As the year is going to an end we decided to carry out a proper and thorough research on the most popular Nigerian public figures on social media for the year.

As you all know when we are talking about the social media it includes Facebook,Twitter,Instagram And YouTube. So those are the platforms we used in calculating and rating out this list.

We added the total number of the followers they have on each of the social media platforms mentioned above.

The celebrities on the list are quite known by people so we won't say much about them.

Note:This list was rated based on the numbers of fans they have in their social ,media accounts as of October 2015, and the figures were also rounded up.

FULL CONFESSION AND APOLOGY

1. My names are Diepreye Solomon Peter (DSP) Alamieyeseigha. I am a former Governor of Bayelsa state, 29 May 1999- December 2005.

2. I am a powerful Nigerian politician, known as Governor General in ‘Ijaw nation’ of Nigeria’s oil rich Niger Delta; but have also been an ex convict, international fugitive, forger, and I have also jumped bail in London.

3. To refresh your memory, when I became Governor of Bayelsa State in Nigeria, I declared assets totaling US$575,000 and stated I had an annual income of N1,500,000 (US$12,000).

4. I was arrested at Heathrow Airport in September 2005 by the London Metropolitan police on charges of money laundering in September 2005. About £1m cash was found in my London home. Another £1.8m ($3.2m) was found in my bank accounts.

5. I was initially remanded in prison, and lumped in the same cell with a mad man. The Britons must have thought I was also a ‘mad man’ to have stolen so much.

6. I was later granted bail. But in breach of my 1.25 million pound bond, I jumped bail in December 2005, escaped from London with forged documents by disguising myself as a woman, and returned to Nigeria. It was like a movie.

7. The Bayelsa State House of Assembly in Nigeria served me a Notice of Impeachment on November 22, 2005. My offences included:

a. Maintaining foreign bank accounts while in office in the following banks viz: Barclays Bank Plc, London; National Westminster Bank, London; Royal Bank Of Scotland; and Commerz Bank, London contrary to the clear provisions of Paragraph 3 of the Fifth Schedule (Part 1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 the provisions of which I swore on oath to uphold.

b. Corrupt enrichment of my wife and children namely: Mr. Enetonbra Alamieyeseigha, Mr. Seleake Alam1eyeseigha, and Miss Embeleakpo Alamieyeseigha as disclosed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

c. Criminal diversion and misappropriation of public funds to facilitate acquisition of One billion Naira shares in Bond Bank PLc by private placement;

d. Purchase of Chelsea Hotel, Abuja for the sum of Two billion naira and;

e. Acquisition of £ 1 0 Million worth of properties in London.

a. That I brought the exalted office of the governor of Bayelsa State to disrepute, odium and ridicule by jumping a London bail and returning to Nigeria dressed like a masquerade.

b. That I am an International fugitive as the Scotland Yard may issued a warrant of arrest against me which will embarrass the people of Bayelsa.

c. That by this ignominious conduct Bayelsans and indeed all Nigerians have been scandalized, embarrassed and depicted as people whose word cannot be relied upon.

d. That I jeopardized the safety and besmirched the reputation of Nigerians living in or visiting The United Kingdom.

e. That I dealt a severe blow to the Ijaw Nation of which Bayelsa is part, who traditionally takes great pride in the meaning of their name – Ijaw —- truth.

f. That by jumping bail Chief I breached my oath to respect international law.

9. The Bayelsa State House of Assembly subsequently impeached me from office on December 8, 2005 after adopting the report of the seven-man impeachment panel set up by the Chief Justice of Bayelsa State, Emmanuel Igonarwari. I was found me guilty of gross misconduct.

10. Subsequently, I was arrested by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), questioned, and charged with numerous money laundering and corruption offences.

11. The offences against me were overwhelmingly, and on 26 July 2007 I was sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty before a Nigerian High Court to six charges of making false declaration of assets, and 23 charges of money laundering by my company. (See Ruling in FRN v Alamieyeseigha). Besides the jail sentences, the court ordered that my assets, including N1 billion shares be forfeited.

12. On December 13, 2005, the Federal Government filed a fresh 17-count charge against me at the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Kaduna. The charges included that as Governor of Bayelsa State between 29th May 1999 and 9th December 2005, I maintained and operated the following foreign personal bank accounts-

a. Account number 10659347 with Barclays Bank Plc, United Kingdom with a balance of GBP203,753.34 as at 15th February 2005;

b. Account number 3239940 with UBS Warburg AG, 1 Curzon Street, London, W1J 5HB with a balance of $2.5 million as at September 2005; account number 338931 in the name of FALCON INC. with UBS Warburg AG, 1 Curzon Street, London, W1J 5HB;

c. Account number 7341553/7341596 FOR us dollars with Barclays Bank Plc at International Banking Unit, 88 Dighemis Akritas Avenue 1644, Nicosla, Cyprus; account number 7341588 for GB pounds Sterling with Barclays Bank Plc at International Banking Unit, 88 Dighemis Akrltas Avenue 1644, Nicosia, Cyprus ;

d. Bank account number 5005220454-7 in Denmark with JYSKE Bank at Bseterbrogate, 9, DK-1780, Copeenhagen V with a balance of at $2.5 million;

e. Bank account number 005482562491 with Bank of America United States of America in the name of Peter Aklamleyeseigh with a balance of $160,000.00 all contrary to section 7 and punishable under section 23 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. Cap. 56 LFN 1990 as incorporated under paragraph 11, part 1, fifth schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

That I made a false declaration by not declaring the following properties:

a. Property known as Water Gardens, London W2 2DG which I bought at GBP1.75 million in the name of my company known as Solomon & Peters Ltd;

b. Property at 14 Mapesbury Road, London, NW2 4JB which you bought at GBP1.4 million;

c. Property at 14 Jubilee Heights, School Uphill, London, NW2 2UQ, which you bought at GBP241,000;

d. Property at No. 68-70, Regent’s Road, London, N3 bought at 3 million Pounds Sterling.

That I Chief Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha while being the Governor of Bayelsa State between 29th May 1999 and 9th December 2005 acquired:

a. Property known as Chelsea Hotel Abuja worth of N2 Billion for which N1.5 Billion was paid;

b. Acquired two block of luxury flats at Plot 26 Bashir Dalhatu Close, Abacha Estate, Ikoyi worth of N45;

c. Acquired a property at John Kadiya Street, off Jose Marti Crescent, Asokoro, Abuja worth N350; million;

d. Acquired an Estate of six luxury duplexes at No. 1 Community, Road, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos worth N200 million

e. Failed to declare One Billion Naira worth of Shares acquired in Bond bank

f. Failed to declare the following properties:-

• Plot 916 & 917, Wuse II District, Abuja

• Plot 7, Cadastral Zone A6, Maltama Abuja

• Plot1267, Amazon Road, Abuja

• Plot 3375, cadastral Zone A6, Abuj

• Plot 1372-1374, Cadastral Zone A7, Wuse II, Abuja

• Plot 1281, cadastral Zone A4, Asokoro, Abuja

Thereby I committed an offence contrary to section 15(2) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. Cap. 56 LFN 1990 as incorporated under paragraph 11, part 1, fifth schedule of the 1999 Constitution and punishable under section 23 of the Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

13. Independent investigations carried out by the commission also revealed the following:

a. That I held a personal bank account with Barclays Bank Plc which was opened on 5 January 2004 and the balance stood at £203,753.34 as at 15th February 2005.

b. A personal bank account with HSBC, London, but the account was closed sometimes in March 2003 while all the money in the account was transferred to Santolina Investment Corporation’s account with National Westminster Bank, London.

c. I am the sole Director of Santolina Investment Corporation and sole signatory to the company’s account with National Westminster Bank with A/c No. 10182819 Sort Code 15-00-25 in London

d. I held personal account with Bond Bank in Lagos which was opened sometimes in January 2004 and the balance stood at N105-14.942.61 as at 16th September 2005 and another personal account in Oceanic Bank Plc (The Salo Trust) in the names of Enitonbrapa Alamieyeseigha, Embelakpo Alamieyeseigha, Ebipadei Alamieyeseigha, Oyamuyefa Alamieyeseigha, Saleaka Alamieyeseigha and Margaret Alamieyeseigha.

e. I held an account with Bank of America in the name of Peter Alamieyeseigha with account number 0054 8256 2491 which balance stood at $1, 600,000.00 as at August 2003.

f. I am a Director of an offshore company named Solomon & Peters Ltd (two middle names) and there are four (4) London properties bought and registered in the company’s name. These properties are:

• 247, Water Gardens, London, W2 2DG, which is the registered

address of Solomon & Peters Ltd. This property was purchased

for £1.75 million on 20/8/2003

• 14, Mapesbury Road, London, NW2 4JB. This property was

purchased for £1.4 million on 6/7/2001.

• Flat 202, Jubilee Heights, Shoot uphill, London, NW2 3LJQ,

purchased for the sum of £241,000.00 on 28/10/99.

• 68-70, Regent’s Park Road, London, N3 which was purchased in

July 2002 for the sum of £3 million.

• All the properties listed above have a combined value in excess of £S 381million

• A property at V & A Waterfront, Cape Town, South Africa worth over £1 millon.

• I own Royal Albatross Properties 67 a company registered in September 2005 in Cape Town, South Africa.

• I am the owner of a property in 504, Pleasant Drive, King Farm Estate, Maryland USA, and another one in 15859, Aurora Crest Drive, Whither, California, USA, 906

14. According to World Bank’s State Asset Recovery case (STAR), between May 1999 when I was elected Governor of Bayelsa state and December 2005 when I was impeached, I illegally accumulated (outside Nigeria) known properties, bank accounts, investments and cash exceeding £10m in value. The STAR case against me reads in part,

“Between the start of his period of office in May 1999, to late 2005, Alamieyeseigha accumulated (outside Nigeria) known properties, bank accounts, investments and cash exceeding £10m in value. His portfolio of foreign assets included accounts with five banks in the UK and further accounts with banks in Cyprus, Denmark and the United States; four London properties acquired for a total of £4.8m; a Cape Town harbour penthouse acquired for almost £1m, possible assets in the United States, and almost £1m in cash stored in one of his London properties. Some of the foreign assets were held in his name and that of his wife, but the bulk of them were held by companies and trusts incorporated in the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, South Africa, and Seychelle.’

15. In July 2006, British authorities returned $1.9 million of the illicit gains I made as Governor of oil-rich Bayelsa state in Nigeria.

16. On 2 July 2008, Nigeria obtained judgment over my stolen assets in London, Cyprus and Denmark.

17. On June 29, 2011, the US federal district judge in the state of Massachusetts ordered that I should forfeit the sum of N60m ($401,931) to the United States Government. I stole the amount from Bayelsa State between 1999 to 2005 and secretly kept it at a Massachusetts brokerage fund, before it was discovered by US prosecutors. I also lost another house I acquired in the state of Maryland, valued at N90m ($600,000) house that Alamieyesigha bought in the state of Maryland.

18. I also lost my properties in several other countries. In February 2006, the Asset Forfeiture Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa secured a court order to freeze my residential property on the Cape Town waterfront. I was found guilty of stealing N1.499 billion (USD11 million) from Bayelsa treasury to buy Chelsea Hotel Ltd in Abuja

19. I am still being probed by the governments of Britain, United States, South Africa, Bahamas and Seychelles as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Bank under the Stolen Assets Recovery Initiative (STAR) case.

DEATH

On 10 October 2015, he reportedly died at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital after a brief illness.

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was born in 16 November 1952 in Amassoma, Ogboin North Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. He attended the Bishop Dimeari Grammar School, Yenagoa. He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a Cadet Officer in 1974, then joined the Nigerian Air Force, where he served in the department of Logistics and Supply. He held various air force positions inEnugu, Markurdi, Kaduna and Ikeja. Alamieyeseigha retired from the air force in 1992 as a Squadron Leader.

After leaving the air force he became the Sole Administrator of Pabod Supplies Port Harcourt. Later he became Head of Budget, Planning, Research and Development of the National Fertiliser Company (NAFCON).

POLITICAL CAREER AND LIFE

Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was elected Governor of Bayelsa State in May 1999 as a member of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was re-elected in 2003. Vice President Atiku Abubakar attended the March 2003 event that kicked of his campaign for reelection in 2003.

MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES


Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was detained in London on charges of money laundering in September 2005. At the time of his arrest, Metropolitan police found about £1m in cash in his London home. Later they found a total of £1.8m ($3.2m) in cash and bank accounts. He has been found to own real estate in London worth an alleged £10 million. His state’s monthly federal allocation for the last six years has been in the order of £32 million. He jumped bail in December 2005 from the United Kingdom by allegedly disguising himself as a woman, though Alamieyeseigha denies this claim.


In July 2007, Alamieyeseigha pleaded guilty before a Nigerian court to six charges and was sentenced to two years in prison on each charge; however, because the sentences were set to run concurrently and the time was counted from the point of his arrest nearly two years before the sentences, his actual sentence was relatively short. Many of his assets were ordered to be forfeited to the Bayelsa state government. According to Alamieyeseigha, he only pled guilty due to his age and would have fought the charges had he been younger. On July 27, just hours after being taken to prison, he was released due to time already served.

In April 2009, Alamieyeseigha pledged a donation of 3,000,000 Naira to the Akassa Development Foundation.

In December 2009, the federal government hired a British law firm to help dispose of four expensive properties acquired by Alamieyeseigha in London. Alamieyeseigha had bought one of these properties for £1,750,000.00 in July 2003, paying in cash. Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha used it as his London residence, and as the registered office of Solomon and Peters Inc.

On June 28, 2012, the United States (US) Department of Justice (DoJ) announced that it had executed an asset forfeiture order on $401,931 in a Massachusetts brokerage fund, traceable to Alamieyeseigha. US prosecutors filed court papers in April 2011 targeting the Massachusetts brokerage fund and a $600,000 Maryland home, which they alleged were the proceeds of corruption. A motion for default judgement and civil forfeiture was granted by a Massachusetts federal district judge in early June 2012. The forfeiture order was the first to be made under the DoJ’s fledgling Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.

Presidential Pardon:

In March 2013, Alamieyeseigha was pardoned by President Goodluck Jonathan, but his pardoning was criticised by so many Nigerians.

Dr. Azikiwe, an Ibo from southeast Nigeria, presided over a democratic Government that was in power for a mere three years before the regional tensions that have marked the country's politics ever since led to the first of many military coups. But as a lawyer, political scientist, journalist, political activist, President and for many years Nigeria's elder statesman, Dr. Azikiwe towered over the affairs of Africa's most populous nation, attaining the rare status of a truly national hero who came to be admired across the regional and ethnic lines dividing his country.
After years of agitation for nationhood, Dr. Azikiwe became Governor General of the Nigerian Federation at independence from Britain in 1960, and President in 1963, when the country was declared a republic.

While in office, he introduced universal adult suffrage and moved to extend schooling throughout the country.
When Nigeria's civil war erupted in 1967, after a disastrous attempt at secession led by the Ibo general Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Dr. Azikiwe broke ranks with leaders from his own ethnic group who supported the bid to form an independent nation called Biafra.

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND

Azikiwe was born in Zungeru, Northern Nigeria. His parents were Igbo; his father Obed-Edom Chukwuemeka Azikiwe (1879–1958), a clerk in the British Administration of Nigeria and his mother was Rachel Chinwe Azikiwe. Nnamdi means "My father is alive" in the Igbo language. After studying at Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar.
and Methodist Boys High School Lagos, Azikiwe went to the United States. While there he attended Howard University, Washington DC.

He arrived in the United States in 1925, where he attended several schools. Azikiwe earned multiple certificates and degrees, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a second master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
He worked as an instructor at Lincoln before returning to Nigeria.

In 1934 he went to the Gold Coast (now Ghana), where he founded a nationalist newspaper and was a mentor to Kwame Nkrumah (later the first president of Ghana) before returning to Nigeria in 1937. There he founded and edited newspapers and also became directly involved in politics, first with the Nigerian Youth Movement and later (1944) as a founder of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC).


CAREER AND HEROIC WORKS

As a result of publishing an article on 15 May 1936, entitled "Has the African a God?" written by I. T. A. Wallace-Johnson he was brought to trial on charges of sedition. Although he was found guilty of the charges and sentenced to six months in prison, he was acquitted on appeal. He returned to Lagos, Nigeria, in 1937 and founded the West African Pilot, which he used as a vehicle to foster Nigerian nationalism. He founded the Zik Group of Newspapers, publishing multiple newspapers in cities across the country. Azikiwe became active in the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM), the first genuinely nationalist organization in Nigeria. However, in 1941 he backed Samuel Akinsanya to be NYM candidate for a vacant seat in the Legislative Council, but the executive selected Ernest Ikoli instead. Azikiwe resigned from the NYM accusing the NYM mostly Yoruba leadership of discrimination against the Ijebu-Yoruba members, Ibos and some Ijebu members with him and thus splitting the NYM along ethnic lines.

After a successful journalism enterprise, Azikiwe entered into politics, co-founding the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) alongside Herbert Macaulay in 1944. He became the secretary-general of the National Council in 1946, and was elected to Legislative Council of Nigeria the following year. In 1951, he became the leader of the Opposition to the government of Obafemi Awolowo in the Western Region's House of Assembly after losing the four-cornered elections to the Action Group. In 1952, he moved to the Eastern Region, and was elected to the position of Chief Minister and in 1954 became Premier of Nigeria's Eastern Region. On 16 November 1960, he became the Governor General, with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as Prime Minister. On the same day became the first Nigerian named to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. With the proclamation of a republic in 1963, he became the first President of Nigeria. In both posts, Azikiwe's role was largely ceremonial.


Azikiwe and his civilian colleagues were removed from power in the military coup of 15 January 1966. He was the most prominent politician to escape the spate of assassinations following the coup. During the Biafran (1967–1970) war of secession, Azikiwe became a spokesman for the nascent republic and an adviser to its leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. He switched allegiance back to Nigeria during the war and publicly appealed to Ojukwu to end the war in pamphlets and interviews published at the time.
After the war, he served as Chancellor of University of Lagos from 1972 to 1976. He joined the Nigerian People's Party in 1978, making unsuccessful bids for the presidency in 1979 and again in 1983. He left politics involuntarily after the military coup on 31 December 1983. He died on 11 May 1996, at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, in Enugu, Enugu State, after a protracted illness. He was buried in his native Onitsha.


ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERSONAL LIFE

He was inducted into the prestigious Agbalanze society of Onitsha as Nnayelugo in 1946, a customary recognition for Onitsha men of significant accomplishment. Then, in 1962, he became a second-rank red cap chieftain or Ndichie Okwa as the Oziziani Obi. In 1972, he was installed as the Owelle-Osowa-Anya of Onitsha, making him a first-rank, hereditary red cap nobleman or Ndichie Ume.

In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II appointed him to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. He was conferred with the highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in 1980. He has received fourteen honorary degrees from Nigerian, American and Liberian universities, which include Lincoln University, Storer College, Howard University, Michigan State University, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Ibadan, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and University of Liberia.

INTRODUCTION

Amina of Zaria commonly known as the warrior queen, expanded the territory of the Hausa people of north Africa to the largest borders in history. More than 400 years later, the legend of her became the model for a television series about a fictional warrior princess, called Xena.

Amina was the warrior queen of Zazzau (now Zaria). She is known also as Amina Sarauniya Zazzau. She lived approximately 200 years prior to the establishment of the Sokoto-Caliphate federation that governed Nigeria during the period of British colonial rule following the Islamic jahad (holy war) that overtook the region in the nineteenth century. According to most accounts, Queen Amina ruled for 34 years at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Her domain of Zazzau, a city-state of Hausaland, was eventually renamed to Zaria and is the capital of the present-day emirate of Kaduna in Nigeria. Although many details of her life remain largely in dispute among historians, the fact that she existed is a matter of general acceptance, and she is presumed to have been a Moslem ruler. Much of what is known of Queen Amina is based on information related in the Kano Chronicles, a translation by Muhammed Bellow of pre-colonial African tradition based in part on anonymous Hausa writings. Other details were pulled from the oral traditions of Nigeria. As a result, the memory of Queen Amina assumed legendary proportions in her native Hausaland and beyond. The extent of her military prowess and her performance in battle was augmented by lore and remains unclear.

The reign of Amina occurred at a time when the city-state of Zazzau was situated at the crossroad of three major trade corridors of northern Africa, connecting the region of the Sahara with the remote markets of the southern forest lands and the western Sudan. It was the rise and fall of the powerful and more dominant Songhai (var. Songhay) people and the resulting competition for control of trade routes that incited continual warring among the Hausa people and the neighboring settlements during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It was not until later that a ruling arrangement between the Hausa and the Fulani people ultimately brought a lasting peace to the region and survived into the colonial era of the nineteenth century.

EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND


Amina was the twenty-fourth habe, as the rulers of Zazzau were called. She is believed to have been the granddaughter of King Zazzau Nohir. Speculation suggests that she was born sometime during his reign, around 1533. This theory lends credence to the belief that Amina ruled Zazzau at the end of the sixteenth century. The citizens of Hausaland at that time displayed advanced skills in the industrial arts of tanning, weaving, and metalworking—in contrast to the inhabitants of the neighboring territories and surrounding cultures, where agriculture remained the dominant activity. The Hausa social hierarchy, as a result, was bound less rigidly in the social standings of tradition, which were based on hereditary factors.

Amina was born the eldest of three royal siblings. She was 16 years old when her noble parent, the powerful Bakwa of Turunku (var. Barkwa Turunda), inherited the throne of Zazzau. Historical accounts of Bakwa, the twenty-second habe of Zazzau, vary as to whether Bakwa was Amina's father or mother. Although the reign of Bakwa was known for peace and prosperity, the history of the Hausa people was nonetheless characterized by military campaigns for the purpose of increasing commerce. During the years between 1200-1700 Hausaland was, in fact, fraught with warring parties. These descended into neighboring territories that were inhabited by the Jukun and the Nupe to the south, in an effort to control trade and to expand the Hausa communities into more desirable environs. The Hausa, in turn, were conquered intermittently during those years by various other peoples. The Mali, Fulani, and Bornu were among the aggressors in these clashes. During the reign of Bakwa, the teenaged Amina occupied herself in honing her battle skills, under the guidance of the soldiers of the Zazzau military.

As was the custom of the region, the rule of Zazzau fell to Amina's brother, Karama, upon the death of Bakwa in 1566. Although Karama was the younger of the two, it was the male heir who took precedence in ascending the throne. The third sibling, a sister named Zaria, eventually fled the region. By the time that Amina assumed the throne, following the death of her brother in the tenth year of his rule, she had matured into a fierce warrior and had earned the respect of the Zazzau military. Amina, in fact, established her dominance as the head of the Zazzau cavalry even before she came to rule the city-state.


HER INFLUENTIAL AND LEGENDARY WORKS

BATTLE
Within three months of inheriting the throne, Queen Amina embarked on what was to be the first in an ongoing series of military engagements associated with her rule. She stood in command of an immense military band and personally led the cavalry of Zazzau through an ongoing series of campaigns, waging battle continually throughout the course of her sovereignty.

She spent the duration of her 34-year reign in military aggression. Although the military campaigns of Amina were characterized as efforts to ensure safe passage for Zazzau and other Hausa traders throughout the Saharan region, the practice proved effective in significantly expanding the limits of Zazzau territory to the largest boundaries before and since. African chronicler, P. J. M. McEwan quoted the Kano Chronicles, which stated that Amina, "conquered all the towns as far as Kwararafa [to the north] and Nupe [in the south]."

According to all indications, she came to dominate much of the region known as Hausaland and beyond, throughout an area called Kasashen Bauchi, prior to the settlement of the so-called Gwandarawa Hausas of Kano in the mid 1600s. Kasashen Bauchi in modern terms comprises the middle belt of Nigeria. In addition to Zazzau, the city-states of central Hausaland included Rano, Kano, Daura, Gobir, and Katsina.

At one time, Amina dominated the entire area, along with the associated trade routes connecting the western Sudan with Egypt on the east and Mali in the north. In keeping with the custom of the times, she collected tributes of kola nuts and male slaves from her subject cities. Also, as was the custom of the Hausa people, Amina built walls around the encampments of the territories that she conquered. Some of the walls survived into modern times; thus her legacy remained entrenched in both the culture and landscape of her native Hausa city-states.

Some have suggested that a neighboring Hausa king, named Sarkin Kanajeji, held Amina at a serious disadvantage in waging battle against his army, because Kanajeji's soldiers wore iron helmets for protection. Others, however, have credited Amina with the introduction of metal armor, including the iron helmets and chain mail. It has been further suggested that she was responsible for the introduction of the new armor to the Hausa city-state of Kano. Regardless of its origin, the innovation of protective armor arrived in Hausaland during the era of Amina. Because the Hausa of Zazzau were well skilled in the metalworking crafts, it is not unreasonable to infer that Amina's army was well protected by body armor.

Some historians have credited Amina with originating the Hausa practice of building the military encampments behind fortress walls. A 15-kilometer wall surrounding the modern-day city of Zaria dates back to Amina and is known as ganuwar Amina (Amina's wall). Additionally, a distinctive series of walls wind throughout the countryside in the vicinities of the ancient city-states of Hausaland. These came to be called Amina's walls to the rest of the world, although not all of the walls were built during the reign of Amina.


HER LEGEND

Information about the history of Hausaland during the era of Amina is sketchy. Foreign visitors who traveled to Africa during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries collected many of the historical accounts of those times. Other information was garnered from the oral traditions of the descendants of the early Hausa people.

Historians J. F. Ajayi and Michael Crowder suggested that Amina lived in the fifteenth century rather than the sixteenth century. Ajayi and Crowder attribute their conclusion to information found in Bellow's Chronicle. The chronicles, which are believed to portray the history of Africa with some accuracy, date Amina back to the time of Sarki (king) Dauda whose father was believed to have ruled from 1421 until 1438. In this regard there may be some confusion with the reign of Da'ud, conqueror of Macina, who ruled from 1549 until 1582. Ajayi suggested that Hausaland suffered desperately from severe aggression from Songhai to the west during the sixteenth century, and it may be unlikely that the expansionist policies of Amina prevailed at such a difficult time. Likewise reports that Amina collected tribute from Bornu may be improbable in the context of the sixteenth century, as Zaria and many other Hausa city-states had, by that time, fallen to the control of Songhai and had suffered further aggression from Bornu to the east. Such domination by Songhai and Bornu, if depicted with accuracy, preclude the possibility that the Hausa achieved extensive domination during the reign of Amina, if indeed she lived at the end of the sixteenth century.

The dearth of facts combined with the significance of the conquests of Amina have defined a legendary persona for the warrior queen of Nigeria.
