President by ClipHog: 11:15pm On May 17, 2022
Billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk has written off US President Joe Biden as an ineffective puppet, insisting that while he has voted “overwhelmingly for Democrats” in the past, the party has spiraled downwards.

“The real president is whoever controls the teleprompter,” the SpaceX CEO observed during a Monday podcast, declaring “the path to power is the path to the teleprompter.”

“I do feel like if somebody were to accidentally lean on the teleprompter, it’s going to be like Anchorman,” he continued, referencing the 2004 film whose lead character read whatever was written on the teleprompter no matter how absurd or detrimental to his own career.

Despite his stated support for Democrats, Musk spared some favorable words for the previous president, pointing out that the Biden administration “doesn’t seem to get a lot done” while “the Trump administration, leaving Trump aside, there were a lot of people in the administration who were effective at getting things done.”

Worse, the Democratic Party is “overly controlled by the unions and by the trial lawyers, particularly the class action lawyers,” Musk argued, claiming that when the party goes against “the interests of the people,” it is motivated by those groups, while Republicans acting similarly are motivated “because of corporate evil and religious zealotry.” Biden, unlike another Democratic president Barack Obama, “is simply too much captured by the unions,” he said. Musk’s animosity toward unionization at his companies is well-known, with Tesla previously found guilty of sabotaging organizing efforts.
Musk also complained about the US’ record-high inflation and the government’s apparent failure to understand its causes, noting that the “obvious reason” for the phenomenon was “that the government printed a zillion amount of more money than it had, obviously,” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The government can’t just you know, issue checks far in excess of revenue without there being inflation…if the federal government writes checks, they never bounce. So that is effectively the creation of more dollars. And if there are more dollars created, then the increase in goods and services across the economy, then you have inflation.” The concept, the world’s richest man argued, was “just very basic” and “not like, you know, super complicated.”

“If the government could just issue massive amounts of money and deficits didn’t matter, then, well, why don’t we just make the deficit 100 times bigger? The answer is you can’t because it will basically turn the dollar into something that is worthless,” Musk said, hinting that “various countries” had “tried this experiment multiple times.” He held up Venezuela as an example of a nation where the “poor, poor people” have “been just run roughshod by their government,” neglecting to mention the crippling sanctions imposed by the US that have prevented Caracas from doing business with most of the world, resulting in economic catastrophe and tens of thousands of deaths from 2017 to 2018 alone. Along with the downfall of the Democratic Party, Musk lamented the decline of Twitter, the acquisition of which has not yet been completed pending questions about managing bots and spam on the platform. The world desperately needed a platform where people could “debate issues of all kinds, including the most substantive issues,” Musk argued, insisting it should be “as broadly inclusive as possible” and “balanced from a political standpoint,” rather than its current status with a “very far left bias.”
