MightySparrow:
If you were in his shoes you would understand better. Igbos and the north were political friends while West played opposition. He was facing a threat from his political friend and another from Awolowo who wanted a secession without shedding the blood of his people.
If you were such a leader, would you want the nation to disintegrate like that?
Tinubu, our current president once said he didn't believe in Nigeria. Now, as the president, would he wish the nation to scatter?
I don't think so.

Aburi truce was between the two warring sides and it didn't solve the problem in its totality. He had to choose the easiest way out, which was war

Mind you,he is a soldier. He thinks like a. military man not a civilian. So, when you people criticize, think about the man also

Tinubu is punishing us now for his economic life policy as an accountant, who believe in saving money and having value for money. Whatever his reasons I need food on my table. Yet he sticks to his policy.
Na sọ my brother.
The igbos should allow the dead dog to lie and do reasonable politicking. The last election showed that something great is in the about to happen. Rather than igbos abusing everybody, especially yorubas, it is easier to get the presidency through the three southern, geopolitical zones and Christian middle belt than aligning with the north. For now, the north doesn't want a Igbo president.
Your write-up is full of nonsense but it's not your fault - you just don't know. But I don't know where to start.
Gowon was not aligned with Igbos at all - the counter coup that brought him to power was a revenge against Igbos and dozens Igbo officers were killed.
Gowon reneging on Aburi was on the advice of people like Prince Solomon Akenzua, later Oba Erediauwa. Has nothing to do with anything you said.
Awolowo did not want secession. He did say West would secede if East seceded - a threat he couldn't live up to and instead accepted Minister of finance under Gowon.
This thread is a special on Gowon's 90th birthday. Has nothing to do with things you were saying.

The federal government retaliated Biafrian raids. Biafrian raids started long before.
You have just been shown it clearly stated who attacked fiirst.
You agree things should make a little bit of sense, rught? What sense does it make Biafra attacking. On what basis would Biafra be attacking Nig??!
Politics › Re: The Biafran War: Who Was The Aggressor? by DaddyCoool(f):
I also support a united Nigeria, but you are telling a total lie in claiming the FG was not the aggressor.
FG reneged on Aburi that was painstakingly crafted and which they willingly signed. Also, FG forces were the first to actually attack (see below)

The assertion bolded above is not entirely true. Agreed that Gowon did entrenched and also expanded on the unification decree with the aid of his advisers however, it was Ironsi who established the notion as advised by his *3-men advisory team who incidentally, were all igbos like himself.
Look, decree 34 (which was promulgated under coup conditions) was promulgated in May and Ironsi died exactly two months later, in July. There was no effect WHATSOEVER from the decree. There was no unitary government. The person who established unitary government in Nigeria is Gowon! 100%! He could have easily rescinded the decree, but not only did he not do that, he reneged on Aburi accord that did just that!

* I thought it was said Ironsi surrounded himself with Notherners. Can you name this all-Igbo advisory team?

When I did Government at school, the multiple choice answer to a question about who introduced Unitary government would not have been Gowon, it would have been Aguiyi Ironsi.

I like and admire your debating style actually because it is pretty robust and comprehensive, maybe needlessly tinged with insults but I have learnt a thing or two from your posts so that's ok.

And with that, I bid our debate a fare thee well and leave the floor to you to roll and up if you feel the need to.

I also wish you a blessed week ahead.
Also wishing you the best in the week ahead.
There has to relevancy to things. The relevant question is, who's fault is it we are in the uber-unitary mess we're in today (even US is not this unitary)? Who established, entrenched, and expanded it? Answer: Gowon and his advisers, NOT Ironsi!

My honest answer will be that I am not a Muslim, neither is Gowon as it happens.
Aah, but you're wrong - everyone is a Muslim.😎
It is clearly NOT Ironsi's fault - he disappeared before he barely knew what he was doing. Let's say Ironsi had decreed all heads of state would serve 20 years then died almost immediately. And the next leader signed an Aburi accord abolishing it, then reneged on it and took steps to establish tradition of all HoS serving 20 years. Who's faul would it be??

TBH their names and customs and even appearance seem suspiciously Igbo to me as an outsider. But if they themselves say they are from Benin... why would they say that? My question is WHY.

Forget Aburi, it was Aguyi Ironsì that introduced unitary government by decree. The Politics text books can't be wrong.

I am not blaming him so stop being defensive. Whatever Gowon did or the other stuff you are throwing in for distraction purposes is neither here nor there, Okay!
OK, let's put it to you another way. What were the EFFECTS of Ironsi's unitary govt before Gowon came along? List them

Per the bolded, in whose government was the decree for "unitarism" enacted? Why are YOU PEOPLE so full of lies and deceit and averse to the truth?

The OP wrongly blamed Gordon for introducing something and you are hear mumbling about "coup conditions" and "effectively" in their defence.
What "YOU PEOPLE" is telling you is that there was NO EFFECT whatsoever of a unitary govt until Gowon cane along. He was the one who took actions to EFFECT it, expand it, and consolidate it. He even reneged on an agreement to jettison it. Hence the father of unitary government as we have it today in Nigeria is Gowon NOT Ironsi!

gidgiddy:
Google Gowons Decree 14 where he abolished the 4 Region's Nigeria had, and created 12 new states to replace them

Then Google Gowons Decree 15 where he abolished resource control
Not only that, but most importantly, an Aburi accord was painstakingly crafted abolishing it, and Gowon SIGNED it, effectively ending Ironsi's yet-to- be-implemented unitary govt.
The unitary govt we have today in Nigeria was started by Gowon when he reneged on Aburi, created states, etc.

U dey kerase
How can you compare someone who introduced something under coup conditions to someone who insisted on perpetuating it. Besides, if there was indeed unitary govt, power would have been concentrated in the center and Ojukwu wouldn't have had the wherewithal to challenge the FG.
Gowon was the person who EFFECTIVELY introduced unitary govt by breaking up the regions to weaken them and introducing the current structure of armed forces and police

Who is "you people"?? You don't know me from Adam. But in your small parochial mind everybody must be packaged into your little tribal groups.

WHAT DOES IT MATTER WHAT IRONSI DID?? He was in power for only SIX MONTHS! Is there any law that says it can't be undone - which was exactly what Aburi did! Instead of focusing on who insisted on perpetuating unitary rule, you'd be focusing on a short-lived condition put in place due to extraordinary circumstances! That is what is called DISHONESTY!

Well, consider that Gowon was only 31 years old and not versed in these things nor well-educated like Ojukwu. So he had to massively depend on advice. When he came back from Aburi people like the guy who later became Oba Akenzuo told him he agreed to nonsense (mainly because oil money was just starting to slush in and all the oil was in the East). If Aburi had stood, with oil money the East would have quickly become richer and stronger than the Federal government and all the other regions combined!

But why 419, Indians teach themselves good skills not dirty tricks. At least the Indians i interacted with, talk about how to be smart in good things.
I know there are terrible indians just saying from the little i know. I felt more close to the indian than to the nigerians, because nigerians are complicated abroad, they are high survival mode like gangs, i no get time for their drama. grin

What i did, was to learn the good triats of other foreign people and i tried to be like that to other Nigerians. I know it wont make any difference since we are hard wired to be self centered, but hopefully one of the new generations will learn to be better.

We cant change slave mentality from abroad it started from home.
You're talking from your own narrow world. Plus, your comparison is unfair because Indians have a separate religion, Hindu, that only them practice, that helps bind them. But despite not having their own religion, Nigerians have their own Nigerian churches (like RCCG, Winners, Christ Embassy), that other immigrant groups don't have. Bottom line, I bet you other immigrant groups also see Nigerians as working together. How do you think other groups see themselves when they view things like these below?
