mevisbleek:I would like to apologise sincerely for my earlier response to you. It was a bit to full on and i literally was screaming at you . I do apologise I just didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea or misinterprete the LagosNIV comment. I think He said more of over prepared and not dont prepare . The world is so competitive now that it is VITAL that in everything our people do they need to put in the effort- visa o, job ooo , all aspect of life ,do detailed research on how to get it and prepare well . There so much to learn and grow even in little things like other transcripts , experiences , failures or success We need to promote the culture of been well prepared for anything you apply for , however little especially something that could enhance you.. It makes a world of difference when you are ready and makes you more competitive . I agree be honest in your story and journey .... |
Walspring:Just to add someone ABROAD not just USA .... UK, Canada |
mevisbleek:I salute you back Every body Journey is different ...... Some students are sound from beginning and some need help in order to navigate some of these answers. Even for MBA in the US you have books on MBA interviews and answer and people buy to help them . These are people that even after gaining admission to top Ivy league still need help . No be them fill their MBA application and in most top schools did interview to get in .. Its a normal process in life . To answer you question, my first F1 i was 18 years do you HONESTLY think i would have known all those answers at 18 years without any help ..... |
mevisbleek:To each his/her own ......I do not agree with this statement at all . Over preparation yes dont over do it or it makes you more nervous but to say Preparation is not needed , PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHAT ADVICE YOU TAKE ...lol I am not saying Copy others and have always said be truthful but as in every interview its good to prepare. Have an idea of past questions and learn from it . For example most people would not view the curriculum of their courses , but noting that is it a commonly asked question that would help in your visa preparation. Be truthful Yes , be well prepared to know in details what you are applying for and why you should be given Yes. FOCUS ON THE EXACT QUESTION ASKED AND ANSWER WELL. When you are informed of a process then you are better prepared in any areas of LIFE but to say no prepare, no read transcript .... ABEG even OYIBO prepare for interviews so PLEASE STOP IT (mevisbleek) . JUST STOP .lol |
LagosNIV:hahahahah i knew your eyes are everywhere ...... However our educational system is different , we learn in Nigeria mostly the academic side and not the whole package of how express yourself or to sell ourselves and put that in words . It doesn't mean the applicant would not excel if given the chance , Some are just not taught or exposed yet on some other basic skills apart from academic . Hopefully we put them straight on Nairaland and build each other up |
lionlee216:Replied ... |
lionlee216:Probably wont post it here, Incase a VO is lurking around ........... Send me a mail and i would send you tips on that question and you build it from there. Make it short so its something you remember but equally powerful |
lionlee216:I personally dont think its the Switch that was just the problem ......It has to do with how you first started, and then the next response wasn’t better and neither was the next ... At that point it was hard to bounce back. Firstly why the school is your best time to shine…….Get it right especially the first question. words like Random searches not a good choice of words , then good faculty ratio ....Almost all schools have that . I think new applicants stop using reasons like that. Also “Tech management” the focus would not be so much on research or Laboratories but that was one of your reasons... There are much indept answers to have given regarding Tech management. Then on to the next …..No GRE then next a different undergrad. To be honest there was no selling point you shined in. …… I would always recommend doing GRE as a MUST !!! and IF YOU DON’T have it , defend it QUICKLY ……. For example if it was me I would have said I did IELTS and xx was my score (if it was high) and then add I planned to do GRE but it was not requirement for this school and the other schools I applied to . I was evaluated on my other body of work such as GPA, SOP, MY GOOD LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION … Until the VO say this person too talk ...enough then cuts me off . ...Although you tread carefully blc next question could have been what was ur GPA . and it better be high the way i have packaged myself or i have shot myself . |
KimoraW:There are very many naija doctors who have done MPH In Emory. Although the ones i know are past not current ....Send me a msg and i would link you up , let me send one a facebook msg that i might be sending someone down his way . |
Jaypoundsgmail:Yes you can PM ...... I agree be on the safe side , especially since you state you have funding for the first year . You actually need to show funds for the whole program length and extra not just first year if you want to go down self sponsor because VO fit ask so what will happen after first year.. Also i think even to release your i20 normally you should show funding for more than just one year |
sputos:The thing with interviews is that it can be so random ... You can walk in tomorrow and speak with the same person but get entirely different questions. Also another VO would have been fine with self sponsor , not in all cases is it a red flag (although might not be an issue but i never recommend it , that just me) ...... Nigeria is hard economically so without your inheritance how u won take self sponsor and the interview is too short that no VO going ask you about your life history of acquisitions. ....Anyway good you learnt from it and will correct that .......moving right along Go through pass transcript and this time take time to build in dept answers , write like 20 questions frequently asked . Especially if you are doing MBA , MBA usually is competitive in the Job market so they would expect indept answers .. Your main problem i think was you might have had confident but didnt sell yourself well . |
dprinz99:Caltech is very competitive to enter but if you do enter then you cant go wrong ...... As long as you face the right channel when you are in Caltech such as oncampus recruiting and things like NSBE Germany is not bad in engineering (although integrating culturally is a different topic) but the JOb market you have to be sound and know your onions to get a good job because u will be competing with lots of people who know their A and B . Also If Germany from Day one put a lot of effort in learning the Local Language (would be key when looking for full time job) |
gunther6:My cousin was recently looking for a roommate to share an apartment and it was based on someone transcript posted 2 weeks ago that i linked both of them up . They might not end up sharing a flat but u never know the network that is built from here ....When the new student gets to the school , at least he has my cousin to link up with and show him some steps . Also I know several previous Emory MPH naija students and who ended up matching for residency after MPH . That network base is something Anybody can tap into if they want by Holler Does anyone know such and such in Emory or In any school. ...... The power of using your Networks is key .....A lot of jobs is about networking and you only know whats out there by sharing , go see how the Indian they help each other enter places. I am done with this topic . My f1 Journey was years ago as undergrad and masters. I only viewed this thread this year for a cousin . Where i am today has partly due to networks. |
dprinz99:I dont know much about aerospace but if it engineering make sure you are part of NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) from beginning . Find out when they have their annual conference and book your ticket even if it is not popular in your school. Have your Resume ready and prepare well for interviews . Make sure you tap into that network during the conference by selling urself well and pass your Resume to everybody . ... Start with aiming for internship in NSBE conference to get your foot in **Next one is in Kansas City, MO in April 2017 ..... If you are doing Engineering , book your ticket now , lol . |
PrettyBoyFloyd:Thanks for sharinvg your journey. ..... i am amaze how some feel so arrogant after the F1 visa and think yeah i gained a lot but for whatever reason i am not sharing... ok na shebi u dont need support down d line, u never see real life. Please have several seats again... F1 IS NOT BIG DEAL, do u know how many f1 are given each year. It just the beginning . ..... |
sputos:Sorry to read this .... some feedback Yes it okay to sponsor yourself if u can show evidence but i would NEVER EVER recommend it..... The VO knows the cost of doing MBA is most schools is a lot and they know the average earning of most applicants coming for visa so to actually sponsor the whole cost is almost impossible for most applicants. .. they live in Nigeria and see the suffering and hustle....while it is possible how many people can actually pay full 2 years with housing . thats a red flag . Most MBA are expensive Then to say u come back to same job. ...hummm MBA is suppose to be used for career progession. If it to continue then why spend all that money. I would have recommended a much better answer of how with those acquired managerial and leadership skills u do such and such ..even if its within d same company but if u say u aim to apply for a more senior position within same company would have been better...or how most of the key executives in the company have Mba and u see the impact they played in building the company and u aim to be like that. Thridly most schools have the exact curriculum. It best to state it for word and not give generic courses ... All the best if u apply again . |
amii131: don4ye:@Don4ye is so right....i had a friend with this issue. She read so hard for GMAT and TOEFL and had a paragraph in her SOP how she fell but learnt from it and picked herself up...... it was then not an issue at all especially if u can get good test scores . She did MBA is a good program in d states like 4 yrs ago and is currently working on h1b visa.. |
daaz001:It has to be reflected on their system or else they will say he has not paid printed confirmation or not..... |
daaz001:It would be too close, it can take 1 -3 business day to clear and be reflected. I would say let there be at least 3 to 4 days in between payment and interview . |
Jaypoundsgmail:Well ....i would say preferably get a sponsor and also put that u will be part self sponsored. It rarely that u are asked for bank statement and all u mainly asked is who sponsoring u and what does the person do. Although u are also required to put their details on d ds160 form. It just carries more weight if u have a sponsor plus urself. That is not to say u cannot get f1 visa been self sponsored . U can.... however if it was me i would prefer to list a sponsor in addition. I cant really explain why sha At the end of the day either way self or with sponsor it doesn't matter , it boils down to favor sha from God...... |
jaysayboss:Nobody can predict this one for u.....the fact that it was not an issue for somebody doesnt mean that how it is . Even people with test or scholarship still get refused . However to be on a more safer size. Take the test as u appear more serious . |
CProf:How u getting along with everything. ...send me a pm |
Pasadena009:I am impressived that almost 9 years later you still remember this word for word. You really are like Einstein ![]() |
KimoraW:Hehehe go read my response that time..Told ya. U can never predict. All the best . Emory is a good school (i know several alumni ) allthough u have to plan how u balance that with USMLE so u match ..i |
KimoraW:Such great news...congrats and all the best . I remember d first time I am waiting to hear abt the sponsor issue of last time . Did u change sponsor or did u get a letter from the bank or was it not even mentioned at all Details is only extra for aproko gbeborun ears like mine. U got it this time THE REST THEY SAY IS HISTORY |
Pelaiye2703:It very competitive out there so i feel you, even those with BSC still get rejection . Its not easy but dont be discourage ....... Maybe you can apply for a PGD program(outside of the US) first before a masters. Or target one of those countries that have free tuition like Germany or Nordic and do a PGD first ....... UK do accept HND but UK so expensive and you wont gain anything back in what you put it, so UK for now is not worth it. Maybe their immigration policy will change if they leave EU . Make we dey see . Also have you had WES evaluate your transcript , because if WES grades it as BSC equivalent then you can go back to this email and ask to review your case based on WES evaluation. However that is speculation on my part that WES will equate BSC and HND as equal . I dont know for sure but explore that option Best of luck........never give up if you want something . If there is life there is a way . ....... |
purplesummer:I paid from the UK so was given a UK bank details and a pound amount to pay for a US school. . i actually didn't check if it was a good rate (pounds to dollars) but now that you mention i actually should have so i am not sure how Flywire works with Nigeria and then form A impact . What you need to check is the account details given ... IS it a Nigerian Bank details ?, dorm account or normal account if yes then they should tell you what exchange rate they will use ?, how much in naira that would be ? , so you know if its favorable exchange rate or not . ..... Or are you expected to change it in dollars first at black market and then pay it into FLYwire . Those questions you need to find out If there is embargo then i wonder how Flywire pulls the money out if Airlines are having trouble pulling the money out |
pgiddy:This topic has come up before ,,,,,,, Getting a Visa it is fine now (u still have up to 6 months) , it is flying that might be an issue , at MOST point of entry you would be refused if you have 6 months or less on your passport . You can get a renewal in Nigeria from 6 months to the expiration of your passport so work 6months back from January is July so from July you can get a new passport It wont stop u from getting a visa now (blc u still have up to 6 months) ...... but u need a new passport before you travel because August is less than 6 months from January .... It best to get a new passport from July or if you get the visa on your current passport no problem . Just make sure before you travel in August , you get a new passport then Fly with both passports .....Or if you just want one passport then go get a new passport after the passport comes then you go get visa .... Any way you decide will work . You work out what timing works best for you .... If it comes up at the interview , state you are aware of the 6months rule and you had planned after the intervew to renew your passport before travelling . if you want to be extra safe make sure on your interview date you still have at least 6months |
