No politician becomes a great politician until he has grassroots-based supporters in all local government areas in a state and no politician can boast of followers if his grassroots support is not strong.

As of today in Akwa Ibom, some politicians are statesmen and there are politicians. For one to be proud to say he is a politician, there must be a certain percentage of followership or fans base to boast of.

In light of the foregoing, this article will unveil top 5 governorship aspirants in Akwa Ibom State with a long-standing grassroots support base.

1. MR. AKAN OKON : Currently, Mr. Akan Okon is the commissioner for Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom state executive council. He is cool, humble, easy-going, and a hard-working public servant.

He has been in the arena of politics and has been in public service in the past couple of years. Due to his humane nature and his spirit to see others grow, Mr. Okon has been instrumental to many young people's success in the state and has empowered many. Akan Okon is one man with a reputable character many people in the state speak good of.

As a gentleman loved by many and had contested for governor before, Mr. Akan has massive supporters across the local government areas in the state and he is well-rooted politically.

2. SENATOR BASSEY ALBERT AKPAN: Senator OBA as he is fondly called does not need formal introduction anyway in Akwa Ibom for anyone to know him. He is the popular personality that even a day-old baby must have heard of. A two-term senator, leader of the federal lawmakers from Akwa Ibom, and a former commissioner.

There is no local government in the state that senator OBA does not have or boast of a well-structured support base. His name rings bell in the state that even a baby sings OBA. With his structure all over the state, and as someone who had contested for governor before, stepping into the ring yet again for the governorship race in 2023 will be an understatement and his supporters across the state are eagerly waiting for him to declare officially so that they can queue behind him.

3. RT. HON. ONOFIOK LUKE: Onofiok Luke is like John 3:16 in the Bible where every child, no matter how small he/she may be must have heard about. Simply put, Onofiok Luke is like Jesus Christ, the only begotten son that his father sent from heaven to die for mankind. This biblical context clearly defines the person of Onofiok. Who does not know Onofiok or has not heard about him before? Absolutely, none.

A two-term House of Assembly member, the former Speaker, Aide to the former governor, member of the house of representatives, and a deacon in the vineyard of God.

Mr. Luke is one character that is so dear to Akwa Ibom and her people. He needs no introduction to be known. He is widely known, accepted, and celebrated. 4. RT. HON. MICHAEL ENYONG: Not everyone knows that Hon. Eyong, popularly known as Babantan, the member representing Uyo federal constituency is very popular and rooted across the local government areas in the state. If not for anything, for his consistent and radical empowerment program in the state where people from other local government areas in the state also benefited from. It is a known fact that Mr. Enyong has made more millionaires than any federal lawmaker in the state. This singular act has redundantly endeared him to the people and placed him above others, thereby making him more popular in the state even as he is being nicknamed, Mr. Empowerment.

The former businessman and two-term lawmaker, not until the Nigerian Senate passed a bill for direct primaries, Hon. Enyong was so popular due to the way he coordinated statutory party delegates in the state and empowered them with the hope that the election was going to be an indirect primary where only delegates will vote. At a point, the MP colonized all the delegates across the local government areas in the state and placed them on monthly stipends though with some sort of commitment to ascertain their loyalty and support.

Due to his long hand of giving out cash, Mr. Enyong can boast of a strong fan base across the state that can stand by and support him massively for the governorship.

5. MR. AKAN UDOFIA: Though some people are not still certain whether he is going to contest under the platform of PDP as his ways and mode of politicking are not too clear to the people, Mr. Akan Udofia is one of the fierce aspirants who within the short time he has surfaced in Akwa Ibom politics, has amassed supporters for himself across the state.

Although many people are not still familiar with the name, Mr. Akan is one big contender with a fat bank account that one can say, will standstill to the end irrespective of what the outcome may be.

Business tycoon and a billionaire who has asserted a few days ago in a media chat with journalists that, if elected as a governor, he will make and develop people. What more can spur the people up to vote massively to an aspirant than a statement like this?

He is one aspirant whose team knows their job and from information gathered, they have been able to coordinate supporters and there is no local government you go that the name will not be a subject of discussion.
