PoliticsRe: Senate Orders Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission To Suspend 40% Hike by dave07(m): 6:14pm On Feb 16, 2016
Very bad decision and if heeded may truncate the reform process in the industry. People should be more enlightened, you currently pay far more to use your phone than you spend on electricity bill. The cost pf production in both are quite wide apart. Let's be realistic, this senate decision is wrong!

Good step in the right direction, I only hope the tariiff is now cost reflective and the Discos can now get down to real work without haggling on poor tarriff again. I also think there should be more enlightenment on the part of the public and that Nerc ensures that Discos roll out prepaid meters asap and also carry out effective power distribution and not just revenue collection

I take exception to the word 'vigilant' in that release. If they had truely been vigilant the man would be nowhere near that tarmac. Secondly the uunnecessary warning issued thereafter is a poor attempt at damage control or are we to assume that up till that point the 'vigilant' security personal had been allowing all manner of person acess to unauthorised places in the airport

BusinessRe: Breaking News: Shoprite Ikeja Sealed !!! by dave07(m): 12:06am On Nov 28, 2015
http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/lagos-shuts-shoprite-over-breach-of-safety-law/
The Lagos State Safety Commission has shut the multi-billion multi-national shopping outlet, Shoprite located at the Ikeja Shopping Mall, Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly breaching safety law.

Officials of the commission were said to have stormed Shoprite on Friday afternoon and drove everyone out and sealed off the massive premises, placing a seal order at the entrance.

The seal order notice read: “Sealed, this premises has been sealed following the breach of safety law. This seal must not be broken. For further enquiries, contact the Commission.”

When P.M.NEWS visited the place Friday night, many customers who did not know that the place had been shut were stranded outside the premises.

Efforts to get the Director General of the commission to speak on the matter proved abortive as he was not available to attend to our correspondent.

However, a source in the commission told P.M.NEWS that the place was shut for failing to abide by the safety laws of the state.

The source said there had been complaints by members of the public about adulterated and expired products being sold in the outlet, adding that investigation was also carried out before the place was shut.

P.M.NEWS investigation revealed that some products that were supposed to expire in one month’s time were found on the shelves of Shoprite in Ikeja.

A customer, who craved anonymity, said she once bought expired milk at Shoprite, saying that the closure of the outlet was long overdue.

There have also been complaints by others about expired products at various Shoprite outlets.

Officials of Shoprite have been asked to report at the commission’s office on Monday while the outlet remains shut throughout the weekend.

A customer, who simply called herself Nike, said she was disappointed that the place was shut down as she wanted to purchase certain items for the weekend, while others also expressed disappointment that Shoprite could breach safety standard.

Efforts to speak to Shoprite officials proved abortive as none of them was available to speak to our correspondent.

Shoprite, which is listed on Namibia Stock Exchange and Zambian Stock Exchange is a South African-based retail and fast food company. It operates over 1,200 corporate and 270 franchise outlets in 16 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

The Shoprite Group of companies started from South Africa small town beginnings in 1979 with the purchase of a chain of 8 supermarkets in Cape Town for 1 million Rand.

The next 30 years were marked by various acquisitions and innovative expansion strategies that brought it to the R72 billion business that Shoprite is today.

God be praised that she was able to come to terms with the Lord before her death, few have this kind of opportunity. It's a great joy to every believer to hear that this happened just before she died. The things of the Spirit will always look like foolishness to those who are perishing.
A word of advice- Better settle with God now than allow a wicked person cut your life short while you are in sin, because if after killing you, the wicked repents and reconciles with Jesus, the fellow goes to heaven while you rot in hell. Think about this

Great challenge, good initiatives. Less talk and more action like this is needed
Every other thing about the DC freezer can be locally sourced except the DC compressor. Some Chinese company bringing in the freezer deliberately removed any name plate info that can link you with the DC compressor manufacturer.
Secondly can we begin to challenge engineering technicians to start getting interested in locally built inverters and also improve on the designs. More than 80% of people involved in renewable technologies such as solar power alternatives and the likes are non-Engineering graduates.
ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by dave07(m): 10:02pm On Jan 11, 2015
It's been quite a while but the thread keeps getting better
My final question. I have a load of 1.5 kW that I would want to power for 10 to 11 hrs. I have a 3.5kVa inverter (48V) and 4 12V 200AH deep cycle batteries connected in series. How long would it last?
PS Talking through how the answer is arrived at would be very helpful. I might want to play around.
With a load of 1.5kW your draw at the dc side is 31.25A, if you continue with this load for one hour, you'd have drawn 31.25Ah out of your 200Ah bank. Neglecting losses due to battery discharges and cabling and assuming you want to maintain a DoD of 50%, in order to lengthen your battery life, then you can only run this load successfully for 3hrs or 5hrs (worse case scenario & jettisoning DoD) before your inverter shuts down.
To achieve your goals you would need at least another parallel string of 200Ah 48V to bring your storage Ah to 400Ah minimum.
Alternatively you may work on your load, take lighting and some other load to dc with very low consumption, so that your overall consumption is considerably reduced.
Remember power at the dc side of your inverter=power at the ac side (theoretically speaking and assuming minimal losses) consequently current draw is a ratio of rated power to voltage. hope this helps

EducationRe: Nigerian University That Deserves To Be Among World's Top 100 Universities? by dave07(m): 7:48am On Sep 19, 2013
donroxy: During my NYSC, I served alongside some dudes that graduated from UK and US Universities respectively ......

I asked them questions on the system of Education in their School and I was made to realise these ;

1 . Four Academic Sessions (Years) will earn you B.sc and M.sc respectively while Only Two Academic Session (years) will Earn you Just B.sc,alone !!!

In Nigeria,Four Academic Sessions is just B.sc, If ASUU yearly strike is held constant, else, Four years would be 6 years ........

Why is Two Years for B.sc In most advanced Nation Translate to Four years in Nigeria ? (Failure Number 1)

2. We discussed Course Modules,Orientation and Means of delivering Knowledge and I was made to Realise most of their(UK/US) courses are Research Based ............. E.g If U are Offering Accounting 101 which is principle of accounting ........ One must have a company, enterprise or supermarket where the practicablility of ACC 101 will be acquired and same goes for most courses Theory and Practicability goes hand in hand as well as Presentation of Findings
100% correct!
And like someone rightly said, if you have the opportunity of attending even the lowly ranked in the Uk or US, you will not even ask this kind of question again.
You want the real university education, pls go abroad. You want paper qualifications and theories that are outdated and not revelant to modern day society, go to a nigerian university (especially the public one, cant say much about the private yet).
Tasted Uk education once, I vowed never to have anymore dealings with Nigerian university system.
We have not even started the journey to have any amongst the best in Africa, it will take serious divine intervention & human determination to even get to the bottom of the list you are looking at.

i.e You will see it firsthand how ACC 101 is being applied in companies,Businesss et all .......

When U are done with Field Research, U will present your findings using PowerPoint and Projector ...... Research Project begins from the scratch !!!

In Nigeria, don't even talk about our copy and paste Projects .....Only Few Ph.D Research are real as for B.sc/M.sc na grin .......

Examination in Nigeria has always been La Cram La Pour and heavily Theoretical based without/with little Practical Experience!!! ......

Most Nigerian Graduate do not excel in INTERVIEW because the school never prepare them for one .......

In Nigeria, School only served as Orientation camp as most of the knowledge U acquired in School have little Relevance on the Job why .... Trends in Business Change Everyday while Lecture Note of Nigerian Lecturers only change every 5-10 years

During my Early years in the University,I tried forming Efiwe by Writing outside my Lecturer's note ........ Which I will never do again most especially in Nigeria ......I never knew U must give back what U were given !!!
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

A Nigerian Graduate who wants to compete with Graduates of First 100 Universities in the world Must be ready to develop himself outside the School by Incorporating recent trends in your discipline and understand the rudiments

The Lecturers doesn't even care about students psychology .........What is Carry-over,what is spill, what is splash ....... Any student that failed a course should come back and resit during the Holiday instead of loading such with unnecessary volumes in normal session ....... A poor student failed a course instead of helping him/her out for society sake by resit while others are ahome, he/she will be loaded with more avenue to fail !!!

Nigerian Universities are still quite far from ist 1000 in the world and not 100

UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN,PROBITAS DOCTRINA,BETTER BY FAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN ADVANCING IN THE VALUE CHAIN watch-out !!! grin

ComputersRe: Inverter Users : Lets Have Your Experience by dave07(m): 8:19pm On May 29, 2013
Hi, Yes the DC bulb takes supply directly from the battery but
preferably through the load side of the charge controller ( if you are
on solar). The controller takes care of regulation and in some others
the timming (OFF/ON) of the bulb.
Yes it is necessary to run a separate wiring for this because the
voltage level is 12V dc.
The 4W bulbs I have been using for over a year and also stocking cost
N2,000, but I have since ran out of stock.
Recently, I came across another 3W and 5W with normal screw type lamp
holder going for 800 & 1,100 naira respectively. The other type I have
has an MR-16 base lamp holder and not the screw or pin type. Iam still
trying to determine the durability of these new product, cos I can
vouch for the 50,000hrs bulb life guarantee on the MR 16 type and its
quoted high lumen output.
Hope this helps
kayoday: Can you please share with general house.

Thanks

pdozie: Hi Dave, good insight. Please can you explain how the DC bulbs work. I mean for example,, the Inverter (or power grid) supply AC current. Do I need run another parallel wiring per bulb for the DC bulbs - since the load wouldn't pass through the inverter?. I assume it will be powered directly from the batteries? If so, doesn't it mean that there wont be any regulation for over draining the batteries? And what are the costs (say for the 4W DC bulb?)

just do as Pdozie noted and pls take note the battery is 200AH not mA. Pure sine wave means you get an output similar in quality to what you get from PHCN and can run virtually all your electrical/electronics gadget. yes it is more expensive than the modified sine wave inverter. many modified sine waves are similarly running quite a great deal of appliances these days due to new technologies being deployed in the manufacturing processes

160W 12V you mean? I got mine from Vitus more than 2 yrs ago for 35K/module (even before I saw Vitus contact on this page, only to discover it's the same guy I have been dealing with at Alaba.
I import the dc bulb directly from the supplier and it's almost 2K/one but is guaranteed for 50,000 hrs, hence it pays for itself overtime. I have been using these for over a year now and no issues so far

Nice Thread indeed, informative and accurate too, wondered why this is not conspicuous enough on the landing pages cos this, the career thread and travel section seems to be where I have seen matured and balanced moderating and comments.
my little piece is that if we are going to get inverters rapidly deployed, there is a very urgent need not to be carried away by the popular brands and their Pricing, the xantrex, sma, sukam in our own case.
for instance, I have been using a 1000W inverter (without charger) for more than 3 years to power my basic household appliances, TV set, Dstv/strong decoder, fans and of course lighting.
There are smart chargers that will run well even on a small generator to charge batteries. I use one of this presently with two (2no) 160W 12v solar modules on the roof of my rented apartment (definitely would be going fully on solar on my own proprty).
The point Iam trying to make is that with as little N35K one can still get a good inverter with Smart chargers capable of giving at Least 30A of charging current and these chargers can also run well on small generators (i better pass).

Another grey area for most of us in Nigeria is in load management, By the time the power sector is fully privatized all the waste prevalent in Electricity use today will be thoroughly paid for. it beats my imagination to still see a lot of energy wasting incandescent lighting where people could have opted for energy saving bulbs or BETTER STILL DC led bulbs which are even far better than the numerous so called AC energy savers abounding the Nigerian market sphere.
Last year I replaced 20no 0f a clients 18W ac energy saver with 20 no 4W dc bulbs, thereby reducing the power consumed by lighting from 360W to 80W, the 280W saved was then channeled to other household item. Moreover the load of the lighting didn't have to go through the inverter hence reducing the inversion loss in the system.

Total abuse of power. The manager should file a case on the governor once the so called stupid
immunity he has is over. I expect civil societies in the country to condemn this stupid act. It

Even if your submission below is correct, are there no due process for dealing with issues like these, the governor's actions smacks of total irresponsibity and gross abuse of power. PoliticsRe: PHCN & Blackout ,When It Rains: Why? by dave07(m): 12:46pm On Oct 23, 2012
Phcn does not seize or interrupt power when rain falls. Overhead power transmission and distribution lines in Nigeria, which are dominant, are highly susceptible to faults which arises from heavy wind blowing and destroying overhead line conductor spacers, tree branches being flung on the lines, wire cut or electric pole damage, thunderstorms, etc. The presence of faults activate the protective relays on these lines and power is interrupted automically.
In other climes, the protective scheme are allowed to also re-energizes such lines back automatically after a given time interval, but that is more likely to spell disaster in a country like ours, where most of the power line pass through heavily populated areas and places where rights of power line ways have been contravened, so these auto reclose scheme are not made active here. Hence, once the power line trips (automatically) during rainfall, phcn officials wait till the rain subside, they then restore the line or send out a crew to check if the line can be restored without causing harm as a result of Electric wires resting in places where it ought not to.
