Good morning house, this message is directed to all the 'egbons' 'bros' on this platform.

This page has been really helpful and has kept a lot of us on track, from preparation to application, and other stuff, but we need some things clearly defined, explained or highlighted If it's with a 4 or 5 paragraph post.

1. How to search for schools, danjaninja said he would post this, I have been waiting on it and I'm still waiting.
2. How to know how affordable enrolling in a school is and how to estimate their assistance or scholarship
3. Difference between in-state tuition and out-state tuition and how they apply.
4. A chronological guide from the Gre and TOEFL e.g (gre-application-mailing-transcript) and a guide on statement of purpose / intent.
5. The estimated amount one should sought for after getting admitted to a school and general finance bants.

You guys should leave men hanging after taking the gre.

Thanks cc danjaninja, sirRiddy ati be be lo

Yes, i did say i was going to make a post but i had a life threatening situation. Thank God I am okay now. I am working on the post as we speak. I sincerely apologize for the delays.

Good afternoon house,

I am very grateful to you all for your advice and assistance from page 1 to this very page 85. It is an honor sharing this platform with SirRiddy, DanjaNinja, pennstate, and every other person contributing to the advancement of this group. I'll admit i'm a secret disciple of this group since last year and the reasons are not far-fetched: One, because i was an undergraduate but by the grace of God my convocation ceremony is on June 4, 2016. Two, i am not financially buoyant to register for GRE though i have downloaded the necessary materials and i've been practicing but not as intense compared to that of someone who has fully paid.

Now, i am at crossroads as i don't know which schools to apply to but I wish to study in either USA or Canada.

My profile:

CGPA: 3.81/4.00
Course of study: Statistics

I intend to pursue a PhD program in Statistics (exempting MSc)
(Hope I'm not asking for too much)

I'm hoping for valuable responses.. Thanks

What do you need to know?

Hey guys!

Can someone kindly give me a breakdown of the cost for GRE?

I'd like to take it in September.

Does taking classes make sense and where are the good tutorial centers?

Please help.

cost of GRE: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/about/fees
About $205.

It depends on how you learn. Generally though, you dont need physical classes. Grab the test prep books, study them, do practise tests and you should be good to go.

Do you know that?
1. The River Niger Bridge at Onitsha was constructed between 1964 and 1965 by Dumez- a French construction company and cost £5 million.

Can you imagine? Over 60years ago, It took just one year to construct the iconic Onitsha - Asaba bridge!!!! East-West road, how far?

2. Patience Jonathan is one of Nigeria’s most-educated First Ladies, with an NCE, a B.Ed, and a PhD from University of Port-Harcourt.

How come we never heard of this?

Thanks everyone in the room. Please would like to know if using an admission consultancy firm will be helpful. Been in contact with examplanet agency, anyone heard of them? Pls I need ur advice and suggestions. Also for those taking the GRE, please download the following apps from appstore,they really helped me a lot ;
1)Magoosh vocabulary builder
2)Magoosh gre flashcards
3)Magoosh gmat flashcards.
Also strenghten your passage reading skills by reading articles from nytimes and aldaily.com. Lastly, manhattan gre practice questions - finish that material at least once bfor u attempt to attempt the exam. It will sharpen ur cognition. Dts my little contribution. NB ;PLS I NEED TOEFL MATERIALS.

Did you already take the GRE? If yes, please share your experience so others can learn from you. As for the Toefl matterials, send me your facebook email address and i would add you to a Toefl group on facebook. You would find all the materials you need there.

Admission Consultancy
Personally, i am not fond of admission consultants because i had a terrible experience with one. Most consultants, i say "most", dont actually care about you. They care about one thing - Profits. You might not know this but most consultants have profit sharing deals with certain universities. They get a cut for every student they send to a particular university. Meaning when you approach a consultant, they would most likely recommend a school that is not in your best interest. In my situation, the agent made it seem like i could only get admitted to 3 universities. This would have not been a bad idea if those schools offered my major and area of concentration. She tried to influence me to change my intended major cos according to her, those were my only options. This is simply "NOT TRUE" as there are thousands of schools in the US and if you search diligently, you would find a school that fits your requirements. You can do this. I did it. SirRiddy did it. And many more persons too numerous to mention did it as well.

In essence, if you must use a consultant and can afford it, be clear about your requirements and accept nothing less. But if you are like me - curious, money conscious and just loves doing things on your own, roll up your sleeves and find a school on your own. Its not that difficult and as an added advantage, you would learn and understand how the american education system works. To help you, I would post a school search guide before the end of the week.

Good day to you all and thanks for the good work you've all been doing. Just want to add my one cent, for those currently preparing for TOEFL and/or GRE verbal, there's an android app that will help you increase your vocabulary, it's better than making a flash card, the name of the app is 'memrise'. It's quite useful, I'll post some of the screen shots here.
Wish me success as I'm writing toefl on Saturday 21st May.

I've been an ardent follower of this thread. I must give it up for danjaninja, sirriddy et al for their altruistic demeanor at solving gre related problems in the thread. Goodwork y'all.

I have strong intentions of registering for gre but I have two discouragements that has made me complacent In making preparations. Firstly, relative to cgpa requirements of most universities, mine is not strong enough (3.05/5.00). Secondly, I have little working experience that is related to what I want to study in my masters.

Is there something I can do about the situation? Please I am anticipating helpful inputs from you all. Thanks

These are not issues. My GPA was lower. I had a 2.89 and i still got admitted. Major, i switched as well. My undergrad was in Electrical Engineering and now? Am doing a Masters in Computer Science. I wont lie to you, changing majors is challenging - You have to start from scratch, even worse alot of classes assume you have some prerequisite knowledge which you don't have. I kid you not, you would seem like the dumbest person in a lot of classes but if you persevere, study smart and do academic work, you will be fine.

In summary, your GPA and major should not deter you. Do a good job on the GRE, make at least a 310 combine that with good statement of purpose and you should be good. One last thing though: be smart about the schools you apply to. Apply to a mix of average schools and schools that would beg you to attend. The beauty of America is that for every academic percentile, there is a school for you.

This by SirRiddy comes in handy as well:

Hi guys.
If you planning for fall 2017, please start searching now.
No amount of searching is too much. Use usnews to check for program ranking.
Go to gradcafe and see what past applicants went through while applying and learn from their mistakes.
Go through all the school websites, mail professors, mail grad students, mail grad coordiantors.
Be reasonable with your choices. Spread your risks. Top schools, moderate schools, even 'unranked' schools.
Study hard for the GRE.
For engineering guys, anything below 160 in quant is unacceptable.
Do not rush your applications. Make your SOP as good as possible. Send to people to help read
through and edit them. Your resume must convey your skills well. Your linkedin account is very
important. I was shocked when a grad coordinator viewed my linkedin account.
No matter your financial stand, aim for funding. Do not underestimate yourself.
Wish everyone good luck.

Hi MsNas, thank you for making this insightful post - https://www.nairaland.com/2557843/general-u.s.a-student-visa-enquiries-part/303#44232315

Please dont mind my ignorance but I must admit this section caught my attention:

I never knew one could have a full time job(not internship), be a full time F-1 student, hold a full time graduate assistantship and not even be in the same state your school is located. I am doing that right now and I wouldn't be able to do that if I had not sought advice from people who knew better than me and could offer concrete advises on the way to go.

Can you please provide more information on how to -
1. Do an internship as a full time F-1 student - is this CPT?
2. Hold a full time GA and not even be in the same state your school is - how is this possible? Does it involve taking online classes instead of on campus classes?

Sincerely awating your response.
Thanks.
