Jazakallahu Khyran sis for this timely reminder.

Also travelling with other women does not remove the need for a mahram.

Wa iyyakum sis. This cannot be over-emphasized, as so many dangers could be involved in the cause of travel. And as a woman, we can be helpless and feeble in such difficult situation.

Thats why Islam is there to take care of women, protect their honour, respect them and regard them as precious pearls that must be protected from evil. May Allah protect all muslim women across the globe.

Islam for Muslims / Etiquette Of Travelling For Women by Coccoh(f): 7:13am On Aug 10, 2017
Abu Hurairah (Radi'Allahu 'anhu) reported: Allah's Messenger (Sallalahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, ' It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to make a journey of one day and night unless she is accompanied by a mahram( husband or any other relative to whom she is prohibited to marry)."
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

This hadith offers four points.....

First, it mentions a twenty four hour journey. 'Ulama', therefore say that the time limits matters and the real point is the length of distance to be called journey. A woman is not allowed to travel unless she is accompanied by her husband or a mahram.

Second, Hajj is obligatory on her provided she has no financial problem. If a woman has no husband or Mahram, Hajj is not obligatory on her. Neither can she go for a Hajj with a group of women, whether for Hajj or any other purpose.

Third, the term Mahram, apart from husband, applies to all of her male siblings whom she cannot marry; these include the father, the son, the brother, the nephew, the son-in-law and the foster-father. She cannot travel with anybody but with any of these.

Fourth, when she goes out, she should wear Jilbaab(an outer garment) so that no part of her body should be visible. Moreover, perfume must not be used by her, wearing perfume in public by women is tantamount to fornication, nor should the jingling of her ornaments be audible to others.

Ibn 'Abbas (Radi-Allahu 'anhu) also reported: The prophet (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said, " No man must be alone with a woman except in the presence of her (Mahram). No woman should travel except in company of a Mahram. " A man said: "O Allah's Messenger! I have been enrolled for such and such expedition, and my wife left for Hajj." He (Sallalahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) said to him, " Go and perfom Hajj with your wife."
(Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

This Hadith proves that under no circumstance woman may travel alone. The Shari'ah strictly bans a meeting of this kind between two opposite sexes. Even if nothing objectionable happens, a mischievous person may exploit this situation and talk about them slanderously. Families disregardful of Hijab provide instances of illicit relationship between a man and a woman related to each other.

Jahilliya in Me?

“Once when Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, in a fit of anger, called Bilal, ‘You son of a black woman,’ the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) turned angrily to him and said, ‘You are a man who still has Jahilliya in him.’ Abu Dharr immediately put his head on the ground at Bilal’s feet in a gesture of humility and refused to lift his head until Bilal had stepped over it.” [Bukhari]

Jahilliya refers to the period of ignorance that preceded Islam. In this ignorance people buried their daughters alive; ten men with one woman was a type of marriage; people killed others for generations just to maintain the superiority of their tribe… In other words, bereft of Allah’s guidance, they lived disgusting lives, not acknowledging Allah’s rights over them nor knowing how to live decently with other people.

One of the hallmarks of this period was the condescension with which people viewed each other, each culture, ethnicity, tribe, and nation, held itself in higher esteem than others. One of the criteria of distinction was to be fair skinned as opposed to coloured or black.

This incident that took place between Abu Dharr Ghifari (radi Allahu anhu) and Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) cautions me to look inside and check myself for the remnants of Jahilliya. I should ask myself:

Do I consider myself superior to others because I look better or speak better?
Do I hold myself in higher esteem than others because I enjoy a certain wordly status?
Do I genuinely honour each person who is more fearful of Allah than myself, regardless of their appearance and possessions?
Is Allah’s opinion of me the only thing that matters to me?
Do I have the Jahilliya (ignorance) of nationalism or ethnicism or racism in me?
Can I behave like the great Sahabah, who when they sinned, immediately repented, cleansed themselves of their errors, and begged for forgiveness?

These are questions we should constantly ask ourselves.

Who is Better?

“A man was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) for his worship and his striving in it, and another man was mentioned for his cautious piety. So the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: ‘Nothing is equal to cautious piety.’” [Jami at-Tirmidhi]

Who is better?

On one hand is a man who works hard on his supererogatory acts of worship, performing Sunnah, Nafl, and Tahajjud prayers, reciting the Quran, doing much Dhikr, but not staying clear of Haraam or doubtful matters. On the other hand is a man who performs the Fard acts of worship and not much of the supererogatory, but is careful not to approach the limits set by Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), and stays clear of Haraam, Makruh and doubtful matters.

This hadith tells us that the person who is careful in refraining from things displeasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) is far better than the one who exerts himself in acts of worship but also indulges in matters of questionable lawfulness.

Honest Trader is Companion of Prophets

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “A truthful and honest trader will be a companion of the prophets, the righteous and the martyrs on the Day of Judgement.” [Tirmidhi]

Be honest and trustworthy in your business dealings. Do not turn your lawful earnings into unlawful income by supplying defective goods, by indulging in profiteering, or by lying.

The reward for honesty in business transactions is fantastic. Through this honesty you can gain the companionship of the best people who walked the surface of the earth.

We are willing to go to such great lengths to be able to hang out with the influential. Honesty in business dealings is a very small price to pay in return for which we may be blessed with the companionship that all of mankind will be dieing to have on the Day of Judgement.

You will in any case make only as much money as is written in your Rizq. Don’t let the Day of Judgement become “Yaum al-Hasara – The Day of Regret” for you. Control yourself now, so that you don’t end up wishing on that greatest of days that you had done better in the world.
