Tolulope Arotile Killed By Civilian, Hands Case To Police - NAF Says


The Nigerian Air Force has provided more details that led the death of Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile hit by a car driven by a former classmate who has now been identified as a civilian.

Arotile, who was Nigeria’s first and only female combat helicopter pilot, died on Tuesday due to head injuries sustained in an auto accident at NAF Base Kaduna.

Details of the circumstances leading to her death were provided on Sunday by Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, as part of the preliminary report from the investigation into her death.


The driver of the SUV that hit inside the Air Force Base in Kaduna has been identified as Nehemiah Adejoh, a secondary school classmate, who was with two other mates of the deceased.

The report said, “On 14 July 2020 at about 10.55am, Late Flying Officer Arotile received a phone call from her colleague, Flying Officer Perry Karimo, a fellow helicopter pilot from the 405 HCTG, who wanted to discuss arrangements for their return to Enugu, requesting that she comes to the Base so that they could work out the modalities.

“Subsequently, at about 10.58am, the Late Arotile placed a call through to Squadron Leader Diepiriye Batubo, the Group Operations Officer (GOO) of 405 HCTG, who was in Minna at the time, to clarify issues regarding her deployment. It must be highlighted that the call FROM Flying Officer Karimo as well as the one TO the Squadron Leader Batubo both took place before 11.00am, over 5 hours before the incident which led to her death.”


The preliminary report said Flying Officer Arotile was later conveyed from Sabo to the NAF Base Kaduna by her sister, Mrs. Adegboye, where the Deceased dropped her phone for charging at a house in the Instructor Pilots’ Quarters belonging to Squadron Leader Alfa Ekele.

Her elder sister later dropped her off at the Base Mammy Market at about 4.00pm, where she proceeded to photocopy and laminate some documents.

“It was while she was returning from the Mammy Market at about 4.30pm that 3 of her former schoolmates at the Air Force Secondary School (now Air Force Comprehensive School) Kaduna; Mr. Nehemiah Adejoh, Mr. Igbekele Folorunsho and Mr. Festus Gbayegun, drove past her in a Kia Sorento SUV, with Registration Number AZ 478 MKA. It is noteworthy that Messrs Adejoh, Folorunsho and Gbayegun are all civilians who live outside NAF Base Kaduna, but were on their way to visit one Mrs. Chioma Ugwu, wife of Squadron Leader Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who lives at Ekagbo Quarters on the Base,” Daramola said.

And upon recognising their schoolmate, “Arotile, after passing her, Mr. Adejoh, who was driving, reversed the vehicle, ostensibly in an attempt to quickly meet up with the Deceased, who was walking in the opposite direction,” the report said.

The went further to say that, “In the process, the vehicle struck Flying Officer Arotile from the rear, knocking her down with significant force and causing her to hit her head on the pavement. The vehicle then ran over parts of her body as it veered off the road beyond the kerb and onto the pavement, causing her further injuries.

“Flying Officer Arotile was subsequently rushed to the 461 NAF Hospital Kaduna for treatment, while Mr. Folorunsho (one of the occupants of the vehicle) who is also an Accident & Emergency Nurse at the St Gerard Catholic Hospital Kaduna, administered First Aid.”

The report said Flying Officer Arotile was confirmed dead by the On-Call Doctor at the 461 NAF Hospital at about 4.45pm on 14 July 2020, as a result of the head injuries.

The trio of Messrs Nehemiah Adejoh, Igbekele Folorunsho and Festus Gbayegun were immediately detained at the Air Provost Wing, 453 Base Services Group Kaduna as investigations began, according to the statement from Daramola

“They were subjected to Toxicology Tests at the 461 NAF Hospital but no traces of alcohol or psychotropic substances were found in their systems. It was however discovered that the driver of the vehicle, Mr. Nehemiah Adejo, did not have a valid driver’s license,” he said.

According the Air Commodore, the preliminary investigation concluded that;

The death of Flying Officer Arotile was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and significant bleeding resulting from being struck by the vehicle.

Daramola said that the case, being a civil one would be handed over to the Nigeria Police with a view to further investigating and charging the suspects to court in accordance with extant laws.

It also concluded that, “The Nigerian Air Force, being a highly professional and disciplined organization, will not join issues with any individuals or groups regarding the spurious allegations of ‘foul play’ espoused in some quarters.

“Suffice it to say that Flying Officer Arotile was a pride of the NAF in whom the Service had invested massively in terms of resources, time and energy. Consequently, it is ludicrous for anyone to even remotely insinuate malevolent intent on the part of the Service against one of its most prized assets.”

Furthermore, it said, it was extremely sad and disheartening that, rather than allow the Arotile Family and the Nigerian Air Force to grieve for our dearly departed Tolulope in peace, many have chosen to politicize her death, while others are using the incident to push meritless, misguided ethnic and religious agendas.

The NAF spokesman said it was important that Arotile’s memory was not tainted by the propagation of misplaced sentiments and wild shenanigans.

10 year old girl subjected to rape by five men including her aunt's husband in Kaduna

A 10-year-old girl subjected to rape by five men including her aunt’s husband, has been rescued by youths in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.



The victim who is now in the custody of Hajiya Rabi Salisu of Arida Foundation of Nigeria (AFN), found herself in a circle of rape after her mother reported her to her aunt’s husband for refusing to hawk.



Her aunt's husband reportedly took advantage of the situation and also introduced her to two of his relatives who combined to rape her.



Rabi said;



“The girl reported to her mother when she started seeing blood in her urine and the mother warned the sister’s husband to stay away from her.

“However, since the girl continued to hawk, in the process, she met a man selling fairly-used clothes in the market, who bought her a school sandal and also began abusing her.

“Subsequently, a bakery owner also joined the queue after buying cooked rice that she was hawking. At the end of the day, about five men were sexually exploiting her.”

Madagascar's cure called 'COVID Organics' cannot cure coronavirus - NIPRD says

The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) has stated results from evaluation and analysis of Madagascar’s cure called ‘COVID Organics’ have revealed it cannot effectively cure coronavirus as claimed.

The Institute said the drug, which contains majorly Artemisia annua, reduces frequency of cough with maximum dose, producing an effect equivalent to that produced by the centrally acting cough-suppressant, dihydrocodeine.

NIPRD however said it will further investigate the drug’s effect on tracheal mucus expectoration.

NIPRD said:


“Safety studies show that COVID ORGANICS (CVO) products do not alter the normal physiology of the animals.

“CVO caused a significant decrease in the platelet counts although the values are within the physiological range for Wistar rats.”

The Institute added:

“The increase in alkaline phosphatase observed in the CVO female group may indicate a cause of concern although the values are within the physiological ranges for Wistar rats and this was not observed in the organs.

“On the whole CVO can be considered safe based on the model used which did not cover other routes of administration, effects of long-term use, or organ histological evaluation of the test systems.

“CVO reduced cough frequency with the maximum dose tested producing an effect equivalent to that produced by the centrally acting cough-suppressant, dihydrocodeine.

“To further characterise this product based on its effect on the respiratory tract, it will be important to investigate its effect on tracheal mucus expectoration.

“While CVO dose-dependently reduced general febrile response, the effect was not sustained and was less than for indomethacin.”

Director-General of NIPRD, Dr. Obi Adigwe, said:

“Well, I cannot tell you what they have done. I can only tell you what we have done here.

Starting Thursday night, Mark account began unleashing a stream of more than a dozen tweets and retweets, including obscenities, shout-outs, threats and racial slurs. The tweets remained on the account, which has 4.2 million followers, for less than an hour before Twitter removed them.

“Intel is there’s a bomb at Twitter HQ,” read one of the tweets. “Shoutout to Ron and Kyle,” another said. Many of the tweets were tagged with #Letswork.

The company said in a tweet Thursday evening that the phone number associated with Mark account “was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider.” The hacker was then able to use the phone number to compose and send tweets via text message using the platform’s tweet-via-SMS feature.

Nigeria loses 6.8m tonnes of yams annually – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday regretted that Nigeria loses 40 per cent of the 17 million tonnes of yams it produces annually to storage and processing problems.
According to a statement, the Vice-President spoke during the virtual inauguration and handing over of the 200,000-capacity yam storage facility at the Zaki Biam International Yam Market in Benue State.
“Post-harvest losses have been the bane of agricultural production in Nigeria. Nigeria produces 17 million tonnes of yams annually, but loses up to 40 per cent on account of inadequate storage and processing facilities,” Osinbajo was quoted as saying.

He said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was excited about the inauguration of the facility because “a major concern for him has been that the COVID-19 crisis does not in any way disturb agriculture and the food supply chain.
“That we are able to commission this project in the midst of the pandemic is especially heart-warming for him.”
Apart from the two units of warehouses with a combined capacity to store 200,000 tubers of yam in the shared facility in Benue, the VP noted that “there is the re-construction of 660 units of stalls/sheds, construction of a Police/market administrative building, construction of eight units of public toilets, provision of solar-powered borehole with an overhead tank, construction of internal roads with drainage and installation of solar street lights.”

Osinbajo commended the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, “for his leadership and the solid support he has given to this project and to congratulate him on this commissioning of this game changing project.”

As mass protests for racial justice sweep across the United States and beyond, the United Nations’ health agency urges anyone demonstrating to do so safely.

– More than 404,000 deaths –
The pandemic has killed more than 404,245 people worldwide since it surfaced in China late last year, according to an AFP tally at 1900 GMT on Monday, based on official sources.
More than seven million cases have been registered in 196 countries and territories.
The United States is the worst-hit country with 110,771 deaths, followed by Britain with 40,597, Brazil with 36,455, Italy with 33,964 and France with 29,209 fatalities.

– Worst economic crisis for 150 years –
The coronavirus pandemic inflicted a “swift and massive shock” that has caused the broadest collapse of the global economy since 1870 despite unprecedented government support, the World Bank says.
It says in its latest Global Economic Prospects report that the world economy is expected to contract by 5.2 percent this year and the pandemic will drive 70-100 million people into extreme poverty.

– United States in recession –
The United States economy entered recession in February, ending 128 months of expansion amid a brutal downturn caused by the pandemic, the authority competent to make the determination says.
“The unprecedented magnitude of the decline in employment and production, and its broad reach across the entire economy, warrants the designation of this episode as a recession,” the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) says.

Meanwhile, New York City – the epicentre of America’s coronavirus outbreak – begins partially reopening its shattered economy following almost three months of lockdown.
– Moscow lockdown to end –
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announces the end on Tuesday of a strict lockdown that has been in place since the end of March in the Russian capital.
“Moscow is returning to the usual rhythm of life”, he says of the epicentre of the pandemic in Russia, with around half of the country’s 476,658 virus infections.

– Britain lowest daily toll since March –
Britain records its lowest daily death toll in more than two months, with 55 coronavirus deaths in the previous 24 hours, and Scotland now going two days without a fatality.
Figures on Mondays are usually lower due to a reporting lag from weekends.

Sydney bid to host Fury, Wilder rematch


Australian city Sydney has made an audacious bid to host a blockbuster heavyweight rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, with promoters eyeing Boxing Day for the trilogy superfight.
Promoter Dean Lonergan has tentatively booked Bankwest Stadium in the city’s west for the bout, The Australian reported Monday. Semi-autonomous Chinese city Macau is also in the running.

“I put a proposal to (Top Rank promoter) Bob Arum about six weeks ago by way of email to bring down here the world heavyweight title fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury,” Lonergan told the newspaper.
“The day I suggested was December 26 here so we would (broadcast) to the USA on Christmas night.”
Lonergan wasn’t immediately available to confirm the comments.
Following a controversial draw in December 2018, Britain’s Fury, unbeaten as a professional, overpowered American Wilder in Las Vegas in February, beating him in seven rounds.

Wilder has activated the rematch clause in his contract, with a time yet to be fixed after the original date of July 18 was scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Arum confirmed in a Sky Sports interview at the weekend that Sydney was in the mix, along with Macau. Both cities have got on top of COVID-19, and appear more likely to allow fans than the US or Britain.

Las Vegas could still host the fight if spectators are allowed back into venues.

“Our friends in Australia are talking about doing this fight, probably in Sydney. That’s a possibility,” said Arum, who previously promoted ring great Manny’s Pacquiao’s bout against Australian Jeff Horn in Brisbane.
“There are six big casino properties in Macau,” he added. “We’ve talked to them. They’re ready to put up money for the Fury fight against Wilder in November or December.”

Nigeria should fiercely fight rape epidemic

THE recent gruesome death of two female students within a space of days in the hands of murderous rapists has cast a cold light on how badly females are treated in Nigeria. It is an ugly trend depicting the mushrooming cases of sexual assault across the country.
In the first of the two reprehensible acts, Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the University of Benin, was callously clobbered to death after she had been sexually violated inside a church, where she had sought sanctuary to carry out her studies undisturbed. Not only was she beaten and gang-raped, her assailants smashed her head with a fire extinguisher before abandoning her to a painful death. Despite a spirited fight to stay alive, she eventually gave up the ghost on May 31.

Barely some days after Omozuwa’s horrific death, Barakat Bello, a National Diploma student of the Federal College of Animal and Production Technology, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, met a similar fate in the hands of rapists. The 17-year-old was attacked right inside her home by three men and her remains were picked up at the back of the house “with deep cuts all over her body,” according to her distraught father.
Outrage has continued to grow over these heinous crimes, but beyond public rage, the worrying question is: who is the next victim? Every girl or woman now lives in fear, as nobody knows who the next casualty would be. This is because the government has failed to check the rising cases of violence against women. Taking place at almost the same time as Bello was undergoing her ordeal was another incident in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, where a girl hawking sachet water was violently raped and hospitalised. She was reportedly attacked by hoodlums wielding broken bottles.

As the society tries to deal with one incident, another seems to pop up somewhere else, but the epidemic did not just start with the recent cases. Nigeria’s patriarchal society is partly to blame for the scourge. There is a welter of research linking the handling of rape by the criminal justice system with the gender inequality found in patriarchal communities. Sometime in October 2018, the people of Benue State were roiled by the death of Elizabeth Ogbaje, 13, after she was repeatedly raped by a man she was living with and his son. The girl, who had been serially abused since she was eight, later developed vesico-vaginal fistula, a medical complication that ultimately hastened her premature death.

All over the country, there are bizarre cases of rape of the most monstrous types. The scourge does not spare old women and babies! A particularly macabre incident was the case of a 27-year-old who performed the abominable act of forcibly having carnal knowledge of his own mother in Ado-Ekiti in 2013. There are also cases where fathers have forcibly violated their own daughters, even when they are still minors. Something, therefore, needs to be done to save the country from this epidemic of rape.

Generally, rape is defined as unlawful sexual act without the consent of one of the parties involved. The Metropolitan Police of the United Kingdom defines it as a person’s intentional penetration of “another’s vagina, anus or mouth with a penis, without the other person’s consent.” Although people rarely talk about it, there is also another dimension to rape, which involves male victims.
According to the World Population Review, a website dedicated to global population data and trend, rape is a global problem, with South Africa at the peak of the pack, witnessing 132.4 cases in every 100,000 persons. The WPR contends that, in the United States, for instance — as in many other countries, including Nigeria — 70 per cent of rape is committed by those the victims know.

Rape is grossly underreported, either for fear of reprisal, victim shaming, family getting to know about it or not being taken seriously by law enforcement. This has clearly emboldened others to the crime. “Only nine per cent of rapists in the US get prosecuted and only three per cent of rapists will spend a day in prison,” the WPR said. With 97 per cent evading punishment, therefore, it is difficult to see how the fear of the law could serve as a deterrent to the criminals.

Here in Nigeria, the story is not different. Rape, quite often, is treated with levity. Many victims prefer to suffer the indignity in silence because of the stigmatisation that comes with it and the societal indifference. The few that summon the courage to report rape are soon discouraged when the police that should act decisively in their favour decide to trivialise the issue. This is why it has become so widespread in the country, but action still needs to be taken to stem the tide of the crime. A VOA report last year, quoting a police spokesperson in Kaduna, said most cases of rape were never investigated because parents wanted to protect their children from stigma.

Not all rapes come with physical injury alone. Some leave the victims with life-long emotional and psychological scars. This is the most difficult aspect of coping with rape, as people who could be of help may not even know what the victim is going through. Some end up with sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Others find it difficult to enjoy marital life.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries has told its members that services will henceforth be transmitted live on the television as the church is yet to resume physical meetings.
The Chairman, MFM Media Committee, Pastor Oladele Bank-Olemoh, who disclosed this, said adequate notice would be given before the services resume.
According to him, the decision was taken because of the ongoing provision of adequate measures and installation of facilities to ensure successful reopening.

Parents, run mad as five kids disappear in Lagos community

Residents of Otto, Ebute-Metta area of Lagos State say children are falling prey to alleged abduction in the community with at least five kids already missing.
The children are identified as Dunmola Ogunjobi, four; Aisha Taiwo four; Daniel Samuel, three; Alimat Onikoyi, four and two-year-old Romanus.
The incident, which started June last year, has created panic among dwellers while parents of the victims languish in pain.
Recent among the cases was the sudden disappearance of Ogunjobi while she was playing with her friends last Tuesday in front of her parents’ residence on Akinlolu Street, Otto.

“Around 12pm that day (May 26, 2020), I was plating my mother’s hair outside while my daughter and her peers were also playing. I backed the playground but she called me regularly and I looked at her to confirm she was fine,” Ogunjobi’s mother, Aminat, recalled.
All was well until some minutes afterwards when she noticed her daughter’s voice was no longer audible.
A search was conducted with the hope that the little girl was somewhere within the vicinity. As the day wore on without any clue on her whereabouts, the neighbourhood was thrown into anxiety.
