BusinessRe: Woolworths Lagos Closed Down: Any Idea Why? by Constantin: 7:44pm On Sep 14, 2006
Why are all big brands expanding in other parts of the world like mad and in Nigeria they are closing down again. Oh my God! This really frustrates to hear, now I wouldn´t be surprised to hear if The Palms Shopping Mall closed down tomorrow and Tinapa Project is called off or burned down. This is simply Nigeria, oooo!!!!
The world is advancing but Naija is regressing. The constant factor that will stay will be our awfully dirty, painfully over-crowded and horribly noisy open-markets with stinky gutters that will keep on mushrooming just like glitzy and modern malls and other leisure things in other parts of the world! cry cry

No, this is business! China offers a large market for Africa, too. It is up to us to grab hold of this opportnity instead of lamenting endlessly as ever!
TravelRe: West African Countries Hate Nigerians? by Constantin: 6:04pm On Sep 06, 2006
Without sounding arrogant, our country - despite its massive problems - is a "mega-superpower" in the eyes of those economic "minnows" surrounding Naija. grin grin grin

If a wealthy Nigerian billionaire went out in order to buy entire Ghana and Togo as a dessert, it would not scratch a Nigerian fly but it would make entire nations - surrounding Nigeria - revolt in despair and anger. wink

Any more information or is it just one more typical Nigerian pipedream?
TravelRe: Pictures of Lagos Skyline (City-Scape) by Constantin: 10:05am On Aug 25, 2006
Thanks to all for showing FINALLY pictures. We need to show to the outside world that Naija is also beautiful, that we are hard-working and clever people and not 2something stupid2 the western media portrayS. If we africans don´t BEGIN TO invest in marketing (what Asia is currently doing) NOBODY will do it for us!

Why are there so few pictures on Lagos skyline to be found on the internet, on its projects, also about Abuja. Go and visit skyscrapercity.com (the world´s largett page for construction and news, for presentation of countries), it is visited by thousands of people daily, people from allover discuss and show their cities THEY DO BRANDING!!!, THE SHOW THEIR PROJECTS (I WAS REALLY AMAZED). There is also a small African section but virtually no Nigerians are there to portray our country and cities cry whereas the South African section is big and people discuss about it a lot. Same for Asia or South America but our continent as a whole is absent again. cryplease go and visit that site. It is fabulous!

TravelRe: A True Tropical Paradise: French Polynesia In The Pacific by Constantin(op): 9:46am On Aug 25, 2006
Alarinjo, Thank for your kind words. I do hope that Lagos renewal projects don´t turn out to be pipedreams and things really get built. I AM YEARNING FOR IT! Lagos in order to compete with cities in Asia or South America (I am not talking about Europe or US) must brush aside its "dirty image". Reference cities for us should be the new emerging economies (where I want our country to be among them, too). Lagos needs new flyovers, more hostels (has federal Palace not changed or ikoyi hotel?), more malls (take a look at Indian cities!), more amsuement cente (bowiling alley, ice-skating, an ice-rink has recently opened in Nairobi Kenya, by the way, more nice cafés etc.) more decent open air markets, more good hospitals and schools and a good public transport system (or at least more multi-lane highways that criss-croos the city such as in Asia or South Africa).
Alarinjo, please TAKE MORE PHOTOS AND POST THEM OR WHEN YOU FIND SOME MORE LINKS TO PROJECTS JUST POST THEM. Nigeria needs positive marketing, desperately. You have my full support!!! cheesy cheesy kiss kiss

Iice, no I have never been to French polynesia. Only oversea French department I have been to is Martinique (Antilles) (in connection with a trip to Barbados) in the Caribbean. it was really very nice, maybe I will create a thread some time here to show it.
TravelRe: A True Tropical Paradise: French Polynesia In The Pacific by Constantin(op): 10:04am On Aug 23, 2006
Brother, I am impressed. Have you got more pics to post on the net? I am dying to see them, You should create a website where you post some of the pics to show to the outside world that Lagos (at least in parts) has improved.
When I wrote about Lagos, it was just out of desperation and a certain degree of helplessness and it was not a personal attack against you. I DO HOPE THAT THINGS KEEP IMPROVING,OOOO!!!!
I want Nigeria to improve and to shrug off its old and ghastly image of a dirty tropical backwater cry. We Nigerians are also clever and good people to compete with other places in the world. cheesy smiley
TravelRe: A True Tropical Paradise: French Polynesia In The Pacific by Constantin(op): 11:30pm On Aug 22, 2006
I am a Nigerian, so I know Nigeria very well. I am currently in the UK, but I doubt that Nigeria has changed so much for the better in terms of cleanliness and structuredness from the last time I was in the country (april 2004).

Sorry, but no part of VI looks like that! It starts already with the open sewers that still dot to many parts of Ikoyi and some of VI. Security on the streets, open markets (Bar beach market etc.), too many run down hotels (like Ikoyi or Federal Palace etc.), where is a marina in VI? Tranquil and well run and tidy restaurants ar cafés to have lunch or sip your cappuchino?

I want to see photos to convince me, my brothers.

VI is no French Polynesian Island in the Pacific. Sorry, oooo

my brother Todd Terry, looks like Victoria Island shocked shocked shockedhuh
I do not know any area of VI that has streets and areas that are as well-developed, neat and ordered like this place in French Polynesia.
Moreover, who says that people lean back and do nothing over there? Social benefits means security: good STATE-RUN AND FREE schools and university , good FREEE AND STATE-RUN hospitals where you do not have to bribe in order to get an injection, a pension sytem that doesn´t send you to the streets for begging for money, FREE social housing; job security, is that something we all should aspire for and a country such rich like Naija ought to provide for all its citizenshuhhuh huh huh tongue cry

Brazil is a tropical country just like Naija but why can´t our country be as nice and neat as Brazil? If I invested my money, I would put it into this city! Lagos Bar beach also is a nice beach why can´t it look like that? TravelRe: Has Anyone Been To Gabon? by Constantin: 7:56pm On Aug 04, 2006
HI NAIJA DIVA,

The reason is that it has been one of the few African countries that have always remained tranquil and realtively economically thriving from its days of independance. the press never like to show the better side of our continent when there are still some “Liberias” raging on. cry

Gabon is really nice, been there myself. Although Gabonese society is also traditional the country has culturally been heavily influenced by France. (very visible in the urban centres: many shopping facilities same as in France, cultural activities, fashion labels and shows, restaurants, cafés, patisseries, swanky nightclubs, all Gabonese speak a very good French on the streets and even to each other, you have tons of French experts in governement , in schools and universities, managers in business , French lawyers, doctors, IT-consultants, architects, and even pilots, France has three military permanent bases in Gabon in order to defend the country from outside attacks, their currency used to be tied to the French Franc and is now to the euro--> gives a lot of monetary stability to Gabon etc, ). Gabonese people love to go to France for holidays or to further their studies there. France always had a sort of special relationship to that country, even during colonialism which has been very soft and "easy-going" in Gabon as opposed to other colonial powers in Africa. Libreville´s waterfront is even modelled after Nice in France (of course much smaller). When you take out the immigrants, Gabon has just got 700 000 native Gabonese but a relatively large permanent French community (20 000 to 30 000 people, largest French community in Sub-saharan Africa apart from Senegal, I have been told). Many have children who are already born in Gabon and have dual citizenship, and you see maaannnyy mixed couples and mulattos and mulattas there. Some say that Gabonese are due to their wealth pretty arrogant and they consider themselves "a class of its own in Africa", to my mind, there are snobs there, too, as everywhere in the world but also very nice and calm people. Very relaxed lifestyle.

This is one massive waterfront project that will soon be built in Libreville at a staggering cost of 500 Million Dollars. Replete with a megamall, a marina, office facilities, an exhibition centre and an amusement area (bowling, ice-skating, cineplex etc.) and two designer luxury hotels, too.

Todd Terry,

yes, presently that is the case, as I said above Air Gabon is currently restructuring and the only international flight left in their network is Paris now. Air Gabon no longer serves any African routes. It only flies to Paris and the domestic routes. This is really weird. huhbut one can go from Cameroon on cameroon airlines or via Abidjan with Air Ivoire in côte d´ivoire to Gabon. This is all I know. Why Are you interested in Gabon, Todd?
TravelRe: Has Anyone Been To Gabon? by Constantin: 9:01pm On Aug 02, 2006
Hi Todd Terry

Here are a couple of photos on Gabon´s second largest city named "Port Gentil" which means "Friendly Port" translated from French. It is located south of Libreville the country´s capital and it is bigger than "Franceville" (the country´s third largest city which is the interior of the country). I found the photos on the net. Port Gentil has just got around 100 000 inhabitants and looks tranquil and really nice. Been there myself once.

Hi Todd Terry

why Gabon? what do you want to do there? They all speak French, it is a nice and rich country but also (partly excessively) expensive, Gabon has just got slightly more than 1 million inhabitants (300 000-400 000 immigrants are already included in that figure). The country is half the size of France.

Do you want to visit Libreville, Port Gentil or Franceville (three "major" cities) in Gabon? Their capital has just got less than 500 000 people. There used to be an Air Gabon service between Lagos and Libreville but as the airline in a phase of complete restructuring presently, it stopped all their African routes. They only fly now to Paris (oly international route) and the two other main cities in Gabon (Port Gentil and Franceville).

TravelRe: Are International Airports In Nigeria Too Small? by Constantin(op): 3:24pm On Jul 23, 2006
MMIA certainly needs a major expansion. I also feel ashamed when I arrive in Lagos due to the small airport CONSIDERING OUR COUNTRY´S POTENTIAL ECONOMIC STATUS. Here is Jo burg´s airport. It is state of the art and 21 world. MMIA was ice in the 70´s when it was built but we are in 2006. The airport needs an expansion.
