Very bad decision and if heeded may truncate the reform process in the industry. People should be more enlightened, you currently pay far more to use your phone than you spend on electricity bill. The cost pf production in both are quite wide apart. Let's be realistic, this senate decision is wrong! |
Thank God for Nigeria getting a good name again. How wonderful it would have been if this honour came to a Nigerian University but alas Prof Opata is known today cos the environment and university in South Africa gave him the opportunity to excel |
Good step in the right direction, I only hope the tariiff is now cost reflective and the Discos can now get down to real work without haggling on poor tarriff again. I also think there should be more enlightenment on the part of the public and that Nerc ensures that Discos roll out prepaid meters asap and also carry out effective power distribution and not just revenue collection |
I take exception to the word 'vigilant' in that release. If they had truely been vigilant the man would be nowhere near that tarmac. Secondly the uunnecessary warning issued thereafter is a poor attempt at damage control or are we to assume that up till that point the 'vigilant' security personal had been allowing all manner of person acess to unauthorised places in the airport |
How did someone like this get clearance to move onto the tarmac in the first place? |
http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/lagos-shuts-shoprite-over-breach-of-safety-law/ The Lagos State Safety Commission has shut the multi-billion multi-national shopping outlet, Shoprite located at the Ikeja Shopping Mall, Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly breaching safety law. |
God be praised that she was able to come to terms with the Lord before her death, few have this kind of opportunity. It's a great joy to every believer to hear that this happened just before she died. The things of the Spirit will always look like foolishness to those who are perishing. A word of advice- Better settle with God now than allow a wicked person cut your life short while you are in sin, because if after killing you, the wicked repents and reconciles with Jesus, the fellow goes to heaven while you rot in hell. Think about this |
If Maiduguri isn't safe for orientation why should it be safe for primary assignment? |
100% in support. I was shocked seeing many friends on fb changing dp on account of the attack in france (no disrespect meant, and I really commiserate with those affeected over there) but the most populous black nation has suffered greater tragedies with higher fatalities recorded yet no mass action on social media, fb inclusive. Isn't the market base Nigefia offers sufficient to warrant a mention during our crisis |
God bless you. May he make you a channel of deliverance to many in this end time |
Great challenge, good initiatives. Less talk and more action like this is needed Every other thing about the DC freezer can be locally sourced except the DC compressor. Some Chinese company bringing in the freezer deliberately removed any name plate info that can link you with the DC compressor manufacturer. Secondly can we begin to challenge engineering technicians to start getting interested in locally built inverters and also improve on the designs. More than 80% of people involved in renewable technologies such as solar power alternatives and the likes are non-Engineering graduates. |
It's been quite a while but the thread keeps getting better My final question. I have a load of 1.5 kW that I would want to power for 10 to 11 hrs. I have a 3.5kVa inverter (48V) and 4 12V 200AH deep cycle batteries connected in series. How long would it last? With a load of 1.5kW your draw at the dc side is 31.25A, if you continue with this load for one hour, you'd have drawn 31.25Ah out of your 200Ah bank. Neglecting losses due to battery discharges and cabling and assuming you want to maintain a DoD of 50%, in order to lengthen your battery life, then you can only run this load successfully for 3hrs or 5hrs (worse case scenario & jettisoning DoD) before your inverter shuts down. To achieve your goals you would need at least another parallel string of 200Ah 48V to bring your storage Ah to 400Ah minimum. Alternatively you may work on your load, take lighting and some other load to dc with very low consumption, so that your overall consumption is considerably reduced. Remember power at the dc side of your inverter=power at the ac side (theoretically speaking and assuming minimal losses) consequently current draw is a ratio of rated power to voltage. hope this helps |
He said, “The APC has no plan to woo the youth whoconstitute more than 60% of the voting population. It is the belief of the leaders of both APC and PDP that the 2015 general election is going to be fixed by the traditional manipulators of elections. This is the basis of the ongoing mobilisation of the PDP chieftains including those who cannot win elections in their own wards. And what has the youth got to say, nothing except to fight along political, religious and tribal divides on Nairaland and be used as pawns in the power game, as far as I am concerned, we are yet to have a political party in Nigeria! |
Nice development. Just looking forward to it stopping the custom &immigration from dipping hands into personal lugaggage in the name of searching and subjecting helpless travellers to frequent bag opening and closing. Like someone also noted, this is needed ASAP at the Arrival hall |
JUO: try it with 1200w and get back to me.what was your experience with d 1200w mercury and generator? I would really like to know, thanks |

It is not every rant on NL that deserves a response. This by the Op, is one of such rubbish you find on NL, where faceless nonetity hide behind keyboards to write and disparage people they can never measure up to in this life and in the hereafter, (except they change their attitude of course). God bless Nigeria |
Hi, Yes the DC bulb takes supply directly from the battery but preferably through the load side of the charge controller ( if you are on solar). The controller takes care of regulation and in some others the timming (OFF/ON) of the bulb. Yes it is necessary to run a separate wiring for this because the voltage level is 12V dc. The 4W bulbs I have been using for over a year and also stocking cost N2,000, but I have since ran out of stock. Recently, I came across another 3W and 5W with normal screw type lamp holder going for 800 & 1,100 naira respectively. The other type I have has an MR-16 base lamp holder and not the screw or pin type. Iam still trying to determine the durability of these new product, cos I can vouch for the 50,000hrs bulb life guarantee on the MR 16 type and its quoted high lumen output. Hope this helps kayoday: Can you please share with general house. |
pdozie: Hi Dave, good insight. Please can you explain how the DC bulbs work. I mean for example,, the Inverter (or power grid) supply AC current. Do I need run another parallel wiring per bulb for the DC bulbs - since the load wouldn't pass through the inverter?. I assume it will be powered directly from the batteries? If so, doesn't it mean that there wont be any regulation for over draining the batteries? And what are the costs (say for the 4W DC bulb?)Hi, I just replied your mail on this. Thanks |
What are your parameters for this judgement bodeface: I made some enquiries and someone who is into the Inverter business informed me that Quantum Battery is a good battery. |
pdozie: I suggest you go through this thread on solar: https://www.nairaland.com/390522/solar-energy-complement-ftajust do as Pdozie noted and pls take note the battery is 200AH not mA. Pure sine wave means you get an output similar in quality to what you get from PHCN and can run virtually all your electrical/electronics gadget. yes it is more expensive than the modified sine wave inverter. many modified sine waves are similarly running quite a great deal of appliances these days due to new technologies being deployed in the manufacturing processes |
dsunmade: About how much do the 160V 12W solar panel and smart charger sell for? How much can one get the 4W DC led bulbs?160W 12V you mean? I got mine from Vitus more than 2 yrs ago for 35K/module (even before I saw Vitus contact on this page, only to discover it's the same guy I have been dealing with at Alaba. I import the dc bulb directly from the supplier and it's almost 2K/one but is guaranteed for 50,000 hrs, hence it pays for itself overtime. I have been using these for over a year now and no issues so far |
Nice Thread indeed, informative and accurate too, wondered why this is not conspicuous enough on the landing pages cos this, the career thread and travel section seems to be where I have seen matured and balanced moderating and comments. my little piece is that if we are going to get inverters rapidly deployed, there is a very urgent need not to be carried away by the popular brands and their Pricing, the xantrex, sma, sukam in our own case. for instance, I have been using a 1000W inverter (without charger) for more than 3 years to power my basic household appliances, TV set, Dstv/strong decoder, fans and of course lighting. There are smart chargers that will run well even on a small generator to charge batteries. I use one of this presently with two (2no) 160W 12v solar modules on the roof of my rented apartment (definitely would be going fully on solar on my own proprty). The point Iam trying to make is that with as little N35K one can still get a good inverter with Smart chargers capable of giving at Least 30A of charging current and these chargers can also run well on small generators (i better pass). Another grey area for most of us in Nigeria is in load management, By the time the power sector is fully privatized all the waste prevalent in Electricity use today will be thoroughly paid for. it beats my imagination to still see a lot of energy wasting incandescent lighting where people could have opted for energy saving bulbs or BETTER STILL DC led bulbs which are even far better than the numerous so called AC energy savers abounding the Nigerian market sphere. Last year I replaced 20no 0f a clients 18W ac energy saver with 20 no 4W dc bulbs, thereby reducing the power consumed by lighting from 360W to 80W, the 280W saved was then channeled to other household item. Moreover the load of the lighting didn't have to go through the inverter hence reducing the inversion loss in the system. |
Both write-ups from iyaniwura and Novushomo quote are great read. Going through these enlightened and challenged me the more. Good work and pls encourage more of these on NL |
I dont think Gyan should be in too, Bance did better. Just couldnt help to see the bias in Ghanian circle after we beat CIV and Mali and Ghana lost out to Bf, thank God we won, got awards and also topped the CAF list. It is a good day for Nigeria! Ghanaians and ghanaweb have to change Re: Nigeria wins African title for 1st time since Ghana do not have a teamhttp://mobile.ghanaweb.com/wap/article.php?ID=264632&mode=comments |

Hearme: Since no one has come out to disclaim this action by the Governor it means it really happened.Thank you sir for this sensible post Even if your submission below is correct, are there no due process for dealing with issues like these, the governor's actions smacks of total irresponsibity and gross abuse of power. The money allegedly given to the Phcn manager came from his private pocket or is there no laid down procedures for the issuance of such. Yes, many may have grouse with phcn staff but the people there are also Nigerians and the corrption therein is a reflection of the society. No right thinking person would for any reason or in any guise applaud this governor for his actions. Like someone said, that man could have been anybody's father! atiku07: guy u seems to be de most unbiased of all here. I stay in sokoto and was at de same wamako local government last sunday it was total blackout in dat area I mean a whole local govt. Headquarters dat apart. There was a transformer in dat area before all the incidence of power failure like datransformer got blown and nepa was contacted to repair de transformer of which dey did and three days later it got blown up again and now de governor tought it's wise to get a brand knew one cause he asked dis same nepa official wat was de cause of de blown repaired transformer and was told de contractor used fake materials in repairing de transformer and he said ok he should bring quotation for new one which was 17 millon naira o! And he was paid in full only for him to bring in de new transformer and it got blown up de third day again which means owo ti wo igbo lol and de guy was summoned again and he even have de effontrey to be telling de governor dat the transformer was a bad one men nepa guys funny die ! Na so governor provoke carry bulala wey hin keep besde am lol begin wipe nepa manager o! De thing no easy. Nepa has always been like dat trying 2 fleece ppl at every little chance, de guy tought he was chopping national cake haahahaha. Can u imagine a stepdown transformer got blown up and their kaduna office asked them to come and pick another one and all dey do was tell ppl in the zones using the transformer to contribute 10 million naira to transport it from kaduna. And that was why I support bart nnaji scrapping dem all. Mtcheewwwww |
Phcn does not seize or interrupt power when rain falls. Overhead power transmission and distribution lines in Nigeria, which are dominant, are highly susceptible to faults which arises from heavy wind blowing and destroying overhead line conductor spacers, tree branches being flung on the lines, wire cut or electric pole damage, thunderstorms, etc. The presence of faults activate the protective relays on these lines and power is interrupted automically. In other climes, the protective scheme are allowed to also re-energizes such lines back automatically after a given time interval, but that is more likely to spell disaster in a country like ours, where most of the power line pass through heavily populated areas and places where rights of power line ways have been contravened, so these auto reclose scheme are not made active here. Hence, once the power line trips (automatically) during rainfall, phcn officials wait till the rain subside, they then restore the line or send out a crew to check if the line can be restored without causing harm as a result of Electric wires resting in places where it ought not to. |
abiL: The tax in the UK isn't excruciating. With his £45,000 per year salary and even after tax, your friend will still be able to live a very comfortable life. Some people in England survive with a yearly income of around £30,000 (before tax), and they have a good quality of life.thanks for the response, it is appreciated, we' ve been seeking God's counsel on this realy, just wanted to know the challenges one might face with the relocation considering also the fact that his marriage is relatively fresh. In fact, he was in the uk earlier this year b4 the olympics (for a module of an M.Sc distant learning programme) and that is how he came in contact with the offer. Also considering the standard of living he witnessed coupled with uniqueness of the academic programme compared to what is obtainable in naija, the offer looks so tempting. That is why he is taking his time to seek for counsel before making the next move. uboma: u sound suspicious. U registered on September 13, 2012 and of all the threads on NL u choose to respond to this. Hmmmn! By the way, who asked u where u live?must you comment if you have nothing to contribute to the thread. l doubt if you even read my opening, cos you wouldnt be embarrasing yourself as you just did, beside stalking people who have no time for you.BTW it is better to be a first timer onNL and contibute to a thread sensibly than be a member for years with rubbish posts giving you high number of posts made. Pls, pls I need only serious and sincere comments, not trollers. No offense meant pls! |
olas2u: Nigeria is betterhow? With £45K/annum that translates to more than N750K per month. How much of this is likely to go on tax and living cost for one person? |
Hi, a friend is in serious need of advice especially from those residing in the UK. He is presently employed in Nigeria on a monthly salary of N160K aside housing which is about 400K/annum and other minor allowances. The offer in the Uk is around £45K/ annum aside car loan and one time offer of assistance towards settlement around warwick. The certificate of sponsorship will be issued by the company once my friend is ready to begin the visa application processes. We have heard that the tax in the Uk is heavy as well as high cost of living. What advise would you give to this person based on conditions stated. Pls this is real and honest counsel is being sought, forgive me for not going into too much details, but will you take this offer and relocate and why? God bless you and no insults pls |
