In many countries of the world, Nigerians are viewed as fraudulent people, and this is quite evident in the manner in which they are treated. It is, therefore, shocking when a Nigerian is defrauded by a white man. Dipo Fashina reports.

Long gone are the days when one could easily make a living in Nigeria by doing just about anything. That was a period when Nigeria was still young and corruption had not become a fad. As the years went by, things got tougher and tougher, so much that getting a degree from an institution of higher learning no longer guarantees a secured future. Even the educated one now opt for menial jobs to survive.


It is, therefore, disheartening when one sees a Nigerian who is trying to survive being forced to his knees by another, especially when the perpetrator is better placed in the society than the victim. This was the case with Mr. Richard Olalekan, a dealer in charcoal, who was allegedly swindled by his English customer.


According to Mr. Olalekan, he had been in the charcoal business for some time and things seemed to be moving on fine. A few years ago, 2006 to be precise, fortune seemed to smile on him when a company in the United Kingdom, Diamond Fuel Supplies Ltd; contacted him to supply some consignments of charcoal. The director of the company at that time was Mr. Bob Baghnall. The man was so pleased with the goods that he requested for a continuation of the transaction.


Everything was going on well until the sudden demise of Mr. Baghnall in August, 2006, and the story changed.


Initially, Mr Jonathan Baghnall, heir to the company, continued the transaction with Mr. Olalekan, even commending him for the high quality coal he was sending over, consequently making him to ask for another supply of 400 containers of coal to be supplied after the successful execution of the outstanding one. All this took place towards the end of 2006.


But, at a point, payment for received goods seized, and Mr Olalekan waited for a while to see if it was just a mix-up that was responsible for it. He soon realised that his money might not come if he didn't start asking questions.


So, he inquired from Jonathan what the matter was. He was told that the last set of consignments he sent was not satisfactory as it was found out that some of the coal was wet, and this was the reason his payment had been delayed. On hearing this, Mr. Richard said he told them that, even if that was the case, they should have informed him and he would have just made up for the difference in his next supply. So, not to cry over spilt milk, he asked for the quantity that was bad so that he could make up for it, and then, they started evading the issue all together. By then, Diamond Fuel Supplies had paid Richard 11,780.79 pounds out of the 37,145 pounds they owed him, leaving an outstanding balance of 25,364.2 pounds. This was in August, 2007.


This went on for a while until Richard was invited over to the UK by his customer, Baghnal, in September of the same year. This was probably done to have a sit-down with him so that they could sort out the problems they had, or so it seemed.


On September 22, 2007, Mr. Richard travelled to the U.K where he was received and accommodated by his host. During his stay, he met with Mr. Baghnal and other representatives of Diamond Fuel Supplies at the head office of the company located at Station Yard, Enslow-Bletchinton, Oxford, U.K. and, at this meeting, Mr. Jonathan not only reiterated his appreciation of the services rendered by Mr. Richard, he also informed him about the number of containers that had wet charcoal in them, and that they had used them for the production of charcoal briquette. He promised him that they would pay up their debt once they sorted themselves out as they were having financial problems with their bank.


Mr Richard produced two more bills of laden, valued at 19,669 pounds for additional containers that had been sent. This brought the outstanding payment to 45,033 pounds.


Mr. Richard finally had to leave the U.K when his visit was over, but on his last day there, he was given a money order by Mr. Baghnall for the amount of 30,000 pounds. He was made to believe that the money had been paid into his bank account in Nigeria. This made him happy. He was invited to have tea before the drive down to the airport, an invitation he accepted. No sooner had they started taking the tea when Mr. Baghnall started hurrying him up as he claimed to have a meeting.


He finished his tea and was to be taken to the airport by the company driver. He said he noticed that Mr. Jonathan called the driver away from the wheels and spoke to him in hushed tones. This didn't bother him too much as he assumed he must have been giving him some instructions.


But, they had hardly started on their journey before Mr. Richard started feeling some discomfort in his stomach. A little longer, the mild discomfort had turned into a full blown case of serious stomach pain. He was holding his stomach and rolling on the seat. He said that the driver didn't bother to inquire what was wrong with him, he just kept on glancing at him through the inner mirror as he drove on to the airport. No sooner had they arrived at the airport that the driver came over to his side of the vehicle, opened the door, and practically dragged him out of the car. He just left him on the curb and drove off.


It was some people at the airport that helped him into the airport building. He said that he was in the gents for a long time before he finally regained some composure. By the time he boarded the plane back to Nigeria, he was a little relieved, but the pain persisted.


When he got back to Nigeria, he was sick for several months before he finally got better. He later began to suspect that Mr. Baghnall might have attempted to poison him. But, this was just one of his problems. He also discovered that the 30,000 pounds payment was a dud; his bank in Nigeria said that they had not received any payment from the said organisation. When he called Mr. Baghnall to ask about the non-payment, he got a rude shock. When he identified himself as Richard Olalekan to Mr. Baghnal's inquiry of who was calling him, the Briton said that it was not possible. And after a few seconds, he terminated the telephone conversation. He tried his number again on several occasions, but the person on the other side of the line always cut the phone once he heard his voice.


All this was about two and a half years ago and all the money owed Mr. Richard is now 53,773 pounds. Since then, Mr. Richard has been forced to close down his warehouse and laid off all his workers since there was no money to run the place anymore.


All efforts made by the Nigerian Tribune to reach Mr. Jonathan Baghnall to get his own side of the story failed. Every time a call was made to his office, it was always the same message, he was not on seat at the moment. And his personal phone does not get answered when called.


This is certainly a very pathetic case as Mr. Richard no longer has a means of livelihood. He has made spirited efforts to get what is owed him by Diamond Fuels, but he seems not to be getting anywhere. We can only hope that justice will take its course and Mr. Richard will finally heave a sigh of relief.

NSC, NFF to renegotiate deal with Lagerback

The National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation have begun moves to extend the contract of Super Eagles coach, Lars Lagerback.

The NSC Director General Partick Ekeji told our correspondent on Saturday that the Swede had done so much for the Eagles within a short time, despite the team losing their two World Cup games in South Africa.

He said Nigeria’s defeat against Greece was largely due to the inability of the players to rise to the situation they found themselves.

Ekeji said, ”The coach has shown so much promise with this team. What we intend to do is to give him more time to raise a formidable team for the country.

”It is clear we need to develop our football and we want to retain this man and give him a chance to do that. The players are okay with him and we cannot be changing coaches every time in the national team.”

The Presidential Task Force is currently paying the salary of Lagerback for his initial five-month contract.

Ekeji stressed that the NSC and the NFF would meet with the Swede on his future with the national team.

He said, ”We want him to stay for the next four or five years with a proper plan for our national teams. In that case, we have to talk on his pay and other things.


“It is good to allow continuity in sports. We are going to give the coach the opportunity of continuing with the Eagles.”

ANPP Leaders Woo IBB
•Urge him to dump PDP

Some top members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), including senators and former governors, have urged the party to do all it can to lure former military President Ibrahim Babangida to its fold.

The move by the members is premised on the calculation that the former military leader may not secure the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to enable him contest in next year’s general election.

Among the arrowheads of the move to get Babangida into the ANPP are Senators Ahmed Sani Yarima (Zamfara West), Kabiru Gaya (Kano North), member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara State and the ANPP National Secretary, Alhaji Saidu Kumo, among others.

Available information indicate that even though Babangida is yet to be contacted, a high-powered delegation will likely be sent to the general in due course to make the offer of joining the ANPP.

Giving an insight into the plan, former Zamfara State governor, Ahmed Sani Yarima, told THISDAY that: "It is true such a proposal was discussed, and we are exploring avenue to make it a reality. As at the last time we held a meeting in that regard, IBB has not been consulted, but we feel it is not necessary now. We are waiting to see how the PDP primaries will go.

"We feel with his popularity, mass appeal and experience as a former Head of State, he will be the best person for this country at the moment.
"Don't forget the fact that Babangida had himself given the hint that he may seek his ambition under another platform if denied the PDP ticket. We are trying to explore that and also ensure that we field a candidate that will match PDP in all ramification," Yarima, one of the top financiers of the party, disclosed to THISDAY.

He said, if IBB accedes to their request, the party would mobilise its members and resources to ensure he gets the ticket.
"I have spoken to the national secretary and others who are all eager to take the idea to the next level," he added.

Efforts to speak to the ANPP national secretary was not successful yesteday. However, the party’s publicity secretary, Mr. Emma Eneukwu said the party as a body has not discussed the issue.

"It is not even an agenda for us at the moment because the person in question (IBB) is not a member of our party. Until he joins ANPP, I cannot comment on his ambition. As for our members you mentioned, they are free as individuals to express their opinions on issues, and to propagate such opinions," Eneukwu said.

Also, IBB's spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua said the former military president is a strong member of the PDP and will seek to be its presidential candidate next year.
"That is the end of the matter. Honestly, we are very confident of getting the party's (PDP’s) ticket. As such, all our energy is tailored towards that," he added.

The move to drag IBB into the ANPP will make a strong opponent of Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau who has already declared his intention to contest next year's presidential poll under the banner of the ANPP.

Forty- five- year old Philip Ben from Akwa Ibom State who impregnated his 12 –year- old daughter has alleged that the daughter tempted him severally by wearing skimpy dresses and lying naked on bed whenever he was around at home.

The unremorseful father who escaped being lynched by women at the Oduduwa police annex, Ikeja, during his parade before newsmen yesterday, said he had sex several times with the daughter.

But the daughter (names with held) told Daily Champion that her father drugged her and broke her virginity at a tender age

Speaking with our correspondent, the suspect said he did not want to abort the pregnancy since it has become a public knowledge. He said he was prepared to appease the gods of their land than to abort the pregnancy.

"I don’t mind the shame but I cannot abort the pregnancy. I am not the only one that has been making love with her.

"I was tempted and the devil got me. The thing started one day when I came back from work and met her lying naked on top of bed and I was tempted to have sex with her," he said, admitting that the last time he had intercourse with her was last March.

But the 12 year old daughter denied that the sex was willful. She said the problem started the day her father bought her a drink and after taking it she became unconscious. She said when she woke up the next day she observed some semen on her private parts.

She said four days later, the father came and apologised to her and informed her that he was the one that made her to be unconscious.

She said her father had turned her to a sex machine by having sex with her almost every night.

She said the father divorced her mother and married another wife who later died after giving birth to twins. "I was staying in the village before my father came and picked me at the age of seven to take care of the twins. It was when I came and started staying with him that he began having sex with me."

She appealed to individuals and corporate organisations to assist her by taking her away from the father.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Lagos State, Mr. Frank Mba, said the suspect would be charged to court for incest.

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old groundnut hawker has been reportedly assaulted by an unknown rapist while hawking her wares at the Sabo area of Ibadan.

The spokeswoman of the Oyo State Police Command, Ms Olabisi Okuwobi, said in Ibadan yesterday that the victim’s father, Mr. Samuel Agbaf, reported the incident at the Sabo Police station.

Okuwobi said the victim was taken to the police station with blood-stained pants and was later rushed to the old Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan, for treatment.

The PPRO said in a related development, a 30-year-old nursery school teacher had been arrested by the police in Ibadan for allegedly inserting his finger into the private part of a 12-year-old pupil of his school.

She said the victim’s father, Mr. Olawale Omoniyi, reported the incident to the police.

Okuwobi said Omoniyi brought his daughter to the police station and reported that the teacher inserted his finger into his daughter’s vagina with force and later promised to marry her. She said the victim had been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The spokeswoman also reported the case of a 33-year-old man who was accused of defiling a four-year-old girl.

Okuwobi said the girl’s father, Mr. Victor Adeyemo, told the police that the suspect sent the girl’s brother on an errand to buy beans cake for him.

"Before the victim’s brother could come back, the suspect had lured her inside his room, laid her on his bed and defiled her. The suspect used his male organ to push the victim’s pant aside where he started using his manhood to defile the little girl,’’ Okuwobi quoted the victim’s father as saying in his statement.

The spokeswoman said the victim later reported the incident to her elder brother who called their mother on phone.

She said the suspect had been arrested while the victim had been taken to the hospital for examination and treatment.

You have hit the nail on the head! Imagine the VP stating that the project would be delivered on schedule, but fails to state what the schedule is?

The last promise was 6,000 MW by December 2009; and we all know what happened to that pipe dream. Goodluck apologised to the nation for the failure to attain the 6,000 MW but refused to declare when the target would be achieved.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a strong feeling that by January 2011 we will still be fantasising over the elusive 6,000 MW.

Remember, how it took intense media pressure before Jonathan publicly declared his assets of N295m, several weeks after his boss?); Electoral reform (keep dreaming, they are still playing hide and seek with the Uwais report whilst Jonathan ponders on who to appoint as head of INEC, to umpire an election in which he is widely speculated to contest the presidency), Power/Electricity (another mirage, Nigerians have forgotten that the same Jonathan was the head of the committee that Yar'adua appointed to ensure that the Independent Power Projects deliver 6,000 megawats by Dec 2009. Jonathan promised that by 2010 nobody in Nigeria would have to use a generator). The arrest of former Delta State governor, James Ibori, in far away Dubai on Wednesday, sparked violent protests in his hometown, Oghara yesterday.
Angry youths clad in war-like outfit trooped to the streets early in the morning and barricaded several streets to register their disenchantment over the fate that has befallen their idol.

During the protest, some of the protesting youths were injured when they clashed with security agents deployed there to maintain peace and order while the Federal Government has beefed up security in the area with the deployment of troops to Oghara and the neighbouring communities including Warri, Effurun.
Meanwhile, mixed reactions have continued to greet Ibori’s arrest.
A former Health Commissioner in the state, Dr Richard Tosanwumi, described the development as a big shame that Chief Ibori has allowed himself to be treated like a common criminal and fugitive.

The Chairman, Central Working Committee, Delta State Elders and Leaders Stakeholders Forum contended that the invitation for questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) based on the forums petition should not have led to the ex-governor fleeing the country if his hands were clean as he professes.
According to him, Ibori had severally expressed confidence in the country’s judicial system, adding, why then did he chose to abscond. While insisting that Ibori must comply with the rule of law, he said: “His arrest by Interpol, if proven to be true, has put Deltans in bad light all over the world.

Delta State Elders, Leaders and Stakeholders’ Forum is a patriotic, serous minded body which is determined to ensure that anybody who defraud our state is brought to Justice.”
An Asaba-based legal luminary, Barrister Barrister Chukwuma Ebu said, “If it is true that he has been arrested, the thing was that why should he have ran to the extent of being arrested at another country. Nobody is above the law. He should face EFCC whatever charges are brought against him. Ibori is rich enough to hire chains of SANs to defend himself, so why running in the first place? I don’t want to draw any conclusion that by running he was guilty. Now that he has been found, they will arraign him. I have a feeling that the court might not willingly grant him bail because of his antecedent. Take El-Rufai for instance, he was arraigned and released on bail. Even PDP national chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor was arraigned released on bail because of his antecedents. The court knows that they will be available to stand their trials. By running, EFCC will think he might jump bail. But by and large, he must face the music because nobody is above the law.”

Also reacting, former State Commissioner for Education and Water Resources, and state PDP deputy chairman, Chief Ighoyota Amori said Ibori was already on bail. “He is on bail already. Dubai is an emirate where the rule of law is strictly practised. We have no fear that the Judiciary there will live upto their expectations.”
Governorship candidate, of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) in 2007 Comrade Emmanuel Odafe Igbine declined comments, stressing, “I have no comment for now until I get full details and facts of the reported arrest.
On his part, Chairman of Isoko South Local governmentCouncil and ALGON Chairman, Delta State, Chief Askia Ogeih said, the man was my boss. No matter what happens.”
On its part, the EFCC has expressed delight at the arrest of the former governor who had earlier been declared wanted by the Commission.

According to a statement signed by EFCC spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the anti-graft agency is working with other security agencies such as Interpol and Met Police in the United Kingdom (UK) on the possible extradition of the former governor from Dubai, United Arabs Emirate (UAE).
According to the statement, the EFCC chairman, Farida Waziri, has explained that the arrest of Ibori might not be unconnected with the search for him by Nigerian security agencies and an international warrant of arrest issued against him by the Met Police in UK.

“Yes, we have been working on the former governor. It has been confirmed that Ibori was arrested by the Interpol. We have been exchanging information and interacting with the Interpol and the met police since we declared him wanted. International warrant of arrest was also issued. Yesterday, he was arrested and he is undergoing interrogation with them there. The man in charge of his case in the UK has dispatched detectives to Dubai and we are sending our own people to join them to start the process for his extradition. We also have our cases against him here pending. That is the good news.

“We have a case against him in the appeal court Benin , the 170 count charges. We appealed, the case came up and he was not there. Two, we have fresh charges for which we want to arraign him totally different from the earlier charges. There are other charges against him which we don’t want to reveal for now. As I told you, we have been working very closely but quietly with the Met police. We have been sharing information and we have issues which we don’t want to go into. We are talking with the Interpol, the Met police and the Dubai police whose custody he is right now.
“My initial reaction when I heard of Ibori’s arrest was that of excitement, and surprise too. Surprise because somebody said he had gone to Ghana. Some people also said he was still somewhere in Delta, some said, in his Village in Warri. My mind never went to Dubai. But the Met police had a relationship with Dubai police. They told me that if he was in Dubai they would get him that it would be easier to track him down .If he had gone to places like China or Japan, and then it would have been difficult. I was very excited.

“EFCC is prepared to prosecute him without leaving any loose end. Before, we declared him wanted, of course to arraign him. We have some charges and we have witnesses and we are prepared on our side,” she said.
Meanwhile, chief Ibori has appealed to his supporters, aides, friends and political associates not to be unduly bothered about the ordeal he is going through as the rule of law is always there to protect any victim of persecution.
Ibori in a statement signed by Tony Eluemunor ascribed his travail to his political enemies in Nigeria and their United Kingdom co-conspirators “just to influence the outcome of the case against some of his associates in a London court. “That case has gone on for months, and it is in its final stretch now and judgement should be given within days.

The prosecution has since closed its case while the defence will make their closing statement on Friday today. That is why both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and their London Metropolitan Police collaborators have renewed their malicious legal battering against me for no reason whatsoever. It is on record that up till this moment, both agencies have not been able to categorically state the charges they have against me -whether individually or collectively,” he said.

He asked his followers to take solace in that fact that those who denigrated his name by alleging that he was fleeing from the law, while he was actually under the protection of the Federal High Court, Asaba ruling, will no longer make such a claim, because today, he walked out of a court on bail, his whereabouts not in doubt and no law officers on his trail. “Today, the question where is Ibori, has been laid to rest. I am in Dubai and the world knows it,” he said.

Ibori Gets Bail In Dubai, Reassures Supporters

Former Delta State Governor, James Ibori, walked out of a Dubai court on Thursday on bail, after he was arrested the previous day.

A statement issued by his Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, said he was in a hotel room by 9 p.m. on Wednesday when security agents came in, introduced themselves as acting on behalf of Interpol, saying he was wanted in London.

Eluemunor confirmed that Ibori was arrested on a United Kingdom warrant, which failed to give details of the crime he allegedly committed.

He reiterated that Ibori has not been extradited to anywhere and is still in Dubai according to the bail terms.

The statement explained that when Ibori asked why he was wanted in London, the security agents said it was over credit card fraud.

When Ibori told them that he had not been to London since 2005, they modified the reason and said he was wanted for theft.

Ibori told them that since they were not sure of the charge levelled against him, he would not go with them to London, so they took him to a police station instead.

On Thursday, he was taken to court where he was granted bail, and was allowed to go.

Meanwhile, Ibori has asked his supporters, aides, friends, and political associates not to be unduly bothered about the ordeal he is going through as the rule of law is there to protect any victim of persecution.

“I am presently being persecuted owing to my political belief,” he said.

He accused his political enemies in Nigeria and their United Kingdom co-conspirators of declaring him wanted over charges that have not yet been made public, just to influence the case against his associates in a London court.

“That case has gone on for months, and is on its final stretch now and judgment should be given within days. The prosecution has since closed its case while the defence will make its closing statement on Friday (today).

“That is why both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and their London Metropolitan Police collaborators have renewed their malicious legal battering against me for no reason whatsoever.

“It is on record that up till this moment, both agencies have not been able to categorically state the charges they have against me – whether individually or collectively.”

Ibori urged his supporters to take solace in the fact that those who disparaged his name by alleging that he is fleeing from the law, while he is actually under the protection of the Asaba Federal High Court ruling, will no longer make such a claim – because on Thursday, he walked out of a court on bail.

He maintained that his whereabouts are not in doubt and there are no law officers on his trail.

“Today, the question, where is Ibori, has been laid to rest. I am in Dubai and the world knows it.”

Back in Nigeria, the Chairman of the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Peace and Security in Warri South, Kingsley Tenumah, warned that the arrest of Ibori will spark off ethnic politics that could lead to a fresh round of conflict in the state.

He urged President Goodluck Jonathan to tread softly so as not to be seen as taking vengeance on anyone.

Peter Odili is a free man because he obtained a perpetual court injunction restraining anybody and everybody from arresting him and/or charging him to court. In effect, he has everlating immunity and is above the law until the injunction is overturned.

You have said it all! This is a private PDP arrangement and is not constitutionally binding on Nigeria.

As an aside, I really don't care about the tribe, gender, religion, political party or stature of the President as long as s/he revives the economy, provides stable power and water supply, figths corruption without fear or favour, revamps our infrastructure (including hospitals, roads, schools etc) and allows peace and justice to reign. That is what really matters!!!!!

I hope we are both wrong but I also have the same feeling.

Just too many unanswered questions about Mr Goodluck such as:

The story about his wife being caught with $13m dollars at MMH (The first time I read the story was a few months after he became governor of Bayelsa)

His refusal to declare his assets untill the press got on his case (and besides how did he earn the huge sum of money he grudgingly declared?, can't remember how much it is , I think over N250M)

The allegation of misappropriation that was alluded to by Timipre Syla when he (Sylva) took over as governor

Equally worrisome is the fact that the 6,000 mw project was being supervised by Jonathan and we all know what became of that. If you listened carefully to the recent speech by Babalola the Minister for Power he said that the major problem had been the supply of gas which had been reported to the then Vice President, Jonathan Goodluck.
I really hope I am completely wrong but all of the above do not give me any confidence about the Acting Prez. I hope we are not going thru the normal deja vu of gra gra and raised expectations for a few months, then business as usual.

I think the main problem of Naija footy is that they don't play together, they are strangers on the pitch. We need total overhaul, starting from the Glasshouse. Odegbami as NFF boss, Siasia as Coach, Mastroudes to drum up corporate sponsorship/private sector investment to search for/motivate, nurture and develop new home grown talent.

Its called Palm Wine or Palmy for short. If you are fortunate enough to catch the palmwine tapper on his descent from the tree, before he mixes the fresh natural brew with saccharin, water and a few other chemicals then you can look forward to the sip of your life.
Better still, if you chill it in the fridge for an hour or so; there is no fruit drink or beverage known to man that can compete with Palmy. It is sweet with the right, subtle twinge of bitternes. How did you place your order?

I always send an email to my broker specfying the price at which I want to buy a particular stock, the number of units required and the total cost of the transaction including broker fees/commission.

I also specify the maximum price per unit I'm willing to pay for the stock which must not be exceeded.

I then follow up with a phone call, asking him to check his email and execute.

Problem nipped in the bud! (Of course if he flouts these instructions my emails are proof and can be used to nail him at SEC).

To be honest, these Naija brokers are irritating pests we can't do without.

In my opinion, you seem pretty clued up with your finances.

Keep at it, but you may wish to spash out on yourself every now and then. This in itself does not have to be extravagent, just look for the best deal/bargain out there and spoil yourself a bit.

Meanwhile, keep saving/investing till you clock 50 and then you can reap the rewards of your savvy financial strategy.
