@Akin-Egba: You keep running from pillar to post. You can post 1000 articles if you like. We know that most of the media is based in the West and thus there is more coverage. In the East, most will admit even the reported crime is a tiny fraction of what actually occurs. Perhaps you should post per capita crime rates, as was initially requested. This might help to fill some of the holes in your porous arguments and reasoning. Finally, is your claim that because not all of the Igbos fleeing crime in the East fled to Lagos, this is somehow a good thing? Or evidence to support your point? Again, think through this a bit further and consider if this makes any sense. |
^-- Who can say. Perhaps the East sef has always been filled with violence; perhaps that is why they have been leaving it. I can only go by what the Igbo I know have told me. And they've said they feel safe in the West, but fear for their safety and lives in the East. I can only sympathize. |
Aren't the Berom numerous enough to fully drive out the Fulani and Hausa there? If so, what exactly is preventing them from doing this? Interference or partiality by the Nigerian military? An executive summary would be useful (though I guess I need to google and read up.) |
How on earth am I comparing myself to Igbos? I am only claiming that your analysis is flawed, as you did not compute per capita crime rates. I'm also suggesting that Yorubaland is probably a relatively safe place, since massive numbers of people from the East have fled their crime-filled land for the relative safety of the West. Akin-Egba:Do you know what the word "rate" means? Articles are irrelevant. Take the police data, divide by the listed population of the state to get a crime rate. Tabulate it and report it here, so we can compare. Otherwise your analysis is meaningless. |
^-- Then prepare for us per capita crime rates so we can compare. Your current analysis is flawed until this is done. |
Akin-Egba:Think very carefully about what you just wrote. Consider if there is a contradiction in the first and the second part of your statement. Actually the crime rate in Abia has gone down since the military clampdown.Evidence of this? Seems unfortunate that a largescale military presence was the only way to reduce crime there. It truly must have been a hellish land if it essentially required an army to pacify it. Let we Yorubas stop living in denial and making out as if the SW is one crime-free paradise.Me personally, I don't think the SW is a crime-free paradise. It is the Igbo who live in the Southwest are the ones who claim this to be true, at least relative to their homeland. Quite unfortunate, being driven away from your homeland like refugees due to crime and chaos. |
Err, shouldn't you instead consider per capita crime rates? Lagos has a lot more population than say the Eastern states; that crime rates there are anywhere near comparable to Abia and Anambra reflects poorly on the latter two states. Also, newspaper reports are probably not going to tell the whole story, since it is highly likely that crime is severely underreported in the East. Consider for example how even Igbo people are afraid to live in their homeland due to fear of kidnapping and crime. That alone should tell you about how safe the region is relative to others in Nigeria. |
Eh, nice words, but let's not overreact now. |
Interesting. |
Lol. Sambo is crazy! At least no one can accuse him of lack of ambition ![]() |
Why do you have:
rather than just
? Same with '='. |
The Wikipedia article in this case should be more than enough for you to figure it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sieve_of_Eratosthenes |
Yoruba Al-Qaeda? WTF is wrong with this m.o.ron? |
Maybe sometime this weekend I'll be able to look at the report and fully digest it. I'll suspend judgement until then. But my gut instinct is to dislike this policy of GEJ. |
1. Power supply 2. Better roads 3. Economic development, less dependence on oil revenues 4. Less powerful presidency and federal gov't, more powerful states 5. Good government in every state, less greedy politicians This is my wishlist. Not sure how much of it will happen, if anything. But yeah, it is depressing sometimes seeing the disparity between the development levels of other countries and that of Nigeria ![]() |
Fashola, if we could ignore tribalism, sentiment, etc and focus on performance and credibility. |
violent:This seems to be false: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/1990/mar/29/did-noriega-declare-war/ |
As someone who (foolishly) contributed to derailing the thread, how about we all stop? Anyway, RIP Bawo. Reminds me too much of myself, a nerd, engineer, and a sports addict ![]() |
This is an internet forum, minor spelling/grammatical errors hopefully shouldn't be assumed to be evidence of illiteracy. But back on topic, eko o ni baje! ![]() |
davidylan:This is what I don't even understand about the story. What on earth could they possibly want? They didn't rob him, right? I could understand if they robbed him of property, then there is at least a motive. But shot in front of his home? Why? There is no way he knew those guys personally, or was mixed up with them in any way. Dude spent most of his time here on nairaland, if his posts and the comments by his father and family are any indication ![]() It just feels extremely unjust to me. They gained absolutely NOTHING from killing him. I mean, WTF dude? I don't get it. |
dayokanu:Yep. AAs who live in white neighborhoods are fine, and so are the rich AA neighborhoods say in PG County, Maryland (though even those kids are knuckleheads, to be honest.) But living among poor black people is a very bad idea. I'd much rather live among poor white people or poor hispanics than poor blacks. Poor black people don't want to make their lives better, instead they want to make yours worse. For Nigerians who live in the US, don't make the mistake of living in any of these poor black neighborhoods. Your life, peace of mind and property are worth more than the money you save in rent. |
You are a better man than me. I have zero interest in women who already have kids. |
I don't know why dumb african americans are always doing monkey sh1t like this. I hope the guys who did this are found and very painfully executed. This is why nobody sane wants to live around AAs. Always into dumb sh1t. |
Would even the most patriotic Nigerian abroad be willing to leave their high-paying job in field X to be a mechanic or pure water seller if this is what Nigeria somehow wanted them to do? I don't think so. I don't mind earning less money to serve in Nigeria (well, depending on how of a paycut), but I'd like to do what I was trained to do. |
That vid is 1.5 hours long. Can someone provide a summary? Or at least hit the key points? |
babapupa:In some sense, democracy is even better for us than regionalism of old. Certain places like Kwara which could not be brought into the fold due to belonging in the wrong region can be brought into the fold through political means. Anyway, I love the ACN. |
Very sad ![]() |
Beaf:No offense meant, I was just inferring from the article and trying to look at it from the Igbo perspective. The article pretty much says this exactly, btw: The South-South idea was, therefore, a deliberate gambit hatched by the Igbo intelligentsia to give the Southern minorities their own turf in order to reduce the national gang-up against the Igbo. With their own home zone, they would be able to project their own interests rather than being the cat’s paw of Igbo rivals from the North or West. |
Pretty interesting. I guess a good idea. If you have a 5th column in your midst, then it makes sense to see it moved out, rather than letting it undermine you from within. |
