Religion / Islamic State Frees 19 Of 220 Abducted Assyrian Christians by CVHP: 10:02am On Mar 06, 2015 |
Nineteen of an estimated 220 members of an Assyrian Christian community kidnapped by Islamic State (IS) in north-eastern Syria have been released, activists say. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said an Assyrian commander had told it of the releases. Some reports say the releases were made in exchange for a sum of money. The kidnappings took place shortly before dawn on 23 February, when IS militants swept into about 12 villages. Men, women and children from the villages, located on the southern bank of the Khabur river, near the town of Tal Tamr, were taken captive. Correspondents say that news of the releases will provide some comfort to the Christian Assyrian community - which has been devastated by the abductions - even though there is concern for those still being held. Assyrian Christian officials said that the 16 men and three women who were released arrived safely on Sunday at the Church of the Virgin Mary in the city of Hassakeh. He said the 19 - all from the village of Tal Ghoran - had been transported by bus from the IS-held town of Shaddadeh, which is south of Hassakeh. Some reports say that all those freed were about 50 or older, indicating that age might be a factor. The Assyrian Human Rights Network said the captives gained their freedom after a Sharia court ordered them to pay an unspecified amount of money levied as a tax on non-Muslims. Assyrian leaders and Sunni tribal sheikhs are trying to negotiate with IS to secure the release of the remaining captives, activists said. It is estimated that up to 40,000 Assyrians lived in Syria - alongside the overall Christian population of 1.2 million - before the country's civil war broke out in 2011. The Assyrians, one of the world's oldest Christian communities, have been under increasing pressure since IS captured large parts of the country. Some 1,000 local Assyrian families are believed to have fled their homes in the wake of the abductions. Politics / Shekau's 'death': We Reserve Our Comment, Says FG by CVHP: 12:49pm On Aug 22, 2013 |
Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, might have died after being fatally wounded during a gun duel with the Nigerian Army. The JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, had said in a statement that Shekau sustained serious gunshot wounds in an encounter with the troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on June 30, 2013 and that it was believed that he was dead. Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, on Wednesday, said the Federal Government's position since the declaration of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states was to allow the military carry out their operations and manage information emanating from the operations without interference. Maku said it was the government's view that the military should be allowed to tell its story without undue "political comments" by government officials. He said, "You will notice that since the President proclaimed the state of emergency three months ago, we have kept political comments out of it. We decided that it is better for the military to tell their story and that is why I have not spoken on it. "We want to remove this security operation from any misunderstanding, especially from politicians. As a government, it is our operation but the most important thing is to allow the military tell the story of what is happening. "From the story you and I have read, it is very clear that this state of emergency has achieved a lot of result for which all Nigerians are proud of the performance of our military and security services." The minister however said the information released by security agencies on the possible death of the sect leader was a morale booster for Nigerians and the military. He said the implication was that security forces were closing in on the insurgents. He asked Nigerians to continue to pray for the security operatives so that they could continue to succeed in their bid to rid the nation of terrorists. He said, "Relating to the story (Shekau's possible killing) that we have read, I think it is better we leave it at that. These people are on the run and we will allow the military to tell the story. "The military said that it would appear that in one of their operations, the leader of the insurgents was mortally wounded and they were rushing him from place to place and they believe that he could indeed be dead. There is no question of losing confidence. It should give us more confidence. "What it means is that the security forces are closing up on some of the kingpins of this murderous group that has denied thousands of Nigerians their lives. Some of the key leaders have been pronounced dead." The minister said that normalcy was gradually returning to troubled northern states as a result of efforts of security forces. He said many parts of Borno State that had already come under siege had been reclaimed and the militants dislodged. Politics / Islamist Militias Merge, Declare Jihad On France by CVHP: 12:39pm On Aug 22, 2013 |
Remember Islam's is "PEACE" An Al Qaeda-linked militia founded by wanted Islamist commander Mokhtar Belmokhtar announced on Thursday it had joined forces with another armed group to take revenge against France for its military offensive in Mali. Belmokhtar’s Mauritania-based Al-Mulathameen Brigade (The Brigade of the Masked Ones) and the Mali-based Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) said they had joined forces under a single banner to unite Muslims across the region. “Your brothers in MUJAO and Al-Mulathameen announce their union and fusion in one movement called Al-Murabitoun to unify the ranks of Muslims around the same goal, from the Nile to the Atlantic,” the groups said in a statement published by Mauritanian news agency ANI. Belmokhtar, a one-eyed Algerian former commander of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), allegedly masterminded a siege in January of an Algerian gas plant in which 38 hostages, including three Americans, died. Branded “The Uncatchable”, Belmokhtar is also thought to have been behind twin car bombings in Niger in May that left at least 20 people dead. The Algeria siege and the Niger assaults were said to have been carried out in retaliation for France’s military intervention launched in January against Islamist groups in Mali. Belmokhtar, who broke away from AQIM in 2012 and was involved in the fighting against Chadian forces in Mali, was reported to have been killed in action in March. The reports, however, were never confirmed and it is believed that he remains at large. He has been designated a foreign terrorist by the United States since 2003, with the State Department offering a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. MUJAO is thought to be led by Mauritanian ethnic Tuareg Ahmed Ould Amer, who goes by the nom de guerre “Ahmed Telmissi”. The group broke away from AQIM in mid-2011 with the apparent goal of spreading jihad further into areas of west Africa not within AQIM’s scope. It was one of a number of Islamist groups that occupied northern Mali last year, imposing a brutal interpretation of Islamic sharia law characterised by amputations, beatings and executions, before being ousted by the French-led military intervention. The statement said the two men had signed a document announcing their merger and ceding command of the new movement to “another personality”, without revealing the identity of the new leader, according to ANI. The statement said the jihadist movement in the region was now “stronger than ever” and threatened France and its allies, promising “to rout their troops”. Al-Murabitoun — an Arabic phrase meaning “the sentinels” — was the name given to a Berber dynasty of Morocco which formed an empire in the 11th century. Today the name is used by a Nasserist political party in Lebanon. Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/08/islamist-militias-merge-declare-jihad-on-france/ |
Business / Chinese Firm Sells Toxic Waste To Nigerian Importer by CVHP: 12:25pm On Aug 22, 2013 |
A Chinesebased company, Shijiazhuang Qixiang Chemical Co. Ltd, has been exposed over alleged exportation of sand-like toxic waste in place of caustic soda to unsuspecting Nigerian importer, Christo Ventures Ltd, in Lagos. According to reports, the Nigerian importer had placed an order for 10 by 20ft containers of caustic soda (NaOH) from the Chinese company, but to the Christo’s amazement, the consignment was in contrast with what it expected. Some of the seized fake products at the briefing, yesterday. Photo: Biodun Ogunleye. Christo Ventures Ltd is said to have been a chemical importer recognised by NAFDAC and has a current permit to import, N0. 1300280 of 2013 with the item, caustic soda listed as N0.15 on the permit. However, luck ran out of the Chinese firm when the officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, upon examination during its routine joint physical checks at the Sifax Bonded Terminal on June 7 2013, observed that the physical characteristic of the consignment was in contrast with the expected caustic soda that usually appears in pearls. The suspicion led the agency to draw samples from three of the 10 containers for further laboratory analysis. Fortunately, the result of the analysis showed that the substance shipped to Christo Ventures by the Chinese company was not caustic soda, contrary to both parties’ agreement. Reacting to the development, NAFDAC Director-General, Dr. Paul Orhii, who was represented by a director in the agency, Mrs. Hauwa Keri, told newsmen that the sand-like substance, which could be re-extracted to get hard drugs, could also constitute serious hazards to the environment as well as security risk. On his part, Managing Director of Christo Ventures, Christian Udeh, who alleged that he was duped by the Chinese company said the had invested over N30 million in the business. jhydebaba: The state of the nation is not funny presently. All these could have been averted if my former and present presidents had a fore-sight and have put up measures to check poverty long ago instead of siphoning funds. Now, we turn all our resources in fighting our fellow country men, I begin to ask myself how many lives we still have to waste before peace is totally restored Can't all the money spent on security now be channeled into productive means for the citizens before now Are politicians not the root cause of these menace when they give out ammunitions during election period which are hard to retrieveHey this isn't poverty-it's simply brainwash ideologies. Have you bother to check the net worth of Alqeada, Al Shabab, Taliban, Hezbollah et al. Though not legitimate but substantiative to a large extent and they are engaged in Terrorism across the world? The Almajiri system can be likened to the devious character. How do you explain if your biological father marries 20 wives + 55 children all in the name of your Allah will provide for them. Take a look @ the streets in Nigeria filled with Northerners begging with confidence. Some even selling DAGGER and SWORD. Is that the fault of Past and present presidents?
