blaise26abj: First off it is tariff not Tarrif . Valid point made but sir , that is not all . Hefty tariffs hurt businesses a lot . Why do you think Nigerian Auto sellers are all out making ads ? Because of the increased fees . You have to be really comfortable to buy a toks car nowadays . The point is while businesses will pass these tariffs down to the consumers , the consumer size for those imported brands will greatly shrink and other local brands with no tariffs will greatly benefit .
Eg imagine coke because of increased tariffs suddenly becomes 1000 Naira per bottle . If they have a steady 50 buyers , they will reduce to 20 . The other 30 will look for cheaper alternatives . In comes Zigi carbonated drinks . Sales for Zigi goes up because they don’t have to deal with the tariffs .
So technically the USA will make a lot of money from the foreign companies while US companies will have improved local sales . The foreign businesses will lose market share and may have to restrategize by opening plants in the US if they want to keep their market shares .
Almost same thing happened to our furniture industry in Nigeria . ... can Americans accept the wages a chinese man will? That changes a lot. The americans are chasing the chinese away from producing in America and now have chased away their imports. It also exposes the age long hypocrisy of Americans toward the weaker nations. They liked the master-servant relation between them and cheap China but once china became a rival and started contesting their supremacy, they kicked china away, first by stifling chinese business within America and now those outside America. |

The tariff war. Imagine all govt imposing hefty tariffs, the cost gets transferred to the final consumer(mostly citizens), then inflates the selling prices as well as adjust supply-demand dynamics. Tarrifs are indirect ways of milking consumers while pretending to hurt the sellers/manufacturers. Very lazy approach to sustainable productivity and growth. |
