“A scientific discovery is also a religious discovery. There is no conflict between science and religion. Our knowledge of God is made larger with every discovery we make about the world.”
Joseph H. Taylor, Jr., 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics, discovered the first known binary pulsar, and proponent of the Big Bang theory

Nairaland / General / Re: Boat Mishap Along Port Harcourt-Bonny Sea Route (Pics At Viewers Discretion) by Daddyzee: 9:06pm On Aug 29, 2014
kel4soft:

Life jacket work depending on the current of the water the jacket is been usel, the essence of life jacket is to suspend you for the time been when there is an accident pending when you will have rescue operatives. Bonny water especially this Peterside area is something else, the wave there can scare the hell out of someone. I won't be surprise if some of those victims died as a result of fear.

Life jackets indeed work, but the usage depends on the type of boat (open boat or enclosed)

In the case of open boats, which I recommend, you must wear your life vests. In case of mishaps, you are thrown into the water and the vest suspends you until rescue comes. It could actually suspend you for days. For Bonny area, help usually comes in minutes. (Avoid night travels)

For closed boats however, if there is a mishap, you are not thrown into the sea. You are rather confined inside the boat and the vests will make it impossible for you to swim out!!! You will therefore be trapped. This was what happened in the unfortunate accident this morning. The boat drivers do not help matters as they also overload the boats, blocking the isles with seats. This will multiply the chances of not being able to come out as many passengers will struggle within that confined space. The survivors are usually those near the entrance.

Safety tips
1. Use open boats and wear life vests for the duration of the journey.
2. If closed boats is the only option, do not wear life vest inside the boat. Stay as near the entrance as possible. If possible, gang up with other passengers and ensure the captain does not block the isle with seats to accommodate more passengers.
3. Avoid night travels
4. Boats with double engines record less breakdowns. Use them if possible

May God give their families the grace to bear the unfortunate loss

Computers / Re: Any Mac Os X Fan Here by Daddyzee: 12:43pm On Feb 10, 2010
Hi Folks,

Never knew there are apple freaks like me. I got an ipod 3 years ago and between then and now, I have used 3 ipods, the latest being my latest toy , the 32G Ipod Touch 3rd Generation. Last November, I decided to try the macbook and I got myself a macbook air and the feeling has been breathtaking. I ended up buying the MC207LL for my wife, who by the way is also a huge fan.

1 problem though, I have not been able to transfer videos and photos from the mac to my itouch. I notice that the sychronisation only attempts to transfer from the itouch to the computer and not the other way round. I tried several permutations with itunes and it appears it only receives videos purchased from itunes store.

I know I have not done the right thing and I am back to naija where unfortunately there are no friendship centers.

Any assistance?

Daddy

Hi Gurus the site have been of immense help yo me please advice me what are your take on Equity Assurance and Lasaco insurance
Guys,
It's been two bloody weeks, at least for me.  I had a couple of panic sell offs and as result, the cash balance in my portfolo is scary, at least by my standard, very scary.
My bank offered me a facility whereby all my stocks will be placed in lien and transfered to a special account. They in turn will give me a fund that is 2.33times the total portfolio value. The sum is very huge brother, (No need to mention the figure to protect the faint herated, my first loan from a bank undecided

Problem is I have no clue where to start. I was looking at low caps
Beta Glass,
Scoa,
Chellarams
Dunlop

I am also looking at
Oceanic bank
Unilever
Lasaco
Equity

But then I am more familiar with engines and projects than with the capital market. We need to keep securing our futures however.

Lets rub minds.

My brother,

I had loose dough in one of my accounts my better 'judgement' was in favour of dumping all in Oceanic and see how it goes. The broker (actually the head of research in his firm) encouraged me to  split the dough into two and do C&I and Unilever 50/50. I entered yesterday. According to him, their results are due soon and so much restructuring is going on at the moment. He hinted at a bonus issue by both company and he gave a 3-4months horison. According to him, Oceanic UBA Zenith and Diamondall have a 9-11month horison. I am not too good at the market and I may need to put in more dough within the next few days.

What's your take?

Pumping, Windy,, Guys,
Help out a bro in need.

I just offloaded a large chunk of my IBTC shares and I have (annoyingly so) so much cash balance in my portfolio. Someone told me It was a bad decision but what the heck, I have over 150% returns.

Problem, What do I buy with all that cash. I need to do so within the next few day before I go dark again. I will be dark for a minimum of 1month during which my access to the internet will be limited to a few minutes per day and monitoring of the market will be very difficult.

So pleeaase consider carefully before you advice as so much dough is on the line. Thanks a million

oshkosh so all this talk of IBTC not sending anyone true-- my home boy told me the same thing that though they R viewed as trail blazers they are inpersonal don`t reply emails and their website is wack as  most browsers advise against accessing their stockbroking site

Hey Bro, My personal experience might help. I got so frustrated with IBTC once that I had to log on to their site and copied the names of all the folks in their stock brokerage department. I called the help lines for their three of their Lagos offices requesting to speak with a couple of those names. I chose a time when the offices must have closed and gave an impression I had to reach them regarding a mandate which they must act on. I struck gold. I got GSM numbers of three people and they have been my contact since then. I call them each time I send a mandate as well as copy them in any of my mandates. It has worked, at least so far.
Good luck wink  wink wink wink wink

Hi Guys,
This is actually my first post to this forum (though I have been secretely benefiting from all your posts.   You guys are great.
As to the post on Lasaco, Just watch this.
                             OPEN      HIGH      LOW         CLOSE          VOLUME
FSDH                   5.18          5.64       5.12        5.12            142,282,350
TRW                     5.38         5.64        5.12       5.24             151,400,519

CPTL ASSETS        5.18         5.64        5.12       5.39             181,846,675
Quite confusing huh. Guys what do you think?

SO u are one of the deep pockets eh?
The NSE website reads
NSE                 5.18         5.64        5.12       5.39             181,846,675

The FSDH spreadsheet by email also has the correct NSE numbers. My advice; wait till ~ 6PM lagos time and get the data from Zenith Sec, NigerianSecurities, the FSDH spreadsheet or the NSE website. All those sources should jive by then and are authentic. Anything that comes out early is work-in-progress.

My Brother!!! No pocket is deep enough. We shall get there though wink wink

Thanks for the clarificafication.

Guys, If you entered Lasaco at between 4.03 and 4.15 about two weeks ago, at what point will you realistically come out considering the uncertainties in the Insurance sector.

Also what are your objective thoughts about entering Diamond Bank Tomorrow. I have been not been able to do more than 25% with Diamond Bank in 2months inspite of all the hype. Both of my brokers adviced me to buy more of it.

Aside Diamond bank, any thoughts on where to enter between tomorrow and Friday.

I tried unsucessfully for the past three weeks to get into a few of the private placements. Maybe Lead Capital did not try hard enough. Any one available now?

I also put in a mandate for the past one week for Skye bank on the floor and same story,  not available(Even when IBTC bought a little for me within the same time frame.

So much querries bah smiley smiley smiley
