Kudos LoveToRead: Now, what kind of question was that? I asked myself.
'The two of you are beautiful,' I answered.
'I know, but who's more beautiful?'
I laughed shortly under my breath. 'I won't answer that.'
'Oh, come on, Alex. Is it not a harmless question?'
'A brother should not answer that kind of question.'
'Are you too not taking the brother stuff too far?'
'No, I don't think so.'
She smiled and placed the side of her head on my right shoulder.
Oh Steph! I remembered madam's warning. I was determined that no matter what it would take, I would not allow passion to truncate my moving up the ladder of prosperity. No, I will not be blinded by passion again. I must remain in the good books of Madam B. I would not flout her directive.
'Can you please stop the car?'
I was surprised. 'What? For what?'
'Just stop the car, will you?'
I slowed down and pulled over by the side. Darkness was fast approaching.
'What is it?'
'Kiss me, Alex.'
'What?'
'Just a kiss. Just a kiss.'
I shook my head. 'Steph, listen, your mummy is right ...'
'Can't you say anything without referring to her?'
'But she's right. Please, let me be your brother.'
'You aint my brother, Alex.'
I sighed in exasperation. 'Listen, I ...' She hushed me with a short but deep kiss. I had to force my mouth away.
'Steph, please and please let's stop this game.'
She smirked. 'I'm not playing any game. I only asked for a kiss, and I've got it. Now, let's get going.'
I sighed again and moved the car forward. This is dangerous, I told myself. I must kill this passion before it killed me.
By eleven thirty, madam and I were driven to the airport for the mid-day flight. Once again, we travelled by first class. We arrived the federal capital by 1.00 p.m. We took one of the executive cabs to our destination. It was a fine, white duplex located at Wuse district. I later learnt that it was owned by the Da Rochas.
The area was not as urbanized as Asokoro, but it was highly urbanized too.
A uniformed security man opened the gate for us. Madam had secured the service of a housemaid who would serve us during the period we would stay. Madam paid the cab driver generously and asked him to be around the following morning by eight. It was a nice building with fine interior.
There were two sitting-rooms, one downstairs, and one upstairs. The bigger one was the one downstairs. There were seven bedrooms in all in the main building, minus the boys’ quarters. The maid took madam's bags to one of the bedrooms upstairs.
I was to take the room next to the dining-room, which meant I would be downstairs. This time, I would be staying a bit far from Madam B. I welcomed the new fixture.
The maid prepared lunch of ‘semovita’ and 'ogbonno' soup and we ate. As usual, madam said she preferred fish to red meat.
Thereafter, she went up to have a siesta. I remained in the sitting-room, watching movies on the television. A couple of hours later, madam came to join me. She was in casuals. She ordered the maid to serve us fruits juice and peanuts.
I sipped my juice and munched the crunchy nuts as I watched the television.
'Can you please pause that movie for now,' madam said. 'I'll like to talk to you.'
What she wanted to say must be very important for her to say that, I thought. I paused the movie and faced her.
'I need to explain some things to you,' she said. I nodded but kept quiet.
'First, I need to tell you more about myself. I'll start with when I was a baby. I grew up not knowing my parents. I grew up in an orphanage.'
I was greatly surprised. 'Really?'
'Yes. I got affection from the foster guardians, but that could not be like from real parents. But even at ten years old, I always believed I would live in amazing luxury. In education, I was able to get OND and HND in Business Administration from Yaba Tech. By then, I had met my husband, who was just an upcoming engineer. Within five years of marriage, we started having stupendous prosperity. I have no doubt I gave him good luck.
‘But before I married, I had always believed I would have two daughters. I'm not a psychic, but I was gifted in certain knowledge.'
I remained fascinated to her story. What she was saying was amazing.
'I once had a dream - that was many years ago. In it, I set a table before my daughters. They had all sorts of assorted food on the table, more than what they could finish. They were really enjoying themselves. Then, I saw a boy passing by holding just some biscuits. I asked the boy if he would like real food, and he said yes. I then invited him to join my daughters at the table, and he gladly did so. Within me, I was happy to assist that boy. In that dream, my mind kept saying treat him like your son. I then woke up. Alex, you're that boy.'
I opened my mouth in wonder. 'Me?'
She smiled kindly. 'Yes. Ever since the first day I set my eyes on you in the church, the dream came all over and my mind said this is the boy in that dream.'
I was too stunned to say anything.
'You can now understand why I treat you the way I’ve been treating you. You're like my son.'
I became so emotional I didn't know when tears dropped from my eyes.
'I thought I should let know this, so that you'll know where I stand.
I nodded. 'I'm glad ma, by your goodness and kindness.'
She nodded too. 'I will always wish you the best in everything.'
'Thank you, ma. I'm grateful, ma.'

Lovely update. LoveToRead: She stared at me briefly. 'I need a temporary accommodation. I want to move out of his house.'
I breathed in hard. 'Why don't you tell madam?'
Mandy shook her head. 'I don't want to bother her again. She has helped a lot in the past.'
I nodded. 'So how can I help you?'
'I don't know if I can temporarily stay with you.'
The alarm bell sounded in my head. No way, I didn't want additional trouble.
I shook my head slowly. 'I'm sorry, Mandy.
That will not be possible.' I studied her briefly. 'I have a fiancée. I can't do it.'
'Oh.' She gave a sad smile. 'I think I understand.'
I nodded. 'But I still believe you should let madam know.'
She shrugged and stood up.
Alright. Thanks for your time,' Mandy said.
'Okay, take it easy.' I watched her leave my office. I wished I could help her in another way.
I continued with my work. Few minutes later, Steph called again.
'Hello, dear.'
'Hi. Why didn't you tell me the truth?' Her voice sounded agitated.
'What truth?'
'That you're having an affair with mum.'
'I've told you the truth.'
'No, you did not!' Her voice went up.
I felt exasperated.
'But, Steph, that's the truth.'
'No, it's not. Just a while ago, mummy called me. She said I should leave you alone, 'cos she's your sugar mum.'
I stood up from my seat. 'What!? Are you sure your mummy said that? Listen, I think there's a mix-up somewhere. I think ...'
'I hate liars!' Steph screamed and cut the line.
I remained standing on the same spot, aghast.
Did I hear correctly? Did Steph just tell me that Madam B said she should steer clear of me because she - the madam - was my sugar-mummy?
Oh God! But that was not true, or could Steph be up to another trick?
If madam indeed claimed that, then she had something up her sleeve.
My mind went over the relationship I had with Madam B. I remembered the farthest I went was helping her to massage her back, on her request.
I remembered she also said she had used the sugar mum stuff to test my moral uprightness, and that I had done well.
Why then was she telling her daughter that she was my sugar mummy? I was disturbed about what could be the motive for all these.
Even as I tried to continue with my work, I kept thinking of the incident. I believed it was a mistake to have slept with Steph and I shouldn't have done so, but insinuating that I deceived her to do so would be very untrue.
By nature, I would never fancy the idea of sleeping with mother and daughter. God forbid!
About an hour later when Madam B arrived, I was told she wanted to see me. I stood up immediately and went to her office.
'Good morning, ma'am,'
'Good morning, Alex.' She looked a bit stern. Definitely, something was in the offing. 'Sit down.'
'Thank you, ma'am.' I sat down gingerly.
'Why did you take it upon yourself to flout my directive, Alex?'
I looked at her very briefly, and then looked down. 'I don't understand you, ma'am.'
'Of course, you do. Why did you sleep with Steph?'
I was surprised she would put it straight like that. Did Steph reveal that we did it? If she did not, how did madam know?
My mouth opened but no word came out.
'Don't even try to deny it because I know you did. Why, Alex? Why did you do what I told you not to do?'
At this time, I very much knew there was no need to deny it. I felt deflated. 'I ...I'm sorry, ma'am.'
'You're sorry? Did you say you're sorry? How could you say you're sorry? I thought you have moral principles.'
I got up from the chair and went on my knees. 'I'm sorry, ma'am,' I said. 'It will never happen again.'
There were seconds of silence. '

'You can get up,' she said.
'Thank you, ma'am.' I sat on the chair.
'Now, listen Alex, if this thing should repeat itself again, you're gone from working for me.'
I caught my breath and quickly looked at her. 'Yes, if you sleep with Steph again, it's bye-bye to working for me. Do you understand?'
'Yes, ma'am. It won't happen again ma.'
I would never forget that experience. It was a day of great embarrassment, all because I could not say no to passion.
But what I still didn't understand was why she told her daughter she was my sugar-mum. Of course, I dare not ask her.
A couple of hours later, I decided to call Steph. My phone rang on and on without response. She must still be mad at me that I deceived her.
How wrong she was on that!
Chapter Nine
It was three days later that Steph called my line. I had actually felt relieved that we had parted ways.
It would have been more of divine intervention, for I couldn't have found it easy by myself to cut her off. Although I didn't like the impression she had of me being a liar, I had decided to let the issue go.
So, now that she was calling, I felt I would use the opportunity to assert my innocence on that.
'We've got to talk,' she said tersely. 'Where can we meet?
I thought fast. 'There's an eatery close to Tipper garage bus stop.' I mentioned the name. 'Can we meet by five thirty, today?'
She thought briefly. 'Okay.'
The line went dead. No problem, we would talk when we met. I was at the eatery by quarter after five.
I ordered ice cream for myself and sat where I could see the entry/exit door. Not long after, she arrived the place. I waved at her and she came to my table.
'Hello, Steph,' I greeted.
'Hi.'
I motioned her to a seat. 'What can I get you, Steph?'
She shook her head. 'No, nothing. Thanks.'
She looked at me and I could sense some nervousness.
'I want to ask you some questions,' she began. 'I will appreciate very sincere answers.' I nodded. 'No problem, Steph. I'll answer you sincerely.'
She cleared her throat. 'First, did you and mum ever have sex?'
'What?' I didn't expect the question to be close to this.
'What kind of question is that?'
'Alex, answer it.'
I took a deep breath in. 'No. Nothing like that. That's the gospel truth.'
She looked away briefly. Did she believe me this time around?
'So, what kind of game are the two of you playing?'
'Game?' I shook my head. 'I'm not playing any game with her.'
She looked away briefly again. 'This morning, she called me and explained that the 'sugar mummy' she meant had nothing to do with intercourse; that she saw you like her own. Why? Why is mummy taking you like that?
'She said I should take you like a brother. I don't really understand her. Why is she so attached to you?'
It was my turn to look away briefly.

For Real... Lovely Update LoveToRead: I was reluctant to grant that.
‘Oh, come on, Alex,’ she prompted. ‘Mum knows about our friendship. What is there to be scared of again?’
'Okay,' I finally agreed. 'But I'll like you to go home early today, say by six-thirty. I don't want your mummy to think I'm playing games with you. She has warned me against that.'
She chuckled. 'What games are you talking about?
I chuckled too. 'You know what I mean, lady.'
'No, I don't.'
'Yes, you do.'
I drove her to my apartment. Maybe I shouldn't have because everything changed thereafter.
'Let me see how your bedroom looks like,' she said, following me there.
I didn't want to change to casuals in her presence, so I only removed my shoes and socks, and tucked out the shirt.
'It's a nice little bedroom,' she was saying. 'Thank you,' I said.
She stood in my front and stared into my eyes. I stared back. That became my undoing as I became spell-bound.
'So, what games are you scared of playing with me?' she asked.
'You really want to know?'
'Yes I do.'
'Alright, let me show you.'
My lips moved towards hers. There was eagerness as her lips welcomed the guest. After few seconds, I stopped abruptly.
'Is that all to the game?' she mumbled.
'No, it's more than that.'
'Show me the rest,' she goaded.
Like a man under a spell, my hands went to her boobs.
'Wait,' she said urgently.
I removed my hands, staring at her. I was breathing fast.
‘I brought something you can use.’ From one of her pockets, she brought a pack of condoms out.
‘So, you already thought of this,’ I said. It was meant to be an accusation, but my tone was far from it. My hands went to her bust again and there was no resistance.
I lost all my self-restraints. I forgot all cautions and warnings.
We played the game to the fullest.
Oh, flesh, frailty thy name is.
* * *
'I think you have to go home now, Steph,' I said, looking at the time.
It was already past eight.
'Okay,' she said. Slowly, she started to wear her clothes.
'I feel like staying with you forever,' she said.
I shook my head. 'Nothing lasts forever, my dear,' I replied.
'But certain things do,' she countered. 'Love is one of them. And diamond. Those two things last forever.'
I did not say anything to that. Maybe she was right.
'Don't you think so?' she prodded.
'Hmn, I think so,' I said sheepishly.
She was through with dressing.
We went to the sitting-room and she picked her bag. We moved to my car. As I drove her home, she held my right.
'I'll never forget this night,' she said.
I felt I was in a dreamland. 'Me too.'
She stroked the right hand, but I still managed to steer the wheel with it.
This was crazy, I thought, being so intimate with Steph. I had gone against what I averred I would not do. How weak a man could be! Or maybe I should say how weak I was.
I parked the car some meters from their house.
'Thanks, Alex, and goodnight.'
'Good night, Steph.'
She gave me a peck and got down from the car.
I drove back home. Now alone, I realized I had behaved so foolishly. How could I allow myself to fall for Steph?

The place was declared open in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I really felt like I was an important man that day. There was light refreshment and we took our leave.
On the way back to Lagos, Steph said she felt sleepy. She put her head on my left shoulder and closed her eyes. I allowed her to be.
It was few minutes to three o'clock when we got back to the office. I was told madam had left. I called her on the cellphone to give her the feedback of the commissioning. Steph remained in my office till I closed at five.

As far as am concerned, Steph has finally gotten you. Madam would be very mad at you. Kudos Bro. LoveToRead: She suddenly stopped to stare at me curiously. ‘Hey, didn’t you tell me that there’s nothing between you two?’
I sighed. Was it not better I told her the truth now? ‘I’m sorry. Believe me, I’m sorry. It’s just that I found it difficult to admit. Steph, there’s actually something going on between your mum and me.’
She stared at me hard. ‘What! Why didn’t you say so?’
I looked at her plaintively. ‘I’m sorry, but I never knew we could do what we did. I never thought I could fall for you.’
She stared hard at me again and suddenly shrugged. ‘So, what happens now?”
I sighed. “We have to pretend that this ever happened. I’m so sorry, Steph that I didn’t tell you on time. We just must not do this again and must pretend that we never did it in the first place. Please, Steph, try to understand.’
There was a brief silence. Again, she shrugged. ‘Alright, I will try to pretend that this happened.’
I felt relieved. ‘Thank you so much, Steph. Thanks.’
She stayed for some minutes more before she left my apartment.
The next morning, I devoted my time to work and tried to forget about Steph's misdemeanor. Madam B was not coming as early as before, probably because Steph was around. Now, she came after ten, except when she had meetings to attend early in the morning.
About some minutes after nine, I received a call from Steph.
'Morning, Alex.'
'Morning, Steph.' There was a pause. 'How was your night?' I asked.
'Great. How about yours?'
'Well, not so good, I'm afraid.'
'What happened?'
'I guess it just happened like that,' I said.
I could hear her giggle. 'Come on, Alex. Don’t tell me you’re still scared over what happened last night.'
I decided to sound bold. 'Oh, no. I guess I was not just in a good mood.'
'But then, you enjoyed the act, didn’t you?'
I became uneasy. ‘Let’s not talk about it.’
‘Okay, but be sincere, did you enjoy it or not?’
Must she force me to answer that? I decided to save time by admitting that indeed, I enjoyed ‘it.’
She laughed over the line. ‘I know you did. Anyway, don’t worry over a thing. Our secret will be kept as secret.’
I felt a bit relieved about that assurance. ‘Thanks for your understanding,’ I stated.
‘Just to hear your voice, Alex. Have a nice day.’
‘And you too. Thanks for calling.’
Few minutes later, Madam B came and I went to meet her. She gave me the task of writing out a list of ten NGOs (some of them ran orphanage homes) and their bank accounts from her business diary.
I was to transfer some funds to their bank accounts. The money ran into millions of naira. I must say that I was impressed by madam's generous heart. The woman was obviously naturally kind.
At the close of work, while I drove my car home, I thought over how best to handle Steph. I decided I would tell her more truth about how I came to work for her mother and the impression the woman first created in me.
I would also reinforce the fact that what happened between us was a mistake that must never be repeated. In fact, the best thing would be to cut off any further personal relationship between Steph and me. I was able to do that with Edith, so Steph’s case should not be different.
I got home about five-thirty, but was surprised to see Madam B's Lexus jeep parked in the compound. Had the madam come so early? I was surprised it was Steph that came out of it, smiling.
'Hello, Alex.'
'Hello, Steph. You're early.'
'Yeah.'
I could see that she was holding a polythene bag.
'Hope you've not waited for long.'
'Nope.'
I preceded her to my flat.
She seemed calm and cool, I was quick to note. This was in contrast to the other time.
'One minute, please.' I switched on the television and went to my room to change. By the time I emerged, I was in casuals.
'So, how are you Steph?'
'I'm cool.'
I sat opposite her, studying her.
‘There are certain things we must agree,’ I started. ‘Number one of them is the fact that we have to stop seeing each other.’
