what do we have? lots of young and aspiring intellectuals, with enough potentials to take on the world. myriads of elect/elect craftmen, technicians, technologists and engineers who also possess the abilities of the asians to turn around any economy. plenty of resources, abundant solar, coal and gas which is presently being flared off in the niger delta. scrap metals which look so useless to us but indians and other asians have been converting to exportable steel and material under our nose, Iam sure we can do a lot! |
I thank my God that i am out of this Maybe God forsaken Country - massive corruption on a whole even its citizens are guilty. Please tell how a country can can change when the citizens are equally as corrupt as their leader. One vicous circle of going nowhere.I can guarantee you that God has not forsaken the land and thank God for those of us still there and by His grace we will surely sing at last. we are in a very trying period in the nation and surely we would come out of it. The same God who did not allow Abacha to finsh us all before taking him away and who also recently delivered a state from the control of the 'garrison commander' will definitely make a way for us. HOW DID WE GET HERE? Loss of a sense of value, break down of law and order culminating in high and un paid bills, vandalization, lack of visionary leaders, energy wastages, corruption, etc. i believe we have flogged and even overflogged this issues on nairaland, what we have all failed to do so far is to engage in result-oriented discussion that someone out there can build on and use as a workbench to achieve something for us. the leadership evolved from us, they are nigerians too. majority today would do worse if entrusted with power! but let the re-orientation start with the people, let's redefine values, let's come to understand that the glories of the developed nations today are precipitated on the sweat and suffering of past heros. |
Power supply has declined drastically across the country; with overall power generation capacity hovering around 900 mega watts for the whole country.source: The Punch Newspaper, Thursday July 3rd 2008. |
As long as we fail to make the States build power plants and do not encourage the citizenry to go into renewable energy generations for homes and office applications, we will only continue to complain and trade blames |

I never knew we had wizards in phcn who are expected to provide supply to a nation whose govt has all this time squandered d money meant for improving the power sector, all in the name of allocations to the power sector. Must we keep on bashing phcn and the staff there even after the owner of the parastatal has come out to openly declare that we shouldnt expect steady supply until 2011? are the staff of phcn allocated quarters in a different country where there is unending power supply or are they equaly not nigerians from the same nigerian society with all its deficiency and dyfunctional leadership? if power supply failure at MMA is causing problems, what happen to all the money spent on emergency back-ups at the airport. if MMA is Nigerian made, Nigerian Managed and Nigeria based, why are we then expecting a US type of events at MMA. Do we realize that some people ought to be commended for even managing the less than 3,000mw the country is having as generating capacity for a population of more than 150 million people. Nigeria, it is time to awake from slumber and accept that we all created this mess and stop trading blames. from the big man who refuses to pay his electricity bills to the 'khaki' people that phcn cannot disconnect, to the administration that spent or wasted 16bn on power to the short-sighted administration who failed to build any power station between 1985 to 2003 inspite of population increase and industralization even despite the great armies of special advisers and ministers, and even to the vandals and gas pipeline destroyers, to, every nigerian, we are all guilty! so lets stop trading blames and lets get down to solving this problems. |
I agree with you. but we are talking about getting just one or few panels without stress in the country. is it everone that can import from alibaba, the minimun qty required, import duties and the rest. you can still do your due diligence and check out the difference. Or is there anyone who can help us analyze with ample proof and facts the wisdom in buying from a nigerian reseller and alibaba. retail units of solar cell and its associated accessories |
sorry, the link is www.lightupnaija.com/update.html |
do you have information on where to buy solar panels. you can check out this link. www.lightupnaija.com/update |
I WAS INFORMED BY A FRIEND DURING THE WEEK THAT THE GPRS BROWSING FREE OR PAID (WHICH ADVERTS SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN UP THE WHOLE NAIJA CYBER SPACE) HAS NOW BEEN SUSPENDED. IS THIS TRUE? IS THERE ANYONE WHO HAS USED AND IS STILL USING THIS METHOD OF INTERNET CONNECTION RELIABLY. IAM NOT ASKING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO SELL SOFTWARE OR CONFIGUATION KIT OR WHATEVER. ALL IAM ASKING IS THE WORKABILITY AND RELIABILITY OF THE NOKIA GPRS INTERNET CONNECTION IN NIGERIA. THANKS |
don't be surprised if the man returns and becomes the minister of power |
what then is the way out for the average nigerian who needs electricity for daily living and making ends meet. how will the average nigerian be able to source for alternative power supply that is affordable, economical and lasting till we put in place a govt that is realy serious about solving the power problem. how, how dear compatriots, or do we all wait till 2008? |
TRULY THERE WAS A PLAN TO PRIVITIZE AND I QUITE AGREE WITH YOU THAT TURNING AROUND AT THIS TIME STILL REMAIN A PRESIDENTIAL BLUNDER, EVEN THOUGH THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOME 'WURUWURU' IN THE PRIVATIZATION PROCESS LIKE THE IN THE SALE OF EGBIN THERMAL STATION. WHAT GOVT OUGHT TO HAVE DONE IS TO REVIEW AND STILL GO AHEAD WITH THE PRIVITIZATION PROGRAM. BUT THAT NOTWITHSTANDING, I BELIEVE WE HAVE COME TO A POINT WHERE WE REALY NEED TO TAKE DECISIVE STEPS AND BE MORE TRANSPARENT WITH GOVT POLICY. PRIVITIZATION IS GOOD, BUT EVEN IN THE COMMUNICATION SECTOR THE SUCCESS RECORDED SO FAR WERE MADE BY NEW ENTRANTS NOT THE BUYERS OF GOVT ENTITIES LIKE NITEL |
But you know I really love the sincerity of the president. for him to have admitted to not really knowing the problem cum solution to warrant a state of emergency as earlier promised, I believe take a lot of guts. And i believe it is high time we come to accept the government in Nigeria has no blueprint for solving the power problem. This is really no PHCN problem, but a clear lack of proper power policy and discipline that has brought us this far. but I strongly believe there there must be a solution, if not solutions. we can not afford to wait till 2011 |
MR PRESIDENT HAS DONE WHAT NO OTHER LEADER IN NIGERIA HAS EVER DONE IN THE PAST, THAT IS, TELLING US THE TRUTH, PLAIN AND NAKED. ACCORDING TO NEWS REPORT (SINCE THERE WAS NO POWER SUPPLY TO WATCH IT LIVE) NIGERIANS WERE INFORMED THROUGH MAY 27TH PRESIDENTIAL MEDIA CHAT THAT THE SOLUTION TO ERRATIC POWER SUPPLY WILL EMERGE IN 2011 AND NOT 2008. SO I ASK, DO WE CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO TILL 2011? |
this is calling out to participants of the seminar in april at peace hotel annex ojodu berger, please let's network on this thread |
Good work mr kobojunkie, I made admit you have really done a lot of researches on this subject and it gladdens my heart that there are still Nigerians Out there who are really working on solving the power problem back home. I believe that with nanotechnolgy, it is going to become easier to begin the design and implementation of off grid alternative power scheme in the country. Because of the problems of insufficient grid power, we are yet to start talking about the quality of power supply in the country and at such to immediately contemplate a grid-tied systems would be disastrous. Please keep up the good work, I personally will implore you to inform us of ways in which individuals, small, medium or big corporate firms can be involved with this scheme, so that it won't take 50 years after the technology had been used and jettisoned before one politician will now begin to brand it as a solution to the power problem in an attempt to siphon taxpayers money. I QUITE AGREE WITH YOU THAT THE SOLAR RESOURCES IN THE COUNTRY FAR EXCEEDS THAT OF THE DEVELOPED NATION WHERE SOLAR ELECTRICITY IS BEING DEPLOYED. If Solar panel can be manufactured for third world countries to easily purchase, then more than half of the problem is solved. The other important component for a PV system is the inverter, which locally designed inverters can improvise for. The liberalization of the power sector will definitely make money for any wise investor with the right solution in that sector, my submission is that we have discussed the problems long enough, let;s begin to roll out our solutions. Electrical engineers, technicians, craftmens, investors, etc it is time to wake up! |
Thank God for all the earlier replies made. The truth is that everyman is the architect of his fortune! if you believe your HND certificate makes you damned, then you remain damned! As a man thinketh in his heart so is he! Yesterday Punch newspaper featured the world University's ranking and no single University in Nigeria could make the first 200. Does that mean every University graduate in the country has no world class stuff, definitely not. The fact that you have HND does not make you a 2nd citizen or condemned person. You decide and strive for what you want in life, even if you have a P.hd. I think you also need to visit http://hndreport..com and http://hndjobs..com to see that HND is not a limiting factor, it all depends on you because as a man thinketh in His Heart so is he! I am an HND holder in Electrical Engrg (Power &Machines) and today I am a Corporate Member Of The Nigerian Society Of Engineer (not Technician) and getting registered as an Engineer not Technician or Technologist. A brother and close friend of mine who after his HND Mechanical engineering Program, did a Project Management Course, attended a job interview designated 'only for B.Sc Holders', only to become a top contender for the post he applied for and eventually got the plum job offer, even ahead of those the interview was advertised for. You are the architect of your own destiny! Today, there are lots of Technical college graduates who are providing technological solutions to the peoples' problems and they are getting well paid for it. You must know what you want in life and be committed to reaching your goals. On a final note, don't tie your destiny to looking around for only where you will be tolerated. make up your mind to take your seat to higher level and do what you have to do to get there. The bottom is overcrowded, there is room at the top! See you There! |

That is the real issue, because of certain constraints we almost end up doing nothing at all, even when such constraints have long been resolved. many Nigerians still hold to the old notion that inverters, solar panels and the rest are still very costly to implement in Nigeria. While it is true imported inverters are a bit on the high side, I know we can still get locally made inverters at very low costs and where are we even importing from?. The article and pix by Mr kobojunkie has shown us the implementation of solar panels here in Arica and rural areas at that. Let our policy makers be made to understand recent developments that can help our society. let the private sector be fully involved and let us do away with high and unrealistic government contractors quotes. If we can deploy a lot of off-grid systems in our homes to provide needed power supply, I believe we will be on the way to finally solving these problems. The problem is not NEPA or PHCN! Let us sit down and look for alternatives while the government work more on improving generation and grid capability, so that more industries can also come up unemployment reducing. Who says we wont be talking about net metering and grid tied systems very soon! Let me also add this from powersystemsengr.blogspots.com to corroborate the quote made earlier. fallacies about the solar cells PV is too costly and will never compete with "the big boys" of power generation. Besides, you can never get the energy out that it takes to produce the system. The cost of producing PV modules, in constant dollars, has fallen from as much as $50 per peak watt in 1980 to as little as $3 per peak watt today. This causes PV electricity costs to drop 15¢-25¢ per kilowatt hour (kWh), which is competitive in many applications Solar electricity cannot serve any significant fraction of world electricity needs. PV technology can meet electricity demand on any scale. The solar energy resource in a 100-mile-square area of Nevada could supply the United States with all its electricity (about 800 gigawatts) using modestly efficient (10%) commercial PV modules. Imagine 800 gigawatt! that is 8,000MW! |
The real issue here is not to talk about the problem but to find lasting solutions. I agree renewable energy source of power supply maybe too expensive for the average Nigerian. I agree we can just make do with generators and keep the whole neighborhood sick with co pollution and noise. I AGREE coal fired plants would be better than gas plants and hydro-plants, I agree with these and many more points, but I ask what do we really want as citizens of this great nation. Let's stop trading blames. The number of NEPA men who are facing serious jobs hazards daily and yet remain grossly underpaid far outweighs the little number interacting with the public and some of whose conduct has given the whole Organization a bad name. The rate at which we waste even the insufficient electrical energy available in the country and we are not made to pay for such wastages even surprises the people in neighboring Cotonou. The ease at which we run generators daily at very high operating cost and our reluctance to promptly and adequately settle our electricity bills will definitely baffle anyone from the west. MTN, VMOBILE, GLO and other telecommunication success stories were made cos telecom can be achieved via radition, so you need no visible wire to connect people. but can you do that with electricity? In fact when the prepaid meters were introduced, the 1st questions Nigerian asked was 'how can we bypass this meter'. There are so many questions to ask, why is it that we have not been able to build or plan for power stations that will generate more than 1,000 MW to team up with Egbin thermal station which is presently the only station with the highest installed capacity of 1,320MW? or do we need a National conference, constitutional conference Sovereign or non sovereign to bail us out? Do we even know what to expect in electric power supply, our rights and responsibilities as regards the supply we get from PHCN or whatever. We all have a stake in the power sector because whether we like it or not it affect us all. Why can we not task our electrical engineers and fresh graduates to design and construct locally made renewable modules such as inverters and also brainstorm on how we can tap into the rich solar resources to provide community electricity projects adapting foreign technology to local needs. If today in Nigeria, foreigners are making use of our "scraps" as raw materials for product which they end up producing in Nigeria and export to other countries, I believe it is time to sit up and refuse to accept the status quo. Abeg Seun, you go 4give me for this, but I am making am appeal here to all who are electrically inclined in local fabrications to please get in touch with me. I believe we can all do something together with God on our side. I rest my case for now |
Yea I quite agree with you. But can't we begin to think of an inverter design that can easily be afforded and for a light load application. Has it never crossed our mind how Nigerians have come to understand energy management with the increase in popularity of the 650VA generator. If such generators have brought relief to the common man, can't we begin the deployment of similarly rated inverters at least to reduce the noise and also CO emission from the these generators |
