Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has threatened to go on strike, if the Federal Government implements some aspects of the Needs Assessment report recommending the reduction of non-teaching staff. It said the rot in the universities was not caused by non-teaching staff. At a workshop to sensitise its members at the University of Benin on the Needs Assessment, National Vice President of SSANU Alfred Jimoh accused the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of collaborating with the Federal Government to sack them. Jimoh described the affected versions as " demonic verses laced with some poisonous and odious recommendations." He said the section was antagonistic and unacceptable. Jimoh spoke at 47th quarterly zonal executive council meeting (ZEC), western zones of SSANU. National Public Relations Officer Nad Aboribo said they were sensitising and enlightening their members on the contents of the Needs Assessment. Comrade Nad said they were crying out before the Federal Government implements the report. Source... http://m.naij.com/news/54764.html |

Dear nlanders, what's your take after seeing Manchester united suffer a well humble defeat from Everton fc...Are they still worthy and to be seen as a threat to the EPL title? |
Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90- minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes. But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. DEPRESSION: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. ANEMIA: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia. BLOOD PRESSURE: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. BRAIN POWER: 200 students at a Twickenham school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. CONSTIPATION: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. HANGOVERS: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. HEARTBURN: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. MORNING SICKNESS: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. MOSQUITO BITES: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. NERVES: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. ULCERS: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over- chroniclercases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. TEMPERATURE CONTROL: Many other cultures see bananas as a ‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has FOUR TIMES the protein, TWICE the carbohydrate, THREE TIMES the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well- known phrase so that we say, ‘A BANANA a day keeps the doctor away. |

A sex attacker who failed in the knifepoint rape of a woman because of his drunken impotence apologised to her and said 'it's my first time'. Sudan-born Khalid Abdullah cornered a stranger in an alley and held a blade to her neck in a jealousy fuelled assault, sparked by seeing his own girlfriend with another man. photo The victim had been walking to work at 5:30am when Abdullah launched the terrifying attack in April this year. He told the woman, in her 30s, that he 'needed sex' before putting his hand over her mouth and telling her to keep quiet. But Abdullah, 35, was unable to carry out the rape and told her: 'It's my first time, I'm sorry.' He offered the terrified woman his phone and said: 'Call the police, you can call the police, call the police now.' The woman fled but Abdullah caught her and told her he 'wanted to kill all women' after catching his girlfriend being unfaithful. She managed to reach her home in Peterborough, and raised the alarm. Abdullah was later identified through CCTV. He was convicted of attempted rape after a week-long trial at Peterborough Crown Court. Judge Nic Madge jailed him for eight years and described the attack as 'every woman's worst nightmare'. He told him: 'Whether due to the amount you had drunk or for some other reason, you were not successful in having sexual intercourse, clearly that was your intention. 'You did not succeed in penetrating her and she did not suffer any physical injuries, but this was an absolutely terrifying experience. 'It was every woman's worst nightmare. The victim was terrified because of your anger and unpredictability.' Detective Constable Louise Spinks said: 'Abdullah is clearly a dangerous individual and we are pleased he is now behind bars for a significant period of time.'

University lecturers yesterday replied to Senate President David Mark's comments on the 2009 agreement, which they are asking the Federal Government to implement. Mark had said that the government officials who signed the agreement "did not know their right from their left" and that the ASUU officials who negotiated exploited their ignorance. The National treasurer of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Demola Aremu said President Goodluck Jonathan was among those who signed the agreement 2009. According to Aremu, it took ASUU and the Federal Government team, led by Mr Gamaliel Onosode, three years to arrive at the agreement, so the team knew what they were going into, adding that it is pretentious for any top government functionary to claim that the government negotiating team did not understand fully what they signed with the teachers. He said ASUU went to the negotiation with a 300-page charter, which was reduced to a 60- page agreement after the union shifted so much ground on many of its demands and Jonathan, who was then the Vice President, asked the government to sign the agreement after thoroughly going through it for six months. Aremu explained that the Federal Government also came up with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the implementation of the agreement in January last year. He asked: "So, if anyone assumes that they didn't know what they were doing in 2009, did they also not know what they were doing in 2012?" The union therefore called on the lawmakers and Nigerians to beg the President to implement the agreement as begging will not end the crisis. "Begging will not bring any solution. Nigerians should rather beg government to face this agreement squarely and implement it. That is where our future lies," Aremu said, adding that senators could also cut their allowances and contribute them to education for the benefit of all citizens. Also speaking on the issue, the chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, Mark's statement that ASUU will lose public sympathy, if it does not call off its strike, as "a careless talk" because, according to him, the Senate has already lost its credibility among Nigerians over its huge allowances and its perpetual anti-masses stance as opposed to the progressives in the House of Representatives. He also lashed out at the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, Prof. Sola Adeyeye, over his comments on why a professor will demand payment to supervise postgraduate students, saying people, such as Adeyeye, ought to keep quiet when education is being discussed as "his immediate family members are not in Nigeria with all his children schooling and living abroad, using the millions of public funds being earned by their father in Nigeria to live large abroad. |

Seriously I support his move on dissolving the cabinets. Plans has been made to remove our Christian governor in the north and the speaker of the state house of assembly has been saying trash cos he has been bought. Wish you quick recovery sir. |
Reports reaching us from Jalingo say that the Taraba state governor, Danbaba Suntai has dissolved the state executive council. All special advisers also have been seen off the premises; special assistants' positions, however, remain intact. Also, Governor Suntai, whose actions now are heavily scrutinized by the general public and his fellow politicians, has endorsed the appointments of Mr. Timothy Katap as the new Secretary to State Government (SSG), and Mallam Aminu Jika as the new Chief of Staff. This is the second time that Mr. Jika is being appointed as the Chief of Staff to Mr. Suntai. He was first appointed when Mr. Suntai took office in 2007. All commissioners have been directed to hand over to their respective permanent secretaries while the special advisers are to hand over to the Government House. |
