Yes, the constant male studs are very present on his ears. And famous well shaped beards are also not missing on his face. Even the regular sunshades (he probably wears them indoors) are there to complement his looks.

But Banky W’s fans may need to look very closely at this picture, which was posted on a blog a few days ago, in order to recognise the popular R&B singer. Something is obviously missing in this picture. For years, Banky W has gone everywhere with his signature hats. Of course they have come in different shapes, sizes, fabrics and colour, but the hats have been forever present on his head, whether indoors, outside or at shows. Only a few people can claim to have seen the ‘capable’ singer without his hat. And there have been several speculations among fans and music buffs as to why the award-winning singer/producer is always wearing a hat.

Tongues have wagged that Banky is, perhaps, covering a ‘defect’ on his head. Well, with this recent picture, it may appear that the famous artiste might have been shading his ‘bald’ head (or is it self-inflicted skin cut?) from his fans. Could it be that he has been shy about leaving his head uncovered? Or he is just not comfortable with being tagged ‘gorimapa’. But really, there is nothing to be shy about that. At least, he can ask 2face or, better yet, Pa Ajasco. But then, the question is: Did Banky W forget his hat at home at the time he took this photograph or is this the new look he wants to project to his fans? What is your take?

What about the proposed marriage na

Finally whatever thread that held the relationship between popular actress Genevieve Nnaji and known musician Dapo Oyebanji- Dbanj- is no more.

They have quarreled and gone their separate ways at press time.

This occurrence is said to be at the instance of the actress.

She is said to be tire of the growing controversies around her name and that of the artiste widely known as the Koko master.

Friends claim that she told them that the phenomenon has started taking away points from her career.

And in order not to end up as just one of the rungs on the ladder of Dbanj’s success she decided to call it quits with the arrangement that netted her two million naira as appearance fee in the musical video tagged ‘Fall in Love’

Investigations conducted revealed that though the video shoot served as publicity gimmick for the celebrated romance between them- an affair did transpired.

Insiders however insist it was only a fling.

Genevieve was said to be all about keeping it very quiet- but the Mo’HIT crew preferred to leverage on it to boost Dbanj’s image as a ladies’ man and the sale of the album, Entertainer.

But when the talks of pregnancy and abortion for the musician by the actress started making the rounds and feasted on by celebrity media, the actress was forced to pull out of the arrangement – with her earning intact.

She believes that the new twist to the affair would leave her with the short end of the stick in the deal.

Her handlers were said to have convinced her that the image of an irresponsible public figure that would result from the development would make nonsense of whatever credits she has to her name within weeks- hence the collapse of the ‘relationship.’

CelebritiesTIMAYA IS NOW UN PEACE AMBASSADOR by DaDoctor(op): 10:07am On Jul 14, 2011
Egberipapa Congrats! TO ME U DESERVE IT

In apparent recognition of his propagation of peace in the restive Niger-Delta region, consistent hitmaker, Enetimi Odom, the musician popularly known as Timaya, has been appointed a Peace Ambassador by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, IIFWP, a division of the United Nations.

According to Dr. Hak Ja Haan Moon, co-founder of the IIFWP, Timaya was especially chosen for this honour because he is “one of those individuals whose lives exemplify the ideal of living for the sake of others, and who dedicate themselves to practices which promote the founding ideals of the IIFWP.”

Among other things, the Peace Ambassadorship comes with a special number plate for the singer.

Reacting to the honour, Timaya says, “I am happy. Honestly, I am. This goes to show that the ideals I am using the instrumentality of my music to preach are not in vain. I have said it in my music and at different fora that Nigeria can only progress unless the Federal Government pays more than lip-service to the agitations of the people of the Niger-Delta. It is even a good thing that the President is from that region which means that things will surely get better. I thank those who deemed it expedient to make me a Peace Ambassador and I promise not to relent in this struggle.”

Moon says further that the new Ambassador for Peace, like others from all over the world, is expected to contribute to the fulfilment of the hope of all ages, a unified world of peace wherein the spiritual and material dimensions of life are harmonized. Thus, Timaya joins a short list of highly rated celebrities including D’fbanj, Ini Edo and Ramsey Noah who are also UN Ambassadors. Interestingly, this recent honour is coming a few weeks after the ‘Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa’ as he is also known was specially recognised and appreciated for his outstanding contributions to the social and cultural development of Sierra-Leone at the country’s 50th Independence anniversary.

Meanwhile, Timaya and his Dem Mama Soldiers  are currently on a 10-country tour of Europe spanning Holland, Greece, Spain, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland and France among others. During the trip, he will perform at the FIFA Women’s World Cup holding in Germany between June 26 and July 17 where the Super Falcons of Nigeria are participating.

PDP demands Fashola resignation

July 14, 2011 12:46AM
print email

The Lagos state chapter of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded for the "immediate resignation" of the governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola over the flooding of most parts of the state on Sunday.

The party also demanded an unreserved apology from the governor and the payment of adequate compensation to the families of those who lost their lives and property in the flood.

The party's publicity secretary in Lagos State, Taofik Gani, made this known in a statement on Wednesday, where it sympathised with residents affected by the two-days heavy downpour.

PDP described the disaster as "an avoidable trauma," insisting that the state government could have done more to prevent the flooding.

"Contrary to the claim by the state government that Lagosians dump refuse and build on the drainage, the actual cause of the flooding is lack of proper drainage. It is uncomplimentary for the state government to accuse Lagos residents for its own negligence, dereliction of duty and maladministration," the statement read.

According to the party, the state government had over the years failed to clear primary drainage in the state which resulted in last Sunday's floods. It also alleged that the blocking of waterways by construction companies also contributed to the flooding.

More blame

Blaming the government for the ongoing Eko Atlantic project, the PDP claimed that the unnecessary sand filling of lagoons, seas and the ocean by the state government also raised the water level of the ocean.

The statement further lamented the frequent collapse of buildings and loss of lives in Lagos State as it blamed the continued collapse of buildings in the state on the inability of the state to punish government officials involved in the monitoring of building construction.

The PDP then called on the state government to provide affordable housing for the people as a way of making substandard buildings unattractive.

Sheriff Fumes: I Didn’t Create Boko Haram
14 Jul 2011

Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former governor of Borno State

By Ahamefula Ogbu, Hammed Shittu in Ilorin and Michael Olugbode

Speaking for the first time since the Boko Haram menace became a national threat, the immediate past governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has denied insinuations by the Chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Lt.-Gen. Jerry Useni (rtd), that a former governor of the state formed the sect to advance his political interest.

Useni did not name the governor in question, but while he was the Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Sheriff was the governor of Borno State.

Sheriff described as lies the allegations that he formed Boko Haram, insisting that the sect had been there years before he became governor.

Meanwhile, more states across the federation are evacuating their indigenes from Borno State on account of the continued killings and unrest in the state, especially as the Joint military Task Force (JTF), a military peace enforcement group, had had running duels with members of the sect resulting in huge casualties.

Sheriff, who spoke to State House correspondents shortly after a closed-door meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, denied that he was summoned and quizzed by the State Security Services (SSS).

He said he went to the SSS on his own but did not explain why, while also denying that he apologised to Boko Haram

Asked his mission to see Jonathan, he said as a former governor, he had the right to see the president on matters important to him.

Sheriff expressed reservations on comments by Useni, who had said that while he (Useni) was on a visit to the state as Deputy National Chairman of ANPP, he saw many boys hawking fuel in jerry cans and asked why the governor allowed it and was told they should be left alone as they were good materials for elections.

Sheriff denied having such a conversation with him, adding that for over 15 years, fuel supply from the Kaduna Refinery to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Maiduguri had been stopped leaving dealers with the option of buying and trucking to the state and selling on street levels.

“Boko Haram had been in existence before I became a governor. The so-called [original] leader of Boko Haram was arrested and was executed in Abuja before I even thought of becoming the governor of Borno State. So, people make comments on what they don’t know and in life, you don’t speak on matters that you are not very competent. Whoever said that I am a mentor of Boko Haram is most unfortunate and it has no truth in the statement," he explained.

On the genesis of Boko Haram as explained by Useni, he said: "This report is not correct. I saw it on the pages of newspapers today. But since I didn’t speak to General Useni, I gave him the benefit of the doubt by not commenting on it but now that you (journalists) said that he came here and he told you, that story was not correct. He said that he saw people selling petrol on major streets of Maiduguri. NNPC depot in Maiduguri did not receive petrol from Kaduna refinery for over 15 years and marketers go to Kaduna and Lagos to get petrol and people buy it and sell.

“So, innocent people cannot be Boko Haram. Boko Haram and these boys selling petrol are two different things. In any case, I did not even introduce the selling of petrol in jerry cans to Borno State it has been in existence before I came. If all the past military and civilian governors in Borno State did not ban the selling of petrol outside petroleum stations, why should I come and ban people who are legitimately earning a living? And there is no responsible government in Borno State or Nigerian that will allow a young man carrying arms on the street and be allowed to sell on the street.

“So, that report is most unfortunate and I am surprised that somebody like General Useni will make a public statement like this because of his age. I respect him and I also believe that he should always be cautious when speaking in public otherwise, the age he has earned and the position he has earned would be in question."

On the allegation that he apologised to the sect as was demanded by them to spare his life, he said when his tenure ended, he apologised to the entire state in the event that he had offended anyone in his eight-year reign. He said the publication in question was an extract from his broadcast and not specifically to Boko Haram members.

According to him, "I didn’t apologise to Boko Haram. I apologised to every citizen of Borno State when I was leaving office in my May 29 speech. You can see that the Boko Haram said that they will stop what they were doing if the governors of Gombe, Bauchi and Borno apologise to them publicly.

“The two governors have done so publicly, I only lifted mine from my May 29 speech on what I have done in the last eight years. I said I have served them for eight years. I must have in one way or the other offended people. I ask everybody that I have offended including Boko Haram to forgive me.”

The former governor has stayed away from Borno State ever since his tenure expired last May 29.

Commenting on the killing of his former commissioner for Local Government, Boji Foi, alleged to be a financier of Boko Haram by the police, he said the man had been in politics before his appointment and was dropped from his cabinet two years before the incident, pointing out that it would be unfair to link him and his administration to it.

"Boji Foi was a politician before I became a governor. He was a chairman of his local government, and like any other person, they brought his name from his local government as a nominee and we appointed him commissioner and at a stage, we found that he was not doing what we wanted and we did not reappoint him. Before the incident of Boko Haram, he was not in the government for two years. So, we couldn’t have taken responsibility and most importantly, I didn’t know when Boji was arrested or when he was killed and who arrested or killed him," he said.

And in continuation of state governments’ determination to rescue their indigenes residing in Borno State, the Kwara State government has dispatched 40 buses to convey its indigenes, including students studying in University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) back home.

States such as Plateau and Anambra had earlier sent buses to the troubled state to evacuate its indigenes. This followed threats and reports of attack by members of Boko Haram in the state.

UNIMAID authorities had early in the week announced the closure of the institution as a result of the insecurity in the state.

The Borno Elders Forum has however called on the Federal Government to withdraw JTF members from the streets of Maiduguri as the security situation has worsened since they arrived the state.

But the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Patrick Azazi (rtd), in response to the forum’s call said in Abuja yesterday that the removal of the troops deployed in Borno State was not a solution to the terrorism crisis.

The Federal Government had deployed soldiers in the state in the wake of incessant bombings and attacks on security agents by the sect.

Leaders in the state have, however, accused members of JTF of killing and harassing innocent citizens and inflicting untold hardship on them, leading to their mass exodus from Maiduguri.

They had claimed that peace had remained a mirage following the intervention of the military in curbing the activities of Boko Haram.

But Azazi told some select media that while some residents might not be comfortable with the presence of the troops, their removal was not a solution to the problem in the state or in any part of Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted Azazi as saying: “The soldiers are barely one month old in Borno. Soldiers deployed in any part of Nigeria must behave responsibly at all times.

“Unfortunately when you are the target of a bomb attack, there is the possibility that you react in a manner not approved by the people.

“There is need for cooperation from all sides; the military, the people and everybody. Terrorism is a new phenomenon in Nigeria. It is a new threat and there are new initiatives to deal with the situation.

“The security issues in the country today are keeping the security agencies on their toes, but they need the cooperation of all Nigerians to put an end to the crises.''

The NSA said his office was already putting in place new measures to address the security challenges in the country.

In the same vein, in apparent response to the growing state of insecurity in the state, the Director |General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig General Maharazu Tsiga, has ordered the relocation of corps members from the state.

The NYSC DG, who addressed corps members at the orientation camp in Maiduguri Wednesday, said as a father he could not watch the lives of his children, the corps members, being put in danger without acting.

He told them that since the security situation in Borno State was getting worse, he had no choice other than relocating those that were interested out of the state.

He also told them that from the camps, they would not be allowed to go into the streets of the state, adding that he would even make buses available to convey them out of the state right from the camp.

According to him, they would not be sent to their home states but to another state so that the spirit behind the scheme would not be defeated, adding that the relocation order applied to every corps member in the state willing to relocate and not only those currently at the camp.

Panic travelling from Maiduguri has resulted in the death of five persons in a ghastly motor accident involving two commercial cars - an Opel and a Volkswagen Gulf - in Damaturu Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the two vehicles were conveying fleeing residents of Maiduguri probably to Jos before the accident.

The two vehicles had 13 occupants, according to one of the eyewitnesses, who revealed that the rear vehicle lost control and rammed into the car in the front leading to the death of the five persons with the other eight sustaining serious injuries.

But the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Assistant Zonal Coordinator in-charge of the North-east, Ibrahim Farinloye, has warned people to stem the tide of panic travels.

He warned: “We should be cautious while taking decisions; we are running away from smaller danger and we should avoid getting ourselves into greater dangers that we can successfully manage.”

NYSC redeploys corps members as attack heightens in Borno

By Ifedayo Adebayo

print email

The national secretariat of National Youth Service Corps announced on Wednesday that it was planning massive redeployment of corps members serving in Borno State as a result of the current security challenges in the area.

The NYSC director general, Maharazu Tsiga, made the announcement in Maiduguri while briefing reporters on the latest development in the state, stating that "the NYSC will not hesitate to relocate corps members from states where there is no security for them.

"Borno is not an exception. We have decided to relocate all those in the camp and others already serving from the state," Mr Tsiga said.

He said that the relocation would be limited to those willing to leave the state, but "those who wish to stay behind will not be affected by the relocation, because we do not want a repeat of what happened in Bauchi last year, where massive relocation led to protest. Married women, nursing mothers and those who are sick will also be left out if they wish."

However, claiming that no corps member would be relocated to his state of origin in the exercise, Mr Tsiga said the practice was against the NYSC code and "we are going to decide which part of the country to relocate the corps members, because no member will be allowed to serve in his state of origin."

The NYSC boss denounced a media report indicating that there was a bomb blast at the Borno NYSC Camp on Tuesday, saying it was untrue.

"The story indicating that three corps members died after an explosion in the camp is not only untrue, but unfortunate. Media men should strive hard to make peace and not try to create problems," he said.

He also expressed shock over some text messages indicating that the NYSC camp in Jigawa was on fire.

Meanwhile, in another attack, suspected members of the Boko Haram sect on Wednesday detonated a bomb outside the residence of late Borno state former governor, Mala Kachalla. Military spokesperson, Victor Ebhaleme ,said that the blast did not hurt anyone.

Mr Kachalla died in 2007, but his family still resides at his house in Maiduguri.

Prior to the recent attack, Boko Haram struck in the Borno state capital on Tuesday evening, killing three people riding in a van close to a military checkpoint.

Commander of the Joint Military Taskforce, Jack Nwachukwu Nwaogbo, a major general, said an explosive went off under the van as its driver slowed down at a military and police checkpoint in the metropolis. The blast killed the driver and two passengers.

The University of Maiduguri yesterday announced that it was shutting down indefinitely over threat letters it received purportedly from the group.

University spokesperson, Ahmed Mohammed, said that the institution could no longer guarantee the safety of its students and that the university would not be held responsible should anything happen to any student.

In a June 12 handbill attributed to Boko Haram, the group asked for the prosecution of some former governors, which it blamed for the 2009 death of its leader. The source of the leaflet could not be ascertained.

Meanwhile, committee of Borno elders and leaders of thought have called on President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the withdrawal of all soldiers deployed to the streets of Maiduguri, arguing that the soldiers have failed to address the security situation perpetrated by the Islamic sect; but instead have only succeeded in burning down houses and cars, killing innocent people and harassing passers-by since their deployment to the state.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday fixed July 19 for taking the plea of five police officers accused of unlawfully killing the late leader of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Yusuf.

Those charged to undergo the trial are J.B. Abang, Akeera, and Madu Buba, all assistant commissioners of police; Mohammed Ahmadu, a chief superintendent of police, and Adamu Gado, a sergeant.
