Controversy: There have been reports that a fat sum of money, which was meant to be disbursed to sympathetic lawmakers was not properly distributed thereby infuriating those who made the money available.Has there ever been any serious debate in the floors of the two chambers bothering on national issues that directly affect the masses? Have they ever fought like the animals they always show us they are, if not when there are some political or financial benefits. I believed in GEJ and voted for his perceived innocence, but it seems that he now wears bigger political "shoes" in the style characterstic of Nigerian democracy. Our youths are at home, wasting away their young and youthful life, and our leders are doing nothing but fight for thier pockets, inclding our president. Why has no law maker raised the ASUU-FG stalemate as an urgent matter of national interest? If the story is true - and i dont see why it cant be - we are talking of NGN 162 million naira to each of the receipients. And how many of them are in the list? To what cause is this money going? That is about the average salary of a university professor, for about 22 years. Or the monthly salary of 270 professors!!! Yet the presidency through the Finance Minister, had the impetus to tell NIgrians that Nigeria would crumble should the FG honour itself and meet ASUU's demands. In my opinion GEJ shoud vacate the state house in 2015, and stop trying to justify further the dose of mediocrity that his administration has already served NIgeria and Nigerians. He has shown that he was not prepared for what came to him. Mind you I'm Igbo, but can't support evil |
This is the type of politics we do in Nigeria where all these rogues and animals in human skin control our money as if is their father's property mainly for their self perpetuation in office and political interest. The wrath of God will continue to visit all of those who continue to make Nigerians suffer in the mist of plenty just because they rigged themselves into office and also all those who support them and sympathized with them. May they know no peace in their lives. Nigerian are dying daily from preventable causes and these useless idiots in Abuja are doing nothing but sharing money that is supposed to be used for our collective welfare? Death, destruction and confusion shall continue to be their portion.... |

By Soni Daniel, Regional Editor, North Indications emerged last night President Goodluck Jonathan was uncomfortable with his dwindling political fortunes in the National Assembly despite the control of the two chambers of the national legislature by his party. Presidential sources hinted Saturday Vanguard that Jonathan was particularly irked by the show of shame that erupted on the floor of the House of Representatives earlier in the week as a result of the face off between his supporters and opponents in the PDP, which broke into two last month. Senator Joy Emodi There have been reports that a fat sum of money, which was meant to be disbursed to sympathetic lawmakers was not properly distributed thereby infuriating those who made the money available. Some lawmakers were said to have receive a paltry $25,000 instead of $100,000 said to have been earmarked for them. The wrong application of the money is said to have been partly responsible for the free-for-all on the floor of the House of Representatives during the week. The source said that Jonathan was compelled to fire his Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters, Sen. Joy Emordi, because of her perceived weakness and inability to influence the lawmakers in his favour. The Presidency is said to have complained that Emordi had not been able to exert her position on the legislature and attract the requisite respect and support from majority of the members for Jonathan since her engagement about two years ago. Presidential strategists pondered why the ‘opponents’ of the President appeared to be gaining more attention in the NASS in spite of the position of Emordi and hordes of other officials working for the President. A source said, “It is clear to Mr. President that Emordi’s presence has not earned him the needed leverage in the legislature as many members continue to work against his interest despite the fact that they are from the dame party. “She (Emordi) has clearly demonstrated through a lack-lustre perforce that she cannot build the required bridge between the President and the lawmakers and she had to go,” the source said. It was learnt last night that the Presidency was already shopping for a more fiery northern politician, who would not only be able to attract the necessary political clout but also be able to mobilise support for the President. Olagunju on the other hand is said to have failed to move NEPAD from its precarious state since his appointment and had to be booted out by the Presidency. “NEPAD under Olagunju was dead and was only waiting for its final burial,” a source in the agency lamented, saying that the man had even outlived his usefulness. Reacting to the development yesterday, Senator Joy Emodi in between receiving calls from serving legislators and well wishers expressed thanks to the president and the legislators for the support given her in the course of her assignment. “I thank the president and all the legislators for the opportunity given to me to work with them.” Senator Emodi was appointed to the position in 2011 and walked the difficult path of forging cordiality between the administration and the often skeptical National Assembly. She was able to win the confidence of the legislators despite the hard feelings felt towards some elements in the administration. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/why-jonathan-fired-emordi-olagunju/ |
By Olasunkanmi Akoni and Monsur Olowoopejo Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State and his Ekiti State counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi have expressed support for the planned removal of minimum wage from the Exclusive list to the Concurrent list, by the Federal Government, saying “it was long overdue.” The governors, however, urged the Nigerian Union of Labour, NLC and Trade Union Congress TUC, to sheath their sword and support the removal, maintaining that it would decentralized the fixing of minimum wage in the country. The duo spoke yesterday, at the commissioning of the South West Zonal office of the National Pensionsn Commission NPC, in Ikeja, which also had in attendance Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Chairman Senate Committee on Establishment, Senator Alloysius Etok and Senator Gbenga Ashafa and Babafemi Ojudu, respectively, as well as the Vice Chairman of the House Committee on Establishment, Mr. Samson Okwu among other dignitaries. “If we are truly a federal entity, there isn’t any reason why we shouldn’t have minimum wage at the state level rather than an imposed minimum wage from the national. Having a national minimum wage doesn’t stop us from having the state minimum wage.” They maintained. According to Fashola:“If we are decentralising the management of pension and it is making sense, why can’t we decentralise payment of wages in the country. This is a federation and there is need for us to have an open and robust debate about it.” “And the demand for wages does not mean that we should shutdown the economy. This is where we must show maturity in our democracy that we will have protest and disagreement but we will find the right answer, so that government and private sector will continue to work”. Fashola, urged labour to dialogue with the appropriate government authorities on reaching an agreement on the issue, saying incessant protests were inimical to development of the nation. Fayemi said: “The time has come for us to speak openly for what we believe in. We may disagree. I have never claim the monopoly of any idea and no one can. The labour has a position but perhaps there is need for them to listen to another opinion on the issue of minimum wage. For us it is not the person who makes the law that matters it is whether or not Nigerian workers gets a fare pay for a hard job. Who make the law and other issues only distract us from the real issue.” “I remember that at the early stage of our independence, the Western region workers were leaving the federal public service to work in the state public service because the salary offered by the government of the West was much better than the minimum wage offered by the central government. It is time for us to return to that period for us to strengthen our federalism.” In his remarks, Governor Amosun, urged the National Assembly to expedite action on the amendment of the Pension Act to address some of its challenges. He attributed the N13 billion pensions arrears his administration had inherited to the imperfection of the old scheme, expressing the optimism that transition to the new scheme would ensure pensioners were paid as at when due. Earlier, Acting Director- General, NPC, Ms Chinelo Anohu-Amazu said the new South-West Zonal office would facilitate the efficient management of workers’ pensions by the commission. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/fashola-fayemi-back-planned-decentralisation-of-minimum-wage/ |

The Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, Ikoyi, Lagos State, has declared the Anambra State Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Vincent Ezenwajiaku, wanted. The SFU said the commissioner allegedly obtained N10.5m under false pretence about 10 years ago. His surety, one Mr. Obi Okwudili, had also been arrested by the unit for his inability to produce the suspect. A statement by the SFU Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Isintume-Agu said, “A petition to the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, alleged that sometime between 1996 and 2002, Ezenwajiaku, being the Managing Director of BIO Plastic Ltd, had invited the complainant to invest in his company as a co-Director. “This was to enable the complainant acquire 34 per cent equity at the end of the investment.” The complainant was said to have subsequently paid N10,582,540.00 in installments after receiving reports from Ezenwajiaku, which indicated the huge potential of the company, the expected turnover and the profit. However, a belated check with the Corporate Affairs Commission by the complainant later revealed that he had invested in a non- existent company as it was not registered with the commission. The statement read in part, “In the course of investigation, detectives from the unit, travelled to Anambra State with an invitation letter which was duly served on the suspect. “Ezenwajiaku was expected to report to SFU on April 16, 2013, but he did not honour the invitation. “On August 4, 2013, detectives went to Awka with a warrant of arrest which Ezenwajiaku resisted. “Instead, he maintained that he must see the governor of the state or the commissioner of police in the state. “Ezenwajiaku was later taken to State Criminal Investigation Department at Anambra, where he made cautionary statement.” He was said to have been subsequently released on bail to Okwudili who promised in writing to produce Ezenwajiaku on August 15 2013. On the said date, Okwudili was said to have failed to produce Ezenwajiaku. As a result, Okwudili was later arrested and would soon be charged to court for offence of “surety to show cause.” The statement added, “The Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit has declared Vincent Ezenwajiaku wanted. “Anybody with useful information on how to arrest him or his whereabouts, should contact the Commissioner of Police, Special Fraud Unit, 13, Milverton Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.” http://247nigerianewsupdate.com/police-declare-anambra-commissioner-wanted-for-alleged-fraud/ |

By Bartholomew Madukwe A housewife, Mrs Iyabo Odewunmi, has told an Osogbo Customary Court in Osun State to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage to her husband, Ojo, over his habit of using her menstrual pads for ritual purposes. Iyabo, while complaining that her husband was a threat to her life and that of her children, said “I noticed that my menstrual pads had been missing as well as my bras and pants. When I complained to my husband, he said nothing. He later promised to buy me new pants and bras.” She accused her husband of being diabolical, adding, “my husband has been behaving in a mysterious way in the last few months and I see this as a threat to my life and that of my children.” In his response, Ojo informed the court that his wife lied against him because she was looking for flimsy excuses to abandon the marriage. However, President of the court, Mrs Temilade Agboola, advised the couple to find means of resolving their dispute rather than dissolve the marriage and adjourned the case to November 5, 2013 for judgment. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/my-husband-uses-my-menstrual-pads-for-ritual-wife-alleges/ |

Bad things plenty for this country Yet in another news: I ‘graduated’ from kid robber to notorious car snatcher Man, 29 on september 15, 2013 at 8:10 am in crime guard By Ifeanyi Okolie Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in Lagos State, have arrested a gang of car snatchers suspected of terrorizing Ikeja and other parts of the state for a long time. The suspects, Sadiq Olayibi, Tolani Adeyinka, Adeleke Teslim and Olayemi Akiloye, met their waterloo when SARS operatives swooped on them at various parts of the state. Olabiyi described himself as a kid robber who graduated to a full blown car snatcher. Also arrested was a 50-year-old woman, Lawal Ireti, who was described as the gang’s informant. Police sources said Ireti provided other jobs for the gang when they were not snatching cars. According to the sources, the woman suspect provided information to the gang that led to the robbery of the N8 million from a micro finance bank in Ogba area of Ikeja. *Suspects…’We stole N8m from Micro-Finance Bank’ “The gang specialized in car snatching and they terrorized Ikeja and environs for a lng time. They operated during the weekends and their targets were exotic cars. Their activities gave the police, residents and night crawlers in Ikeja sleepless nights and the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, in his bid to stem the gang’s operation, ordered the officer in charge of SARS, SP, Abba Kyari, to trail and apprehend the bandits. Kyari, who swiftly swung into action, sent undercover operatives into streets to shop for stolen vehicles. Their efforts paid off when they stumbled on oen of the gang members who attempted to sell a stolen Toyota Camry to the undercover operatives. He was arrested and his arrest pave the way for the arrest of other members of the gang including Ireti the 50-year-old woman”, one of the sources told Sunday Vanguard. The source added that members of the gang got wind of the arrest of their member and they made effort to flee the country. “We arrested Tolani Adeyinka, at the South Africa Embassy, after he had secured a visa to flee the country. Sadiq Olabiyi was picked up at Ajah area of the state, he has also applied for a visa to tavel to Egypt. Adeleke Teslim and Olayemi Akiloye were picked separately at Ojo and Okokomaiko areas of the state,” the source narrated. Meanwhile, when Sunday Vanguard interviewed the suspects at Lagos State Command Headquarters, Ikeja, they confessed to the crime, but Olabiyi blamed his involvement in crime to lack of prper training. The 27 year-old man said, “I am the first child of my parents. My father did not have a good job, which made us very poor. I was born in Ketu. As a young boy, I used to go to the market at Mile 12 to assist some people selling stolen goats. I usually helped them to offload the goats from their vehicles and, from there, I learnt how to drive. When I graduated from secondary school, I joined the business full time. I stole several goats, I would travel to some south western states to steal goats. While I was doing that, I met Tolani Adeyinka. He and Adeleke Teslim and one other had started snatching cars then. They knew I was a good driver; so they asked me to join them. We stole a lot of cars together and we operated mostly in Ikeja, Ogba and Agege areas. We usually struck weekends when fun seekers were on the streets grooving and our targets were mostly Toyota, Honda and Mercedes Benz cars. We had ready buyers all over the state and we would deliver a stolen car to any of the buyers who make the highest bid. We sold Toyota cars for N250,000 and Honda Accord from N300,000. I got between N100,000 and N150,000 after each operation, I spent my money on myself, I bought good clothes, rented an apartment at Ajah and bought a land at Ikorodu, where I am building a three-bedroom flat apartment. But sometime in July, Ireti brought us a job where we stolen the sum of N8 million from a micro fiance bank. I don’t know the name of the bank but she and a male partner brought the job to us. I thought they were police informants trying to set me up and I ignored their calls from close to two weeks. When I finally met them at a bar in Ikotun they told me that they got my phone number from one of my friends who told them I could do the job. The job was at Ikeja and they asked us to wait soemwhere for the car conveying the money to pass. Ireti was there to point the car for us. After she did, we followed the car alongn Ogba and double crossed it. I was the one driving. Tolani Adeyinka and Adeleke Teslim bolted out with their guns and they snatched the bag containing the money and all the occupants’ mobile phones before we zoomed off. We shared the money equally, four million naira went to Ireti and her partner and my gang shared the rest. I got one million naira as my own share.” |
