It's good to see ladies wanting to get their hands dirty. I like to call the ladies I've seen in the networking field "Women with some muscle".
Do well in your endeavors. All the best.

Hampy, before you point fingers at others, why don't you take a look at your very self?
Even your write-up is no different from his. Look at the bold and tell me how you expect to be better than this same guy. You come here and judge someone who probably has got no problem whatsoever achieving something you seem to desperately want. Do you expect him to write a post the same way he'd write his project ? Or maybe you expect him to correct every grammar and spell-check every sentence ? He is a Cameroonian. Your lecturers are Germans (that is if you're in Germany), non-native English speakers, and if you follow them on social networks, their posts would prove the same.

Your country's previous first lady (I need not add that she bags a Ph.D) wasn't what you'd call a very good user with the English language but yet, she sat on the most powerful seat a Nigerian woman could ever get close to. Well, you may have voted for the husband but it's a package.

You do not judge someone's fluency in a language just by the way they write. You judge them only after seeing the way their write-up is, hearing them speak, and their ability to read/understand situations in the language. If you're not familiar with language testing boards, this is the same way they operate. They evaluate you based on these tasks and then round your proficiency on it.
You could score a 6/7 band (which is what most Nigerians get in writing) and a 8.5 band in listening. Does that make you a bad user of the language ?

Hampy:
Your command of the English language is not that good. Don’t get me wrong, you probably write or even speak better than most of us, okay? But what I’m saying is - Your under graduate (it is undergraduate not under graduate) course (courses if you're talking subjects - otherwise, it is a degree) was taught in English, you wrote your project, publications and other papers in English, and you defended in English (don't be so sure, it's UP - he could have done the same in Afrikaans)……And you made a first class? With the way you speak (did you talk to him on the phone) and write English? That’s something really strange (how's it strange?)…..I’m sorry bro. I also have a funny feeling about this post. This is not to say that you’re fraudulent or anything. It just smells a little bit funny. Thanks for wanting to help….But I suppose everybody on here know(s) the drill……. Don’t pay for anything you cannot see, feel, or touch!(I don't think he mentioned anything about paying for "anything you cannot see, feel, or touch") See the accommodation with your korokoro eyes, find out about its genuinity before parting with your hard earned money.

Sorry bro I just have to get this off my chest. However, we can be very good friends. At least you’ll teach me how to make a first class. I’ve always dreamt about it, but never achieved it(Thank you for being honest). Its not too late - I want to make a distinction in my MA program, so I hope you’d be willing enough to show me a few tricks. I know UP. I wrote LSAT at Witwatersrand with a couple of bright lads from UP. It’s a cool Uni

You may want to leave me an email with your phone number- naturalkindness@yahoo.com

Good morning.

P.S: The edits I've made above is not to prove to you that I'm better at using the language than you are, in fact, you could be way better and I'd gladly live my life to the fullest knowing/not knowing that - it's just to let you know that; no matter what it is in life, you could be better than someone else at it, but, that doesn't mean you find every chance to stick that in their face. They already know it, you don't have to remind them. The same way you'd not want someone else do that to you.

Awesome.

VIRL is Cisco's own Emulating software. It's quite resourceful but there are very node limits. It's a bit pricy too smiley

Oh yes. From the CCNP part of view, you do not have to actually configure anything but for the professional/real world scenarios, you will. I basically do more than what the exam objectives are. That way you can know what happens when something breaks and what'll happen when you break something. I would recommend you do the same. The book doesn't say much for IPsec mGRE configurations which I find totally absurd but in real word at a professional level - you should be familiar with those concepts. I skipped MPLS though, for some weird reason I'm keeping it and IPv6 on hold till I'm done with route protocols.
NoriegaQ:

Yeah I noticed the switching issue with gns3 too. Even tried converting a 3600 series router to a switch using the no IP routing command, yet everything just seems upside down. You can't add new vlans from global configuration mode, only from privileged mode and the commands are just all weird. How does VIRL work?

I haven't broken anything yet, lol. Currently studying with the Cisco Press material and they keep saying the only practical config you should understand is building tunnels that span routers, every other thing (mGRE, NHRP, IPsec, DMVPN, MPLS VPN) is theoretical. It's my first read so I'm just following them, when I start the second read I'd definitely get more adventurous with my labbing. At this rate I think we might be writing around the same time.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 4:50pm On Nov 16, 2015
Ah, you'll need materials to study and you'll need to invest in it. You'll need data of course to read online. Buy books or sign up for courses at an Institute that specializes on Cisco certifications and then you can start off with videos and playing around with the technologies.

Ok, thanks 4 ur response OP, I tink I ve made up my mind to thread the netwok part. Bt pls I ll need ur guidelines and advice on how to go abt ds profession to become a network engineer.

How do I start as I dnt have any material?

You do well, my brother. This same fellow speaks English at almost the same level most of us Nigerians do. The fact that you do not realize that he speaks French, which gives him a upper hand in the same EU region, of at least 70% more chances of doing well in the community than most Nigerians that spent months learning the language but still find it hard to construct a meaningful sentence in German not to talk of integrating themselves in the society.

Come to think of it, his English isn't that bad. I've seen worse from fellow Nigerians on this same thread. Oh, perhaps, it's the first class he mentioned - *something many dream of but never achieve*. To the Cameroonian fellow Tchio2020, welcome to NL. Keep in mind you'll see this around often as people come in different shapes and sizes, choose to look the other way like acedboss just mentioned, and, contribute in anyway that you can.

@Tchio2020 P.S: NO!, you don't need to prove to anyone that you're a first class holder. You are not responsible for what they believe.
acedboss:
The way oga Eke404even posts and the kinda words he uses even after someone subtly or otherwise insults him and u expect him to get angry and lash out but he decides to do the exact opposite is very commendable! Kudos to u my guy. Most of u childish peeps on this forum need to learn from this guy... the maturity and calmness with which he addresses issues here is on another level altogether. God bless u man!

My Cameroonian brother, I know how u feel, kindly look the other way. And to the people taking shots @ him, y'all unfortunately dont get any 'cool points' for that. English is most likely not his first language, Cameroon is is predominantly francophone country.
Let's all learn to be nice to each other, focus more on the positive contribution we all are trying to make on this great forum and try as much as possible to ignore the flaws in others.

God bless bless all. Amen

Eke40seven:
We are proud of you bro! I wasnt taking jibes at you for being a Cameronian but rather insinuated that most Cameroonian are/were taught in French and just some parts of your country use English which means we have an upper hand.
The evidence is clear from your grammar, if you know what i mean (you would likely not). And the fact that you thought that i made reference to you being a fraud as a cameroonian cement my claims.. Make your comments short and simple so that @crowns2 no go think say you be Patience Jonathan doopleganger.
Bro no take am too serious, we all love our Cameroonian brothers (no homo), except in Football of course.
You may have quoted this brother wrong. If you followed through his statements, what he actually meant was Cameroon is Nigeria's small brother (petit frere) when it comes to Fraud and Corruption. As far as being honest, he stated the obvious - I just do not see a reason why he brought that up. I guess he was being defensive.
Travel / Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by DanIndia(m): 11:17am On Nov 16, 2015
What about the other threads where people agreed to assist each other and didn't get "screwed over"?
Tay16:
essence being you are better off paying a little more than having everything screwed over because you wanted to save $30.

I have read a few threads where people agreed to "assist each other " on NL all in a bid to save and they got screwed over and its not worth the stress!
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 11:15am On Nov 16, 2015
Good to hear that. I'm glad you've found this thread inspiring. The idea of putting up this thread was just something that happened out of the blue and the reception has been encouraging. There have been a couple of people on here that do show up once in a while to answer questions and make contributions.

I wasn't looking for IOS images actually. I just asked ahead for my SWITCH studies as the Study Material I had ordered just delivered and I hear that you can't fully emulate switches on GNS3. My best bet is to order VIRL. I'm currently studying for the ROUTE, just as you, and, I and a friend have been labbing on the topics. For materials, I use CBT Nuggets and the Official Cert Guide for CCNP ROUTE.
I can see you're done with GRE/DMVPN, how was it ? Did you break/fix anything ? Ran into any issues ? mGRE ? IPsec ? I finished that last week and currently on EIGRP. Hoping to finish it off in a couple days and then head on to OSPF... hopefully, I'll finish everything off and write the exam in a couple months.
NoriegaQ:

Thanks man, I really appreciate the gesture. It's nice when you come online and meet people who inspire you to follow your dreams. There were times when I was tired of the constant reading and labbing but coming on this platform I'd be inspired to get back to work. Only thing I can say is please don't stop doing this because many people are inspired through you and this thread. I'll always be available to help with inspiring others to networking greatness through this avenue and any others that come up.
I just finished with GRE and DMVPN on ROUTE last week, currently on IPV6. Which study materials do you use? I was able to get some Cisco Press books for ROUTE, SWITCH and TSHOOT from a friend. Someone recently told me about INE but I haven't tried that out. Read a post of yours a while back where you said you needed more IOS images for GNS3. After much searching and begging I finally got the link to about 10 images, lol. Would happily share with anybody who's interested.
I'll also try and speed up my reading so I can join you guys in the video classes ASAP. Thanks and keep up the good work man. Cheers!

True. I agree with this. It doesn't hurt to know more.
Fulaman198:

Well, in my opinion (again my opinion), the definition of network engineer duties and responsibilities varies from company to company. Some companies may request that they also need their network engineer to assess and analyse Packet flow and Packet loss. Some may need for you to troubleshoot where Packet loss is occurring. Some may need you to implement routing protocols such as EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, etc. Some may require you to work with IP address assignments.

Yes, network engineering is a vast field, however, going back to what you said I do somewhat agree that it's impossible to have a CCIE level of knowledge in Systems Administration (the equivalent would be RHCA (Red Hat Certified Architect)) and vast programming knowledge at a Senior Software Engineer level. No one is going to ask you to write a programme of 10,000 lines of code, but you may have to do both a combination of Sys Administration and Network Administration from time to time. A Systems engineer may be asked to block some ports and IP addresses on a server using IP tables. He/she would need some networking knowledge for that.

I guess what I'm saying is that in the computing world, I believe that it's good to be well-rounded to keep yourself competitive for prospective employees.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 5:23pm On Nov 14, 2015
Oh OK. I totally understand this is your opinion. It's just that when you see what's out there, when you see the depth of each course/objectivies, trust me, it's hard to be good at everything in IT. In fact, you can't. It's almost impossible to be good at networking and system administration and then programming! AhbA, Albert Einstein nor fit try am sef. In Networking alone, you can't even be good in all the tracks... not to talk of Programming which me nor really enjoy at all haha A friend of mine who went back to Nigeria too told me the same thing you just mentioned, being good in all of those things guarantee job security**. That's because in Nigeria, we still are a bit behind on technology with respect to specialty. A company hires a network engineer, expects him to fix their printer, manage their database, troubleshoot their scanner issues, pbx, phone systems, even electricity problem. Nor be small thing
Fulaman198:

You could be right, however, in my belief and my own personal experience, it's very good to be well-rounded and good at everything these days. Networking, System Administration, Programming and the automation of tasks. Being good in all of those things not only guarantees job security, but promotions as well.

I do not agree with the contact thingy in Germany but Tay16, understand that sometimes people just do not have enough.
Tay16:
if you struggling with shipping fees shouldnt that tell you to stick to what wont break your bank? im not insulting anyone but it sounds silly that a person who would to share shipping fees and if the documents go missing once they get to the "contact" you would have wasted application fees all in a bid to save shipping fees... does that make any sense?
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 4:27pm On Nov 14, 2015
It depends. I don't thank your plan is impossible but it's gonna take devotion and commitment from your side. Most people either go Networking and others programming. I haven't seen an expert in both world and that doesn't mean they do not exist. I think you should narrow down your plans and decide what would suit you best. A Network Engineer or a Web Designer

It's like that everywhere. Nor be today. This has been going on for decades. I still take pleasure in introducing myself as a Nigerian wherever and thank God, people do not judge me based on their experiences with or what they've heard about Nigerians.
Nigeria, just like every other country, has the good, and not so good. Our own can just fit too much sometimes. Visit other countries and you'll see Nigerians making the 1st page.
crowns2:

To tell you the truth I don't know but PM Scofield he will give you good ideas how to go about it.
I was on the open street infront of Afro Asian shop and I heard a Nigerian telling another one , oh boy you get coco? They were clustered there speaking our language. I was a ashamed for them. I didn't even act as if I am from the same place as them.
My dear friend was gisting with some Germans and they were telling him not to mix with his fellow country men from Nigeria. That they are known for selling drugs. That in Berlin there is a particular hard drug that only Nigerians have in their possession to sell.
And then when they visit Nigeria flaunting material things and we visit quietly because we make a honest living people will want to look down on us for not throwing money around. Its just so annoying.

That could be right, but if I were an HR and I find a Network Engineer also in possession of a RHCSE, I'd question the genuineness of it. People can dump anything, regardless of whether or not it is a multiple choice exam. System Administration is a role on itself just as Network Administration. If you talk to Network Engineers that have worked over the years maybe with HR or Recruitment agencies, they'll tell you it's hard for you to ene come up with a technician with indepth knowledge at their certification level just in networking not to talk of one that has a CCNA and RHCSA at the same time. I am not saying it's impossible, I'm just saying RHCSA/RHCE is going to far when you may not even use it at your job position. Major companies wouldn't hire a Network Engineer to carry out System Administration duties.
Fulaman198:

RHEL/CentOS are used the most by most industries, the advantage that the RHCSA has is that it's a hands on exam whilst the Linux+ is multiple choice. Thus, it's less likely to be the case that someone will find a way to cheat.

Having an RHCSA illustrates that you can do hands on system admin tasks. Whereas, you can't be certain if someone used dumps for their Linux+.

The only main difference between RHEL/Fedora/CentOS based Linux and say Debian based Linux like Ubuntu/Mint is the use of YUM and RPM over apt. There are still a vast amount of similarities that most RHCSA people can adapt to. However, most corporations servers are RHEL based instead of Ubuntu based or SUSE based. I don't think any major employer will assume that someone with an RHCSA only knows one flavour of Linux
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:46pm On Nov 10, 2015
Nothing good comes easy, my brother. I used the same book myself and I must be honest with you, that is a book you must have for CCNA plus a lot of labbings. baba11, I await your own CCNA Cisco ID
baba11:

Reading the book is not easy at the same time, it's time consuming.... the key is to understand it and do alot of labbing sad
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:44pm On Nov 10, 2015
I do not disagree with this idea but I recommend for a network engineer to just get along with the basics at LPIC-1 and further take it from there. RHCSA/RHCE is totally flavor dependent. The commands are different from other flavors. It would make no sense to be RHCSA certified and be hired by a company that runs a different flavor. Though it is highly in demand, you'd still get the same job with the Comptia Linux+, as a network engineer. System Administration itself is no easy studies. Adding that to what you already know may mess things up.
Fulaman198:

Congratulations! I hope that you make networking your career path.

In regards to Linux, I advise you go with the redhat certifications (RHCSA/RHCE). They are far more respected because they are hands-on exams. RHEL is practically the industry standard. Their exams are internationally respected and renowned.

Best of luck with your studies and endeavours.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:40pm On Nov 10, 2015
That's the same thing I meant. The Serial link connections are starting to get phased out though.
Fulaman198:

Connecting routers together can be done in various fashions. You can connect them via serial links or crossover Ethernet cable if you don't want to use serial links. If you choose to use serial, make sure to set the DCE specifications.

Connecting two PCs together also requires crossover Ethernet cable.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:38pm On Nov 10, 2015
You can't use Straight cabling for PC to PC and SWITCH to SWITCH, PC to ROUTER. Routers and PC are smart end devices and require cross cable for connections. You can only use straight-through for connecting a PC to a SWITCH and a SWITCH to a ROUTER. Try this on Packet Tracer.
ptoall1000:

If I don't have proof I won't say so. Right now I'm on a project in Kebbi state where I'm connecting switch to switch and pc to pc with straight cable.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:33pm On Nov 10, 2015
I totally agree with this. I once asked a Cisco Instructor, why do I need to know OS based operations since I'm a Network Engineer? HE replied "What does a network engineer do ?" I replied "Connect devices together". He further asked, "What do those devices run on"

I hope y'all got it. I wanted to seat for the LPIC-1 test but CCNP and College studies alongside other commitments is really kicking me so I'm putting it on hold. My SWITCH OCG should deliver tomorrow.
NoriegaQ:

I haven't decided which path I'd really like to follow. Maybe when I'm done with CCNP R & S I'll make up my mind. When you pass Comptia Linux you also get LPIC and SUSE as added certs for free. I think a good network engineer should not be limited to just "networking" but also server operation and config. A vast majority of companies in the world use Linux servers because the OS is quite secure, hence as a network engineer it's good to have a basic knowledge of servers. Intend to do MCSE too but that ll be later on.
Career / Re: Cisco STUDY GROUP (online) by DanIndia(m): 2:30pm On Nov 10, 2015
OH my. I love this. I could totally tell your passion for networking from reading this single post. And those people were right, the Linux path looks more promising. It's fun and it's not necessary you certify yourself but it does help. So from me to you, Congratulations. Now we could use you more on this thread, post questions, post tips, post employment opportunities... whatever you feel that may be of great help to others. ANd since you're already planning for CCNP, you could join me. As we speak, I'm about to move on to OSPF and the others. Down with IPv6, GRE, DMVPN... Let me know if you're up for it.

AND again, I like your confidence. Check out the bold. That inspires me myself. Coincidentally, I'm planning to write my CCNP route around the same time frame of yours. Only reply back if you're up for the challenge.

Again to others, you don't really need to dump an exam. If you practice a lot and did that well, trust me no questions on the exam would be strange to you.

Congratulations again, Bro. NoriegaQ. Please keep the fire burning.

NoriegaQ:
Hey guys. I passed my CCNA 200-120 exam with a score of 941 after 4 months of intensive self-study and labbing. I read Todd Lammle's book 3 times over and I labbed at least 3 hours on week days and 10 hours on weekends. I'm just happy my efforts came through. The guy at the centre where I wrote told me I should go back and study more if I wasn't sure I was ready enough, as Cisco had changed most of the exam questions. I didn't practice with dumps so I was quite certain. At some point during the exam I actually felt so sure that I was going to fail because the simulations were quite tricky. In the end I came through, I was the 3rd person to pass this week at the centre were I wrote out of 14 exam takers.
Special thanks to the OP @DanIndia because this thread was one of the things that inspired me to success. Talking and learning from you guys really helped. With hardwork and humility, you'd definitely succeed. I feel now I'm certified I can contribute more to this thread as someone who now has a Cisco ID, lol. I've started CCNP studying since last month, even though I wasn't CCNA certified yet, I intend to write that in February or March next year. I was also gonna do MCSE this year but so many people I know in the industry have advised me to take the Linux path first. I'm considering Comptia Linux. Anyways guys, once again I appreciate this thread much more than I can describe. If you love networking like I do, you'd understand if I call this thread my home on Nairaland. Good luck everybody! Well, I do not really do admissions at the moment but I can have someone do it for you. And you cant use your OND for admission. Your WAEC should be good but then you need to have at least 5 good credits. Not C6. I believe the minimum is C4 or C5 now. Admission doesn't take long. A few weeks or so.

Guarantee ? Who gives a guarantee for a UNI admission ? Only the UNI can tell you whether or not you'll be admitted. I can't.

Please let me know so that I can start working towards admission for the new year.......
