Church of Englandendorses gay bishops The Church of England has dropped its opposition to gay clergymen in civil partnerships becoming bishops, it confirmed Friday. The announcement by the church’s House of Bishops would allow a homosexual clergyman in a civil partnership to become a bishop as long as he promised to remain celibate. “The House has confirmed that clergy in civil partnerships, and living in accordance with the teaching of the Church on human sexuality, can be considered as candidates for the episcopate,” said the Bishop of Norwich, Graham James. The issue has divided England’s state church since 2003, when gay priest Jeffrey John was named bishop of Reading, in southeast England. The move outraged conservatives within England’s state church, and John was forced to resign. He was also a candidate for bishop of Southwark in London in 2010, but traditionalists again blocked his appointment. All clergywomen, regardless of their sexuality, remain banned from becoming bishops in the Church of England after its governing body, the General Synod, failed to vote through the change in November. Gay men and women who are in civil partnerships — legal unions giving them similar rights to those of married couples — have been allowed to join the clergy since 2005 so long as they vow to remain celibate. The church has spent the past 18 months determiningwhether the conditions should also apply to gay clergymen who wish to become bishops. The House of Bishops announced the change on December 20 but it was brought to light by the Church Times, an Anglican newspaper, on Friday. |

Family of five die after eating New Year feast. There was tension in Robiyan village, Abule bus stop, in Ifo local government area, Ogun state yesterday, https://cdn.dailypost.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Five-found-dead-300x225.jpg following the tragic death of 7 family members. Five of them were found dead in the house while four others who were gasping for breath were rushed to the hospital for treatment, however two of the four died before they could be treated. As at the time our reporter got there, the bodies had been movedbut eye witnesses claimed that the bodies had foams in their mouths. The deceased were identified as a70-year old woman, her two sonsand her grandchildren who were spending the holidays with her. One of the witnesses Prophet Wale Adeoyo told DailyPost that the family had embarked on a New Year feast the day before (Wednesday), served neighbours, retired to bed happily only to be found dead today. He said “we all had plenty to eat and drink…and they went to bed with their Generator on. It was Mama’s daughter who raised the alarm at around 7am today…she didn’t sleep in the house because she had to go to supply her customers with fish, she returnedthis morning and sensed danger when no one opened the door after knocking repeatedly. She then shouted for help and we all came out, we had to break in and then we found their dead bodies…” Though, the cause of the sad incident is yet to be ascertained, one of the village elders, popularlyknown as GA said “it is probably food poison from their feast because they were found dead with foams in their mouths when the door to the house was forced opened.” A few others claimed they died as a result of the smoke they inhaledfrom Generator fumes while others claim that it was a spiritualattack. The Baale of the community, Kujore and policemen from Ayinla Police Station were at the scene. Two of the victims were rushed to Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, while others were rushed to Ota General Hospital for treatment. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/01/03/new-year-feast-kills-grandmother-sons-grandchildren/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=new-year-feast-kills-grandmother-sons-grandchildren |

Late Popoola, A sympathiser with the deceased wife, Modupe (right) Dec 25, 2012 – Injustice: LASTMA Officers Killed Bus Driver In Lagos, 2 Officials Beat Man To Death https://punch.jarapages.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Popoola-A-sympathiser-with-the-deceased-wife-Modupe-right-360x225.jpg A commercial bus driver, Isaac Popoola, on Monday died after being allegedly assaulted by two officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority inthe Oshodi area of the state . The bus conductor, Aremu Salawu, who witnessed the incident, said the LASTMA officials,Adesanya Olatunde and Oludele Ogunrinde, assaulted Popoola at about 6.30am around Brown Bus Stop resulting in his death. He said the deceased’s bus with number plate, XL166SNK, conveying 17 passengers from Igando/Isheri was approaching Brown Junction when a LASTMA pick-up van crossed the bus. The leader of the LASTMA officials, according to Salawu, ordered twoof his men to impound the vehicleand take it to the agency’s office. Salawu, who narrated the incident to one of our correspondents on the premisesof the police Area F Command, alleged that Olatunde hit Salawu’s head against the steering and the door frame of the bus many times before he died. He said Popoola, 54, was tussling for the steering with the LASTMA official, who resorted to using themetallic head of the seat belt to hit the driver’s head in an attemptto forcibly take over the bus. Salawu said, “Baba (Popoola) held on to the steering asking what his offence was. But the LASTMA man (Olatunde) said it was his commander that ordered him to seize the bus. “When Baba refused to leave the steering, the LASTMA man started hitting Popoola’s head against thesteering and the door frame. He did this so many times, until he was unable to talk again. “I then rushed to Mosafejo Police Station where I made a statement and people who were watching the scenario were able to apprehend one of the LASTMA men (Olatunde). They brought him to the police station before we were transferred to to Area F . “They did not tell him (driver) what his offence was because no passenger alighted from our bus at a wrong point and he used his seat belt.” As at 4pm when one of our correspondents left the Area F Command, Salawu’s body was still lying in the bus. It was observed that there were no bruises on the head of the deceased. The 50-year-old wife of the deceased, Modupe, and his son, Ibukunoluwa, a graduate of Accounting from the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, along with other sympathisers were also on the premises of the command Ibukunoluwa, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said he had just graduated and awaiting his call-up for the B Batch of the National Youth Service Corps in February 2013. He said his father left their house at 16, Ojo Ogundana Crescent, Off Jimoh Akinremi, Jimoh Bus Stop, Akowonjo, early in the morning of Monday. “I can’t believe I don’t have a father again. My father left home very early this morning, only for us to be informed by his mechanic few hours later that he had died,” Ibukunoluwa said. The management of LASTMA hashowever dissociated itself from the incident. A statement signed by the General Manager of the agency, Babatunde Edu, stated the errant officials acted contrary tothe agency’s operational guidelines. Edu said Olatunde was identified by the agency’s Provost Marshall and handed over to the police while Ogunrinde who was reported to be off duty as at the time of the incident was still at large. He stated that the officials were inthe area to carry out illegal operation. “The arrested suspect (Olatunde) has been handed over to Mosafejo Police Station and eventually transferred to Akinpelu Police Station for further investigation; while effort is on to arrest other suspect (Ogunrinde),” Edu said. Governor of Niger State, Mr. Babangida Aliyu has condemnedthose celebrating the death of Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa, saying it is highly “inhuman” . The Governor who doubles as chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum said this while receiving the Speaker of Niger House of Assembly, Alhaji Adamu Usman, who led other members of the Assembly to commiserate with him on the death of Yakowa. According to Aliyu, “No matter the religion one professes, the simple tenet is that we should sympathise with the dead and the bereaved and pray for the repose of the soul of the departed whose death is a colossal loss.” He described those celebrating the Governor’s demise as “unreligious and inhuman”. He said, “Immediately we start praying for our leaders to die, then we are asking that the whole society should die. We must pray for our leaders. We must go back to our faith and practise our religion as demanded by the almighty Allah. “We must talk to our children. We must be involved in the moral and religious education ofour children. This development shows that we are failing in the duty to train our children.” The governor who described the late Yakowa as a bridge-builder, who brought Muslims and Christians in Kaduna State together, noted that the deceasedprovided peace and tranquillity among residents of the state while he was alive. Meanwhile, Meanwhile the Conference of Islamic Organisations has lamented the death of Yakowa and Azazi. The group in a statement signedby its Coordinator, Imam Abdullahi Shuaibu, and Convener, Sheikh AbdurRahman Ahmad yesterday described the late Yakowa as a servant leader who will forever be remembered. The group said, “Indeed and in truth, the nation has lost some of its finest patriots, gentlemen, peacemakers and bridge builders at a time the Country needed theirservices most in moving it forward.” [Source: DailyPost] |

The 13 people arrested for the Oct ober 5th murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt were meant to appear in court yesterday Thursday December 20th but the trial was stalled due to the failureof prison officials to produce them in court. At the resumed hearing yesterday morning, the prosecutor told the court that the accused persons were in the court cell, but could not be brought in because of shortage of prison personnel. Yes, they actually said that! Shortage of prison personnel? Does that even make sense? The prosecutor also said he was yet to receive any advice on the matter from the Director of Public prosecution to whom the case file was referred. The case was then adjourned till February 28, 2013. The suspects were remanded in prison. Meanwhile the police has arraigned three more persons for the brutal killingof Tekena, Iloyd, Ugonna and Chiadika. They are: Finebone Jeffrey (23), Joshua Ekpe (27), and AbangCyril (27), all a rraigned on a five-count charge of conspiracy and murder The NBA chapter in Port Harcourt, who sent represen tatives to the t r ial yesterday, demanded access to the case file and the court ordered the release of the files to them. A little squeeze may be all that it takes to prevent malignant bosom cells triggering cancer, research has shown. Laboratory experiments showed that applying physical pressure to the cells guided them back to a normal growth pattern. Scientists do not envisage fighting bosom cancerwith a new range of compression bras, but they believe the research provides clues that could lead to new treatments. "People have knownfor centuries that physical force can influence our bodies," said Gautham Venugopalan, a leading member of the researchteam at the University of California in Berkeley, United States. "When we lift weights our muscles get bigger. The force ofgravity is essential to keeping our bones strong. Here we show that physical force can play a role in the growth - and reversion - of cancer cells." The study involved growing malignant bosom epithelial cells within a gel injected into flexible silicone chambers. This allowed the scientists to apply compression during the first stages of cell growth, effectively squashing the cells. Over time, the squeezed malignant cells began to grow in a more normal and organisedway. Once the bosom tissue structure was formed the cells stopped growing, even when the compressive force was removed. Non- compressed cells continued to display the haphazard and uncontrolled growth that leads to cancer."Malignant cells have not completely forgotten how to be healthy; they just need the right cues to guide them back to a healthy growth pattern," said MrVenugopalan, a doctoral student. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Societyfor Cell Biology in San Francisco. Source- http://news.uk.msn.com/health/squeezing-breasts-can-stop-cancer |
