The season vieira left, there was no sign Arsenal would start being trophyless. That season Man utd was trophyless and

Chelsea won, Arsenal 2nd and United distant third.

So how would Vieira have envisaged that Arsenal would start being trophyless

Who are Bayern’s potential opponents?

After finishing third in the Bundesliga, Bayern enter the qualifying contest in the final round, officially entitled the play-off round. The first qualifying round for non-champions (to be played on 26/27 July and 2/3 August) involves the following ten clubs:

The third-placed team from Russia: Rubin Kazan
The runners-up from Ukraine: Dynamo Kyiv
The runners-up from Romania: FC Timisoara or FC Vaslui
The runners-up from Portugal: Benfica
The runners-up from Holland: Twente Enschede
The runners-up from Turkey: Trabzonspor or Fenerbahce
The runners-up from Greece: Panathinaikos
The runners-up from Switzerland: FC Zurich or FC Basel
The runners-up from Belgium: KRC Genk
The runners-up from Denmark: Odense BK or FC Midtjylland or Bröndby IF

Five of these clubs go forward to the play-off round, when five further clubs enter the competition:

The fourth-placed team from England: Manchester City or Arsenal
The fourth-placed team from Spain: Villarreal
The fourth-placed team from Italy: Udinese or Lazio
The third-placed team from Germany: Bayern
The third-placed team from France: Olympique Lyon or Paris St. Germain or Stade Rennes or Sochaux

The draw for the round involving Bayern will be made in Nyon on 5 August. The five clubs with the best UEFA coefficient will be seeded. Bayern are guaranteed to be seeds, as FCB boast the best coefficient of all the clubs in the qualifying competition. As a result of the seeding rules, Bayern cannot be drawn against Arsenal, Olympique Lyon, Benfica, Villarreal, or Olympique Marseille. By the same token, FCB could yet face Manchester City, Lazio or Fenerbahce.

@ Sharon

Giggs and Scholes are British - they stay on for ages. Rio is English.

The fact is that the 'better' players like Vieira and co didn't have the patience to wait for title winning sides to be rebuilt - they desired success immediately and decided to leave.

Vieira wasn't sold for clocking 30 - he chose to go elsewhere to win trophies, so did Henry.

Utd could continue to invest in Rooney, Tevez and others, Arsenal couldn't invest in the same manner.
How many Arsenal players are not internationals ?

Vieira didnt leave due to trophies. Maybe something else. When Viera left, the so called re-building hasnt started

Check the Man utd team that eliminated Arsenal from the FA cup and see if the quality of squad/money spent argument would still hold

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-4-1-1): Van der Sar; Brown, Smalling, Vidic, Evra, Rafael  Gibson, O’Shea, Fabio Rooney; Hernandez.

ARSENAL (4-2-3-1): Almunia; Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Gibbs; Denilson Wilshere; Nasri, Diaby , Arshavin  Van Persie.

A midfield of fabio, Oshea, Rafel and Gibson

Pre Mourinho,

EPL wasnt the top league and only man utd could make a decent representation in CL.

Mourinho/Abramovich changed the game and took it beyond the mental capability of Arsene.

Arsene hasnt really forgotten how to win cos if you take him to manage Barry town in Wales or Steau bucharest he might win the league.

But in a top league even if you hand over Barcelona team to him, He would find a way of remaining trophyless

You can also argue that Maldini

MALDINI (messi) finds it easier in AC MILAN (barcelona) than THURAM (ronaldo) who moved to MONACO (man utd) at 18 and then moved on to(PARMA, JUVENTUS, BARCELONA ETC) real madrid at 24. MALDINI (messi) has been playing with the same team-mates since 13. the ethos of AC MILAN (barcelona) were engrained into his system since puberty - how can you then do a pound to pound comparison to THURAM (ronaldo) who must still learn to adapt into a new environment and new team-mates
Makes sense?

Arrant nonsense - I am not hypothesizing about Wenger's ability to win titles - he has won 3 EPL titles and countless FA cups and that is the most of any other manager in the EPL era after Ferguson. You don't win the EPL three times with essentially 3 different sides without being a quality manager. You don't win doubles or go through the season unbeaten as a dud manager.

It is as clear as night and day that the difference is in the funding available leading to a lower quality squad.

I repeat - Wenger has won titles - there is no doubt as far as I'm concerned that he has what it takes to win titles as a coach. The obviously missing ingredient is the quality of his squad.
Winning the league when only two teams were genuinely in contention is so different, After 2005 the equation changed, Fergie stepped it up and matched the competition WenGAYS mental ability failed him and he couldnt meet up.

A and B are in a class where 2 ppl only compete for top 2, 3 boys join from Corona and up the game A falls behind B steup it up

How much have we spent over 6 years compared to Chelski and Utd? Kindly do the math instead of saying the same silly thing over and over again. If Arsenal has spent half of Utd's spending I will no longer mention money as the problem.

I don't know who 'generally agreed' this - I clearly remember discussing with Eldee and disagreeing with this rose tinted 'generally agreed' assertion.

In goal, we had a shaky Almunia and Fabianski and an untested Chez - no one in his right mind would describe that as being strength in depth.

Ditto CBs - A second season top flight Koscielny, a Djourou that had barely played 20 games in two seasons along with Squillaci - no one would claim that CB area has more depth than Utd with 3 CBs who had won the league at least once together, coupled with fit ins like O'Shea and Smalling who Arsenal tried to sign but failed. Upfront - Rooney being the highest scorer of the previous season coupled with Berbatov far exceed any pairing Arsenal has.
How many times did this so called Man Utd defence play together? Or Rooney who had a crisis beginning of the season and even threatened to quit manure

What is wrong is continuing to try to win the title on a shoestring budget when some rivals are spending £150m a season, others are spending £75m in January.
Man utd just won the league, How much did they spend?

Messi came to barcelona Pre-pubescent.

He probably got to Barcelona the same age Scholes and Giggs got to man Utd. Messi has been with Barcelona for over 10yrs. Including when barcelona was nothing in European football, So why should he leave when they are the best in Europe.

Messi probably feels more Spanish than Fabregas,Arteta or Almunia self. For a boy who got to Spain at age 13.

I havent commented on who is better but to make assertions like he needs to go to another league when he is already in the best team is weak and moot.

Who in EPL can even match his Sale price? Or would he just buy out his own contract to play for Liverpool or Arsenal?

why shouldn't he? so how would we ever know he can cut it in the tougher premier league as we all know la liga has gone to the pits.
Barcelona is the best team of his generation so why should he change?

Why didnt Giggs and Scholes play in another EPL side to prove that he is one of the best EPL players of his time?

We would never know how good Giggs and Schole is until they play for Chelsea or Arsenal.

AjanleKoko:
*sigh* Honestly I hate having to do this embarassed

You mean the Champions League Semi final in 2008? Well, your man missed a penalty, remember? Messi didn't even play.
Messi played both legs.

Which of the recent el classico? Is it the 5-0 at the Camp Nou, or the 2-0 at the Bernabeu? In both of those games, Messi absolutely tore Madrid to shreds. There were three other games in which both players did not particularly break the bank, but only a blind man would say that Ronaldo played better than Messi in any of the games.

Ronaldo managed 2 goals one a penalty and zero assists in 5 games. Messi was able to score three goals and two assists, one of the goals a penalty and the other a Champions League legendary goal (he took the ball from the middle of the park and went past FIVE guys).

World Cup? Portugal checked out in the 2nd round, while Argentina still managed to get to the quarter finals. Oops undecided
Its not that straight forward since messi plays in barcelona amongst exceptional players.

Think about it, if Messi and CR7 were to swap clubs who would be more effective?

coogar:
why is messi such a mediocre player in the argentinian shirt? coincidence. no one is disputing messi is a superb player but ronaldo edges him for the fact that ronaldo has conquered two top leagues in europe while messi will retire in barcelona. cristiano has scored 39 league goals in 33 games. he will win the pichichi and the european golden shoe to boot. jokes aside, ronaldo is the truth.
Thats a moot point. Messi is playing in the best team in his generation why should he go to another league? To prve what?

Would someone quit Goldman Sach for Afribank just to prove a point that he can survive in another league

4) Philipp Lahm (Bayern Munich): A good player, for sure, but his continued addition to lists of Europe’s top full backs is way over the top. Anyone who is made a mockery of by Colin Kazim-Richards cannot be described as world class.
Carlo garganese is a reetard. His obvious hatred for German football is palpable.

Given the comedy called Italian National Team i would have expected this to be an Italian dominated

Phillip Lahm has made the team of tournament in almost all NT tournament he has played at

Of course I know Chicharito was bought before the WC
DK and I were talking about footie experience.
Between you and I, Fergie would have probably sold Chicharito for double the price he was bought after his performance at the biggest stage.
all said and done, if you have never played in the EPL before, it's still a risk bringing you in!
But you can't compare a player who has played at the biggest stage and done well with someone who has played just one season in the french league with a mid table team.
How the players were managed is different and its strictly on the manager.

The same chicharito, Smalling and Bebe could have gone to Arsenal and would be saying if only you had signed Kolscieny, Squill and Chamakh who were more experienced.

Squilacci and Chamakh had played top level football and even several CL games.

None of Man Utd buys even knew there is a competition called CL

yet Wenger led his experienced and better buys to a trophyless season while the Ferguson gambles are on the verge of a double
