___CHAPTER 1___

1160AD
It was a cold windy harmattan morning, somewhere at the belt of the Niger in the great Oyo empire, a loud breaking sound was heard, it pierced through the cold harmattan wind, a young man was breaking pieces of firewood in the woods, it was his only source of income, he got up as early as 5am to start his daily ritual of work,work and work! all day, even with that he realised little or nothing to get him enough food.

His name was Alen, his ritual of working all day had given him pretty good biceps, he had developed a pretty muscular frame and towered just 6feet.
He was 19 years of age, but could be mistaken for a boy of 16 due to his boyish looks. His face had become aged looking due to work,stress and sweat, but at his 'end of the day' shower,one could see he was an handsome man.

"please mama, 30 cowries is too small, this is good wood, I got it while the sun was not yet high and the dew was one with nature",
Alen pleaded, he had been trying to sell his wood all morning,and had only realised 25cowries, that wasn't going to get him enough ekó and garri to hold his stomach till evening time, he was determined to reach the 100cowries bar set by Alaga , Alaga was the ruthless market chief, he went around collecting daily taxes from people and was feared amongst all, he had made a fortune by diverting taxes, but Allen's case was different, his father had owed 50 bags of cowries to Alaga before he died( a whooping 5000 cowries).
He had borrowed the money to pay for his wife's maternity. But was robbed and killed on the way to the local midwife's house, his wife also died of labour pains and Alen was left to face the world alone.…….

"I'm buying it for only 30 cowries, how can I give you 50ciwries for this dry piece of wood, are you selling or not" the old woman asked feigning anger

"Okay ma, I'll sell it,just bring the money"

She counted 30cowries and threw it at his face, he gave her a fresh big bunch of firewood and thanked her, if he was to meet Alaga's deadline, he needed to make at least 200cowries a day yo pay Alaga, fill his stomach and save a little for his future.
'Vrooom!' Just then a big silver neck Pterosaur flew overhead ,it was clear that its rider was a silver ranked Eleye, 2nd in the rank of the Oyo Air force, Alen smiled ,he had one day dreamt of joining the Eleye, even if he was just ranked in the 'Soil' category.
'Gbam!' A fireball just hit the silver Eleye, his dragon(Éyé ) tried to regain control but it was too late, the man had turned to ashes and his Dragon was crashing down faster than a turpedo.
His dragon crashed and a Gold Eleye raced through the sky ,it was clear what had happened, the Gold Eleye had shot the silver rider. All the villagers scampered for safety, they had never seen such, shouts of 'Ewoo!' (Abomination) rendered through the air.
Alen swallowed hard and summoned courage, he walked towards the silver ptesaurus and knelt before it, petting it he whispered "it will be alright" ,the Dragon whined in pain and breathe it last, suddenly it turned to dust and evaporated into the air (what happens when an Éyé dies) ,"the pain was too much,I understand' Alen said barely above a whisper and burst into tears. He had felt a kind of chemistry with the animal, he didn't understand, but it touched him, he put himself together and was able to make 135cowries at the end of the day.

"Better to pay Alaga now than wait for later" he thought.

He walked down to Alaga's house and heard laughter right from the gate, Alaga must be merry making again with his friend, Oniro he thought, he decided to listen to what they were talking about, it was his only way of hearing news of what happened at the Baale's palace;

"Hahahaha! Yes! I know your son will make it, the one and only Alaga himself!" Oniro said

"Yes! When he joins the Academy ,he would be promoted to the rank of a Gold Lieutenant without any protocol! I will make sure I make sure Baale tells the kabiyesi that!" Alaga boasted

"I know you can do it! He who holds the key to the Baale's heart" Oniro flattered and drank palmwine directly from the gourd

Alen stepped in to interrupt them,
"Here comes the Alangba(lizard) who refuses to bring back teeth for the king of reptiles" Alaga joked and he and Oniro burst into a fit of laughter.

"Goodday sirs" Alen greeted

"Do you have my money?!" Alaga asked without replying his greeting

"Yes sir"

"Alright then,let me have it"

Alaga checked the pouch that Alen had given him and smiled. If you keep up this way boy, you'd soon be free of your useless father's debt
Alen was angered at his words but just turned to leave, "I will be great someday!" He swore to himself.

Alen didn't understand what Alaga had been talking about with Oniro, not that Alaga's business concerned him, but it had something to do with the Eleye and it disturbed him, he decided to shut his eyes and force them to sleep when he heard the Town Crier……

"Gbom!Gbom!Gbom! Message from the Kabiyesi of the Great Oyo Empire has reached the Baale that the Eleye are recruiting, all interested candidates are to go to the Empire's capital for the recruitment exercise, 100cowries will be required to join the exercise!"

Alen's eyes widened on hearing the news, every form of sleep left his eyes, so this is what Alaga had been talking about with Oniro, he brought out his safe immediately and counted what he had, he had only 75cowries, that wasn't going to stop him though, he packed all his valuables into a satchel, he was going to Oyo...
