Police have seized thousands of scam letters aimed at luring potential British victims into handing over cash to fraudsters. Skip related content Related photos / videos Thousands of scam letters seized Enlarge photo Related content Police suspect murder after youth hit by bus House Fire Kills Four Children In Derbyshire No bail for Jo murder accused Related Hot Topic: Crime Have your say: Crime Investigators said the items are designed to encourage people to invest in fraudulent schemes linked to lotteries, shares and inheritance claims. Overseas crooks attempt to persuade victims to transfer money to them with promises of valuable goods or bigger payouts that are never handed over. Officers at Scotland Yard's economic and specialist crime command intercepted the mailshot as part of a long-running inquiry. It was the first time police have moved to stem the flow of fraudulent junk mail before it reaches the letterboxes of potential victims. Police also shut down five rented post-boxes which are used to dupe victims into believing the companies are reliable and based in London. Those who reply to the first letter, known as a "tempter", are then added to so-called "sucker" lists which are traded among criminals. Victims are often vulnerable people, including the elderly and those suffering illnesses such as dementia. Police believe up to £3.5 billion is stolen from Britons every year, with as much as £2.4 billion being lost as a result of mail scams. Detective Superintendent Mark Ponting, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "The individuals behind this type of crime are cynical and pernicious, making their living by targeting and exploiting some of the most vulnerable and needy people in our society." The investigation began last year when detectives contacted 11 scam mail victims from across Britain who had been repeatedly targeted. They were asked to collect their post and pass it to police, who traced the letters back to their source with the help of Royal Mail and Spring Global Mail. The two companies agreed to alert police when the next shipment of post linked to the same source arrived in Britain. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20110125/tuk-thousands-of-scam-letters-seized-6323e80.html |

A new dimension has been added to moves to reposition some of the bailed-out banks as workers of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc have urged their management not to consider selling the bank as a revival option. The about 6,000 workers made this submission through a three page communiqué which was sent to the management of the bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s last week. The workers indicated that they “strongly oppose any proposal to sell the bank, rather the existing shareholders should be allowed to recapitalize the bank.” BusinessWorld Intelligence can reveal that the workers, who have been expecting reactions on their new position, were asked to be patient as Mrs. Funke Osibodu, managing director, proceeded on a week leave immediately after the submission. The Union Bank Association of Senior Staff (UBASS), a unit Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), our sources said, made the pronouncements after its Central Working Committee and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Asaba last week. The association is believed to have made the suggestions based on its position as “the majority shareholders of Union Bank of Nigeria Plc through holding collectively warehoused shares under the Union Bank Staff Ownership Trust Fund (UBESOT) and Williams Street Trustee.” They claimed that, “By virtue of our position as the majority shareholders, we are aware that the value of the bank’s assets in our books does not reflect the current position which by today’s estimation is in trillions of naira. We feel that these assets should be re-valued to reflect the current market value by real estate valuators and part should be converted to liquidity assets to enhance the bank’s liquidity position thereafter”. Our investigations reveal that the following resolutions are part of the communiqué that was handed to the management and relevant regulatory institutions: •workers are not averse to provisioning for non-performing credits but management must avoid over-provisioning which can paint ugly picture of the bank •Workers strongly oppose any proposal to sell the bank, rather the existing shareholders should be allowed to recapitalize the bank at the earliest time •Urge management to focus attention on fund mobilization and give hope to the customers •That all actions that relate to the rights and privileges of staff must be in line with the collective agreement with the unions. •Workers have reviewed the various cost-saving measures and advised that it should not hinder service delivery. http://businessworldng.com/web/articles/1024/1/Workers-Oppose-Sale-of-Union-Bank/Page1.html |
Spring Bank restructures, lays-off workers Spring Bank restructures, lays-off workers By Dele Fanimo THE gale of retrenchment sweeping through the banking industry appears yet to abate, as it claimed about 200 jobs in Spring Bank Plc, even as the Labour movement tries to halt the tide. Specifically, Spring Bank began job cut early this month, claiming that only those whose performance fell below expectation would be eased out of the system. Although, a statement signed by the Group Executive, Brand Management of the bank, Mr Igwe U. Igwe failed to disclose the actual number of workers affected, an insider in the bank who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed that the number was close to 200 and not more. Spring Bank is not the only bank that had lately withdrawn meal tickets from workers, other banks had equally done so as a way of cutting cost and bring down over-head commitment. Some banks have equally slashed workers' salaries by as much as 50 per cent, while others, especially in the marketing department, have been on their wits end trying to meet seemingly unassailable targets. In a telephone chat with The Guardian, Igwe was non-commital on if the management used collective agreement, which spelt out redundancy benefit in working out the affected workers' final entitlements. He said the rationalisation was borne out of the restructuring and repository strategies of the management of the bank. Igwe said, "as part of the efforts to restructure and reposition Spring Bank Plc, the management of the bank has commenced a restructuring exercise that is aimed at putting the bank on the path of recovery and optimisation of its workforce. He added that, "the development, which will engender a re-focused and result oriented workforce, is mainly targeted at non-performing staff, who over the years have contributed below value expectations to both shareholders and customers". According to him, "poor performance is the main criteria used in this exercise, which will be an on-going process that will enable the bank achieve a quick turn around for stability and growth". But in a swift reaction to the statement, Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), said it would resist any bank's move to sacrifice workers for a sin they did not commit. General Secretary, ASSBIFI, Mr Jarvis Eromosele, told The Guardian that although the union was not totally in support of retrenchment, but if it must be done at all, it must follow due process using the collective bargain agreement and other extant laws, which spelt out conditions precedent to declaring redundancy. Eromosele, who declared that workers of Spring Bank were not unionised, however, noted that it was yet to get any official report of such sack from any worker of the bank. He said notwithstanding the non-membership of such workers, whenever such a case comes up, the union would be willing to take it up with the appropriate authority with the aim of redressing the situation. Eromosele therefore urged any worker who has been sacked recently by Spring Bank to come to the union secretariat and lodge a formal complaint. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/business/article03//indexn2_html?pdate=201109&ptitle=Spring%20Bank%20restructures,%20lays-off%20workers |
MTN Sacks 65 Workers, Re-organises Operations By Emma Okonji , Senior Correspondent, Lagos MTN Nigeria has laid off 65 staff workers from its customer service operations in a bid to embark on an aggressive plan to refocus the customer service operations towards the next generation customer care. Dropping the hint in Lagos on Thursday, Human Resources Executive, MTN, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola, confirmed that management had approved an exit package for all concerned to cushion the effect. According to her, the action was in line with the company’s internal reviews to better position the organisation to serve its customers for the future. MTN, she said, sincerely thanked all the affected staff members for their contributions to MTN while in the employment of the company and wished them the very best in all their future endeavours. Customer Relations Executive, MTN Nigeria, Akin Braithwaite, said the company had invested over N4.5 billion in state-of-the-art technology that supports a world-class customer service, and would want to maintain the standard. He revealed that the planned additional expenditure on customer care in 2010 is about N25 billion, which includes the cost of new call centres pan Nigeria. These will create about 1,500 new jobs, he said. Meanwhile, as part of efforts to urgently arrest the depletion of the natural resources of the Lake Chad region, MTN Nigeria is throwing its weight behind the successful hosting of the World Conference being organised to save the Lake. The two-day conference, which holds in Abuja from November 23, 2009, will not only sensitise the world to the deplorable state of infrastructure, lack of basic amenities and the untold hardship being faced by the inhabitants of the Lake Chad region, but also proffer solutions. Speaking on the sponsorship of the conference, which has the theme: ‘Saving Lake Chad’, Bola Akingbade, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, MTN, said that MTN is passionate about making the difference wherever it matters. According to Akingbade, “the depletion of the water resources of the Lake Chad basin has long reached the limits for sustainable development. The problem of water shortages within the region is begging for urgent attention and MTN, as a humane organisation, cannot afford to shy away from the imminent danger looming around the North-Eastern region of Nigeria as a result of the climate change there,” he said. Lake Chad is an inland body of freshwater situated in the Sahelian zone of the West Central Africa, surrounded by Cameroon, Chad Republic, Niger Republic and Nigeria. It has supported over 20 million people in communities within these countries. http://independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=3667 |

Shareholders of five banks lose N180bn in two weeks Stock price could collapse to 50 kobo by November Shareholders of the embattled five banks have lost about N180 billion in two weeks, an indication that they are in for hard times, according to Renaissance Capital. The analysts declared yesterday that going by the continued fall in the share prices of the banks since the lifting of the suspension, their shareholders may be in for more troubles. Renaissance Capital observed that in the last two weeks, the shares of Afribank, Finbank, Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank and Union Bank [Sanusi Lamido, governor, CBN] Sanusi Lamido, governor, CBN slumped by 26 percent, 32 percent, 36 percent, 36 percent and 40 percent respectively, being the equivalent of 61 percent of the total market lost by the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) within the same period. This, meanwhile, is against a market growth of over 6 percent attained by the NSE within the same period. Consequently, the analysts predicted that there is even every possibility that their share prices would further fall to 50 kobo, a situation that may further erode their fortunes. For instance, as of Tuesday, the shares prices of the banks stood at, Afribank, N3.86k; Finbank N1.06k; Intercontinental N4.64k; Oceanic N3.14k and Union bank N7.59k. “The road to 50 kobo could be shorter than we think, their 15th September closing prices… we estimate that Finbank, Oceanic, Afribank Intercontinental and Union would get to 50 kobo by October 5, November 3, November 9 and 26 respectively, if they continue to go limit down on this basis. Notably, if the share prices of the fallen banks fall to N50 kobo, their collective market values would fall at N277 billion,” the report stated. The report further bemoaned the lack of full disclosures on the financial position of the banks before the lifting of suspension on their shares, arguing that the development has denied analysts of informed decision on them. Besides, it suggested it is instrumental to the waning confidence on the banks by investors. “On August 17, we suspended comment on Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank and Union Bank on the basis that we did not have the necessary fundamental data on the current financial position of these banks and therefore could not make an informed decision on their fair value month on. “In our opinion, full transparency on the financial position of these banks should be published before they are allowed to trade. We believe therefore, that there is a real risk that their shares will fall to their nominal value (50 kobo),’’ the Renaissance Capital report stressed. The analysts nonetheless commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the capital injection of the N420 billion and the initial suspension on their shares but frowned at the subsequent lifting, adding “while we understand the reason for CBN’s decision to inject capital to support the fallen five and NSE had to suspend the shares on the announcement, we do not know why the NSE has decided to subsequently lift the suspension.’’ With the foregoing, other analysts contend yesterday that the stage may have been set for the chief executives of the embattled banks for the struggle for the soul of the banks. This is against the backdrop of revelations of deep infractions on the accounts of the banks. But, even at that, the chief executives are thinking of introducing austerity measures to curtail expenses if only they are to maintain the current workforce in their various organisations. For instance, one of the chief executives was said to be surprised over the over head cost running to billions monthly. As a way of curtailing it, the chief executive was said to have told the management of the subsidiaries, whose expenses were usually incorporated into the bank’s own to commence merging of some departments while he will be working on the possibility of merging the subsidiaries soonest. http://www.businessdayonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5137:shareholders-of-five-banks-lose-n180bn-in-two-weeks&catid=1:latest-news&Itemid=18 |
