When playing liverpool, you don't try to press them if you don't have overwhelmingly world class players like real madrid in every area of the pitch to blow liverpool off the park.
You wait and let them come to you and then hit their porous defence on the counter. That is why chelsea is the only top english team that gives liverpool problem.
And that is why Liverpool lose against small teams because they over-press those small teams and so get destroyed on the counter .

Now consider that United only lost 3/4 games last season. We finished 6th not because of losing to any big club, buth those unnecessary draws against teams like Burnley, Stoke etc.

The league will be very close this year due to the high level of investment.
