I don't even know the man, I was just working at his site and then I heard he's a big man at his place of work, then the next day I summoned courage to approach him that I needed a job and told him my plight, then he said he will get back to me if there's vacancy, in 2 days time someone was sacked for stealing, Omo na so oh, he called my boss then and asked him if I was a good boy, then my boss gave him the go ahead and he called to his place, I am still grateful to that my former boss.

Na so I take get job, though the salary was small but I was so happy because it was far better than working concrete jobs as a bricklayer service at that time.

It's not large farming at all, it's just a 100ft x 50ft plot of land, I intend starting small then if it's favourable to me then I will hire acres of land and farm with it.

Sir, I have watched some videos on youtube on bee keeping and they advised not to do bee keeping in a place with Ant hills and termites around as they are natural enemies of bees and the land has so many anthills around even massive ones at that.

That word melts my heart when I hear it from youths with no background in Agriculture. That's the word that keeps me going in my field. You see, passion gets killed by frustration arising from continuous failure in a particular area of endeavour, most especially when you've committed a large chunk of your life savings into it.

This is my candid advice, You can go for crop farming for now, such as cassava farming, it requires less attention from the farmer. You can try out other crops like maize, groundnut, yam.

For animals, your attention is always needed, no matter what. But if you have a small piece of land that you have control over, close to natural vegetation, you can start bee keeping, it requires less attention, highly profitable and very interesting.

I have a personal plot of land I bought in the bush.

I will research about the bee keeping and ask you what I don't seem to understand.

Another good reason why a room and parlour won't be a good idea is that it won't be easy to manage the litter. When cages are used, there must be a good drainage underneath the cages that will allow easy packing of the litter (fowl dung), or flushing of the litter frequently.

Your best bet is to rent an unused poultry pen, there may be some little capacity pens around you if you can make some findings, that will be better.

There are two major types of housing system in poultry. We have :

Closed house system - Where all the sides of the poultry building are fully blocked or closed, while the enclosed building is fully climate-controlled and automated. it is used by all these big poultry farms such as Zartech, Agrited, Olam, Globus and so on.

Open house system - Here, the four sides of the building is open, no walls.The sides are only covered with chicken nets to confine the birds and allow free flow of air (ventilation).

Laying birds can generate lots of heat, coupled with ammonia gas from their litter and the environmental heat, birds need plenty of ventilation in their confinement to get rid of excess heat. A parlour and room won't help that, because they are semi-closed area. I think you get the point now.

If you won't be there to monitor the birds yourself or give them the needed attention, please forget about the idea of starting a poultry, don't waste your money.

There are lots of intriguing facts I'll like many people to know about poultry farming, these facts are based on many years of getting my hands dirty in the field, there are ups and downs, profits and losses, happy days and sad days, but above all, I can say farming is the way, and remains a goldmine if you go by the rules. Keep asking your questions here, and I'll do my best to answer based on first hand experience.

Most poultry pens for layers have enough ventilations like the open house system and the room and parlour don't have that luxury.

I won't be very much available for it too because I am a student and once the assu strike is called off I won't be available everytime and like you said I am wary of wasting my money and time.

Please can you advise any agricultural farming I could venture in with my situation, I have passion for agricultural and I want to start small now.
